Aronis and John, who were fishing down at Oceanside when the fire broke out at Ruby’s join Conway to discuss what they witnessed. The fire continues on the pier in Oceanside, as there are still open flames even though the restaurant is surrounded by water. / Conway recalls his history with Ruby’s and going there on a date with his wife. David Vassegh (Dodgers reporter) – We’re following two major stories: the fire in Oceanside and the protestors at UCLA are getting mixed up and Conway is predicting LAPD involvement in the near future. David Vassegh (LA Dodgers reporter) is joining us to talk baseball with Conway. The Conway Show sent breakfast over to our friends at The Woody Show to thank them for the incredible animated video they created of Tim. And the creator of that video, Seabas from The Woody Show, is joining The Conway Show tomorrow in studio.

It's k IF. I am sixforty and you're listening to the Conway Show
on demand on the iHeartRadio app.Just ran into what David bassay, he
does Dodger Talk. He's in Washington, d C. But he does Dodger
Talk. He's great. Man.All right. We have a guy named
Coronas, another guy he's easy topronounce, John, and they're with us.

(00:25):
They're in ocean side and they cansee the pier. Coronas and John,
how you guys? Hey man?Okay, who's Coronas? This is
me? Okay, Coronis? Allright, Coronas, let's talk to you
first. Are you in ocean side? Yeah? Yes, I live in
ocean side, you do, okay. How how far from the pier do

(00:47):
you live? Maybe about five minutes? Oh okay? So how old gentlemen?
Are you? Thirty five? Buddy? Johnny's thirty thirty five? Okay,
all young guys, I get that. And are you guys in the
military? Man, I'm sorry, are you in the military? No,

(01:08):
okay, I just I'm currently employed. I'm a truck driver out in the
motion side. Well, we're outof San Diego with Budweiser, the King
of Beers, right, that's right. Man. You know what I often
see, are you guys driving aBudweiser truck? Yeah? Yeah, I

(01:29):
often see it on work. Yeah, I drive it. Stell it depends.
I stell a big way. Okay, all right, I get it.
But whenever I see a truck likea Heineken truck or a Bud White
or a Budweiser truck, I alwaysthink to myself, I do the quick
math and think, have I wipedout an entire truck in my life?
And I think the answer is yes. When how many beers are in an

(01:53):
entire truck? Oh dude, youcan get up to man. You know
when it's heavy summertime, you know, up to maybe fifteen fifteen hundred,
two thousand cases, oh, twothousand cases, and in the case is
twenty four, yeah, twenty four, eighteen twelve. All right, so

(02:15):
we're talking about forty eight thousand beersabout it into like two thousand, fifteen
hundred. Buddy, I definitely wipedthat out. That's I mean, I'm
talking three or four trucks. Now. Hey, if you ever got an
ocean side too, and you knowthis area in Anita is Carl's bad,
That's that's once a week, youknow. Oh yeah, no, buddy,
there are so many great bars inthat area, and Sanita's you know,

(02:38):
San Diego, Carlsbad, Ocean Side, La Jolla, Del Mar.
Man, that's it. It's likethe greatest coast and the greatest bars in
the world are down there. Yeah. That's covering. Yeah, that's covering
North count South County, yeah,North count Oh yeah, that covers at
all. Hey, So, ifyou guys are driving a beer truck,

(02:58):
they don't like any in your past, right, Oh no, no,
clean. If you ever got pulledover on suspicion of drinking and driving,
would they take all two thousand casesand put them on top of the truck.
That'd be a long investigator because youknow, when you get pulled up

(03:20):
for duy, they take your beersout and they put them on the trum.
What are your card to embarrass you? Yeah, they're confiscating, sure,
yeah, that's right. They wantthey're taking it home. Those cops
are taking it home with them.Yeah, yeah, you know what they
might have notified, but that's right, man, You know what, you'll
be taking hints tonight. But youknow, as far as the beer there

(03:40):
you go. Hey, all right. So so you guys can see the
pier. What do you think happenedto the pier? Why is it on
fire? You know what? Itjust really happened so bad. Yeah,
you gotta got out there round threeat our base. I mean, the
last time we were out there acouple of weeks ago, we went all

(04:01):
the way to the end of thepier. So this time we said,
let's try something different. It hitlike mid mid range right there, because
there's a lot of catches right thereright now. But it was just really
a calm day. So we werein the middle. We started in the
middle right there, and just outof nowhere, there was like a little

(04:21):
light smoke coming You couldn't really seedown there that far, but it looked
maybe to be coming out of atrash can. Okay, so that was
our that was our gut. Soyou guys were fishing when this happened.
Yeah, we were. Actually wewere already fishing all down lines down you
know, and just sitting around andreally peaceful. You know, you catch

(04:43):
a weekday down there, it's likereally mellow, not a lot of people,
not crowded. It's easy to findlike an open spot to fish,
you know. And then just yeah, maybe thirty thirty five minutes to us
being there, like a light smokecame from the end, from the end
of the pier and really wasn't aconcern. You still see people like walking

(05:04):
back and forth. And then youhad a lifeguard drive up there, uh
looking at just go check it out, like, oh, maybe somebody did
they throw something in the trash can. But then we caught like some some
teenage guys coming like from down thatway, and as we stopped them and
asked them, and they told usthat it was coming from under the pier.

(05:25):
Oh boy, and asked them like, well, were you guys down
there like at the end they saidyeah, And that's when they were saying
it was coming from under the pier. And then man, you may have
go you go into like not eventwo minutes then it got black like they
smoke. So that's when it waslike everybody's attention at that time. Bro.

(05:46):
Like so the first two minutes whenit first started, people seen it,
but just kind of we're still ignoringit, like oh, what is
that? Like, hey are thepeople that I'm sure there's a lot of
people standing around watching the you know, they the helicopter is trying to put
it out. I know there's waterdropping helicopters, there's water boats, there's
you know, firemen out there tryingto put this fire out. Have you

(06:08):
heard anybody on the pier say,God, now that this Ruby's has gone,
where is the next nearest Rubies? You don't know what, you know,
people are still in shock down there. I'm pretty sure that's gonna be
a question to asked. That's gonnabe the next question, because right now,
it's just it was it was justit felt like a movie. Just

(06:30):
everybody was just really stuck on itand just jaw dropping moments, and you
know, there's just a lot ofquestions of what happened. What happened.
There's like a few stories going aroundjust did they start under the pier?
We've seen and they were questioning thelady that worked at the small restaurant right
there. I believe it's the Brainor Lane and restaurant right there. I've

(06:55):
never personally been to that restaurant, but it's like a small one and are
coming from there, uh being agrease fire? Yeah, Like when it
started out, it's that that littlerestaurant was on the right but the smoke
starting off came from like the least, So I don't know. A lot
of questions, A lot of questions. How long you been living in river

(07:15):
in ocean side, ocean side now? Almost three years? Wow? What
what's your favorite Ruby's memory? Oh? Man, you know what, this
will probably be the first one.I've never been. This definitely would be
the first one. Oh, don'tmind blowing. You should have your own

(07:41):
radio show, buddy, You reallyshould. You and your buddy, you
have your own podcast, you andyour buddy. No, no, you
definitely need one. You gotta doit. You gotta do a podcast.
You know, two idiots fishing, two idiots fishing just at the wrong place,
at the wrong Uh, we gottago. But tell John he's a

(08:03):
stud. I just want to say, I listen to you guys show every
morning, and you guys get methrough these long drives. It was good
to get online and tell you.I was telling I was telling is it
aronas or aaronis? How do youpronounce that guy's name? I was telling

(08:24):
him, buddy, you guys gotto do a podcast. We've never had
anybody on the show that called inand reported on a fire, and we
actually had a laugh or two. We're just happy everybody got off the piers.
That's right, like rush, that'sruby. Well, we'll we'll find
one. We'll definitely be on thehut for another one. You know what,

(08:46):
Crozier just came up with this.He researched it online. It's short
for rebella. Wow. All right, but you guys just such start a
podcast. We'll promote the hello outon the show. Shout out promotion side,
all right, that's right, allright, shout out for ocean side.

(09:07):
What life those guys got going? You know? I mean they drive
a beer truck. Come on,right, so they're on their own hours.
You know, when's the last timeyou heard? Hey, beer trucks
five minutes late? Right, beertruck shows up. When beer truck shows
up, don't set your car, that's right. And then you go out
and you get all that beer andit's cold and it's great. And then

(09:28):
went on their off day, theyfish in the pier near the pier and
make fun of rubies. How greatis the I gotta go fishing. We
gotta go fishing with those two guys. I love to man. All right,
let's get a phone number on thoseguys. They show their own podcast
though. Two guys who drive beertruck and then fish on their day off
together, that's a life. Comeon, that's a life. That is

(09:52):
a beautiful life. Yeah right, they can just come in here, do
the podcast here with them, withthem. What a life? I mean?
Seriously, you know how many guysare driving back to their wives and
or husbands and kids right now, going Christ A Mighty, Where did I
go wrong? You know? Icould have betten up driving a beer truck
in North San Diego and fishing onmy day off. Those guys got it

(10:15):
made. You know, this emptycareerism that everybody has going in La,
how's that going? I saw awoman walk out today. She looked like
she was dying. She had abriefcase with her. She's probably in sixty.
She looks like life beat the hellout of her. No, she
didn't work here, shifts down tothe lobby, but somebody didn't get to
her forty years ago. Hey,hey, don't get into empty careerism.

(10:41):
Drive a beer truck and fish onyour day off. You're listening to Tim
Conway Junior on demand from KFI AMsix forty. The pier is still on
fire in Oceanside. I just sawit on Channel nine and there's open flames
still. It's not even close toout. I can see open flames on

(11:03):
the pier there in ocean Side. And for people who are from out of
state or out of town, oceanif you live in La ocean Side is
on your way to San Diego. You pass through Orange County. Then there's
a big ass strip there with nothinggoing on. That's where the Marines hang
out and train. And then youget into ocean Side, your very first

(11:28):
city after the marine base camp. There is ocean Side and their pier.
They have a beautiful pier. Iheard it was abandoned and they have a
major fire going on. They havefireboats there, they have local firemen,
water dropping helicopters. It's surrounded onall sides by water. There's three thousand

(11:52):
there's six thousand miles of water totheir west, thousand miles of water,
and they can't put this thing out. To the north water, to the
south, you got it water, how about to the east water there's water

(12:18):
all around it. It's the onlyrestaurant on fire in ocean Side and it's
surrounded by water and they can't putit out. What's going on down there?
It's wild Man Side Pier. Yeah, you're looking at live pictures right
now from skyfok. Several agencies areresponding to smoke. Those huge plumes of

(12:39):
a smoke that are billowing from avacant restaurant which was once a Ruby's restaurant
located at the Ocean Side Pier.It was again a former Ruby's diner.
The second alarm fire reportedly started aroundthree o'clock this afternoon. People are being
asked to stay away from the area'sfire crews work to put it out so
we can show you. Also anotherthat the jukebox at Ruby's well I believe,

(13:05):
which was taken by a viewer. These were sent earlier today by Mark
Dixon. You can see that smoke, that plume of smoke coming from it
looks like the Ocean's on fire. It's a three hundred and sixty degrees surrounded
by water. The end of thepure ocean Side fire and CalFire are there,
with CalFire now being asked to beginwater drops on the area. Again,

(13:26):
no word yet on what caused thatfire, and we know that Ocean
Side actually spent five and a halfmillion dollars to upgrade aging pipes and electrical
systems on that pier. Fill.Yeah, you can see right now there's
fireboat actually trying to put out thisfire from below. At one point there
was actually a water dropping helicopter itwas from CalFire that went over that area
and tried to put it out veryquickly. So once again to recap.

(13:48):
This is believed to be the oldRuby's Diner was a vacant restaurant there are
They keep taking shots at rubies. They said rubies three times. Retail.
There's a retail shop actually right thereof the pier, right and another restaurant.
They're a very small kiosk restaurant.We don't know if that's affected because
the smoke marine even with water onthis is so thick over that whole portion

(14:09):
of the pier that we just can'ttell what's burning. But we did see
active flame there just a few minutesago, right before we went on,
so we know what the flames areare still burning. It's a second alarm
fire, which means there are justdozens and dozens of firefighters who are responding
to this and hopefully they can sortof keep that contained to that vacant restaurant
and not sweep the rest of thepier. No, bye, It's it's

(14:31):
horrible. You know, Ruby's avery family oriented restaurant. And I guess
what known for. I don't know. They're are burgers, burger shakes,
fries, this typical. I guessbeach fairs and and I guess Bellio is
a big fan of Ruby's breakfast.Is that right, Ruby's breakfast. Let's

(14:56):
go to Ruby's so fast. Let'sgo to Rubies. Shooty Dooby down to
Ruby's where the food is great.Shooby doo Bey down to Rubies with your
favorite da Shooby Dooby down to Rubiesnow, and don't be late. Shooby
Dooby down to Rubies. Hey,hey, kid in the swing where fun

(15:16):
is the thing at Ruby's classic foodsmiley faces, oh with the swing and
forties flair. So yeah, theyhad that fifties diner thing going on,
and I never understood it because everytime I went to Rubies, I always
thought, Wow, there's a nightthere's like a fifties diner. And I
was always corrected, like, oh, no, it's forties. Like what,
Like, I don't know the difference, you know, between the forties

(15:37):
and fifties. Bye. But youknow it was just it was everything you
would imagine was on that menu, you know, hamburgers, fries, coke,
malt, and and it was itwas Okay, shooby Dooby down to
ruby, Shooby Dooby down to Rubies. Let's go to Rubies. Let's go

(16:00):
to Rubies. Mm hmmm. Andnone of people were listening, Let's go
to Rubies. That might be thefirst time anyone's ever said that, Let's
go to Ruvies. All right.I think that's where you take people from
out of town if you don't wantthem to come back. Yeah, you
want to show them the ocean. You can knock off two birds with one

(16:22):
stone, you know. All righthere it is, yeah, California food
and an ocean view. But Iremember when I went to Ruby's. There
was a long wait. They said, it's about an hour wait. And
I was on a date. Iwas, you know, I was hitting
a few parked cars in my day. I know Angel hates that, but

(16:42):
I remember I was. I thinkit was my well, I was dating
my current wife, my only wife, my present wife, Jennifer, and
we went there on a date,to Ruby's. And I thought, man,
if she stays with me after this. She's a keeper. Good.
Yeah, because I called her oneday she lived in San Clemente, and

(17:04):
she picked up the phone and Igo, hey, Jennifer, let's go
to Ruby's. Let's go to Ruby's. And she goes, oh, we
went to Rubies. Is that?Ah? That's all I said. All
I have to say is, hey, jen Let's go to Ruby's. Gouta
Ruby. You're listening to Tim ConwayJunior on demand from KFI AM six forty.

(17:30):
The pere in Ocean Side is stillon fire and they're trying to put
that out. Plus there is apotential balls up on the UCLA campus where
the Israeli protesters and the Palestinian protestsprotesters are mixing it up, and so
I imagine it'll be just a matterof hours, if not less, that

(17:52):
LAPD is going to get involved onyet another campus here in southern California.
But first thing, a little lightyou know, something that that we can
all agree on that you know,we're born and raised. If you're born
and raised here in southern California, you probably happen to be a huge fan
of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Dodgersare a great home team, ladies and

(18:18):
gentlemen, my thigh. Let mesee if I can play it on my
Casio. I got my new Casiohere. Okay, take me out to
the ball game, Take me outto the Crown, Buy me some peanuts
and craw good jazz. Don't careif I ever get back for rot root

(18:44):
for the Dodgers, if they knowit's a shade for it's one, two,
three strikes. You're out at theold ball game on David Vassays with
us. David, how you, bubb I'm doing great, Tim, And
man, what an introduction. Ifeel like it was the seventh inning stretch

(19:06):
of your show, Buddy. Thisis the seventh inning stretch. Five for
five thirty five forty is really theseventh inning stretch. I do know if
you know this because you're in Washingtonright now. But we had Steve Garvey
on earlier. Yes, actually I'mjoining the Dodgers in Phoenix on this part
of the road trip. And youdid see the great Steve Garvey in the

(19:26):
hallways today and the first thing hesaid to me was he loves going on
Tim Conway show. That's so niceof him, buddy. Do you know
Steve Garby, Like, when hesees you, does he say hive assay?
No, he says, hello,my son. Oh that's great.
He doesn't know who you are.Gives me chills. Yeah right. It's
kind of like when Jim Hill keepscalling me buddy for the last twenty years.

(19:52):
That's so great, buddy, that'sso awesome. He doesn't know who
you are. The Dodgers are ona four game streak. I like that.
That's got to bring a smile toeverybody's face. Were you panicking last
week? At this time, thecity of la was panicking, Tim They
were three and six on a ninegame Homestand you know, people at this

(20:15):
point in time are so excited aboutthe Dodgers, and when they go to
a game and they you know, they pay their hard earned money to watch
the Dodgers play, they expect agreat performance, right, and the reality
is it's not going to happen everytime you go to the ballpark. But
nonetheless, there were a lot ofdisappointed fans. But it feels like that's

(20:37):
a distant memory now that they've wonfour in a row. You know,
I I never give you tips becauseI consider you a peer, if not
above me, and I don't liketo give people who I consider, you
know, real professionals tips, ButI got to tell you, when you're
pissed off during Dodger talk, Icannot shut it off when you call the

(20:59):
guy. When you called the guythe other day at Clown, I could
not stop listening, Buddy. Well, he was with Clown Tim and you
were listening, and you were thinkingthe same thing. That's right, that's
right, man, But channeling myinner Bryce Harper, who made that famous
when a reporter asked him a questionthat he thought was not on par and

(21:22):
he just said, that's a clownquestion, bro. Yeah. And by
the way, speaking of Bryce Harper, Steve Garvey knows Bryce Harper really well
because his son Ryan and Bryce Harperwere friends when they were growing up and
playing in Las Vegas. I thoughtRyan played for the Rockies, didn't he
He did, he did, ButLas Vegas was a hotbed for young baseball

(21:47):
players, including one of the bestin Bryce Harper. What a talented family
that Steve Garvey has. He's gota kid that played professional baseball, He's
got another daughter that does sports inone of the biggest markets in the I
mean, the kids are firing onAll eight and his daughter Olivia took Fred
Rogan's job at Channel four. That'sright, that's right, and she should

(22:08):
have done that ten years ago.She wally pinned Fred Rogan. I love
Fred Rogan. He's he's so greaton radio and I listen to his program
all the time. Let's talk aboutthe Dodgers. When are we going to
see show Heyo Tani pitch a gamenext year? Yeah? Next year.

(22:30):
It's hilarious, actually, Tim,because as you know, there is at
least fifty to sixty Japanese reporters thatfollow every move Otani makes. And for
Otani to come back to be ableto pitch or even throw a baseball from
the outfield, he's on this thrownin progression. It's very small steps to

(22:52):
getting back to pitching next year, and right now he's only playing catch from
about fifty to sixty feet. Hedoes that every other day. That's his
routine, that's his rehab program,to throw the baseball every other day.
And these Japanese reporters with their cameras, they have cameramen following Otami. They

(23:12):
videotape every second of that. Youknow, twenty to thirty tosses from fifty
feet as if it was him warmingup for Game seven of the World Series.
So that just showed to the microscopehe's under day in and day out.
That's great, buddy. Hey,on a much more interesting note,
tell me how old your kids arenow and how they're doing. They're eight

(23:37):
and twelve. Tomorrow is a bigjogathon at the school, So a big
day for the kids tomorrow. Ican't believe that, buddy. When I
first met you, you had nokids, you weren't even married. I
know those were the days, Yeah, good old days. Huh yeah,
I still got the spark though Ihadn't lost my fastball. Conway, but

(23:57):
he's always nicest you and please comeon every day if you if you can.
Happy birthday to Sharon Belli. Ohthank you. I'll pass it along,
okay, all right, see itBob, because David Vass say everybody

I was gonna say co host, but I guess producer, right.
He's part of the cast and ensemble. But I think his main is he
going to be in studio. He'sin studio, studio food. She's so
excited. And he also he alsodoes the cartnark. He's the cartnark.

(25:07):
If you don't put your card inyour in the corral there, he'll bust
your balls and make a fool outof you. I was explaining that to
my wife the other day about it'slike, you know the cartner and she's
like, what I said. Thething with the guy he's like you know
in social media where he's like goesto people in the parking lot who don't
put their cardio, that's him. That's the same guy. She was like,
what, Oh, she knows whohe is though she knows the cartner.

(25:27):
Yes, that's everybody. Yeah,yeah, that's wild. He's coming
on tomorrow. But here was thismorning on the Woody Show. We sent
them breakfast thanks to Rob Berlucci,Michelle Cube and Sharon Bellio. All three
of them had a hand in it, and we sent them breakfast for doing
great animation piece for us. Andhere it is this morning on the Woody
Show. Seamasters came in and said, our friends at KFI are gonna be

(25:48):
bringing some food in quick breakfast dropif someone wants to open the door real
quick. They they're just sending thankyou from others. Tim. Something tells
me this is going to be likethis is our daily mention of the Tim
Conway Show on the radio. Yeah, I'm I'm gonna be appearing with him
Friday. Oh yeah, ok,because that's the best. Did an animated
podcast for them, Yeah, whichI was driving home from the gym one

(26:11):
day. Did heard Tim do alittle break about something I paid some guys
some money to do. Why wasI expecting cicadas or something? I thought,
for sure, what is this? It's a little it's a dresser full
of breakfast burrito, awesome rules.Thank you. I'll be on a Tim
show I think tomorrow, barring anykind of a police chases. Sure,

(26:33):
okay, podcast because yeah, theywere talking about how you know, pizza
Hut has like the three drawers andwe're so fat that we're getting food delivered
in furniture. Now, it's awesome. Thank you, Tim. That's cool.
The Woody Show. They play musicon that show. Yeah, it's
not great. We should do that. Can we do that? Don't we?

(26:59):
We? Probably? They probably weplay more music and they talk more.
Maybe yeah, yeah maybe. Butyou know, Steph Fusch is the
guy that turned me onto that show. He says, you ever listen to
The Woody Show? And I'm like, I'm not up in the morning,
and they said, listen to thepodcast. And I was hooked. I
was hooked. I love how sogood Woody seems to be as cynical as

(27:19):
I feel. Yes, that's great, and also it's it's a great show
to podcast. If you don't listento it live, you can listen to
it on iHeart Media. But Ididn't realize until today that all those people
are in one room? Are theyreally? Now? Like four or five
of them are one room? Isthat right? Stuff? The majority of

(27:41):
them are in the room together. We couldn't possibly do that here because Ravey
came down and she and she lookedand she goes, where's everybody I'm like,
what do you mean, and shegoes, you're the only guy in
here. I said yeah, andshe goes, oh, I thought it
was like a big party with everybodyin the same room. I said,
no, no, no, theythey're on strict orders never to come in
here. Ever, that's different unlessthere's a you know, unless the fire

(28:03):
alarm goes off, and they don'thave like partitions or anything between them.
They're just all in the same thesame lam. Yeah, it's great I
mean for them, Yeah, untilsomebody's got bed oh yeahs yeah, then
where do you go? Yeah? Then there's then there's five people in suffering
in one room. All right,we're live. We'll keep an eye on
UCLA balls up potentially u c lA with the protest going on, and

(28:26):
then the fire and river side ofthe pier covering it all. Conway Show
