(00:00):
It's KFI Am sixty and you're listeningto the Conway Show on demand on the
iHeartRadio app. Just listen to thestation over the weekend. Got great programming
here on the weekend, listening toRich on Tech on Saturday morning and then
Nil Savedron and then Tuala after that. Big fan of KFI weekend programming here,
(00:27):
and I heard rich on Tech hehad the same problem that I did.
I was in Arizona with my wifeand her sisters and their kids.
There is probably about ten of usand we're gonna do that raft ride down
the river at Parker, Arizona, and I'm the only guy that takes photos.
(00:48):
Everybody else doesn't realize they have acamera on their phone. So I
take photos of everybody and I passthem around everybody, and everybody complains I'm
taking too many photos. Yet thefirst thing they want to do after the
vaka they call me and see themif I can send them the photos every
time? Every time. So I'mtaking photos in Arizona and my wife said,
(01:11):
hey, can you share them withus? And I said yeah.
I said you have Google Photos andshe said yeah, and then she'd had
I don't think she downloaded the app, so she and we didn't have enough
Wi Fi. We were in ahorrible area and we didn't have any cell
service in that area too, sowe couldn't do it that way. And
then I try to transfer them witha cable, you know, from one
(01:34):
phone to another. That didn't work. And then I said, well maybe
I can air drop them. Thatdidn't work. I couldn't send them with
text or email because we didn't haveany Wi Fi or cell service, and
I got very frustrated, you know, trying to share pictures. And the
same thing happened to Rich Rich onTech where he was trying to share photos.
(01:57):
And you would think, you know, by twenty twenty four simple,
everybody would have that down and youcould easily transfer photos. But I guess
when you don't have Wi Fi,you don't have cell service, it becomes
very difficult and people get frustrated, you know, You're like, oh,
why can't I see the photos? You know? And I remember when when
I was growing up, used totake your photos into a either a grocery
(02:21):
store or most often a drug storeand you'd drop them off. You'd fill
out that that envelope or that bag, and you drop your film in there
and they'd take them there in twoweeks later you get them back and you're
always excited to see them, seewhat turned out, what didn't. And
then when I was I don't know, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, whatever,
(02:42):
they came up with one hour photoguy came up with a machine and
put it in a mall and youcould see your photos immediately, literally an
hour after you took them. Youknow, you can see your photos and
get them back, and that wasa big deal. And now you see
them instantly. You take a youknow, you have a birthday party of
when sing's happy birthday, and bang, you have the photos of it.
(03:04):
You have the song, you canshare with all your family and it's great.
But I have a feeling that ourphones are filled with photos we've never
looked at twice, never looked attwice, and all of our memory and
all of our I guess, ourspace on a phone is consumed by these
(03:29):
videos and pictures that we can't deletebecause there are are family, but we
never look at never, and theypop up in a memory every once in
a while, and you get sadbecause that memory is gone, and that
makes you a little depressed, likeI hate when those things pop up.
You know, it's like, oh, twelve years ago today this happened,
(03:51):
and then you remember how happy youwere twelve years ago, you know,
when the kids were young and you'redoing stuff and you're more active. The
house was loud and filled with kidsyour own, and you enjoyed that.
And now you're, you know, home alone with your wife or your husband
or your significant other, and thedogs are gone, the kids are gone
(04:13):
to school, and it's sad ashell. I gotta I gotta turn that
off Somehow do you get those crozierwhere they send you a you know,
eight years ago today? Oh mygod, all the time. Oh my
god, I gotta shut that down. Yeah. And I was just looking
at my my photos in my phoneto see how many I had? Does
it tell you three thousand? Wait? How do you find out? Wait?
(04:34):
I gotta do this. How doyou find out how many photos you
have? I went into the tothe photos app, okay, and then
I clicked on albums on the bottom. There's easier ways albums okay, but
I mean it's said just to myalbums. Oh well, I see it,
okay, Yeah, Oh this isgreat, this is great. I
says Recentce, and I got thirtytwo. There, I have one thousand,
(04:55):
seven seven and seventy eight videos videos. I'm a big video guy.
And yeah, I got one hundredand thirty one videos. And then I
have how many selfies do you have? Ninety six? Uh? Oh,
I don't like this number. Thousand. Yeah sounds about right, Bello Bellio.
(05:20):
I knew you were going to saythat, And I have a perfect
comeback. You constantly asked me tosend you selfies to post online on social
media a thousand times. Maybe not. I'm maybe five hundred of those,
okay, all right, I'll takethe other five hundred. And then I
(05:41):
have screenshots, seventeen hundred screenshots.God, what am I doing screenshotting everything?
Well, screenshots are easy because youcan accidentally do that. Do that
with the two buttons on the sides. Oh I do that. Yeah,
I constantly get a black one.Or it looks like the inside of my
pants your bucket, Yeah it is, it's my pocket. I'm constantly taking
pictures of my of my pants, the inside of my pants. Yeah,
(06:08):
I got three hundred screens, Yeah, tell me that. Videos, live
photos, I got twelve hundred.I don't know what portraits are. I
don't even know what that is.Slow motion? Why do I have one
hundred and forty slow motion videos? It's not even a thing on mine.
I have three hundred and forty sevenduplicates. Man, oh man, should
do something about it. I gottaget rid of all these. I'm getting
(06:30):
rid of everything. Just delete everything. Yeah, I'm gonna start over.
Delete none of this guff can beimportant. No, delete all frivolous.
Yeah, if it's important, you'llcome back. We were fine before,
right, we were, We werebetter before. Yeah, you know,
crows, we're the last generation thatgrew up without social media. You know,
(06:54):
like our kids had it at leastin high school or in junior high.
But we're the last generation grew upwithout social media in high school or
in college. Yeah, I meanthe beginning what MySpace? Yeah right,
yeah, AOL and then MySpace kindof morphed into then. And you can
tell in this building who grew upbefore social media, because they can lay
(07:16):
nine hundred stories on you and tellthem beginning, middle, and end.
The guys who grew up with socialmedia are just showing you everything you know,
don't show me, tell me,tell me, yes, all right,
they're moving that church the wayfair ErsChurch, wayfair Ers wayfair Ers Church
(07:38):
now. And I used to drivea limousine. I used to drive couples
out there all the time. Iput a beautiful church out in Ranchos Pealifers,
and they're taking it down. Sothey're moving it out and hopefully they
rebuild it somewhere. I used totake literally, I've taken one hundred couples
to that church. Wow to getmarried easily, because every time we went,
I was doing a wedding driving limousine, and they said, we're going
(07:59):
to Rancho pals Vertis one hundred percentof time. We're going to that church
one hundred percent of time. Becausewhy would you leave Pasadena or burbank or
Tarzana or you know, Simi Valleyand go to Ranches for Palis Verdi's for
wedding if it wasn't there, youknow, if it wasn't there, they'd
be a church like they have inPasadena and Burbanker and see me Valley.
That is a geographic nightmare right thereright now. Oh. It was horrible,
Yeah, just horrible. What wetalked about last week that they that
(08:20):
they shut down the part of thatthat road that's around there. Yeah,
to any two wheeled vehicles, right, because the Portuguese bend. I don't
know if we'd say that anymore. You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand
from KFI AM six forty. Ilove consuming things. I like go to
Walmart, Target, Best Buy.I enjoy Low's home depot. I was
(08:45):
at Target. I was at Walmartlast night and a lady came up and
she said, her name is Wendy. She goes, ah, my name
is Wendy. I listened to yourshow all the time, and if you
ever left KFI, don't know whatI would do. And I said,
well, you would do exactly whatyou do with every other show that you
enjoyed. You'd move on, you'dbe okay. Wendy and her husband at
(09:07):
Walmart. We're back in the creamerarea. My wife likes coffee and she
puts creamer in it. We buya fresh creamer. I don't know.
I don't know, something like aMenthol Is that right? Probably not,
I don't think so mint. Idon't know. No, I don't know.
I don't know. She's been shehad the same creamer I think for
(09:28):
the last nine years and I don'treally use it, so I don't see
what what she puts in the card. No, I don't drink coffee,
so I don't I don't know whatshe does with that. And then we
got a postcard that's old fashion withme. It's just one damp thing after
another, and it's a guy,a cartoon cowboy, putting diapers up on
(09:52):
a clothesline. I enjoy your show, Thanks for all the fun. Ding
Dong from Ralph, Ralph old schoollike me, sending postcards and he only
paid two cents. He put atwo cent stamp on it and they delivered
it. I think postcards are morethan two cents nowadays. They were selling
two cent forever stamps going back then. I don't know what they're selling them
(10:16):
two cents. Yeah, it saysNational Park Centennial two cent stamps. There's
no date on it. Oh yeah, there is a date on it,
May twenty twenty three. Man,we are behind, and they post all
right, we'll eventually get the mail. Retail, I'm a big retail big
(10:39):
consumer, love going to stores lookingaround, but I can't believe all these
stores that are closing. This isnot a small matter. This is going
to change, right, full.Over thirty four hundred retail stores are closing
this year. That is a twentytwo percent increase compared to last year.
At this time, we were warnedwhen Amazon started, we were all warned,
if you stop going to the youstop going to the store, they're
(11:01):
going to close. Guess what they'reclosing. And Hollywood's iconic ARV's is closing
after fifty five years, the ownersaying part thanks to California's twenty dollars minimum
wage law, while others are citinginflation is the cause. Drug stores are
not going to be there anymore.Restaurants are not going to be there anymore.
Well, what are we going todo? Where are you going to
get drugs and food? Sorry, maybe we're going to get them, I
(11:26):
don't know, shampoo and hairspray andfood. This is consequential, not only
financially and from a real estate standpoint, but it's consequential and quality of life.
That's right. It's very consequential, but it's consequential and quality of righte
ever, and needs a slide intoa CVS availability of services now. The
(11:48):
town closures include Family Dollar A oversix hundred stores, followed by Route twenty
one ninety nine cents only stores,CBS seven eleven and more. Do you
hear what's closing? Closures include FamilyDollar A Family the Dollar stores closing?
Man, are we in trouble whenyou can't keep a dollar store open for
six hundred stores? Followed by Routetwenty one ninety nine cents only stores,
(12:09):
CBS seven eleven and more. Retaildemand is self? I mean was wait,
seven eleven is closing? I thoughtseven elevens are making billions of dollars
in more seven eleven closing? Retaildemand is self? I mean it was
flat this past month. Consumer sentiments. It's had a seven months low right
now. Inflation is having a bigimpact on consumers. Perchase, there are
(12:30):
a number of reasons driving these shutdowns. Poor strategy for one. Companies are
also carrying a lot of debt. They're dealing with theft. Okay, all
right, I don't believe this here, perch There are a number of reasons
driving these shutdowns. Okay, numberof reasons driving these shutdowns. Poor strategy
for one. Okay, poor strategyfor one. Are you telling me that
all nine of those companies have havepoor CEOs and CFOs and coos of course
(12:56):
they don't. There's got to besomething bigger there. I don't think it's
poor strategy. I think the strategyis to try to keep stores open and
try to keep people employed and tryto get make as much money as possible.
And they just can't do it.Everyone is broke. Poor strategy.
For one, companies are also carryinga lot of debt. They're dealing with
(13:16):
theft, and there it is.There it is. They're dealing with theft.
There it is. They're dealing withtheft, theft. People are stealing
too much, the continuing rise ofonline shopping. I think about your own
habits. Are you even going intoa store anymore? Now? The former
USC I think, I am,I think, I am. I hope,
I am, I am, Iam. I think about your own
(13:37):
habits. Are you even going intoa store anymore? Yes, I went
to a store last night. Ilike that. I like getting the car
and going to Walmart with my wifeand we just look around, you know,
see the products, see the people. It's a lot of both,
a lot of both. And Ilove getting out there now. The former
US CEO of Toys r US,though, says the biggest issue is the
(13:58):
sales cost ratio is out of whack. Resoults have to generate same store sales
increases of three to four percent ayear to be healthy, and if they
don't do that, they can't living. Cost of doing business goes up by
three or four percent a year.Overall, retail sales only grew two point
three percent over the last year, and inflation sits at three point three percent,
(14:18):
so sales aren't keeping up with inflation, meaning consumers aren't buying as much.
Okay, all right, that's notpoor management, that's poor economy.
That's not management. You can't doanything to fight that. So while there
isn't one reason across the board forthese closures, when you have inflation coupled
with weakening consumer demand, that meansthat dynamic impacts the stores that are already
(14:41):
weak. They're going to continue struggling. Ah, that's the worst. That's
the worst. I don't know howwe're going to do it, but we
got to keep these stores open.Got to keep your grocery stores open,
your drug stores open. And again, I don't know how to do it
other than if you see somebody stealing, I think you got to report that.
I don't think we can no longer. I don't think we can,
you know, continue to watch peoplesteal right in front of us and not
(15:05):
do anything or say anything. Butthen if you do do something, you
can get stabbed to debt. SoI don't know. I don't know what
the answer is. I really don't. You're listening to Tim conwayjun you're on
demand from KFI Am six forty.Don't forget on Thursday, it's a big
night around here. We are goingto be carrying the presidential debate live between
(15:26):
Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Maybeyou heard of it. It's gonna be
on Thursday at six pm, andwe're gonna do a whole lead up to
it. We'll have a Krozier withhis analysis leading up to it. He's
our political guy, and you know, maybe in Alex Michaelson will pop in
and give us his opinion. Andit's gonna be a big night, though
(15:50):
huge. It's gonna be everywhere. It's gonna be super bold numbers. That's
what people say. I don't knowif it's true, but maybe maybe.
And that'll be Thursday, and itstarts at six it's gonna be an hour
and a half, so it'll gointo Moe's show, and it's going to
be Everyone will be talking about iton Friday. Everybody will have an opinion
(16:11):
of it on Friday, including everybodyat the station. So you gotta shune
in Friday now to hear what theopinions are and what was said on Thursday.
Big Dog, I think they callit. I think that's what they
call it. All right. OliveGarden one of my favorite joints to go
to. I know Krozier is abig Olive Garden guy, and I think
(16:33):
step Fush is an Olive Garden. Are you an Olive Garden guy? Yeah?
I love it. I haven't beenthere in a while, but I
love it. Yeah, Belly alittle too snobbiness light in there, but
I know Angel likes it. TheOlive Garden so good. What about what
did you say, Belly, youwouldn't get caught dead there? What'd you
say? I said? I wouldn'tbe caught there? There? You're right,
(16:53):
I'll go quite like the bread sticks. Okay, all right, all
right, Olive Garden. They're raisingtheir prices again, will continue increasing prices
after facing a drop in sales lastquarter. The company says the decrease comes
as it's usual, customers are strugglingwith food inflation. Did you hear that?
(17:15):
Let me play it again. Thedecrease comes as its usual, customers
are struggling with food inflation. Strugglingwith food inflation. I like the food,
and I like the prices. OliveGarden CEO, suggesting that despite the
drop in profits, it's actually worthit more for them to raise prices than
to offer discounts and an attempt toattract customers. Okay, so prices are
(17:41):
going up at Olive Garden. Theprices of food are going up at Olive
Garden. The all you can eatbreadsticks, all you can eat salad,
all you can eat pasta, it'sI think that's enough of all you can
eat. People are eating a lot. I think that might be what's wiping
them out. These people are goingin there and and just they don't stop
(18:02):
eating, and it's a long wait. Sometimes we go to the one in
Burbank and it's an hour and ahalf to get a table. A lot
of people like the Olive Garden. And I notice a lot of people are
going there in big numbers, andthen they run out before the bill gets
there. But they go in bignumbers with it for a birthday party or
wedding or I don't know, retirementparty, and it's a big deal.
(18:26):
Go the Olive Garden. They gota great chicken parmesan there at the Olive
Garden. That's good, good eating, little salty. I'll give them that.
They don't you know, they're notskimping on salt at Olive Garden.
There is a there's an Olive Gardenabout two miles right down the street from
me, near where the Montclair Plazais. Been there for as long as
(18:49):
I can remember, decades and it'sstill you drive by there, like you
say, those benches right outside thedoor, they're full, Yeah, people
waiting to get in. Is abrick rock on the outside the structure,
because man, they build those thingssolid. Oh yeah yeah. And like
I said, I know that thatparticular one has been there for decades.
(19:10):
Yeah, the one in Burbank wego to. You know, my wife
loves it. She grew up onOlive Garden and we go, I don't
know, once or twice a month, and the service is great. I
read a thing, I don't knowhow true it is, that somebody really
wanted one of those cheese graders thatthey have with a little handle. Oh,
I love those. And they saidthat they you could go in there
and you could buy one, oh, from Olive Guarden. Yeah, I
(19:32):
used one. Yeah. Well,I don't know if they're used or I
think I read something where they weretalking talking to the host or whoever were
the manager, and the guy didn'teven get out the full sentence of what
he wanted. The guy went inthe back and brought him out one.
Really yeah, Oh that makes sensethough, because my wife likes the boots
there. We bought a booth's onehundred and fifty dollars held the guy was
a booth. One of the busboys helped us out of there with it.
(19:56):
You bought a red booth at homeplay good? Yeah, you can
fit it in the navigate. Youlike a picture on the wall all of
garden, it's yours seventy five dollars. Man. They sell everything out there.
The Lakers have a brand new coach. A brand new coach, the
Los Angeles Lakers. Let's find outwho it is. JJ Reddick. Happy
(20:17):
birthday to JJ Reddick, Happy fortiethbirthday, certainly a birthday he will always
remember. As the Lakers officially introducedhim today as the lakers next head coach,
and immediately he joked and said, you may have heard I don't have
any NBA coaching experience. Of course, that's what everybody's been talking about.
But really his journey began about twentytwo years ago, and that's when he
(20:41):
of course entered the Duke basketball program, and he was coached by the legendary
Mike Skrzyzewski and has been a studentever since. He did say he is
the only guy that I call coach. Other coaches I've been calling him by
the first name, but coach Skrzyzewskior coach k it's always been. Even
during his final NBA season as aplayer in Dallas, under the guidance of
(21:02):
Ray Carlisle, Reddick thought about coaching. Other opportunities may have been in front
of him, but this is thejob he wanted and was sufficially offered and
agreed upon on Thursday, becoming thetwenty seventh head coach in the Lakers story
franchise history. I've gotten to dosome amazing stuff in my life. All
right, this might be the best. And it's when I think about this
(21:25):
job in particular, it's not justabout getting the job. What I wanted
to do was do the job.I wanted to coach the Los Angeles Lakers,
and so that was that was whereI landed on pursuing this versus potential
other opportunities. Here you go,he sounds exactly like Tom Brady. It's
not just about getting the job. What I wanted to do was do the
(21:49):
job, all right, Coach Reddick. Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob
Polinka said today that the one thingthat impressed him the most about JJ Reddick
was his ability to communicate with players, especially the players in this era of
the National Basketball Association. Of course, JJ Reddick has a very popular and
(22:11):
successful podcast with Lebron James, buthe said that won't be available as long
as he is the Lakers head coach, and he hopes it won't be available
for a very very long time,Jovanna, Which means he would have a
lot of experience as a Lakers headcoach in the NBA. All right,
there you go. That's a bigmove. Laker is a huge part of
(22:33):
Los Angeles. Have a brand newcoach. That's a big deal. You're
listening to Tim Conway Junior on demandfrom kfi am six forty guys. You
know, they find out what theylike in life and they stick with it.
I have a friend who wears thesame tennis shoes. Is it raw
Stan Smith? Is that Stan Smitha shoe? I think it is.
(22:56):
He started wearing his name. I'lltell you his name. There's Robbie Fon.
He's a writer in Hollywood, friendof mine forever, and he bought
Stan Smith in high school. Youknow, the white shoes a little green
emblem on it. Yeah, yeah, today, still wears only Stan Smith.
That's a rat. Now I've ventureout. You know, I'm a
(23:18):
I wouldn't say a trendsetter or asoothsayer or I don't know a fashion mogel,
but I do get out there, and I'm wearing the very popular La
Gear shoes right now. It's awinner. I guess I was nineteen eighty
four in the Lake Gear. ButI found him at Big five. They
(23:41):
were on sale for twenty nine dollarsand I bought them. They're nice looking
shoes. Thank you, Thank you, Belly. I appreciate that you're great.
They still make La Gear. Honestly, got angel. I don't know
what I did to you, butI'm gonna fly down. I know where
you live, I know you work. I'm gonna break your paddle board in
half. I could be down thereby seven, break your paddleboard, and
(24:03):
happy home by eight thirty. Easily. You're a pilot now too. How
dare you? Taylor Swift? Bellyo'sfavorite is in the news now, Belly,
I will say that you came tothe table, or to the albums,
or to the phonograph late I did. You didn't become a Taylor Swift
fan until recently. That's true,but you're still a big fan. I
(24:26):
have made up for my years ofnot fully appreciating her, her talent.
She's great. Huh, she's great. Yeah. Well, here's surprise for
a Swifties. At tonight's Taylor Swiftconcert in London, she brought out a
very special guest, her boyfriend TravisKelcey. Wow. I didn't know that.
(24:49):
Wow. Quite the reception for thisyoung man. How old is he?
He's thirty thirty four? Thirty four? Oh okay, wow, I
like this guy. Fan's cheering asyou can hear at Wembley Stadium as the
NFL star grace the stage in atuxedo and top hat carrying Taylor Swift on
this stage. He joined Swift forher outfit change for her song I Can
(25:11):
Do It with a Broken Heart, which is now part of her era's tour.
This is the first time that Kelseyhas joined Swift on stage, and
he went all out with some dancemoves of his own too. Wow,
all right, I think I'm goingto do that around here? What's that?
I think I'm gonna have my wifeon the show? Bring around,
do some dance Move'd love to haveher on this, Yes, just carry
(25:33):
her onto the air and then dosome dance move maybe. Well, it
made sense what he did on stage. What did he do? Well?
She has a She does one songThe Smallest Man, and she kind of
like falls to the ground, andthen the next song is I Can Do
It with a Broken Heart, andher dancers would pick her up and try
to get her like you gotta getgoing, And so they had him come
(25:56):
out in a tuxedo and carry herand encourage her to get up and move
on. Is that right? Itwas cute? So, Bob, have
you been to one of the showsyet? No? Oh, you should
go? Well I can't. Whyis that? Well? Listen you're bro
me tickets. No, I'm notgoing to buy your tickets. Why Why?
Because I had don't know that kindof money. You had a daughter
(26:18):
going to college, and I canfly you around the world to the see
Taylor Swift whatever what not, whateveryou know, and I don't even feel
bad about it. I don't feelbad. I can send you to get
a meal at Rosco's Chicken and Waffle. Okay, Oh wait, they're closing
too. Everybody's closing. This isa bummer. Roscoe's House of Chicken and
Waffles has closed it's Pasadena location. What the last day of operation was yesterday?
(26:44):
The sign outside the restaurant says thecompany is searching for a new location
in Pasadena. That particular Roscos hasbeen an operation though for thirty years.
Thirty years in Pasadena, and theyshut down that particular Roscos. It's been
an operation though for thirty years. There's no reason given for the closing.
Rosco's has had financial problems in thepast though, including filing for bankruptcy.
(27:07):
I think that's the reason. There'sno reason given for the closing. Okay,
there's no reason given for the closing. And then the next statement,
Rosco's has had financial problems. Rosco'shad financial problems. Ah, I'm putting
two and two together. I thinkthat's the reason Rosco's has had financial problems
in the past, though, includingfiling for bankruptcy in twenty sixteen. Oh.
(27:27):
No, everybody's closing down. Wegot to get out there more often.
Got to get out there and keepthese businesses open. Go to a
restaurant or retail. Got to gosomewhere because they're closing everything. And what
are we going to do just sitaround and then go to you know,
cook at home. No, Oh, you got to get out there.
(27:49):
I was at McDonald's over the weekend, not bragging, but made a couple
of bucks and slide into McDonald's.It was in Monrovia at McDonald's, very
clean, very nice, McDonald's offof I think Colorado, and I go
through the drive through. I geta hamburger, small fries, small coke.
That's my order. Usually fills meup, and it did, and
(28:11):
it was very good. The hamburgerwas great, the fries were really hot,
the coke was perfect. It wasreally a great meal. And I
sat there in the parking lot eightby myself. But when I went through
the drive room. I said tothe guy at the window, I said,
hey, are you guys offering yourfive dollars value meal yet? And
he said what's that? I said, oh, I don't know if you
(28:33):
heard. Well, McDonald's is goingto be offering a five dollar value meal.
