It's KMF I AM six forty andyou're listening to The Conway Show on demand
on the iHeartRadio app. Hello,No, it's big classic Bob Newhart team

(00:27):
from his original series, The HipShow in the seventies. Give it a
listen, and those who were aliveduring that decade, maybe this hits you.
Bob Newharten Now, he played atherapist in this series and it allowed

(00:52):
for all of these different characters towash through his life. It was really
quite extraordinary. Such a gifted comedianand comic actor. We RKFI AM six
forty live everywhere in the iHeartRadio appit is the Conway Show. Mark Thompson's
sitting in for Tim and it's justsuch sad news. I mean, he
was ninety four years old. Whata life, what a career. And

(01:19):
his manner as a comedian served himso well. I mean, his material
was just just terrific, but hismanner, his style was so perfect,
the stammering kind of deadpan way inwhich he would deal with the madness around
him. So on television. Inthe sitcoms, both that one and the

(01:41):
one that followed a decade later,he was the guy in the middle of
it as all these sort of extremepersonalities would interact with him. It was
just a really great idea, butit had to be executed perfectly, and
at the center of it was thisguy who really could execute it perfectly.
The writing and the other performances, the ensemble performances Bob Newhart shows were just

(02:06):
so terrific. Now, I'll mentionthat I told Wayne Resnic, because we
were kind of chatting before the show, that the last time I saw Bob
Newhart in person. I didn't knowBob Newhart personally. I mean I'd met
him a couple of times. Hewasn't a personal friend or anything. I

(02:27):
mean I was in awe of him, as many of us were. But
the last time I saw him inthe flesh was at Tim's dad's funeral.
At that service, and he spoke. At Tim Conway's service, I think
there were four speakers and he wasone of them. And as he walked

(02:53):
up to the platform, Bob Newhartwas walking very slowly and in sort of
a very labored way, and heclimbed the maybe three steps up to the
lecturn and then he got up tothe lectern and he said in that Bob
Newhart voice, he said, I'mnot doing Tim Conway's old man character.

(03:20):
That's the way I walk now,is what he's said. It was a
really great line, and it,of course it made everybody laugh. It
was the last time that I sawhim in person. What a brilliant,
brilliant comedian. And the beginnings ofBob Newhart were as a stand up the

(03:42):
show business beginnings, and his albumsexploded in popularity. We had them in
our house and I'm gonna play youa little bit. And you younger boys
and girls, you may not evenbe aware that this was the Bob Newhart
that existed and really kicked the dooropen to these shows. But this is

(04:03):
his style. This Bob Newhart withthe stammering and the you know, sort
of like stuff going on around himand him trying to kind of maintain some
sort of equilibrium. This is themagic of his comedy. And so on
this day when he passes, here'sa little bit of Bob Newhart from one

(04:25):
of his early albums. This isthe night Watchman at the Empire State Building,
the night that King Kong is climbingthe building, and new Heart's premise
is he's the new night watchman andhis first night, King Kong is climbing

(04:49):
the building and he doesn't know whatto do. And I think the as
I recall, he kind of callsinto, you know, the home office
to find out what the first problemyou run into your first day on the
job was never covered in any ofany of the sessions. Now with this
kind of prologue, this may seemkind of a jump. My favorite movie

(05:10):
is King Kong, the monster movie. This is the greatest monster movie ever
made. And the biggest scene,of course, the one you all remember
from King Kong is when King Kongclimbs the outside of the Empire State Building.
All right, now, putting thesetwo thoughts together, this is the
night that King Kong climbs the outsideof the Empire State Building. It's also

(05:36):
the first night on the job fora new guard. See, this is
his first night on the job. He's gone through a week's orientation on the
problems he's going to face, andit happens to be the night that King
Kong climbs the outside of the EmpireStatement. Hello, Hello, mister,

(06:03):
mister mister Nelson. Yes, thisthis is Sam Hennessy, the the the
new Guard. Yeah, sir,I you know I hate to bother you
at home like this on on myfirst night, but uh see something's come

(06:24):
up, sir. And it's notit's not covered in in the guard's manual.
Yeah. I looked in the index, yes, sir, I looked
under an authorized personnel and uh andpeople without passes and and apes and apes
toes, apes and apes toes.Yes, sir. Uh there there's an

(06:47):
apes toe sticking through the window, sir. Well, see, I see
this isn't your standard apes, sir. I mean he's between eighteen and nineteen
stories high, depending on whether there'sa thirteenth floor or not. Well,

(07:15):
sir, I'm you know, I'msure there's a rule against against apes shaking
the building. There is, yes, So I yell at his feet,
you know, I said, Isaid a shoe ape, and I'm sorry,

(07:40):
but you're going to have to leave, sir. So you get a
sense of both the premise and theexecution. And the guy was just he
was just money. Do you knowhow many Emmys he won? Well,
how many? Take a guess whiparound? Oh yeah, I could do
a whip whip on the New HeartEmmys. Yeah, all right it how

(08:01):
many Amies? How many Emmys didBob Newhart win? Let's start with as
always like he's smiling before he evensay his name because he knows Steph.
How many Amies that Bob Newhart win? I'll say three? All right,
let's go to Mark, Mark, what do you say? How many Emmys?

(08:22):
Eleven? Eleven? About Sharon?I'm going thirteen, thirteen? Full
of tim. I'm not sure she'san attention and uh, let's go to
Angel. Let's go with let's gotwenty twenty. Ain't going for the extreme?

(08:43):
All right? One more, Lindsey, how many guesses, Bob?
How many Emmys did Bob Newhart win? Seven? The answer, You're all
wrong. Bob Newhart won one Emmy? What? One? Thirteen? And
when we come back from the break, we're going to tell you when and
for what show he won that Emmy? Four? Wow? No looking,

(09:07):
no peaking, no cheating, nounreal, what a surprising. It's not
done yet. It all right,we'll get to that. So Bob new
a better whip when we come back, and there's a better whip. A
better whip is being teased everyone. This is incredible. What a way to
start the show. A whip andthen a promise of a better whip bringing

(09:30):
the funk. All right, weremember the great Bob Newhart among others.
There's also another passing. As Isay, we'll go to the Republican National
Convention Live to Alex Michaelson bottom ofthe hour. So much to do as
we continue, you're listening to TimConway Junior on demand from KFI AM six
forty. Now, we were talkingabout the passing of Bob Newhart. What

(09:54):
an incredible life and career as anentertainer passes away at ninety four, and
we were just astounded. I was, anyway, by the fact that we're
kind of trying to guess how manyEmmys he'd want. Two enormously successful television
series that became part of the notonly the television landscape, but it was
like one of those things that becamesomething in the cultural landscape. You know,

(10:18):
in the second series where he runsthat inn, they're the two brothers
with the same name or something, remember that whole My name's Larry, Larry,
and this is my brother Daryl,my other brother Darrey Arrel exactly.
It was just the cast of characterswere so funny, and same was true
with the first series. So thenwhen Krozer told us he's only won one

(10:39):
Emmy in his television I like that. Krozier wanted me to be suspended for
saying thirteen, what do you thinkhe won a lot of Emmys? Yeah?
No, it sounded like you'll neverbelieve how many Emmys you won.
And that was only before I heardAngel guest twenty Angel, you always make
me look better. I uh,well, to be fair, to be
fair, I'm thinking two super successfulseries. They ran, I mean multiple

(11:03):
seasons, maybe close to ten yearsa piece. So it's not if you
won an Emmy for every year thatwas on the air, and maybe multiple
Emmys within the show for writing, producing, whatever it might be. Maybe
there are those multiple emies. SoI was thinking, well, maybe that's
how you got to a high number. So I also was trying to think
sort of how many Emmys could aperson conceivably win? And then you did

(11:24):
the great thing, which is payoff. Uh uh, he only won one.
Now what's the second whip you've goton him? Well, let's go
down the list first, because theseare all the shows that he was on
that he could have gotten an Emmy. Four. So I'll give you a
listen. Then you guys have toguess which show it was. He got
his one okay four. He hadThe Bob Newhart Show from nineteen seventy two
to nineteen seventy eight. Six yearsof that New Heart the second version of

(11:46):
it eighty two, nineteen eighty twoto nineteen ninety so eight years of that.
He was on The Gary Shandlin ShowBack in the Day, Murphy Brown,
Big Show, Back in the Day, The Simpsons. He made an
appearance song E R made an appearanceon Big Bang Theory, Desperate Housewives,
n CIS. He hosted The TonightShow eighty seven times Wow, and he

(12:09):
hosted Saturday Night Live twice. Soout of all those he got one Emmy.
Which show did he win that Emmy? Four? This is great.
Start out with my favorite Steph.I'll guess n CIS. All right,
that is wrong, Let's go tomar Thompson. I'm gonna guess The Simpsons.

(12:33):
The Simpsons, that is wrong.Let's go to We can't go to
Sharon because she knows. Let's goto Lindsay. I don't know all those
shows that I've mentioned, Murphy Brown, Simpsons, Er, Big Bang Theory,
Desperate Housewives, n CIS, hostedBig tent Lindsay wit, Wow,
the pride of knowing you got aquestion? Yeah, you win our respect

(13:00):
to Lindsay, how about a littlesomething for that? Thank you? It's
the only show she recognized. Iwas going to say, that's probably what
it was. Well, you knewhim in what movie? Lindsay, you
know him? And what very famousChristmas movie movie? I learned this like
an hour ago, Elf. Wow, you just turned it an hour ago.

(13:20):
It was in three maybe that wasbefore your time. It was like
four, which is a perfect timeto watch Elf. Yeah, I think
so too. I mean, itreally is a beloved Christmas comedy now,
and it has moved up the ranksin a lot of people's heads of their
favorite Christmas movies, including myself.Yeah, Krozer's right. I mean I

(13:41):
think in many movie critics and otheryou know, entertainment lists that you'll find
it might be in the top fiveof Christmas movies. So he says,
my agent sent me the script thisis about Elf, and I fell in
love with it. And he saidthat he told his wife that the was
going to be another miracle on thirtyfourth Street, where people watch it every

(14:03):
year. In my opinion, therehas not been anything like it in the
interim. People wanted to believe init. People need that charming, wonderful
thing about the Christmas Spirit and itsway of powering the sleigh. So he
knew when he read the script thatit was going to be that big wow.
He's in the Television Hall of Fame, inducted in ninety three. He

(14:24):
had his material added to the collectionof the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
He won the Kennedy Centers two thousandand two Mark Twain Prize for American
Humor. Four kids, Jennifer Courtney, Timothy and Robert, many grandchildren,
and his wife Jinny of sixty yearspassed away last year. Yeah, Bob

(14:48):
Newhart, legendary comedian passes away atninety four. When we come back,
we're going to go to the RepublicanNational Convention. This is a big night.
You know who is speaking tonight?I know Donald Trump is speaking tonight,
But besides Donald Trump, Hulk Hoganis speaking to us. That's right,

(15:09):
brother, Let me have a wordwith you about about the best candidate
out there. Brother. He hasa long relationship with the wwe does Donald
Trump. Yeah, so we'll discussit. It's a big WWE knight in
addition to a big Trump night atthe RNC. A lot of people are
saying that that's basically how they ARENChas been run this week, very spectacular.
And you know he even came inwhen he came in that first night,

(15:31):
walked into the place like it waslike a w Yeah, now that
you say it, I reflect onthe way he walked in, and I
think that's exactly right. All Right, we'll talk. We'll talk live with
Alex Michaelson, who is there aswe continue, Alex Elex Elex next.
Uh, are you making this harderthan it needs to be? No?

(15:54):
No, No, okay, Iwonder why you pronounce the name like that.
He spells it e l e xElex. Yeah. All right,
all right, Mark Thompson here forTim Conway Junior KFI. Everything had been
going perfectly well. Uh, KFIgreat, you're great. You're listening to
Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI am six forty. We go to

(16:18):
the r n C. This isthe big crescendo night Donald Trump expected to
speak and I'm excited about all myfavorite wrestlers are going to be there.
They're dusting off that Hal Cogan. All right, brother, let's get it
on. This is Alex Michaelson atthe r n C in Milwaukee. Hello,
sir, let's go. So DanaWhite, Dana White, Who's who's

(16:45):
who runs that league? I guessright, it is Dana White UFC or
what a White UFC? Yeah.Cogan of course comes from World Wrestling.
We just heard from Lynda McMahon, who used to be the c of WWE.
She spoke, and then Kid Rockis going to be performing too.

(17:06):
It's funny because they keep talking abouttonight being the night about unifying, about
coming together, about being a littlesofter, and then every speaker are fighters,
like the most aggressive alpha male energyover and over again. So it'll
be interesting. We heard a KidRock doing a sound check earlier when I

(17:26):
was doing our morning show, andhe's redone his words of his songs and
lyrics to be a Trump inspired songabout fighting back, and so we're going
to hear a lot of that tonightbefore the main event, which is Donald
Trump's first major speech that he's givensince that shooting last week. Wow,
this all called exists as the Democrats. It seems like the drum beat to

(17:51):
replace Joe Bidener, for Joe Bidento step back has gotten louder and louder,
and sort of to a point nowthat he may have no choice.
It does start to have the feelof the dam is broken and there's like
no coming back. When you've gota situation with leaks about Nancy Pelosi,

(18:15):
leaks about Kim Jeffries and Chuck Schumerand others. When you see new polling
that came out today that showed himbehind in every single swing state, significantly
behind nationally to Donald Trump, thatat least the reporting in the New York
Times and Acxios in other places andreally respective reporters seem to be that the
president is starting to get there. That's a bit of a process to get

(18:38):
him there mentally to accept this factthat the idea of walking away from this
job that he's wanted for fifty years, that's complicated, but it appears timing
wise, reading the tea leaves thatthat decision could be made within the next
week, and maybe the COVID giveshim a pivot, you know, potentially

(19:03):
last thing I'm told I'm only Ihave a minute more with you. The
the theme for the last day ismake America great once again. Will what
are you hearing? Will the speechfrom Donald Trump be one of unifying his
party, try to unify the nation, trying to, you know, speak
to those who might not be inthe party tent. What have you heard?

(19:26):
Well? I spoke with Kevin McCarthythis morning, the former House speaker
who has spoken several times with PresidentTrump since the shooting, and he seemed
to think that the speech will bethe unifying theme that Trump has gotten,
the message that it's been trying tobring the country together, try to bring
some folks into the tent that havenot been in the tent traditionally, not

(19:47):
as much of a red meat speech, but something a little bit more to
try to bring some of those independentswho may not have voted for him before
and give them a different way tolook at him. If he does that,
which is not always instinct, thatcould be really politically smart and could
give him a really big lead comingout of this as the Democrats, at

(20:08):
least the Democratic candidate right now,has been in a political free fall.
I also see that Tucker Carlson ison the list of speakers. Yes,
indeed, Tucker Carlton will be speakingas well tonight. And I'm hearing that
Milania Trump and Avanka Trump are goingto be in the house tonight. We
have not seen them yet at thisconvention. I don't believe they're going to

(20:30):
be speaking, but I think theywill be here. I love that we've
got a chance to chat with you. I'll let you go. I know
you're very busy, but remind everybodybecause I think Friday tomorrow you're doing an
issue is a wrap on the RNC, right, yeah, well, yeah,
I mean we're doing live coverage atfive, six, ten, and
eleven o'clock tonight. I'll be onour morning show tomorrow morning at seven,

(20:52):
eight nine in the morning, andthen a big issue is half hour special
on All This tomorrow night at tenthirty. So thank you for that,
and and here we go. Yeah, look look forward to tonight and to
hearing your take on it as well. Thanks Alex Michaelson. All right,
talk soon, Alex Michaelson from Foxeleven and all of those different reports that

(21:14):
he'll be issuing. So it's reallya uh, you know, it's the
Hollywood Squares of the Republican Party. In terms of speakers, you know,
by the way, I have toapologize because I think it's your accent that
was kind of Jacko with me.It really just sounds like you're saying Alex
instead of Alex. Oh, yeah, Alex, Alex Michaels, Oh you
think I'm I'm oh, I see. You were giving me a hard time

(21:34):
because you thought I was saying Alex. Yeah. No, no, no.
I always say Alex, but maybeit doesn't. You know, we
say it quickly, so apology exceptinguh. But Mike Pompeio, the former
Secretary of State, and Linda McMahonhas mentioned Tucker Carlson, Haul Cogan,
and Alena Habba, who's Trump's attorney, all scheduled to speak. I don't

(21:57):
know, did you mention that DanaWhite as well? Well, yeah,
Dana White. I'm going to getto Dana White. Franklin Graham, Eric
Trump, the former president's son.Of course, Dana White, CEO of
the UFC, all set to speakin the hour before Donald Trump. So
quite a set up crew for theformer president who will then take the lectern

(22:19):
and delivered that speech that Alex wastalking about fireworks. Are you predicting,
oh, like literal uh? Orjust like confetti CONTI confetti balloon drop is
what I'm gonna guess. I'll tellyou. I think the indoor fireworks sometimes
can lead to, you know, things going sideways. I don't think they

(22:41):
want to take that chance. Everything'sgone so well. Trump probably doesn't want
to see anything like that. Hedoesn't want any bangs or loud noise is
good for the balloon. Trump supposedto be like the most balloons being dropped
indoors. There's never been anything likeit, never been a balloon drop like
this, So glad you mentioned it. Angel. It's greatest drop of balloons
ever. They're not even calling ita balloon drop. They're making up new

(23:04):
terms. A lot of people aresaying they've never seen anything like it,
and it hasn't even happened yet.The highlights we will share with you here
on KFI when we come back. What a remarkable story that high speed chase
was yesterday and it got even moreremarkable today. You're listening to Tim Conway

(23:29):
Junior on demand from KFI AM sixtyYesterday at this time, it was a
little later than this particular time, but it was around this time yesterday there
was a high speed chase through downtownLA and it was wild. It was
again, high speeds through residential areas, dangerous moves, wrong side of the

(23:55):
road. It was you know,it's right out of a movie. And
because of the way the car wasset up with tinted windows, et cetera,
couldn't really see what was going oninside the car. And then as
a standoff hit, this guy emergeswith an infant in his arms. And

(24:18):
then the other passenger in the carwas a woman, and she exited the
car, and the complexities and weirdnessof the whole thing began to be something
that we talked about on the air. Well. Now, a day later
we learned that the robbery suspect again, the guy who was being chased,

(24:44):
was being chased because of a robbery. He was live streaming the entire thing
going the wrong way. Oh no, look at this. He is gutting
it going the wrong direction on JeffersonBoulevard. Look at all but the traffic
there is here. He is happyto navigate traffic going in both directions,
zig zagging across the median ear Thedriver also live streaming the pursuit from behind

(25:08):
the wheel as a woman who saysshe's the infant's mother pleads for him to
pull over and surrender. Kill me. Your hands up. Baby's in a
cord, bro bro, just pullover, your hands up a cord.

(25:30):
The driver eventually turning down a deadend street where he tries to back up,
but the car is quickly penned inby sheriff's cruisers as several deputies are
seen rushing forward with guns drawn, taking aim right at the car. Moments
later, the driver opens his door, and that's when we can clearly see
the tiny infant in his lap. We'll see here, We'll have a really
clear few here in a second thatappears to be a small infant in his

(25:52):
arms, the baby appearing to beunharmed after being taken along during this wild
and dangerous drive. That livestream alertingdeputies to the fact that there was an
infant in the vehicle, and theysay that took their pursuit to level ten.
I'm not relactive. Baby in acorne go guds winding to ther,

(26:12):
that's wild that we didn't know somethingthat deputies did know. So they were
aware of the fact that he waslive streaming it, and because of that
they handled the chase in a differentway. I'm not relative baby in a
corne go guds warning to in thecor bro You're not thinking about your baby,

(26:37):
right baby? A desperate plead toescape as a suspect live streams a
dangerous pursuit with this two month oldbaby and the child's mother in the backseat.
Hey yeah, you gotta blul overand put your hands up from the
baby in the cord bro. Thevideo now part of the investigation in the
What is he thinking at that pointis why is he live streaming it?

(26:57):
Can you explain that to me?Is it show voting that he's doing?
Kind of look at me, I'mrunning from the cops. Sitting during the
video, he talks a lot abouthe's afraid he's gonna get killed by the
police. And that's the only thingI can think of is that he wants
to document it to some degree.I see the video now part of the
investigation into the heart pounding pursuit rightthrough the red light, a rat traffic

(27:19):
that ended with deputies rescuing the babygirl. My concern was the baby.
She was crying and I just wantedto comfort her. My motherly instincts kicked
in. It all began when authoritiestried to stop a robbery suspect and Exposition
Park. He was one of threemen being pursued after a robbery in Beverly
Hills. They bailed out of theircar, two were arrested. The third

(27:40):
investigator say carjack his child's mother andcontinued the pursuit, adding in the live
stream, is our very right theycarjacked his child's mother. Jez continued the
pursuit, adding in the live stream, this is our baby right, stop
row. Not only is this guydriving like a madman. Not only does
he have his two month old daughterin the car and his child's mother,

(28:07):
but he's also taking the time toget on his phone and livestream the whole
thing. The suspect weaving in andout of traffic, zigzagging his way across
the city, over the media, desperate to get around these busy intersections.
The driver finally trapped by a deadend. Sheriff's deputy surrounding the car,
guns drawn, everyone on edge, knowing the infant was in the car and
at risk. Often times in situationslike these, again, the thing is,

(28:32):
yesterday we didn't know what the copsknew, which is that this guy
was live streaming and that there wasan infant in the car, so they
were aware of that. Even asthe pursuit was going, Onef's deputy surrounding
the car, guns drawn, everyoneon edge, knowing the infant was in
the car and at risk. Oftentimes, in situations like these, the
bad guys used the baby as ashield. And it's a great moment of

(28:55):
cowardice that when you witness it,you kind of it pumps the brakes on
everything as a far there. Youjust can't put yourself in that position as
a good father. So when yousee a father do that to their child,
it it strikes a chord in youthat that you want to make sure
that you do everything in your powerto bring this guy to justice. The
dangerous driver finally giving up, takeninto custody, his baby girl rescued,
I mean dangerous driver doesn't begin totalk. I mean dangerous driver. So

(29:19):
did they know that that that thebaby was his? Yes, well they
knew there's a baby in the car. It was live streaming, and she
did in the live stream say you'reit's your baby. Yeah, you're right,
You're you're endangering your baby, bro, you know what I mean.
That's curious to me. Considering whatwe were talking about yesterday as we were

(29:40):
watching it live here during the timkind of junior show philled by Mark Thompson,
that they were staying really close behindhim. Yeah, Like, yeah,
I guess you could. You know, a lot of times they say
they pull back because the dangerous natureof how somebody's driving. He was driving
dangerously with a baby in the car, and they stayed on him like that.
Yeah, it's interesting. The Crowsis making a very good point because

(30:00):
we talked about this actually yesterday wewere talking about whether or not protocol would
suggest that they lean back a littlebit, kind of let him because he
was driving so aggressively, so fast, wrong side of the road. And
to Crows's point, it seemed thatthere was a little elasticity to the way
they were on him, and thenthey fell back a little bit. But
for the most part they stayed withhim in pretty tight ways, even as

(30:25):
they blocked off streets and tried toprevent, you know, a collision of
some kind from like cross traffic. And maybe they stayed with him, Crows,
because of that kid in the car, you know, But as you
say, it can be the lawof unintended consequences. Yeah. If the
point of pulling back is because theydon't want to endanger other people, Yeah,
then staying on them actually makes himdrive faster and perhaps more recklessly.

(30:47):
Yeah. Yeah, that's what I'mcurious about it, especially now and knowing
that we know that they knew therewas a baby in right, and this
is the this is the information oftoday that they knew that Dander's driver finally
giving up, taken into custody, his baby girl rests unharmed, and that
little girl ultimately reunited with her motherwho has not arrested. That driver now
facing a long list of charges. That is the wrap on that it was
