Speaker 2 (00:41):
Welcome to five to Thrive Live, a podcast about thriving
for those who've been affected by cancer and chronic disease.
I'm doctor Lisau Schuler. I co hosts with my good
friend Carolyn Gazella. You can find all of our past
podcasts on iHeartRadio, Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, Stitcher, and you can
also find our schedule on ithriveplan dot com. So tonight,

(01:04):
I'm very excited I'll be talking with nature pathic doctor
Baljit Kamba about a unique nutrition powder which is designed
specifically to support recovery and resilience. This is an unusual
show for us because this is a sponsored episode, and
we're very excited to do this sponsored episode because the
quality of this product is second to none. The design

(01:29):
that went into the product is absolutely fantastic, and this
is something that's unique and deserves to be heard and
known about. So joining us is doctor Balge Kamba. She's
a licensed naturepathic doctor, educator, and triple negative breast cancer survivor.
She integrates her personal experience with her clinical expertise to

(01:50):
support women navigating life after cancer. As a speaker, researcher, educator,
and formulator. She is passionate about advancing evidence based nature
pathic oncology. Doctor Kamba developed Nourish Resilience, which is what
we'll be talking about this evening. So I'm going to
let her give you the details on this plant based

(02:11):
therapeutic nutrition powder, which is again designed specifically to support
recovery and some other critical functions in the body. Doctor
Komba teaches integrated medicine to nature pathic medical students. She
serves as a mentor in the field and her mission
is to empower women to thrive beyond survivorships with strength,
clarity and compassion. So again, before we jump into our conversation,

(02:37):
I want to thank our sponsor for the show Nourish Resilience.
This is a clinically informed, functional and holistic nutrition support
with clean organic vegan protein made from mung bean, almond
and pumpkin seeds, and it features evidence based antioxidants, medicinal mushrooms, adaptogens,

(03:00):
fermented ginger and gut supportive prebiotics. Sounds very healthy and
I happen to know delicious as well. So hello, Belji,
welcome to five to Thrive Live.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
Thank you, thank you so much for having me. I'm
really excited to be a part of the show today.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Absolutely, and I'm excited to talk with you about this
unique nutritional product. But you know what, before we do that,
we'd like to just get to know our guests a
little bit more.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
So let's start with you, because you.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Know, it was mentioned in your bio that you have
had a history of triple negative breast cancer yourself, and
I'm wondering if you could just talk a little bit
about how your own experience with cancer has, you know,
influenced what you're doing today, and just share a little
bit about that experience.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
Absolutely so, right, I've mentioned I was this advanced stage
triple negative breast cancer person, and happy birthday to me.
I was, you know, just turned forty, and this was
my this is what I ended up what I ended
up finding, and you know what, as trying as it was,
you know, and and I went through the whole journey.

(04:10):
I did the chemo, the surgery, uverectomy, and you know,
double mistectomies and all, you know, reconstruction. I did it all,
but through that I realized that there was this entire
picture of resilience that came through that sort of tied
through everything. And so it gave me the the insight

(04:34):
and the strength to keep moving and to try to
come up with innovative ideas and you know, really put
myself in this thinking seat. And you know, not only that,
I also ended up, you know, after everything I went through,
I ended up having a baby at forty five. The
healing was layered with realities of being a new mother,

(04:54):
and so, you know, cancer really taught me that resilience
piece in a truly personal way, and that's what fuels
my work even as I move on today. You know,
that was the fundamental foundation, was this picture of resilience,
because that idea of you know, what I wanted to
do and who I wanted to be in this, you know,
and in my mind it was perhaps you know, unconventional

(05:17):
to what I'd see my friends and colleagues near me
going through. So I but I feel like this really
helped to pave a way for me. And I know
there's a lot of other people who are in similar
situations to me, so I thought this would be a
great way to highlight that.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Yeah, it's really I'm you know, sorry you had to
go through that. But as another fellow breast cancer survivor myself,
I think it's these experiences, which these harsh blessings as
they are, you know, they really deepen our own commitments
to the health within ourselves but also of course within
our patients. And I'm wondering if you could speak a
little bit to that as well, how has your own

(05:54):
experience of having had cancer influenced how you are as
an h pathic doctor.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
You know what? It actually it changed everything, honestly, like
I was completely I'm sure you could relate to that.
So you know, now I understand things from a firsthand perspective.
So I understand fatigue. I know, I understand fatigue, you know,
And I know the brain fog and I can I've

(06:23):
lived through the anxiety and you know, and the lingering
effects of treatment. So I've gone through it all. I've
been a part of that journey. So now when I
sit with my patients, I not only do I meet
them as a clinician now, but I'm also someone who's
walked the path, So I feel like my approach has
become much more empathetic, a lot more practical, I have

(06:47):
to say, And now the focus has become let's focus
on sustainable strategies that support one's in long term wellness
and recovery. So I feel like, oh, yeah, completely night
and day difference.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Mm hmm, Yeah, I would completely agree with that. It's,
you know, there's something about walking the path yourself and
giving you that very clear sense of empathy with what
another person experience or what they are experiencing, but also
just an ability I find almost to witness another's path

(07:25):
in a different way, in a more authentic way.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Yeah, and very output.

Speaker 4 (07:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Okay, so let's move on to what we're really here
to talk about, which in that context is nutrition. And
we all know that nutrition is very important during cancer,
during its treatment and certainly during its recovery. And in fact,
a lot of people who have had breast cancer and
treatment for breast cancer emerge as survivors with you know,

(07:52):
perhaps managing their cancer as a chronic disease or perhaps
being disease free, but they're in survivorship, but they are
not symptom free. They often will have various types of
inflammatory processes going on. They might have some bone loss,
some fatigue, some cognitive fogs, some hormonal shifts. I mean,
there's a whole slew of things that can happen. So

(08:13):
given the variety of issues out there, is there in
fact a one size fits all nutritional solution for these people?

Speaker 3 (08:21):
Ah? You know, honestly, I really really wish there was,
But I'm going to be honest here. The truth is no.
So we have to value that each person. They are unique, right,
we are all unique individuals. But that being said, there
are foundational strategies that consistently help, so things that we

(08:43):
can really focus on from a global perspective. We can
do things like adequate protein, which is really important anti
inflammatory herbs and nutrients. Also, we want to focus on
gut support and making sure that a person has really
steady like blood sugar regulation and making sure they're not

(09:04):
peaking and spiking in those ways. So, you know, incorporating
some of these basics is really great because those can
be tailored and personalized, but they really form that backbone
to a lot of that recovery nutrition that we're looking for.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Yeah, I like that, so sort of the foundation building
can be somewhat universal and because those needs are so
common across most people, and then you start to individualize
it from there. So with that being said, there are
certain you know, within that foundation, certain herbs, certain nutrients

(09:41):
which are quite often helpful. These are ones that typically
have a good body of evidence to support their use.
And you are quite familiar with this body of evidence
because you've incorporated a lot of these things into the
product that you formulated, which is called nourish Resilience. So
before you go into each thing, and we won't get

(10:02):
through all the ingredients, but before we even take on
some of the ingredients, give us the big picture, like
what is nourish resilience and what is its intended use?

Speaker 3 (10:13):
Oh yes, so nourish resilience is the baby that I created.
It's the result of cancer. But anyways, it's this plant
based nutritional foundational, like this nutritional foundation. You know, as
we talked about this foundation being the backbone, this is
the nutrition foundation designed to support that recovery and resilience

(10:37):
as we mentioned after cancer. So what it does is
it combines all those things that we talked about, all
those really important factors. So it has the protein in there,
it looks at things like medicinal mushrooms that are incorporated
within there, and specific herbs known as these adaptogenic herbs,
and as well as prebiotic fibers, and so those are

(10:57):
all important because they'll provide some of the those daily
nourishments that we need. So the goal of Nourish Resilience,
as far as the big picture item, was to create
something that was you know, convenient, something that has all
everything that we need within there. Important to make it

(11:17):
evidence informed, so that it's all ingredients that have good
backing behind it and something that's really deeply supportive for
all of our thrivers. And so that was really the
idea behind birthing this Nourish resilience.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
Okay, sounds good. So the protein is vegan plant based protein,
and how much protein.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Is there preserving I'll confirm it it's not. So the
protein content isn't as high as you would see in
a protein powder because it's not meant to be as
an entire like protein powder replacement, okay, and so the
protein quantity will be a little bit lower than what
you would typically see. I'm going to say all I

(12:04):
believe and it's sorry. Oh no, it's okay, go on.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
Well, while you're recollecting that, I think that the it's
an important point you just made. This is not a
protein powder, but it does have complex plant protein which
serves sort of a different function, right, So it's very
helpful and important to filling the protein needs. But it
also provides key amino acids, which is one of the

(12:31):
sort of goals of the formula, which is to provide
immune support for example.

Speaker 4 (12:36):
So it's it's it's.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Really more about looking at protein as a source of
medicinal action rather than as a macronutrient.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
Yes, exactly, because we're looking at this as a food
based product. And now when you're looking at the protein itself,
you know, like we mentioned, we've got this like mix
of different proteins. You've got to blend the mung beans
and almonds and pumpkin seed protein and so. And this
is important because protein is really crucial for rebuilding some

(13:09):
of those muscles and bone and immune cells after treatment. Now,
this is an interesting point because many of our thrivers
really struggle to get enough protein. So having something like
a clean plant based option that's really easy to digest
is something that's as key and important mm hmm.

Speaker 4 (13:31):
Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
Okay, So let's talk about some of the other key ingredients.
So one of the things that are that you have
in this formula are medicinal mushrooms. So which ones you
have in there and why are they in.

Speaker 3 (13:43):
Yes, so we included raishi, shitaki, and mitaki, and so
those ones we incorporated specifically because these mushrooms are really
well studied for things like their immune modulating effects, and
so so we know that they're not ones that will
overstimulate a person, but rather they're going to really help

(14:06):
to do things like balancing immune balancing one's immune system
and providing what we're really looking for in that resilience picture,
that antioxidant anti inflammatory support, which are really key and
important for people who are recovering after cancer.

Speaker 4 (14:23):
Very much.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
So everybody I think who goes through even just the
disease of cancer is going to have some residual inflammatory
effects because cancer is an inflammatory condition where it creates
inflammation in the body, and then the treatments themselves are
very inflammatory. So having an anti inflammatory sort of bent,
if you will, to the formula is important, and then

(14:45):
having that immune regulating effect makes a lot of sense.
So you also have some herbs in there. You have
ashwa gander which is also known as Wythania somnifero, which
is the potanical name, and then you also have ginger
in there, So why those two are.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
So it's really interesting. So we picked you know, I
was focusing on some of these herbs because of the
really the components that are important behind them. For example,
ashraganda is known as an adaptogen, right, so it's going
to help our bodies stress response, So it's going to
help our body to adapt to stress as adaptagens do.

(15:22):
So in doing that, it will help to improve energy
and it will also support hormone balancing from that, which
is a nice key perspective without giving the body hormones
or affecting anything in that way. So then you've got
ferment to ginger which is in there as well, and
that helps to reduce inflammation and really support one's digestion,

(15:43):
which after going through cancer journey, especially chemo, is often
compromised after a lot of these treatments. So using those
together that ostroganda and ginger are really helpful in restoring
things like fatigue, restoring vitality, a lot of those key things.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
Mm hmm, Okay, good and these are herbs that will
do this, but not not like drinking a cup of
coffee and getting energized a few minutes later. It's really
more day after day.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
Yeah, yes, exactly. It's more about I usually say it's
you know, your day to day stress responses, so that
you know if someone you know, when you get that
response where someone taps you on the back of your
shoulder and you jump really high. It sort of that
modulating that stress response so you don't have such a
high stress response for it with a small stimuli.

Speaker 4 (16:32):
Mm hmm. Okay.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
So an interesting ingredient in nourish resilience is inulin.

Speaker 4 (16:39):
So tell us a little bit about inulin.

Speaker 3 (16:41):
Yeah, so you know inulin, which is wonderful. It's from
Jerusalem artochoke, which is what we call a prebiotic fiber.
So it does a really great thing because we know
that the gut, you know, we're we're doing all these
conversations around the gut, and the gut being so important
for so many different areas the gut, brain, the gut, liver, gut,

(17:03):
all these things and everything begins in that area. So
using the prebiotic fiber, it feeds the good bacteria or
the beneficial bacteria in the gut because we want to
support them. Because if we support these good fighters known
as the good bacteria, they in turn then will support digestion,

(17:24):
which will also it's not just about you know, having
good poops, it's all about it'll support your immunity and
even your mood potentially as well, because if we have
a good, good gut, we can help to support all
these different areas. Now, the gut health is often disrupted
when you're going through cancer care, so adding some of
that prebiotic fiber was a really important addition that we

(17:46):
wanted to incorporate within there.

Speaker 4 (17:49):
Yeah, yeah, that's great.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
And I think that the more I learn about the microbiome,
the more I realize that although probiotics have their role
to play, and there's certainly a large body of evidence
on the benefit of probiotics, there's also a very critical piece,
which is this prebiotic and I think they lack in
our diet of fermented foods especially and of resistant starches,

(18:16):
which really handicaps our ability to hang on to the
bacteria that are beneficial is a problem. And you know,
we know that chemotherapy, for example, disrupts the microbiome. So
rebuilding a healthy microbiome is so critical, as you say,
to so many different.

Speaker 4 (18:32):
Aspects of our health.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
So I'm really happy to see that you have some
probiotic in this formula. And what about what else, Like
if you were to sort of say that, gosh, there's
some other ingredients that really make this nourish resilience and
you know, kind of distinct or are important to its
overall effect, what other ingredients would you bring up?

Speaker 3 (18:54):
Oh? For sure, So you know we put in some
So I put in some machra. So there's some you know,
macha green tea in there, which you know is one
of the ones that's really good for giving sort of
that gentle energy support that one needs, and it's really
good for antioxidants. So those two things are really great
in supporting one post cancer. Now, other things that are

(19:15):
really nice and which also give it you know, it's
great because it also gives a nice flavor, but it
also serves wonderful medicinal purposes are cinnamon and cardamom. Now
those two are really good for blood sugar balancing, and
so not only are you getting that blood sugar bounce,
but we're also getting this really nice flavor coming out

(19:35):
of the cinnamon and cardamom. Then you've also got clothes
and black human coming in. Now those two ingreds again wonderful,
like these notes of like it's almost like smoky flavor
that you'll get out of it, which is like really
reminiscent of like chry or something. But so these two
are known for their antimicrobial and anti inflammatory support. So

(20:01):
these ingredients are ones that are really wonderful and helping
us support our cancer our cancer patients in that thriver's state,
so that when they're in that remission state. So we
also kept the formula three of things like gluten, dairy,
soy any added sugar so that it is accessible and

(20:23):
it is clean.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
Mm hmm, very good. So how does this taste? How
does nourish resilience taste? And how do you recommend that
people take it?

Speaker 3 (20:32):
Oh? For sure? So, as I mentioned it is, so
I this is something that I would I had made
in my cancer journey as well, and I would drink
in my own recovery. So I had made this for
myself and so and I come from a South Asian background,
so I grew up with you know, waking up to

(20:53):
the smells of my mum making chai downstairs, and so
I would smell all the cardie and clothes and cinnamon
and all these different sense that we're really nourishing and
healing for me. And so I expanded it into something
that can also be used for others. So it has

(21:14):
that sort of chy flavoring to it. So you can
enjoy this either warm if you want it to have
it like a warming latte, or you can have it
cold if you want to make it into more of
a smoothie. So in the you know, a warming latte,
you can use a scoop of the powder of the
nourish resilience powder, heat it up in a plant based

(21:35):
milk like an oat milk or an almond milk, and
if you want to sweeten it a little bit, you
can even add a little teaspoon of honey half a
teaspoon of honey, and then you can frot that up
and stir that up, and then just add a little
bit of cinnamon or coca powder on top if you
want to enjoy it that way, and especially when it's nice,
when it's cold outside, you can have a warming drink. Otherwise,

(21:57):
you can even like I said to support some more
of the nutrients behind it. And if you want to
make it into an entire meal, you can make it
into a smoothie where you can add some more things
to it so you have the nourish resilience as a base,
and then you can add a plant based milk, maybe
like a coconut milk, and add half a frozen banana

(22:17):
to it, some berries, and then for added fats and
fiber and protein, you can add some you can add
some flax seeds or other seeds to it as well
that you may like, and then half a teaspoon of
honey in there as well, and then blend that up
until it's nice and certain creamy, and you can have
that when chilled. So there's two great ways that you

(22:40):
can really you know, those are the two main ways
that I would enjoy it. So those are some of
the ones that I would recommend at least.

Speaker 2 (22:47):
So okay, so let's say you added to a smoothie
in the morning with you know, a variety of other ingredients.
What would you counsel your patients you recommend this too,
or people who are taking this, what would you counsel
them to expect to experience as a result of taking
this on a daily basis and for like how long

(23:12):
will it take?

Speaker 3 (23:13):
Yes, So, like I said, this is going to be
your part of that backbone for your foundation, right, So
this is going to be one of those supportive things
that it's going to help you to establish the nutrition
that you need and help you to establish some of
the backbones to helping you heal and gain more energy.
So because of some of the botanicals when they're I

(23:33):
would give yourself, give yourself three months in order to
start to see some of the benefits of it. Because
whenever we're using nutrients or botanicals, we want to give
it that time. And so give it that space and
continue working with whomever you're working with as well, to
continue to work on your recovery journey, whether it's you know,

(23:56):
physical lifestyle, whether it's you know, whatever care that you're
getting from there as well.

Speaker 4 (24:02):
Mm So three or four months.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
So, I mean, I'm sure since you put a lot
of thought into this formula, you would argue that the
recovery that one would experience taking this daily over three
months would be different than the recovery they would experience
without taking it over that same time period. Because there
will be some recovery that will happen just naturally. So

(24:26):
can you characterize that difference a little bit more energy,
more vitality, better sleep, Like, what are people going to
maybe experience unique to this formula?

Speaker 3 (24:35):
Yes, all the above. So by doing this, you're helping
to increase the energy that you're experiencing, that brain fog,
the fatigue, a lot of those sort of things that
I'm hoping that will help as well as some of
the gut help as well. So making sure that you
do have better bowel movements and making sure that you
know any gas or bloating might be helped in that

(24:55):
regard as well. And I'm hoping that with some of
this blood sugar balance perhaps and improvements and things like
sleep as well, and cravings and all that sort of
stuff too. And really, yeah, so a lot of those
sort of things that I'm really hoping one would gain
out of it.

Speaker 2 (25:12):
And have you found that this formula takes the place
of some capsules that somebody might otherwise supplement their diet with.

Speaker 3 (25:21):
Yes, So again, when you're looking, especially when you're looking
at some of the ones from some of the individual
capsules that one might be looking at from that fiber perspective,
from that botanicals that they may be taking, such as
you know, you know, taking some of the botanicals to
help with brain fog and all those sort of things too.
The idea here is that this could be an all

(25:43):
in one that would taken on a daily basis, would
work synergistically together. So the idea here is that if
you can use this, reduce some of the other supplements
that you're on and focus on taking the nourish resilience.

Speaker 4 (25:58):
Okay, it's good.

Speaker 2 (26:01):
So what other final thoughts would you like to share
with our listeners regarding nourish resilience or just recovery and
resilience in general.

Speaker 3 (26:11):
Yeah, you know what I gave the I was thinking
among this and I would really something that I would
love to say to everybody is remember recovery. I was
a long distance runner for so for a long time,
and I ran during my cancer treatments as well, and
so my some of my analogies go back to that.
So I say here that recovery is a marathon. It's

(26:33):
not a sprint, not by any means. It's a marathon.
So it's about giving your body daily nourishment. Listening to
your needs. And remember you got to celebrate progress along
the way because I really I created this product and
we named it as such because I want thrivers to
feel empowered, not overwhelmed, but empowered. Here you are doing

(26:57):
all this wonderful stuff and give that use this as
part of your celebration of what you're doing.

Speaker 2 (27:03):
Yeah, that's great. I love that you throughout celebration. I
think that you know this is not necessarily a slog
to the finish line. This is really a celebratory experience
and you get rewarded along the way because your recovery
does in fact increase as you move along this journey.

(27:23):
So that's a great word to throw out there.

Speaker 4 (27:28):
Well, this has.

Speaker 2 (27:28):
Been a very informative show, and I'm so happy that
you've introduced Nourish Resilience to the options available for people
