That's great. I keep looking overbecause she's sitting on my right. I
remember it face the camera, Soyeah, usually we're not this kind of
a close proximity of one another,so apologize for that. So Maya,
tell us, how did you firstget involved in climbing. Oh, it
(03:50):
was about four years ago when Iwas leaving in Vancouver, so I saw
just climb Jane calls by my placeand I went there just to trade out
and I'm from right away. Verycool, very cool. So is that
pretty much that simple there? Right? Pretty easy? Yes? Right?
Well? What styles are climbing doyou do? I mean is it mostly
(04:10):
belaying or do you do other stylesas well? Yes? My favorite one
is the laye making when I'm guidingthe route, but I also do mold
beach and bouldering as well. Interestingwith so many places, maya, how
do you select the places you willgo to climb? Well, we have
(04:30):
so many places in here to climbin Brazil, so I try to go
to different places every time. Butit's just sorry, depends on how long
I can stay in there and whichtype of clinbing I want to do.
Very cool. All right, thenwe're going to take a break, but

(06:26):
Camping Show and we're back with ourguest Maya Marzaki here on the Camping Show.
Let's take a look at some footagenow we took we recorded of our
(06:49):
climbing trip to Belahorzante this past weekendHias Play Brazilia. Lady climber explored there
that were doing Oh I got anidea. All right, okay, we
(07:23):
have a friend here that is herfirst time climbing, she said, and
UH ask her just want to know, like does she is this something she
just became interested in or or whatgot her interested in climbing? Good question
about my Megami and confiding I almosta novice from out coin is ma it's
(07:46):
the house maidski I think, sayingthat as faith in Franta French bro say
how much my song is infant? How mad? Since you made I suppose
I think I paide I got avoice, Karl not coming very inferantmates is
(08:18):
processed, so jesus fabio. Heis a lawyer and he has a really
stressful job and he had a reallytough week and he said that he climbs
(08:43):
to like cool down. So let'sask how it works out, uh escalad
multiportanpe you think as you the momentto Kia random Queens class movie mames,
(09:11):
you conceived us his sous millsic youmeans the the naming of the way he's
under the way. So this onelooks cool. So this is generation oh
cool. And then this is thelevel of the climb. Yes, this
six and six is six so ismedium leap level medune for talk. Okay,
(09:46):
Janelle is ascended almost to the toplooking at there. Okay, people
is almost to the top. Yes, so that was an experience. This
is made my second climb ever outsideand this one was a lot steeper with
a straight up in climb, butlots a good hand and foot hold,
(10:07):
which is awesome. Typical to me, when I climb, I get three
quarters of the way up and Iget in my head. And so today
Maya was able to help me getout of my head. It's my Appleachair.
I did that. So it happensonce in a while with everyone.
We get carried and afraid sometimes. So what we need to do when we
(10:31):
are afraid we stop briefing, sowe stop thinking. So when someone is
climbing and get afraid, I justsay, okay, just relax and brief
line touched with yourself and your feelingsand relax a little bit, you know,
put your hands down, and thenwhen you feel ready you can help
climb again. It's just that justabout briefing and then once and then once
(10:56):
I did that, I was ableto focus what was right in front of
me. And by doing that,I just focused on the rock and my
handholds and footholds. And then Igot to and then I looked up and
I was like, this far fromthe top, she's all leading. So
she's leading. Lugious means that she'sthe close person was us reach and she's
(11:20):
setting. So just curious. Doyou see more male climbers than female climbers
(12:03):
and if so, why do youbelieve that is? Oh? Yes,
unfortunately Brazil is a male dominated country, but the numbers of women climbing is
growing and growing and I'm making mybest to make it grow even more.
That's awesome. Well, let meask you a question. What kind of
(12:24):
things can go wrong during a climb? And I'm sure you know the whole
thing is, Yeah, you knowyou can fall and get hurt, But
I mean, what type of thingsreally are the main concern? Oh?
Okay, that's something I do notlike think about. But you need to
be aware of the main concern isfar more than you expect, So you
(12:48):
need to make sure that you areusing the equipments in the right of way,
otherwise things can go really wrong.Have you personally ever been injured during
any of the climbs, and ifso, what happened. Oh? Yes,
Once I was guiding a route andI could not do the last move.
(13:09):
So I was almost at the topand I fall more than I was
expecting. So I kicked my feetagainst the rock and I almost broke it,
but I did not. It waspretty bad, but could be worse,
so it was okay. Yeah,I'm glad, I'm glad you were.
(13:30):
Okay, let's take a look atthe footage of our climbing from last
weekend. Some more footage. He'sdressing up the hardest and it's really important
to make sure that you're putting itright otherwise it doesn't work. And where
(13:50):
is this Okay, So it needsto be on the top of the rifts
because will make sure that if shefalls they I think we'll not fall.
Okay, So on the hip hopfew special climbing shoes. They have micro
(14:13):
grooves to better gripe on the rock, and they shape the food so you
have better footing and climbing. Yeahright, yeah, yeah, okay,
And and there they look very flexible. I'm not sure they are. I
mean this far is flexible, butnot the part of the fingers because it
has to be really really hard. They don't. Okay, so they're not
(14:33):
as they look really flexible, butthey're not quite. They're kind of like
ballet shoes, really really hard balletshoes. Really know they have this special
party. Oh that is very hard. Oh they are, so I would
have known that. Yeah, weusually just put them right before going in
the rock because they heard a lot. You have to use them smaller size.
(14:56):
Oh, so they're they're not ascomfortable and as you would think.
If they're comfortable, you're probably usingyour own sign. Oh. Interesting.
Never would have thought that this isnot a matter climbing, but it could
help you understand. It's something thatyou can take off the rock and you
can put it in, but youcan't hold it very still in your more
call wow. So you have tohave a special off the rock and reach
(15:18):
things more grape right so you don'tfall. Dangerous, but it works dangerous,
but it works very good. Thankyou. In this type of climbing,
the ankles are already in. Butthere's a special type of climbing that
all mobile climbing in which the rockhasn't and if you don't have anything and
you have to take the carabinners,we use a special type of hair binners
(15:41):
that works just like you push andthe smaller and you put your side of
the rock and then it expands, okay, and then you're you're star.
Oh is it like a wedge sortof thing expansion? Which okay, catcha,
I've heard of this. It's notany type of rock that has a
special holes in which you could forthis special gear. Interesting, so you
(16:02):
wouldn't just go climbing any rock, okay, fantastic. He's using a special
color that's made of magnesium. Okay, like a chock. It's quite controversial.
Not everyone uses it. Teotls areusually use it. They sweat a
lot in their hands and it seemsto dry it. There's also a discussion
(16:23):
of week if the magnesium damages therock or not. If it's not.
Oh, this is the controversy.Wonderful, okay. If it's bad for
the rock actually probably in European countries, and don't use it as much as
weak or you use it or thecontroversial for yourself okay. Interesting, you
(16:45):
can have special magnesium bags if youwant, Oh wow, customized why joined
to died? Now she's going withoutthe top rock to look like your own
caravaner and the clip the top rock. Someone will think, so you take
(17:06):
that whole thing with you. No, No, you just take what you
need and you're gonna Okay, that'spretty sharp. M h Yeah. I
can't imagine a lot of bring yourfirst aid caret know you're supposed to be
rough to do this when you wewere just talking about this and I wanted
to I wanted to record this.If you are climbing a wall that that
(17:30):
let's just say, no one hasclimbed before. The process is what you
We're first going to have to takewhat you've got a hammer drill, is
that right? Yeah? You haveto take a lot of special hero the
mobile cabin to fix yourself first. Then you make sure you're very secure and
you have to take a lot ofstuff, the hammery drill, the special
(17:53):
metallic parts that you're going to liveon the rock and everything's very heavy.
You probably have a big backpack, lots of anchors. Those are anchors,
and you would take a tent, would you really? And they're climbing with
a tent yes, you have abackpack with it, and then you just
fix yourself. You never take yourhair asuff. You just place the tent.
It's a special kind of tent, okay. And you sleep on the
(18:15):
rock when everything else you call balwow type of Now are these the platforms
that I see? That lay down? And you just right next to the
rock, And that's okay, Andthat's where you're sleep there And you don't
really want to roll out of bedor fall out of bed there you could
because you have your heart and andAnna will explain for the audience. You
(18:37):
are a translator, a junior translator. That's why your English is so good.
It's like that everyone in Brazil speaksthis fluid of viglish. Right,
have not specialized in climbing language yet? Okay, gotcha? Gotchas are very
good? All right? And thisis our house the famous rock star miamar
(18:57):
Zaki. Wow, climbing seems tobe a real physical activity. That was
great. I love that, ourrockstar Meyer Marzaki, I love it.
Do you do any sort of trainingto stay in shape for climbing? Oh?
(19:18):
Yes, being shaped really important,So I work out almost every day.
I also run twice a week, and I go to indoor bouldering,
uh, indoor climb to be strongerand to pick up the movies. You
don't't ask you question, you knowwhen you say you're at the gym you're
(19:38):
working out, what kind of stuffare you doing? I mean doing are
you doing a lot of arm exercisesor are you doing a lot of leg
or both? I mean and whatmaybe what type of exercise you know,
without going to a lot of detail, but what kind of exercises are you
actually doing there? No, it'sreally important do leg leg it well because
(20:00):
have the legs strong is as importantas having your arms strong. But we
do expecifical workouts because you use expecificalmuscles to climb, mainly for the fingers.
You know. I know that Janellewhen she was climbing, and we're
(20:22):
going to watch this in the videohere a little bit, but she said,
wow, my arms are really tired. And I'm sure as you said,
and there's another piece in there. You talk about that your legs are
doing more work than your arms,But do you ever find that your arms
get like tired like that when you'reclimbing all day more so than your legs
or how does that work? Yes? So actually when you are climbing,
(20:48):
your food body is working and youfeel pent after right anyway, But yes,
you need to pay a patient ofthe movements and always to watch out,
uh where you were going to putyour foot after because it is more
important. Then you just push yourselfin your in your arms, but of
(21:10):
course the fingers and the arms ingeneral gets really sore afterwards. Love that.
I mean, is there about acore like core work that you do
or is that maybe not as importantas your arms and legs? Oh?
Yes, it's like maybe more important. Really, yes, it's really important.
So core. You know, it'sfunny because people thought about core.
(21:33):
Core is is so important in somany things. I can imagine that it
probably would would be climbing as well. Let me ask you what's the highest
what's the highest well distance or whateverthat you've ever climbed? Oh the highest
was about three hundred meters? Whatis not that tall? I want to
(21:56):
try taller higher. So my watchingthe videos, I could really see the
passion for climbing in your eyes. What is it specifically that makes you passionate
about climbing? Oh, such agood question. I kind of spend the
whole evening talking about that. ButI can make it chart. So climb
(22:18):
for me is not just I spart. It's a way of face life,
face problems and kind of titches mehow to be brave, strong and also
how to be hanble. Really,so there's a lot of Basically, what
you're saying is climbing isn't just asport, it's a way of life exactly.
(22:42):
Yeah, I can imagine, andyou know, so I'm just sitting
here thinking. You know, alot of people are probably like, you
know something that climbing looks dangerous, and I'm sure that I'm not alone.
When when I say that, wouldyou say in your opinion, would you
say that climbing is more dangerous oryou know, than others than other sports
(23:07):
or is it actually safer or aboutthe same. What would you say on
that? Well, I see morepeople getting hurt playing soccer than so for
me, climbing is really safe.Of course, it's not that like there
is danger. You know, peopleare afraid of hides and fall. But
(23:27):
you need to make sure that wehave the right equipments and you are using
it why, right, so itbecomes pretty safe. Yeah? Interesting,
Yeah, I would because I thinkeverybody says, wow, there's no way.
I would never do that because wow, it just looks dangerous. You
fall and you can kill yourself. But as we talked about, before you've
(23:51):
got there are a lot of safetydevices and safety measures steps so you take
to make sure that someone doesn't plummettheir you know, their death or their
you know, hospital visit. SoI would you would you agree with that?
Oh for sure. We have lotsof equipment and they will never like
(24:14):
do not work. They always rework, So we need to make sure that
you are doing the right so itis become really safe and all the fun.
So it's really a matter it's theequipment is there. It's really a
matter of the user or the personthat to put that to properly use that
equipment. I would guess, right, yeah, exactly absolutely. It was
(24:34):
so helpful, Maya when you helpedme work through some of my anxiety when
I was three quarters of the wayup at that climb. I understand that
you'll be posting videos that teach peopleabout climbing, So when will you begin
that, Oh A'm you working onthat? So I would say about a
month. Wow, that's pretty that'scoming right up. Yeah, great,
(24:57):
you're right on it. I'll tellyou what. Let's take a look now
at the last parts the two partsof the footage that we captured this weekend
from our climbing trip in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. And this is our host,
the famous rockstar miam Arzaki. Andyou did grab a beer with you
(25:26):
so when you get to the top, you can cheer. Right. The
interesting thing is with my is Ihave seen video lots of photos of her
doing this from my office near Chicago. Now I get to watch her do
this in person. That start thatlooks fun. One of the things we
(25:52):
just talked about, okay, isthe shoes only get are worn on the
turn. We can't on the turnand not on the ground because those little
micro bruce yes Diesel, the microbruse filled upst and and they don't they
don't find well, yes, onething, don't step on the rope.
(26:22):
Is it the dirt? Yes,because that's the problem with the rope.
Okay, look at that. That'stheir their hope, help me, he
come here. So that's the rope. The green one is just to protect,
right, So we have we callthe sofa of the hope, okay,
because that's the uh so if youryour shoes is dirty with dirt and
(26:52):
you step on on the top,the dirty can go inside. Oh sleek
up, and that makes it andover time it makes you. So don't
(27:18):
step on the road. Okay. And we're talking with your name. Okay,
(27:52):
and tell me we're looking right here, we're looking at dis claim here.
Now we're here my just telling youwhat's called the seven seven And this
is a six okay. Now whatmakes this a six as opposed to because
it looks like a pretty flat wall. But what makes it six as opposed
(28:14):
to like a five or four? The difference between the graduations that I have
almost it's how you move your body. So you need to trust your by
trust books that you have in thehands that you have, because it's not
so good like in the four orin the five that you are up like
if you were in the steps.Yeah, because over here we with this
(28:37):
rack over in this way behind here, what we were calling we climbed up.
There was a lot of places.Yeah, it's money you don't have.
This doesn't have that doesn't know itsvery in your mind. When you
see it's not keep here and saytrust that you trust, go up you
(29:04):
do, Maya? Are you doing? Yeah? Yeah? Right? And
you and you've done this before andif you have you done what is the
highest level you've climbed? This forme? Six? And this is today?
You just reached the six for thefirst time. Okay, okay,
(29:33):
that's nicey nice clim Yes, andyou did you tear up your hands?
Oh yeah? Okay. So Ithink a lot of people, like you
were just talking a lot of peoplethink they look at claiming that it's super
difficult and and really what you weresaying is it's not as difficult a lot
(29:55):
of things as it seems. Now. There things that are. But we
were just talking about flexibility. Howimportant is stuff? I think that in
cribing everything is important, you know, like the strength, of course it's
important, and flexibility, the mobility, and I think the principle that the
main thing is the mind, youknow, like get everything cool and everything
calm and relaxed, because when yourmind is not working, well, every
(30:21):
every everything else call apart, youknow. Yeah, Pomal you meet Yoapa
said that too. Cons mintize myemotionalized s to meet that. You know,
I want to watch this so Idon't want to bay. Of course,
(30:44):
cal oh call was his speed incontact all of these you mom,
it was a pass superas is inJesus. If I found nothing could be
about. If I'm come, that'sa better things. Yeah you can s
(31:10):
yea you have the car a verysais this carlage pull I police killed,
Paka sparing size, I come myspirits, calor. Let me think what
says prays this or how you feelto feel good? I'm feeling good,
(32:15):
but I'm nervous and excited. Thisis my first six, and this is
a six. And I struggled alittle bit in my head on the figh
but I made it. And sothis one's pretty much straight up. When
my went up, I saw shehad some difficulty finding some of the handholes.
So a little bit excited and nervousto do this. I don't know
(32:37):
how gonna get started, a mixtureof emotions. Well, good luck with
this. Thank you. What didyou say about the feet and hands?
Again? So when do we startedto climbing, we think that we need
a whole trag the hands and arms. But the most important thing is make
sure that you are thinking in yourfeet and occur o your ploy is the
(33:05):
live. These lives are stronger theirtheir lives, right, Okay, and
she's a That's what I was tryingto tell you to do it life.
(33:52):
Lat'll put your feet against Okay, all right, all right, Mario,
how is the race? Struggle there? A little bit struggle. It was
a struggle on the hand. Iused my hands, stay on the Sorry
I used my hands too much. It's all good though, Okay, good
(34:15):
deal, and she lives. Climbanother day. Okay. Well, here
we are walking back to after along long weekend, weekend, long weekend
of climbing. Am I any closingthoughts here? What do you think?
It's a trip? Fun? Ohyeah, so much fun. People from
(34:35):
Chicago and Canada staring down fun.We are climbed. Yeah, yeah,
that's true. And I didn't falldown, No, I didn't. There
there was no hospital at all,no no ambulance, No snakes, no
snakes I know, right, Iwould like to have seen one just not
biting me. Oh there we go. Yeah. Yeah, some interesting vegetation
(35:00):
along the waker. We got guava, oh yes, lemon trees, lemon
what else? Yeah? So verycool. Little shots of the who's you
called them? Mountains behind us,behind me, what does that mean?
(35:21):
What does that mean? In English? Oh? Boy, it means oh
boys crazy like biga praise. Ohreally interesting, look at that. This
is the rest of the group upthere. They're a little anxious. The
rest of the groups come, yenice, you enjoyed us? All right,
(35:54):
Well that was some fantastic stuff, you know. I Janelle, I
knew you had a blast laying thatwall there. You look too, Yeah,
and we have it. We havea comment up here. Yes,
Marilli, uh says hi, Helloguys, how you doing that? There?
Marielli was with us, one ofthe climbers with us, and she
was she was one of the ladiesthat you saw featured in our video tonight.
(36:17):
So how you doing? Thanks fortiming in with us. That was
so inspirational for me and such anamazing experience. Maya, what advice would
you give anyone that is interested inlearning about climbing? So I would say,
make sure you are learning with someonewho really knows climbing and how to
(36:39):
use the equipment, and never forgettingof having lots of fun. Yeah.
Really, the most important January anythingis just to make sure you're given That's
why you're there, right, Imean, yeah, you got to have
fun, enjoy life, right andwe did have a lot of that.
So all right, then we're goingto take a break, but don't go
