Summer and Winter Never without a Boardwith our special guest Vinnie Dondee. Twenty
seven year old Virginia. Vinnie Dandiegrew up in the mountains of Ortize,
(03:30):
Italy and has been an instructor forthe Ski School Ortiz in Valgardina, Italy
for almost ten years. Most recentlyshe has also become a kiteboard instructor about
a year ago. Vinny started competingat the age of eight and was on
the podium several times in Alto aldijand also at the Italian Championships. In
(03:53):
the later years of her career, she was also competing in the EuroCup event.
Vinnie now indes her time snowboarding inthe Dolomites and kite surfing in the
ft Ventura, Canary Island, Spain. In her own words, my biggest
projects is being able to always livewith a board on my feet without caring
(04:13):
about which season is coming or whereI am. Let's go. I wake
up a little bit of drool onmy fellow, feel like it's gonna be
a bad day. I'm tired ofshit and the coffee ain't hit yet.
Damn, it ain't that great.I don't want to go to work because
my boss is a jerk and I'mnot even that pay. I need a
(04:36):
change in my life because I don'tfeel alive and there's nothing that makes me
happy. Oh hold on, beit for a minute. I'm about to
quit my job, cash in fora ticket. I'm going on a trip
and I don't tend to visit.I'm gonna stay there till I feel like
I'm winning all and this is justthe beginning. I need a big change.
How me feel like I give in? I need a b swing home
runs I'm hitting and I'll never lookback. Moving on to I get it
(04:58):
all ol cat trees we call ondays. But what you can't do for
com go for what you can't be. You could do anything what you can't
do. And with that, welcometo the show, Vinnie. When I
(05:30):
get all, I'm glad to behere. Oh, glad to have you
here. Yeah. Absolutely, youguys, well we are we are we
just going to have Italian guests nowfrom now? I should we just kind
of make that a rule? That'splease? Yeah, my groom forwards are
getting let's do that. Wow,that's can you tell you? Let's do
(05:58):
it, Let's do it. I'llbe lost. You can do yeah.
Absolutely, Hey, I made itthrough. I can't believe I made it
through this without stumbling all over myself. I didn't do as terribly as I
thought. What do you think youwere? Great? Okay, well it
was amazing. Thank you the checksin the mail. Hey, you know
your English is better your sorry, your Italian is better than mine English.
(06:21):
So you do amazing great, wellkids, I'm still working on my English.
So you know it's me to shark. You don't have to ask you
here. You I read it.It's six years old. You were snowboarding,
(06:43):
right, how do you I waslearning how to walk at six.
I'm not making it. I wasthinking about that, Actually, how do
you do that? Isn't that hard? You know, starting so early it
doesn't make it that difficult because youfeel like it's only a game and it's
quite natural for you. And Ialso started skiing when I was only three
(07:04):
years old, so already have abit of confidence with the snow. It
was a nice game. Wow,you know, it just seems like it's
six years old. I couldn't evenhonestly, I was just having I really
wasn't even you know, with Idon't know, I could never do that
at six. That just seems likeincredible. You really didn't try it,
(07:29):
and it's too we can't exactly. No, no, no, that's not
true. You only didn't even tryit. But it's not too difficult.
Yeah you Yeah, for you,you were rock star and you were born.
If you're is no barding in yourshoes. And by the way,
(07:50):
talking about that, when you startedcompetition a competing, sorry, competing is
no bard? Was it a maledominated at the time, you know,
being that young, Yes, that'squite a nice story because I was winning
all the competitions at the beginning, because being an eight years old girl was
(08:13):
meaning I was the only one surfer. Like two years, I was winning
everything, really powerful, the rockStar, Yeah, the first and the
last exactly. Then you know, growing up things get a little bit harder,
but it was nice also that period. Wow, So what is it
(08:37):
attracted you take kate surfing at first? I mean, what was the thing
with you know, you're doing snowboarding, So what attracted you to kite surfing?
That was is kind of a Imean that's kind of a it's not
really that similar or is it it'ssimilar? But you know, I've never
been a sea girl. I've alwaysbeen in the mountain since all my life,
so wasn't really feels so good aboutgoing into the water. Was feeling
(09:01):
like it's cold and tiring and differentfor what I was doing. But my
mom moved here some years ago,and she was always telling me you have
to come here. She was lookingat all these skites in the water and
telling me how I would love todo this and how I could enjoy this.
And then I came here and startedseeing people flying above my head and
(09:22):
I was a Now, maybe I'mliking the sea again and that's how it
started. How cool. Yeah, actually I'm the same page as you because
I am a mountain girl. Sonow it is summer in Brazil and it
is so hot, so I'm notable to climb, So I'm thinking about
(09:43):
considering the water sports as well.So I will let you know. How
are you doing to I would comein Brazil to teach you. No worries,
Okay, we have a plas Iwould love to. Yeah, you
are more than welcome and I willenjoy for sure. Thank you and watch.
(10:07):
An advantage and disadvantage are there tobe in a female instructor. So
the disadvantage, you know, sometimesso it happens that maybe a guy comes
to you and look at you likeyou really know what you're talking about,
but yeah, you're a girl.Maybe they want to smack. Yeah,
(10:31):
but then we make them change idea. But that's not really the big deal.
I think the worst thing about beinga girl in this case it's when
a big guy comes and you haveto pull them up all the time.
That could be tough. Oh wow, But yeah, we also have a
little advantage, like being a girl. Maybe some people would love to have
(10:54):
a girl. They think maybe thereit's nicer with their kids or just funnier,
easy going, so maybe they bookyou a little more. But that's
it, you know, yeah,I you know, I think that's the
whole thing. It seems. Ofcourse women. I understand women being more
comfortable with women, like teaching andthings like that or instructing. I also
(11:18):
think men, yeah, for somereason, Yeah, men don't like to
be led by other men. Idon't know, unless you're playing basketball or
baseball or something. But I justhonestly think that in things, most things
that men would go, yeah,I'd rather have a female. Sometimes this
happens, so sure, Yeah,I feel like that too. My guys
(11:41):
friend like to be around girls becausewe are more fun funnier, we are
more welcome, and as you said, is it going. So yeah,
that's that's something that helps a lot, just for having a little more clients
than someone else. Maybe yeah, good for you, good for you,
(12:05):
too bad, but we are alot of girls. So well. Now,
does mother nature play a role withineither snowboarding or kite surfing? I
mean, is weather and things likethat, is that does that play a
big role? Absolutely? You know, I always say we play with nature,
so we make quite like dangerous ports. And of course if you're only
(12:28):
snowboarding on the slopes, it's nottoo bad. But if you start free
riding and then there are crevices avalanchesto give a look at, and also
kite surfing you have the power ofthe ocean. You can have big obstacles
like rocks to fall on and gustywinds. So I'm trying to teach to
(12:50):
understand also when you can go whenmaybe it's also time to give up sometimes
or how to do it, butto do it safely because we're playing with
mother nature. And yeah, yeah, and mother nature usually wins, doesn't
she if there's a battle, Yeah, exactly, she always waits for or
(13:11):
less. Yeah, she doesn't playa nice game if you don't know how
to mandate. So it's always niceto be aware of the problems and the
things, not the problems, butthe things you can face when you are
doing any outdoors activity. So it'sgood you you talk about that for sure,
(13:33):
Thank you. Yeah. Yeah, well we have a little break,
but don't go away because we willbe right back. Great, wait for
you. A few years ago someoneasked Rudebiggest owner Darren Bush, Hey,
(13:56):
how long have you guys been sellingboats, Darren replied, we don't sell
boats. We sell time on thewater. Of course, that comes in

we are, we are Jackson Kayak, and we are we are Jackson.
We are Jackson kaya Hey, andwe're back with Vinnie Dandie here and outdoors
(16:15):
people. Vinnie, when you werecompeting, what type of what specifically type
of training did you do? Imean when you pumping iron, what were
you doing? Uh? What kindof what kind of workout programs you have?
So like every other sport, ofcourse, a lot of physical preparation,
like the whole summer, and ofcourse a lot a lot of finnite
(16:40):
type on the slopes the whole day, every day, winter and summer,
winter in the Dolomites and summer onthe glaciers, and of course being on
a nice little place in the middleof the mountains. We were never training
on a gym, but like runninginto the boots or doing a balance exercise
(17:03):
from a tree to another with ropesattached to them, like always moving but
always outside like outdoors people. Soreally more cardio than than weightlifting and all
that kind of pump and iron right, there's no yes, you know that.
(17:25):
A lot of mascoles for the legsfor sure, and a lot of
cardio absolutely, wow, special diet. You eat differently when you're competing,
you know, the heavier you are, the faster you go. And snowboarding
show, they were making us trainingand eat and then I also wasn't like
a super eating girl. I waseating just the necessary so they were pushing
(17:48):
me to eat it. Everything wasgood. Wow, Oh my gosh.
Are usually I knew that before orsooner? I love it? Maybe the
cloth zombo yeah, pizzas, icecream, whatever you want, beer yeah
yeah, and some something like that. And I'm traveling for those amazing places.
(18:11):
That's amazing. Oh my gosh. Not too bad, right, And
do you miss that? Do youmiss competing? So for sure, the
the adrenaline even of the competition issomething nice and like competing always like hides
you up, but it's also atough word to be in. And of
(18:33):
course always training and don't do anythingelse than that. It's tough after a
bit, but right now I'm reallyenjoying the thing that I can share my
passion with people and see people growwith the little things I can teach to
them. And this makes me feelquite good enough. Yeah, you seem
(18:56):
like a very down to earth person. But you know, I just I'm
thinking myself. When you don't competelike that, that's just got to be
I mean, that's just got tobe a whole shift in your you know,
just me. You know, no, not like sure no, sure,
of course that you you miss thatYou're used to train every day and
(19:18):
to fight for what you're working. But you know, when I stopped was
a little like feeling a bit offreedom. Finally, it wasn't too bad.
But of course I'm always missing itbecause it was a big part of
my life. Yeah, yeah,I can tell because now you can have
like a regular life, you canhave a social life and do something else
(19:41):
and just training for the competitions andright and now you are kite serving as
well. So yeah, that youare doing well with your time right now.
I don't don't complain. I haveto say I'm quite happy about the
life of you. Do I can'tknow why can you imagine? Yes,
(20:07):
but that's good. I'm glad foryou. It's always nice when we finally
have this spot and thinks that makesus for us and make us happy.
So I'm happy to hear, well, thank you. Yeah, I feel
the same, absolutely, doing whatyou like more than possible. It's the
best thing, of course, yeah, for sure. And what was it
(20:32):
for you when you are winning competitions? That's an easy question. You know,
who doesn't like to win? Whenyou win it, it's a nice,
nice gift for all the sacrifice andtrain you have done, so of
course was nice. Yeah, Idon't know. I mean I never want
(20:56):
something, you know, would you? You go a lot of different places
here snowboarding? And we were talkingabout that well several weeks ago. But
where do you all travel to tosnowboard? You a lot of places.
So the reality is that I'm reallysorry. I'm super grateful for the place
(21:22):
I live in because I'm snowboarding inand on ESCO Heritage place, so it's
quite the most wonderful place you cansnowboard, more or less. And as
we said before, before I wasonly competing and now I'm working a lot,
so I'm never traveling for snowboarding. But I have some dream spots for
(21:44):
sure. Would love to go inColorado where it's full of snow, or
in Japan where it's way more fullof snow La Ponia. You know,
there are a lot of places I'mtrying to go when I will like stop
working A lot like it. Andit makes me feel jealous actually, because
(22:04):
we need to travel where you liveto enjoy snow and you just having there,
and you you had the opportunity, opportunity of growing up in those amazing
places in Italy. That's that's veryamazing. And you know, I'm dreaming
about Brazil now. So we're neverhappy with what we have looking switch.
(22:30):
If we spent six months here andI spent in your place six months and
we keep switching, I would putmy sign on this absolutely sure, okay
deal And I have have you everhad any snowboarding or kite surfing accidents?
(22:56):
I lost the account of how many. I don't even know where to start.
I made snowboarding, I did ahead trauma, I broke a wrist,
I broke both of my knees,I think three fingers, A lot
(23:18):
of things. Yeah, wow, this is what it comes to my mind
now and then tiding. I hada really bad accident falling on the rocks
and cut a lot of parts ofmy body, like a big thing on
my hand. Are like twelve pointson my hand? Wow? So yeah,
it's part of the game, youknow, making dangerous things. Let
(23:41):
these things happen. Also, sometimeswhen you broke three fingers, did you
break them all the same time oris that just wo only the same time?
Yeah? I was beating on islalomand I took a pull really hard
on my hand and that's what happenedmost. Did you cry? I think
(24:03):
I would six three figures? Man, Wow, that was the easiest one.
Yeah, And it depends what handit's on. You know, it's
your toothbrush in hand, that wouldbe hard. And yeah, you know
that's a question. You already knowthe answer, of course, was my
(24:23):
right. Of course, yes,of course, it would make a lot
of things difficult. I'm sure youknow, I mean, yeah, oh
my gosh, prepared, We allknow that something like this could happen,
so yeah, for sure. Yeah, that's why you can't call you a
rockstar, because you were tough, and that's impressive. Are always breaking myself?
(24:52):
It's amazing, just another day, right, Well, we have some
pictures to look it up, butafter they break, so don't go away.
We will bring right back. Afew years ago, someone asked Rudebega's

We've got some photos here that VinnieSennis. Let's have you put those
up and we'll take a look atthose. We could not have her tell
us a little bit about what we'relooking at here, Vinnie. This was
one of my first border cross Ithink my first competition jumping and with people
on my back pushing me, andyeah, I was quite young. You
(28:03):
can see it also from the goodquality of this picture. That's a cool
photo, honest. And by theway, I'm sorry, go ahead,
no, no, it was makingme laugh a lot. That's why I
sent it to you because so bythe way, the video you you send
(28:26):
just amazing, amazing, very cool. I tried to do my best.
You did, Thank you, Thankyou. I love this picture. This
is so cool man. And youknow this is the classic Kate surfing telling
you it just looks good. Ichose this picture just because it's my home
(28:47):
spot now here. This is BlackBeach here in for Teventura with these crystal
view waters that I was thinking isamazing. It is beautiful place. Fling
shot. That's uh, that's oneof your sponsors, right. This is
me working. There's my my skiski school suits. Yeah, beautiful.
(29:17):
Thank you. Those suits look alittle bulky, I mean, are they
Are they bulky? Or they prettymuch easy to move maneuver around in those
things? They look like a carheart. You know that's true that you
don't know how many things I havein my pockets. I think these jacket
and pants have like fifteen pockets orsomething. And you put your whole life
in them, your whole life.I'm sure there's a cell phone in there.
(29:44):
Somewhere too. Right, that's everythingyou can even imagine. I have
food and all my things, andyou know we are living on the ski
lift, and on the ski liftyou do everything. You watch your phone,
you eat, you drink, andthat's time. How you can wow.
No, I would never have guessedthat. I mean, but it
does look like it holds a lotof stuff. I mean, but it
(30:07):
looks like bulky. It looks likeit reminds me of the car hurts.
Wait, I watch fifteen kilograms morethan my normal weight, so that's heavy.
Actually it's a big, big hold. People get shocked when they left
my jacket. How much does thatthink? Way? I don't know actually,
(30:33):
but I don't want to know thatbecause if not, I have to
start living things at home and Idon't want that. It's no, it's
it's like the normal bag of awoman, but without a bag. That's
a lot. That's yeah. Right, there was a nice explanation. Yeah,
(30:55):
here we go. Oh wow, this is when my becomes amazing.
And it doesn't happen a lot,but sometimes you have some nice days like
this when you can go with thehelicopter around the mountains and see the dolomites,
really from near and these are rareamazing days. So okay, so
(31:19):
you're in the chop right here. What are you looking for? What do
you what are you checking out? What are you scoping out? No,
in reality, I was going homein this moment. This is like the
end of the trip. You willnormally start up to the mountains, they
catch you, make you do anice round around the mountains, and then
of course you can choose if youwant to continue to ski or if you
(31:42):
want to go around or just gohome. But in this case, I
had a really nice client who lovesgoing in a helicopter. I think this
was the second one of the days, so we were just going home.
Yeah, whoa, that's amazing. It does look fun though, Oh it's
nice. Yeah. I can imagineit like flying on the top of the
(32:07):
dollmites. That's crazy, it's beautiful. It doesn't happen a lot, but
when it happens, it's like areal big gift. You can. I
think, when you're a rock star, this is kind of just another day
at the office, right like youNo, no, no, it's not
true. Also for rock stars likeme, this is another little little Vinnie
(32:38):
competing. This is a part ofthe This is like almost another sport of
the one we saw before. Thisis like a different competition, the batlalam
with a total different board. Thisis hard if you you can see the
(32:59):
really good because of the old qualityof the picture. But the boots are
almost like the sky ones and it'slike totally another sport. Manny, all
I know is you have to beflying there because at that angle, if
you're not flying, you're gonna fallover. But I have wings, I
tell you. It's all the balanceand the training for the mascots of my
(33:29):
legs that we did before. Youknow, sure, well this is my
office. A nice view from youroffice, Thenny, I must say,
yeah, you can see on theleft the ski lift I was thinking about
before. And yeah, that's allI give you this picture because that's what
(33:50):
I see every day of my lifemore or less. You know, this
is a part of what makes meleave the sea and go back to the
mountains every winter. How what isthat fog down there or what is that?
It's fun? Yeah, like cloudsgoing really really low and like this
was a nice day because of coursewhen it's blue like this and it opens
(34:14):
and then the sun comes out butI think this was a nice weird moment
of the day. That's a coolpicture. Yeah cool, Yeah, that's
so impressive. I mean I've neverbeen in Italy, and I saw many
pictures, of course, and Iknow how beautiful it is. But ever
everwhere it's just beautiful in different alwaysat the mountains are amazing, the beaches
(34:37):
are amazing. Just like, yeah, that's true. We are really place,
just a place. It's like superlittle but full of everything. Yeah,
that's so cool. This is thefood training I was talking before.
(34:57):
No, no gim at all.Like wait, that was being shared from
everyone and yeah, you have thebarbell in your back. Is that you?
Yes, exactly, that's me.Wow that little legs. I love
it. We do what we could. How cool? Yeah like that.
(35:28):
Oh oh that's my first knee surgery. This is a hospital that's not good.
No, not at all. Wow, I think I was. I
know. This is the second surgeryI think I did because it's my left
me. Yeah, that's the secondone. I wasn't that young because the
first one I did it at fourteenyears old. Whoa. You know you
(35:52):
have to be extremely tough, Imean really, and you just keep going
back from more. I love it. That's cool. Is that because you're
Italian or because you're just a rockstar or what is that? I think
I'm only missing some brain parts likethat, some mental problems, you know.
(36:16):
I love it. If you will, I would say that it is
the three options in the same time. You were a rock star, and
you were tough because you were Italian, and you were a little bit crazy.
But our rockstars are crazy, soit is a good thing. Thank
(36:36):
you guys for making compliments. Butwow, nice, you know, well
deserve I mean, I just thinkthat's cool. You've been to the hospital
before, and you know when you'regoing there, it's never a good thing.
But I can tell you unless maybeyou're having a baby. But it
doesn't look like that's what you're doinghere. No, I'm not even thinking
about that, man. I mean, you know, sometimes you get into
(36:58):
rec bed enough or whatever. Whiteyou're going, Okay, I've had enough.
Thank you, I got your youknow, I know what you're trying
to do. Got here, I'mdone, you know it? Oh again,
another boo boo. I can seethem. Then there's several Look at
this, that's a kite of booboo. That the rock accident where I
(37:21):
got more or less though myself.I have to things. I see band
aids on your toes also smokes,Oh my gosh, it's a good eye.
We never have to miss something, man, you I do it,
I do it right. You know, if it's worth doing, it's worth
(37:44):
doing right right exactly. If not, why are you doing it exactly?
What? What does your mother thinkabout that? Oh? Poor poor You
know, some some days ago Icut my feet and this is something normal
that happens here in for theventur thatit's all rocky and you're cutting and going
(38:06):
out and in or out of thewater, and you cut your feet.
And she told me this time,I didn't even want to see what you
did. Don't show me. She'sso sick of us. Also, my
brother, he was breaking himself alot, was doing in duro and motocross.
So she had a tough life withus, always sweeting and doing the
(38:29):
nurse. So she's done with that. I think, oh my gosh,
poor, I can feel more sorrythan this, Like she is the reason
why I give a look at whereI am and what I look, and
I think maybe ten seconds more thanwhat I would have done normally, because
(38:51):
poor poor mom, you know, yeah, wow, think about her,
not about you. I try andtry. Wow. This is my favorite
part of snowboarding, for sure. It's free riding. To arrive over there,
we walk a lot because of coursethere are no chair lifts to arrive
(39:15):
in places like that. And that'sbeautiful. I think, yeah, well
this is bald. It's a beautifulrunning like line that you can do in
the Dolomites. But you have towalk, walk a lot to arrive over
there, and then pray, no, it's not true. No, walking
(39:37):
through snow is not that easy sometimes. I mean, it takes a lot
to you know what I mean?Of course you do, you know exactly
now. I love going down That'sthe only reason why I walk. Yeah,
how fast you let me ask youthis, well, how fast do
you get going? And I knowyou're going to give me kilometers proud,
But how fast do you go whenyou get down some of these these mountains?
(40:01):
You know, I can't tell youexactly how, but a lot I
can imagine the most. You canthe most you can for sure, And
being an extructor makes you understand howimportant and long five minutes are and you
have to use them all we arealways running from one place to another.
(40:22):
So when we do only one loopfor ourselves, we are running, you
know something. That's how you endup at the hospital with band aids on
your toes and flaps. Yeah.Yeah, oh my god, exactly.
I would love to save myself. But you're right, one on each limb.
(40:42):
I'm just like, wow, buthow fast do you go? Like?
How does this speech? Like?Thirty kilometers? Like how how fast
it is going? Yeah, that'swhat I was asking her. I don't
know, but she doesn't know.Yeah, it could be something like thirty
five, forty I know. Ithink I normally arrive around forty kilometers or
(41:05):
something like that when it's quite windyand so snowboarding maybe less for sure,
because you don't have nothing that pullsyou so hard. But something around thirty
thirty five for sure. Oh mygosh, that's fast, of course when
you're in rush. Yeah. Thisis another of the beautiful free rides we
(41:30):
have over there. And you canalso see on the right of you don't
see it a lot in this picture, but you can see there is a
little piece of snow going down andthat's the beginning of a little avalanche.
And wow, but of course, who cares. Let's jump on that.
(41:52):
Why not a lot of your moneyaround your only joking? Normally it now
because if it already came down,it's normally because or it's already safe.
You know what, what fall downnormally it doesn't have to fall again.
(42:12):
Yeah, true, all right,m hmm, there you go the best
part, and yeah, thank youfor sharing. And the one million question
where can people find you? Onsocial media? You can for sure find
me on Instagram that's n you cansee it over there, and on my
(42:38):
skill School website where you can booklessons with me and all the other beautiful
instructors we have, and of courseon Facebook like Virginia and they like you
said there, Yeah that's Vinnie.Vinnie k is a k s h right
Vae k s h. Interesting,Yeah, that's not cool. The thank
