Maya Marzaki, good evening. It'sWednesday, June twenty eight, twenty twenty
(00:52):
three. We've got a eighty twoI should say am eighty two fahrenheit every
day here in north central Illinois thatweek equates to twenty eight degrees celsius.
And uh I here, Maya felloff, and I go on that she
fell but you're backwards, so goodfor your very very good, thank you.
(01:15):
I'm sorry about that. Well that'sall right, Well just this one
time, you know, eighty twodegrees eighty two degrees fahrenheit twenty eight celsius.
Maya, what do you get downhere in some Paulo, Brazil.
Yeah, so we have some internartedshoes and also it is twenty two degrees
cel shoes and means for you guysUnited States, seven one seven one degrees
(01:38):
Fahrenheit's a lobally warm day of winter. Here in Brazil. It is how
winters feels for us. I'll tellyou what. You know what, I
it's it's eighty two outside, butright now it feels like it's one hundred
and eighty two in your studio.I think I'm going through menopause. Man.
I mean it's like hotter than Helendreand like it's the air. I
(02:00):
don't get it. I don't getum. This morning I woke up like
that too, and then I wentoutside and uh breed all that fresh wood
smoke, Canadian polluted air that's goingto thanks guys, appreciate it. That's
terrible. You should move to Brazil. Yeah, you know what? More
(02:20):
of this and uh yeah, equipmentand internet problems here. I might just
ninety three degrees in South Florida, but humidity makes it feel like one hundred
and three. You know. Ijust saw the news today one hundred and
fifteen degrees in like and it wasDallas, Texas. And that's a heat
factor, that is the actual temperature. So, um, I bet everybody
(02:40):
feels like they're going through menopause there. It's just bad. It's like that's
yeah, it is too much. That's dangerous. It is too much.
Yeah, there's just not enough beer. Maya never. There is not enough
beer when we are together. Thatthere is that our secrets. Really,
Hey, I can tell you.You gotta tell everybody. So right now,
(03:04):
our video engineer, Bruno is workingon minimon as I say his name
right, minim minimon medium one,Yeah, I guess so, yeah,
he's working on our video for nextweek. So my and it was just
telling people on faceboight a live thinghere before the show. Um, we're
gonna do you and I are gonnado a show next week or an episode
(03:27):
with all our footage from your triphere to the United States. And we
did all kinds of stuff. Wedid paddling, and we did some four
wheeling and a little bit drinking andwent to Chicago and went Chicago and that
was fun. That was really reallyfun. Visited the Bean and all kinds
of neat things. So we're gonnashow all that next week, and I
(03:50):
had six minutes so far. Isaid, said, Bruno, we're gonna
need a little bit more than that, so you might want to put those
boring things in there that we had. He's no Barbara with us. Okay,
it was all that bad, butwe'll put it. We're gonna have
it put in there. We'll seeif people read sell us it sucked and
we will do that. Yeah, but that's going to be fun. And
(04:13):
I'm looking for her for this show. Yeah, me too, Me too,
so absolutely well. Tonight's episode ofOutdoors People is brought to you by
Rudabaga Paddle Sports, providing time onthe water, by KEM Ground Views making
campaign easier, by the luth Packmade in the USA since eighteen eighty two,
and by Jackson Kayak persu we enjoythorough paddo Sports. Tonight's episode is
(04:38):
the UTMB goes to Brazil with ourspecial guest, Nato Concon, thirty five
year old economics and business administration professionalin San Paulo, Brazil. Nato Concon
is also an amateur athlete who enjoysclimbing, mountaineering, adventure racing and trail
running. In fact, He's climbedsix peaks or five thousand meters, participated
(05:01):
in over ten expedition adventure races, and has completed two ultra marathon races.
In twenty twenty, Nato co foundedthe organization Poto Dy Brazil by Ultra Trail
Dumont Blanc. Let me say thatagain, Uh, Potocky, I think
it's maybe it's Potocky. I'm gonnatry to pot thank you, thank you.
(05:24):
We did before the show and I'mstill scared. Podocy Brazil by Ultratrail
Dumont Blanc or the UTMB. Theorganization has put a great deal of effort
toward bringing the UTMB competitions to Brazilin twenty twenty three, and as a
result of their hard work, thePodocy Brazil by UTMB is proud to announce
that, for the first time, the competitions will take place in Rio de
(05:46):
Janeiro, Brazil, this September, and that Welcome to the show, Nao,
Hi, Welcome to night people. How are you doing? How was
yours your weather down there? Wealready asked Maya that, but you're you're
not exactly in the same place asmine, are you? If you are
going her camera and say, hi, I want to see we are about
(06:10):
one hundred kilometers away from each other. Oh wow, So here I'm in
San Paulo right now, and hereis just a normal winter evening. It's
around seventy fining heights degrees. Okay, leave really low humidity, really dry
(06:31):
weather. Yes, the winter isreally dry. Yeah, because you're in
the city, right, You're inthe city of sam Paulo. You're in
the city of somehol Yeah, okay, I'm in the city. Yeah.
Mine is in a medicana, whichis some Polo states, but not in
the some Polo city. So you'reabout the distance from Chicago meet to Chicago
from each other. Yes, kindof off, you are, right,
(06:53):
che Well, we are so excitedto have you here. I guess it
is the first Brazilian guy to beinterviewed. I was a first Brazilian girl
to be interviewed before become a cohost. So it's really excited and I'm
really excited to talk about the UTMBbecause it's the first time it's going to
(07:14):
happen in Brazil. So thank youfor being here with us, and let's
have you explain what exactly it isUTMB and utemy be officially get started.
Okay. So utemy B is thefar letters for Ultra Trail Dumont Blunt,
(07:38):
which is the one of the mostdesirable trail running competition. It is placed
every year in August in Chamoni,France, and it starts exactly twenty years
ago when Michelle Politi, the founderhe desired to to re should built a
(08:01):
trail run competition that should go aroundall the Thembla massif so it's it was
one hundred miles cars and in thefirst edition he got some some athletes and
it was where all the dream started. Oh yes, that's nice. So
(08:26):
let me ask in what countries havethe UTMB competitions taken place so far?
Okay, so now that they builtthe UTBB World Series with h they are
building some some races in a lotof countries. We got some race in
(08:46):
America, Europe, Africa, Asiaand Oceania. Uh. In in America
we got Brazil, ragin China,United States, Meshico. In Europe,
um Spain, Croatia, France.Uh maybe I forgot some. In Africa,
(09:09):
there is in South Africa. Thereare also some racing in Australia.
There are races in China, SouthKorea and a lot of places. Wow,
yeah, yeah, yeah, veryit sounds like it's immensely popular though
(09:31):
all those places. Yeah, it'sone of the most desirable UH trail already
in the world. Like uh,in Chamoni, France, which we call
the finals, they join around tenthousand peoples each August for the event.
(09:52):
Oh, yes, that's something else. And how many individual races are involved
in eut mbf end. So thereare thirty six events around the world and
each event uh depends from the fromevent from from an event. For example,
(10:16):
in Chamoni, France, there areseven courses, seven competitions. In
Brazil these in the first edition,Bia going to have far competitions. In
Argentina there was seven competitions. Soit depends from country to country, from
from race to race. Interesting,so let me ask you how many participants
(10:39):
actually take part in the event, and you know, what is the actually
age range that these participants are?Okay, so uh here in Brazil,
the number of the athletes we wedidn't announce it yet, but we are
getting closed through five thousand athletes WHOAwe have fire corses and business are really
(11:09):
also achievement for Brazil. If youcompare with other trail running running events here
in Brazil, So we are reallyproud of what we are building. And
on the other hand, this meansthat we must have a We got a
really huge responsibility with all these runnersin in Brazil, around eighty percent of
(11:39):
Brazilian runners and to any percent frompeople from abroad. Okay, the average
eight is around for five years old, and they go from eighteen years old
until seventy eighty years old. Areyou kidding me? Yeah? First of
all, five wasn't just blew meaway? That's first thing. Um,
(12:03):
And as I said, where thehell do you put all these people?
But moment when you said right, think about there. But uh so,
only twenty percent of the people twentypercent of the five thousand people. By
the way, um, don't makeme do math. Anyway, those people
are the ones that are coming fromother countries, so it's not much Where
(12:26):
the hell do you put those people? I mean, that's still a lot
of people. The hotels are goingto be jammed full of people when you're
doing this. We got around thirtydifferent countries so far. As it's something
that makes us really proud to tohave all those people, and we do
(12:48):
like to to share with them allall the values to to make them have
a really awesome experiencing the jungle,to to visit the landscape, visit our
mountains, enjoy the atmosphere. Sowe are really exciting about building these events.
Well think I want to ask you, is this you know seventy years
(13:11):
old? These people are seven yearsold, are running through the jungle,
they are which marathon? That's crazy? Yeah? And any other thing is
these people all that they come there? Did they speak Portuguese? I mean,
because they have to understand what's goingon? Do they know? How
do they bring translators with them?I don't know. We understand that we
(13:35):
are an international event, so theystuff they will need to speak at least
another language. So we are makinga mix between English and Spanish because most
of the people from abroad, didthey come from Latin America? Okay,
(13:56):
so, but reasonable number of peoplethat only speak English. So we need
to take about these and most ofthe Brazilian population from the countryside, especially
in the jungle, in the smallvillage, they just speak Portuguese. But
(14:20):
they will love to receive people fromabroad. They will they will invite them
to visit their homes. They willshare food, they will share bears,
They if people, they will bemore than welcome here in Brazil. I
to tell you something, and thisdoesn't say much for where I'm at.
I mean, I'm not gonna nameanything, but I'm gonna tell you something
(14:41):
when I when when I was inBrazil, and Janelle and I were both
what my other co hosts were inBrazil. You guys are so welcoming,
so accommodating and very nice. Ican't say enough nice things about Brazil and
my visitor. I mean there therewas no one, I mean not even
(15:01):
in the airport. And if you'regonna get somebody that's rude, it's going
to be an airport. And everybodythere was so nice. I remember we
were another airport in Belajazante. Nobodyspoke English. I mean they're one person
spoke English. I'm like, okay, I feel like now I know it
would be like if I were travelingalone. That's one of my worst nightmare
is like, oh my god,Um, you can't sign language. What
(15:24):
flight am I on? You know, at least I can't, But um,
everybody was so nice down there, and that's that's important if you're going
to host a big event like thisis to everyone to feel welcome. I
would think, you know, yes, there is something really important, and
we know that all Brazilians. Theythey will give not only foreigners but all
(15:48):
Brazilians from other states, and theywill give a really warm hospitality for those
who will enjoy. And tried thismoment before, I think, oh yes,
I mean I'm in Brazilian, soof course I am going to say
good stuff about us. But weare really welcome and warm people in general.
(16:12):
So it's being really nice have abig competition like UT and being here
because I am sure everyone who aregoing to come from another country is going
to be more than welcome and havea good time. And also the place
you guys choose just the best,so beautiful, so beautiful, so come
(16:37):
and enjoy and have a really goodtime in here Rio. Yeah, that's
like that RaSE. Oh my gosh, I spend my New Years in the
place that the UTI maybe is goingto happen, and I am just in
love about the place. Really goodchoice. Yeah. But anyway, what's
(17:02):
short of training do athletes do toprepare for these races? So that's a
nice question because it's a long attime doing those in physical way for us,
So people will need to have anice endurance. So what I always
(17:25):
say, so just make a disclaimer. I'm not I'm not a trainer.
I'm I'm a athlete. So mytrains I mixed about vodoys training where I
try to put a really high intensityin a short amount of time and do
it in some intervals. I willalso do some endurance training where I go
(17:49):
to mountains to trail and spend likefive six hours running and going for the
upper hills for high elevation gained areas. And I also try to do some
some other events where I would liketo should go for my best time and
(18:11):
try to do the corse as fastas I can instead of just staying in
doing effort for a long time.So that's what I mix for. And
I think people who would like tomove to a ultra trail they should have
(18:33):
a mix of something like this, but I highly recommend them to to look
for a trainer. So it's prettymuch training everything you can as much as
you're possible about running. Yeah, that's about it, but it's not it's
not just running. There is apart that is mental because you need to
(18:59):
know yourself how your body behaviors duringthe night. So if you spend all
day running and you will go throughall night running as well, So how
how will your body react you toif sleep deprivation? About carrying all the
(19:21):
stuff the mindatary gears that you needto to bring with you. So you
need to know yourself to and howyour your body will behavior on those situations
and learn how to react, howto correct anything that's going wrong during the
race. So you have to havea therapy and a personal trainer. Kind
(19:48):
off, No, I'm kidding,Um, yes, I guess all those
parts. You need to understand howyour body behaves and how you control.
You're a mind right, so it'snot easy for athletes in general. But
we are going to all leader breakdon't go away. We will be back
(20:10):
with Mark after these messages. Afew years ago, someone asked Rudebega's owner,
Darren Bush, Hey, how longhave you guys been selling boats?
Darren replied, well, we don'tsell boats. We sell time on the
(20:33):
water. Of course, that comesin all types. We help people paddle
more safely with ruetebeg outdoor programs. We rent canoes, kayaks, and stand
up paddle boards. We sell andinstall racks to get you from home to
adventure. Rudebega's got everything you needto get you out on the water like
paddles, life jackets, dry bagsand clothing. Rudebaga Paddle Sports on the

online at duluthpac dot com. Weare one big family, a community of
tattlers, and we want to makesure that everyone has a great time out
on the water. We are maderight here in part of Tennessee, USA.
(22:21):
This is wherever Jackson Kayak is born. Built by hands with a focus
on innovation. We are Jackson Kayak. We are we are, we are
Jackson Kayak. We are, weare were Jackson Kak. We agree,
we are Jackson Kayak and we areback with Neat to Hong Kong. Neat
(22:49):
to tell us about the location inBrazil where Vizier's UTMD competitions will take place
and also what type of comes runnerswill have to endure. Okay, so
that's my favorite question. I lovetalk about Parachi, uh, And what
(23:11):
makes me more in love about aboutParachi is because before the UTEMI be Brazil,
Parachi wasn't considered as a trail runningdestination, at least for Brazilians.
When we used to talk about Parachi, we we were talking about the beaches,
(23:34):
the seaside, so it was aboating destinations of fishing destinations and not
outdoor sports destinations. If we talkabout trails or hikings and choosing a beautiful
place to host a UTIMB event inBrazil, I think it was the most
(23:59):
challenge uh task that we we gotbecause in Brazil, the a lot of
beautiful places, a lot of amazingplace to host the trail running event.
So when we decide about Parachi,we were looking through a lot of aspects.
For example, when that we lookfor is uh the number of hotel
(24:26):
accommodations, because we were not lookingjust for the first year. We are
considering all they event grow, soUH is they they even going through to
grow. They have an infrastructure forfor uh this grow. So this was
(24:48):
one point. We also look fora really place where we understand that trail
runners they bring their their family, they bring the children's so they would like
to spare a really good moment withtheir family. And Parachi there is a
lot of attractions. There is alot of things to do besides the race,
(25:11):
and trail running is um it's amore complex even then a road race,
so people will need to travel. They will spend four or five days
on the destination. So the destinationmust must to be appealing. And Parachi
(25:32):
it's amazing place where people have goodrestaurants, good local food to try.
We also like to join the historicalaspect about the city because Parachi has a
really amazing It was a really importantpart of our history. When we have
(25:56):
the Brazilian gold Rush, a Parachiwas the place where the gold left Brazil
and went to to part to goso We got a lot of historical aspect
in the city. We have ahistoric city center. We have a really
nice place where you can see howthings work in Brazil in the past,
(26:21):
the architecture, the buildings, howthe city was designed. So this is
something that we like a lot andwe do like to to show for the
runners and also the landscape, theutimosphere, the landscape, the views in
the cars. It's brief taking. So people will go, they will run
(26:45):
in the in the sand, andthen they will climb a two thousand meters
mountain and they will see the seafront above. So that's that's amazing things
that we try to to concede andmake a course that is challenged. But
it's not all the time inside thejangle, not all the time on the
(27:08):
same not all the time on themountains. So we try to mix and
let the athletes have a nice amountof time in each of the environments.
Oh yeah, I need to tellyou, like congratulations for the place you
(27:30):
guys choose, because it is anamazing place as a city, as as
a natural stuff. We have lotsof bars, good restaurants, nights,
beaches. It is just an amazingplace. Yes, Like there is no
enough words to describe how beautiful itis the place, so people do not
(27:52):
besout utmb In Brazil, we sayeach other that everyone that goes to parachieve
they look to the sea. Soall attention was focused on the seat and
now we are moving the attention attentionback to the mountains and people are scovering
(28:12):
like the last seven percent of thethe Atani forest said that it remains,
so it's a it's a area thatwe need to take care about and we
really think that they bring the eventto this area, to this environment will
(28:33):
help to keep the remaining forest life. Yeah, such such a good choice.
And how did you go about choosingthe location and how type of challenge
you face deciding on the location. So you you kind of said, right,
you need to accommodation the whole familyand needs to follow the competition and
(29:00):
uh orders right, So can canyou tell more about that? Was really
challenged because we got a list aboutfifty possible locations and we try to describe
the locations, but we know thatwe have descried a lot of beautiful places.
(29:23):
Yeah, and we we went toParachi it was doing the pandemic because
we were we were trying like weconsider all the infrastructure aspect, but the
cars needs to exist, so weneed to open some trails to encounter some
(29:48):
trails to make h to do allthe trails, to connect the trails to
come up with a full cars.So this was the most childing because like
we can have a really nice CDwith a beautiful landscape, but the trails
(30:10):
are not so nice. So butwe have really nice place with awesome trails,
but the CD want support all allthe guests. So that's what we
try to shoot the side. Butwe know that we once that we said
they as true but achieve we unfortunatelysaid no for an amazing place as well.
(30:34):
That's very cool. That's there's alot goes into there, I'm sure
obviously. Well listen, we comeback. We're gonna take a look at
some photos and a couple of videoshere that natal centers, So take a
little break, will be right backafter these messages. A few years ago

(33:21):
we let's take a look at somephotos and video that he sent us,
and uh we'll go from there.Just take a look at the clock for
running a few minutes behind you.You might run through these a little quicker
than normal. Yes, it isnever enough to talk about Brazie FIRMI I
am so in love about my contrast. Look at this, Terraine. This
is killing me. Wow, thisis dangerous. Man. Imagine you're knee
(33:46):
running in there. Yeah, andI'm thinking that in wild snakes. You
know what I'm saying. Poisonous kindWow, Now where's that? Where's that?
That's what country? Is this?It die? Presume it's just it's
(34:07):
just uh, this is in Brazil. Yeah, this is just three kilometers
near near the city. Okay, interesting, it's around three kilometers from from
the Patachi Sea. Centered beautiful,It's amazing. There will be a lot
(34:30):
of river crossing during the no boatsthough you can't strap a boat on your
back right. Unfortunately, we arenot going to kayaking on those rivers.
But it's really awesome experience. Butduring the car the cars that we need
to cross a lot of rivers. It's a drink about water, so we'll
(34:57):
have a full nature experience. Itis over there, very good, that's
amazing. But the runners will needsome extra socks. Yes, that's uh
uh small upheal. It's a littlebit far from the city. But uh,
(35:17):
once that you finish is amazing.View, very cool. That's one
of the most iconic pictures that wewe got. We call this is a
tropical fiard. Uh in technically isnot a fiyard, but we call because
(35:38):
it's so similar that that a feyard, So we call a tropical yard.
And um, it is s right, it's beautiful there. I did lots
of hikes in there. I loveit. So that's that's my partner,
(35:58):
the founder of the the event.Half up and so he went to the
trail as well. He's the guythat leads all the teams that just looks
hot. Yeah, I'm glad thathuman. Yeah, yeah, I think
(36:20):
they humanity would be the main problemfor the years because it's really high.
So you feel really sweat, youlose a lot of so people you need
to take care about the irritation. But it's beautiful though, you know.
Yeah, it's amazing. It's realjungle. He's a cocon tree. What
is that? No, it's apalm tree. I'm sorry, that's yeah,
(36:43):
but there are plenty of coconuts, coconuts over there there, there's a
plenty of palms, exactly. Loveabout this. You can get free lunch
anywhere along the trails. Yeah, high. Yeah, there's a plenty of
food, water, you can geta lot of fruits and so it's it's
(37:06):
amazing. You can't be Brazil.Yeah. So another river crossing. Yeah,
it almost looks like Maya right there. I love it. My running
version so beautiful. I love thisplace. Must go, it is beautiful.
(37:28):
Yeah. So these guys are alltaking other packs. I mean,
this guy looks like he's wearing ahydropack, right yeah. Yeah, runners,
they should carry the mandatory gears likeemergence, blanket, headlamps, phones,
So it's mandatory for them to havea backpack and they must be able
(37:54):
to carry at least one leader ofwater. Okay, yeah, so we
got some video coming up here, and uh I watched these before. These
are pretty cool. So let's takea look at those. M hm,
I love it. That is badass stuff, I mean, and I'm
(39:37):
telling him not making that up eitherthat. I'll tell you. I'm gonna
ask you a question here. Ithink I already know the answer to this,
But what what do you feel isthe most unique and intriguing aspect of
the UTMB competitions. I think,in my opinion, the Utimos frib of
the of the event eat John Lindsa lot of people that are pasionate about
(40:02):
mountains. If I can give anexample to to try to to make more
clear, like last year in thefinals, when there's like the one hundred
miles competition, the kid and Journetwho did the first place and Blanchard who
(40:24):
did the second place, they spendall the race helping each other, so
they shy food, they share water, So it's something that go beyond the
competition. People they try to findtheir best, they try to help the
other runners and they will like toto share their time on the jungle or
(40:47):
the nature facing some risks and facingsome some challenge that they won't have in
the city, they don't have intheir in their jobs. So that's what
