Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Canterbury Mornings podcast with John McDonald
from news Talk ZB.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Christ's Mere Film Majors. Whether it's going to fill good
morning mate? Right, you've got an announcement to make or
something to say about the intersection of Island Road and
Memorial Road because he has been chewed off about that,
but will come to that. Rape Many announced yesterday that
he's going to run for council again, and I know
that he's given a lot of credit, has been the
guy that got the council's books and order last time
he was on the council. Do you agree with him though,
(00:35):
when he sees that a five percent rates increase cap
is achievable.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
I think, as you know, my thoughts on getting raped
down and I got myself in strife once and said,
oh I get to lead at two or three percent.
Well it didn't go that well. But when you look
at what we've got at the moment at six point seven,
if you take the stadium off, which is one point seven,
we're down to five anyway. So if we if we
it can be done, if we stick to core basics
(01:00):
the whole.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
You can't you can't just take the stadium off, you
fixed it.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
The stadium's only there for this year as far as
the increase goes, and then there's the increase from the
stadium is not there, it vanishes, so other things will
phill its gap. So that's the that's the challenge, the
other things that phillips gap. You've got to be rigorous
and make sure we don't overhevet So.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
So you think he's not talking Pine and the sky, No,
I think.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
I think, as you know, I'd like to be down
there down that way, and if he's got some ideas
to get that down I will listen to anything.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Did you ask him to stand?
Speaker 3 (01:33):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:34):
No? Did you talk to him about standing?
Speaker 3 (01:36):
No? Not really. I think some others did and he
was making noises and so yeah, I was surprised the
other day when it actually was out there.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
All right, have you asked anyone stand? No? How do
you feel about he cam doing this business case into
a rail service, passenger rail service between christ Church and
the Order and Roliston.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
On the existing tracks.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Well, I'm assuming that's what can't be anywhere else.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
As you know, it's it is only a business case
and I'll be really keen to see the see the results.
If if it works, I'll be happy.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
I think you're facing face. You can't see you can't
see Phil's face. Phil's face spoke volumes just then.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
It may be great, okay, And it's good that they're
doing the business case for it. But I look at
things like that train from Hamilton to Auckland. It costs
fifth sorry eighty to ninety dollars subsidy every person that
gets on it. Now I know it's not the same distance,
but the business case will come out and show it.
So good on and for having a crack at it.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
But is that a fly in the ointment in terms
of your your push for what's it called rapid mass
mass transit?
Speaker 3 (02:50):
We should change the name of that. But we've done
our spatial plan where we know where the main drags
are going to be in for these buses to go
on the mass rapid transport stuff. I'm still not a
fan of light rail because I believe that the cost
to putting in the rails is phenomenally expensive. If we
go for these trackless trams, which I've got people from
(03:13):
China looking at at the moment we hit them in
the office a month ago. They've got them overseas have
a go at some of those, and they're on tires,
and if something happened, If something happens and there's an
accident or something, you're in a tram, you can't drive
somewhere else. But if you're in one that can go
down the side street, you're a lot better off.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
The people here from China, they're trying to sell things
to you, or.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
They make them. They like them, so we got them
out just to give this a bit of a heads up.
I had the two meres from the why maak and
sell on me and E can they're just just having
a bit of a yarn, just chewing the fat and
seeing what we can do. But coming along with using
the existing tracks, it's worth a crack.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Let's look at it all right. What's the cows were
going to do to clear up this confusion? You would
have heard about this got staff at the hospital having
no idea that there are car parks right across the
road from the hospital for them to use. What's the
story there?
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Well, the signage ain't to crash hot for us, I'd
have to say, but we did go. We'd have met
with the hospital people and the police, Saint Saint John
and give them all the heads up for what's happening.
But it's it's only there for the benefit of the
hospital staff like nurses or cleaners or whoever is there
at night, that they can park for free.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
But it has not anyone could use.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
It, anyone know, anyone, anyone visiting anyone.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
But it seems only about two people using.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
No And because we haven't well won, the signage isn't
clear enough in my view, and we haven't the hospital
haven't spread it out to all their people that there's
free parking there. I'd like to see that the trial extended.
It doesn't seem to be causing any grief. So let's
let's sign it up a lot better, or put those
marks on the road a bit better that are a
(04:52):
bit clearer, because there's only one at the start one
at the finish. You drive around there and you go,
what's that for? You don't know.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Because of us all because all it says, does is
it the stretch of road is a clear way between
seven thirty in the morning and seven thirty at night.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Around seven thirty at night untill seven thirty in the morning. Yeah,
so it's over nighttime.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yeah, But it doesn't say that, does it a clear way?
Is the times on a sign for a clearway indicate
the times that you can't park there? Are they?
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Yeah? Yeah, it depends wk yea.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Yeah yeah yeah. So therefore that I think you'll go
awhere and get a sign, but you've got to have
it upfront the same park here for at.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Night exactly you're reading with mine, mate, brilliant.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
All right, Okay, that's a bit of a worry in itself.
That'll be sortied. What that'll be sorted within a.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Week, maybe by the time I get hitd next.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Time two weeks. Then that's all right. What's going to
happen with the Litchfield street car parkers? Reading today that
you're being counters aren't happy with the return you're getting
on from it, and you should get rid of it.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
It's quite strange that some counselors yesterday were saying, oh,
maybe we shouldn't do this, maybe we shouldn't do that.
It's going out for consultation, that's what we're doing. But
eighteen months ago we all had a workshop on how
we could save money or things that we might be
able to get rid of. Ninety percent of counselors put
a sticker on the wall saying look at getting rid
of the Litchfield car park and now there seems to
be a bit of a change of change of thought.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
So why why because it's it's it's delivering a return, isn't.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
It Still it's not a fantastic.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Return one and a half percent of three three and three.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Yep, it could deliver a better return. But is that
the sort of job? Is that the sort of stuff
we need to be? And if we sell it and
take it off our loan, because as you know, we've
got a lot of money borrowed, and the sooner we
get some of those loans away and get rid of
non strategic assets, and it will it's got to help.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
But you know it's going to happen Wilson's parking event
like a rob's dog.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
It depends who by. Yes, now you've got to watch
You've got to watch those see takelights of I know
Carter Group have got the crossing. I think now they're
not going to go in there and screw the price
up through the roof because people won't come in and
use the the shops that they're tenanting out to leasing
out to all their tenants, and it'll stuff the city.
So I don't believe that one. We shouldn't be offering
(07:09):
real cheap state. If we're trying to get the thing
to make a good return, it should be the return.
We shouldn't be cutting our throat to see this.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
This is a tricky question. You'll say, I don't know,
But how much do you reckon you could get selling it?
Speaker 3 (07:22):
I don't know. The market will tell us, yeah, roughly though,
when off the top of my head, forty million, I
don't know, forty million somewhere, and I have no idea.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
I'm just that's just a real There's no secret piece
of paper somewhere nor in your drawers. Okayon say forty million,
all right, Okay, so you're being favor of selling it.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
No, we'll get the we'll get the we'll do the
consultation and get people to come back to us and
then we'll see. You know, it's it's We've got to
do it that way because it's a it's a big number.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
So when people get out of the Litchel Street car
park and they're heading home, and if they're driving up
Memorial Air and they want to get onto Island Road,
I gather they're having some issues there that.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
It's actually coming out of Island Road either way to
right going into town or turning right out of Island
Road going to the airport. I'd challenge anyone to go.
I actually went and had to look for myself.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Oh yeah, OK, I've got to right.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
From Jelly Park going down there and turning right to
go to the airport.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
All the other way.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Go down there. I went down there and I thought,
this can't be this bad. It's bloody sight. Worse than
this bad it is? It is awful now. I asked
the question of staff and I was told it's it's
working the way it was designed.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
To be a pain in the backside.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
That's my speed. You someting to think more like me already.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
That's theario.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
But if that's the way the person the consultant designed it,
we need to have a serious talk to the consultant
because what's happening. People are coming up to Memorial AV
heading into town. The tailback is so long. I've been
talking one hundred and fifty meters. Everyone's shooting down Hamilton Av.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
Is this a certain times a day?
Speaker 3 (09:00):
Then, yeah, yeah, at certain times a day when the
university is out whenever, and schools are out sort of
three to five or something. I went down there, you
stay at three o'clock when it was a nightmare. But
I'd just like you to put it out there and
if other people have come up with what I've just
said or what I'm receiving, put it out there and
have a bit of a yarn about.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
It in terms of what do you want to find out.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
If I might be blowing smoke. So I just want
to know that other people having the problems that I
have been told about. And if you get a great response,
we'll see what we do. I'd love to see a
green arrow.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
All right, hold on now you speaking milanis alright? Give
us the yell of you got an issue with memorial
of Island Road intersection? Is that the dog's breakfast that
Phil suspects it as O eight hundred and eighty ten
and eighties a number. The green arrows, the right turning
arrows my view, as they should be on pretty much
every intersection in town. What do you reckon?
Speaker 3 (09:51):
Absolutely, we're possible. Sometimes there's not enough with but.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
If you put bit of advice, if you put green
arrows in every intersection in town, you've got the election
sort all right, I'll go and buy an arrow Massione
halfway there with your Manchester Street creation which is brilliant,
but more three and arrows. Where to go?
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Mack?
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Thank you for good Anyboddy so yeah okay? Christ Church
