Encouragement for any Northlander who feels hard done by from the region-wide power outages last year to explore legal avenues.

Local businesses are taking class action against Transpower and its lines maintenance contractor over the outages caused from a pylon collapsing in Glorit, north of Helensville.

An investigation found a relatively inexperienced and inadequately supervised Omexom worker removed nuts from three of the pylon's four legs.

Northland MP Grant McCallum told Ryan Bridge he's backing the local businesses seeking legal action.

He says we all know what happened which still beggars belief, but we will have to wait for the legal process to be completed.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Northern Pylon fiasco is heading to court. Remember last
June you had the workers removing the bolts, the pylon
falls over and region goes dark for days. Twenty thousand
businesses hit and now they're taking Transpowder court to get
their money back. Thank you very much. Grant McCallum is
MP for North and joining me now, Hey Grant.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Yeah, good morning. Right.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
What was the damage?

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Well, they've estimate it anywhere between sixteen eighty million dollars
losses across across the region. So that will be ultimately
have to be proven by people if it's going to
be if the claim is going to be successful.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
You're supporting this.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
I encouraged anyone who wants fields. They've been hard done
by the explore all avenues and some local businesses have
and I think and all powers them because there were
definitely losses across the North and now the question is
whether they're legally stacks up and they get something out
of it.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
It does it? Well, what's your have you have they had,
they've obviously got a legal opinion on that they think
it does.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
It's not my place to get from the court process,
but let's just see where it lands. But we all
know what happened, and the reports are showing what happened,
which to this day is still bigg as belief. But
so yes, there's a legal process and let's follow it through.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Has there been any ongoing effects, like obviously there was
the few days where they were down, But did it
cause it? Is it still causing problems?

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Not directly, but I know it put a lot of
stress on one or two businesses I know up north.
The loss of power for a big business like J
and L the mill in Ti Tire, which is out
of they they didn't compare come for four or five
days was significant and that's a business that, like a
lot of mills, are struggling, so that was not helpful
to them. So yeah, the effect has been lingering, you

(01:43):
might say, But yeah, I know there've been a number
of business owners who have been quite annoyed with the
whole thing and the fact that Transpower and their of
you haven't and their of you haven't compensated them.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
All right, Hey, Grandel's having a look at your electric
numbers from last election. Are you worried about next year?

Speaker 2 (02:00):
I'm working hard to get around the Electra mate and
do my best. The electors will make their mind up.
I'm always worried about what electors want, and I get
out there and listen to them. But I guess I
drove up to ky Tyre from home. That's three hours
each way to attend the memorial service an amazing man
from Kai tire monty night. It was a really really
amazing services. It was a real leader and all. So

(02:21):
it's the sort of thing you do.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
You granted you one of these backbenchers worried about your boss.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
No, no, no, he's doing a tough job. Really, well,
come on, you're I knew you'd go here in this conversation.
You guys can't help yourselves.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
We can't, so you said, so, excellent job. You would
never roll.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Them, No, of course not. He will need us into
the and the election. He will election.
