US President Joe Biden's expected to dominate the first day of the Democratic National Convention.

It starts in Chicago today and is where Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Governor Tim Walz will accept their presidential and vice presidential nominations.

Biden's expected to give an address and make a symbolic handover to Harris.

FSN Correspondent Simon Marks told Ryan Bridge they're getting the uncomfortable bits out of the way on the first day.

He says President Biden will be the main speaker, alongside First Lady Jill Biden and former First Lady, Hillary Clinton.

Harris will be looking to ride her wave of momentum into the convention.

She currently has a six-point lead over Donald Trump in the latest Fox News poll, Marks saying that Harris will be wanting the convention to go flawlessly over the next few days.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is day one of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Today.
Biden is going to be speaking later on our time.
We've got Obama speaking Tuesday. Hillary Clinton is speaking as well.
You've got Waltz on Thursday, and then you've got Harris
the main event on Friday, our time. Simon Marx is
with Feature Story News is a correspondent. He's at the

(00:21):
convention in Chicago and he's with us. Now, good morning.
We'll get there in a second. It's a long way
from here to Chicago. Good morning, Simon, Good morning, Ryan.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Can you hear me?

Speaker 1 (00:34):
I got you just fine. Thank you for being with us.
What's the main event. What's happening today?

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Well, they're getting the awkward stuff out of the way
here today. We're beginning to see some delegates arriving here
at the United Center where this ninety six hour made
for TV spectacular will be playing out over the next
four days. And of course it's all about swooning over
Kamala Harris and propelling her on the her less than
eighty day journey to election Day, but to night about

(01:04):
swooning over President Joe Biden and paying fulsome tribute to him,
not least for his decision to drop out of his
re election campaign, so President Biden will be the main
speaker on the first night here, alongside First Lady Jill
Biden and former First Lady Hillary Clinton. In many ways,

(01:26):
the Democrats consigning some of the more uncomfortable moments of
this convention to the first night in order to get
them out of the way, to clear the decks, so
that Kamala Harris can then pivot away from her ongoing
need at the moment to pay tribute to Joe Biden
and to focus instead on the direction that she wants
to take this party, not just between now an election day,

(01:49):
but of course over the next four years. If she wins.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
Four weeks since Spiden pulled out of the right, two
weeks since Harris officially won the nomination through that role,
call does is she going to given in? Has she?

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Do?

Speaker 1 (02:04):
You know? Have you heard whether she's doing a one
on one with anybody around the convention or is there
a press conference.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
There's no indication of an interview or a press conference.
They certainly haven't announced that yet. And as you know,
she's been heavily criticized by former President Donald Trump for
her failure to give interviews. But I think that the
Harris team, you know, they've been thrust into this unexpectedly.
Behind the scenes, they're trying to figure out what all
of this means in terms of the party's platform. It's manifesto,

(02:34):
which will be officially adopted here, because they've basically inherited
Joe Biden's manifesto. And you've got tens of thousands of
protesters bearing down or threatening to bear down on the
convention site saying they want the platform to be rewritten
certainly as far as the Middle East is concerned and
the crisis in Gaza, and she wants this to go
absolutely flawlessly over the next four days. There is a

(02:57):
margin for error for her. She's had a huge fillip
here in the last couple of hours. A fresh Fox
News poll suggests that she has a six point lead
over Donald Trump among likely voters, and she'll be hoping
to get a big bump out of this convention when
it is over cementing that lead in place, and then

(03:18):
perhaps they will get to interviews, a forum in which
she has not always excelled in the past.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Interesting, isn't it, Simon? Thanks for that, Simon Marx. If
it's in correspondent at the DNC in Chicago, which kicks
off today. For more from news talks, b listen live
