An unexpected Labour policy announcement was a bit of a shock for leader Chris Hipkins today.

Health spokesperson, Ayesha Verrall revealed the policy in an op-ed for New Zealand Doctor magazine.

It proposes to create an independent body to estimate and allocate GP funding increases, rather than the Government.

Newstalk ZB senior political correspondent Barry Soper says Labour 'botched up' the rollout of this announcement.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Either. I had a seven hundred and sixty one wordle
streaking about three months ago. It just disappeared and now
no streak is recorded at all. Do you has been
a winner too? I always start with a new word
first up, more interestingly, And Barry, what's your starting word?

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Do you as yours? Either? I know that, I know
I've already said that. Yeah, it's yours. I change mine, yeah, yours.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Yours just goes with Like when you're angry, you just
start with the word angry sometimes, don't you.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
But I'm never angry.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
I never started with a lot a lot actually anyway,
Barry Soper, senior political correspond correspondent, is with us now
speaking of angry Willie Jackson.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Well, Willy's certainly on the bandwangon, isn't he? And he
has an association with Dame nol and Tarra the suspended
netball coach. Look, I think this is going to come
to a head fairly quickly. Actually here there. Netball New
Zealand receives more than three million dollars from the taxpayer

(00:54):
through funding various things like high performance sport and what
have you. Mark Mitchell, who's a sports minister, he's basically
spoken to Sport in New Zealand and he's outlined in
his expectations to bring the impass to an end. And
I think the only end in sight for this, and

(01:14):
I'll put up a hand if it doesn't happen. I
think Noel and Tyro will be reinstated before much longer.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Ah, Well, if you think that, then you must then
surely Jenny Wiley has to get the sack.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Well, I don't know. I mean, that's my expectation is
that Tyrone will be back. I think there's a feeling
generally in government circles, circles as well as anywhere else
that she's been badly treated. Few players that are not
happy with the schedule that she puts some turn expects

(01:47):
them to follow. Sorry, a few part players does not
a team make.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
All right, what did you make of Chippy's day today?

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Well, it was an oops moment, wasn't it. That?

Speaker 3 (01:58):
You know?

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Unfortunate li Ascheverril is always sick today and she published
an op ed in New Zealand Doctor which went out
today and outlined a policy that Labor was going to announce.
And in fact she jumped the gun and Chris Hopkins
was caught short by it. She wrote this, and basically

(02:24):
it came as news to her leader, Chris Hopkins, We're.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Going to have to wait if you're interested in an
announcement that we may or may not be making. The
fact that I'm not aware of it. We have health
policy coming.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Short time later, we had this to say.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
You caught me slightly by surprise. I was expecting that
health announcement to be tomorrow, but that was my timing
that I had in the back of my mind that
was incorrect. Aischaverral has been working on a policy around
independent pricing for GP practices. A significant gap between the
funding GP practices need to deliver service as normal had
opened over at the period of about a decade. We've

(03:02):
been working on a mechanism to try and stop that
from happening again in the future, which is why we
had agreed on an independent pricing authority. Unfortunately, through conflimence
of events, Pasha as unexpectedly away sick today as that
went out at midday to day. It is a policy
that has been approved at something that we've been working
on for a wee while.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Now get your act together if you go to be
announcing policy. They've only had one up until now, and
that was yesterday, which was and this was an absolute
bot chut. And of course within seconds that happening, who
was on putting out a press statement. Chris Bishop, who's
not even the health spokes or not even the Health minister,
but he put out a statement saying that it's just

(03:42):
another desperate attempt to look busy without doing the hard work.
Said there's no costings, no plan, no evidence it'll deliver
anything meaningful. So quite right, Yeah, I've been short and embarrassing.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Okay, so what are you hearing is happening with the
Maori Party.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Well, what I've heard is that, look, there will be
something happening when Rawory White to Tea finally he gets
back from China. That he's been away with the Kappa
Huka group. God knows how he gave himself leave from
parliament to do that, but nevertheless he did. And when
has parties in the state that it is, it doesn't

(04:19):
say much about the leadership that it goes off sea
overseas with an entertainment group. Nevertheless, that's where he's been.
When he gets back, I think things will start moving.
I was making inquiries around the Maldi Party today and
of course Rory White to Tea. He's married to the
Chief Press Secretary of the Maldi Party and she's the

(04:40):
daughter of John Tammaherley, the president of the Maldi Party. Well,
this young Hannah Raffiti Clark, m P Clark, her mum
and a sister are working for her. I found out
today Mary party is a big family affair. And as
we know, as we know that Caupa Kingi got into

(05:04):
trouble for over spending her budget. And where did a
lot of the money go to, Well, it went to
his son Eru, who was brought on as a contractor
and he organized the Equoi to Parliament recently. So everybody
is in everybody else's pocket here, and it seems the
only one out of pocket at the end of it
is the poor old, long suffering taxpayer. So I think

(05:24):
what you're going to find is you're going to find
a split in the Maori Party. You're going to see
Maramino Cuppa Kinghi. She will be obviously out of the party,
probably stand for the rest of the term as an independent.
Eru Caupa Kinghi he's doubled down. He said he still
supports the Maori Party, but he has no credence with

(05:46):
the party now. So look, there's going to be a split,
I think, and it'll come.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
I don't think it'll just be muddy, I mean, or
as well. It might be Takuterferos. All right, Barry, thanks
very much, Barry Sober, Senior Political Correspondence.
