Huge win overnight for Jordi Beamish at the World Athletics
in Tokyo.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Watch the kyway he finishes so quickly, How he is coming,
How is closing this side fi side?

Speaker 1 (00:10):
And this time it.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Goes to Tamish.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Albercarny is beaten on the line. Now the twenty eight
year old one goal in gold in the three thousand
meters steeple chase, the first ever medal of any kind
on the track at the World Champs level. His finish
has been compared to running legend Peter Snell in his prime.
Cam Mitchell is the chief executive of Athletics New Zealand
and with us Hey Cam, Hey, hey the hell? Thanks good?
How are you? You were at the race as your

(00:35):
heart's slowed down.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Slowly getting the area. It was a pretty special night.
It was amazing to be there.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
How did we not know that he had this in him?
Did you know he had this in him?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
I did? I believed. I mean, I'm not sure if
you saw the World indoor fifteen hundred meters where he
kicked off the back straight with three hundred and zo
and one in a similar style, so he certainly got
that impressive speed at the tail end of the race,
and yeah, it was just an amazing race from him
to sort of come from eighth or teenth. I think
he was with four hundred to go, and I guess
the storyline with the heat where he got knocked over

(01:08):
and took a shoe to the face and picked himself
up and finished the race. So he's built an masive
following over here. It's been really awesome to see.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Do you think the comparisons with Peter Snell are fair?

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Oh? Look, I think if any New Zealander is winning
at this level, then they deserve to be held in
that esteem with people like Peter and John Walker and
various other amazing track athletes that we've had in our
history of athletics.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
And when where do you reckon Jordie is in his career?
Is he sort of at the start of it, part
way through reaching the end? I mean twenty eight for
running that seems the old.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
No, No, he's still got a long way to go,
so he's I mean he sort of sort of flip
flopped between the fifteen hundred and the steeple. He's now
landed on the steeple and he's world class that we've
seen last night, so yeah, I mean the kick that
he has the ability to finish a race with that
level of speed is pretty impressive. So yeah, he's certainly
got a huge future. And I guess the Olympics in

(02:04):
la is a couple of years away and we're hopeful
that he'll be able to put on a strong footing there.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
How's he going? Has he come down from the high
of the win?

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Yeah, he's having a great day. He's had a lot
of media interests as mum and dad and brother is
over here as well, so he's been enjoying time with
his family and naturally on a pretty a high.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
I bet he is okay, So this is the name
we need to get to know. Yeah, sure do.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
And Hamish Kurz jumping tonight in the final and then
we've got our three female pole wadles all on the
final on Wednesday nights. So lots more metal opportunities we
hope for the New Zealand athletes over here in Tokyo.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
Good stuff, Hey, Cam, thank you very much. Enjoy yourself.
