D'Arcy Waldegrave: Sportstalk host on Dame Lisa Carrington confirming she's committed to the 2028 LA Olympics

Dame Lisa Carrington's decision to commit to a fifth Olympic campaign has been met with elation at Canoe Racing New Zealand.

It's been confirmed the eight-time gold medallist intends to be on the water at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

Darcy's here with sport. Hey Darcy, greetings, Ryan. Beating big

On LA twenty eight. So yeah, coming back, which is
I find spectacular because when she came back last time
before Paris, there are so many naysayers out there going,
don't besmirch what you've done, don't block your copybook. You
should go out now on top. Why you're so good?

She said, hold my paddle and came back and won
three golds, so extraordinary. I don't think there'll be so
many people now going I don't know if you've still
got it because that just drives her on. So another
reason to cheer is she's such a phenom. What an
athlete that woman is. Like the other Dame who is
retired today, as Dame Sophie passed, let's go who will

go go down? Like suspect? Is our most decorated Olympia
If she was in the Paralympics. It's still the Olympic
Games version of it. And she's finally decided enough is enough.
No more jumping in the drink at four in the morning,
beating the birds up, and she's going to carry on
doing what. Whatever she does, she'll be very, very successful.

She's not lost a Paralympic.

Well, she's going to be on the show actually after
five thirty tonight because and she talks about I spoke
to her just before we came on, but she talks
about the fact she just had a wee boy he
was born last year. She wants to go and be
a mum as well, you know, so she's got and
she wants to get into a bit of broadcasting and
all sorts of stuff. I didn't want to say. Not

a great time.

All the sports broadcasters go, oh right, she'll be an
absolute weapon. I hope she's not lost to swimming as
well though. She's been such a great shining example of
someone in the pool.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Absolutely who's going to be the next Warriors captain.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
We've got Steve I on the show up after seven
o'clock berg. Steve Price is a Warrior's captain ninety one times.
I think it was one hundred and twenty one caps
in total. He should know a little bit about what
it takes to lead the Warriors. He went through some
pretty tumultuous times, including he was captain when Sunny Fire
I drowned, which is an awful time for the entire club.

And what it means to be a captain in situations
like that, what it means to be a conduit between
the coach and the players. Are you the player's friends
or do you stand above them and be like, I'm
actually still the captain. Do you lead by example on
the field? Do you shout at them off the field.
It there's so many different aspects as to what the
captain should be. The captain he wants is first chains
