The Black Caps' chances of progressing to the Super 8 stage at the T20 World Cup are all-but over.

Coming off a first-up drubbing by Afghanistan, New Zealand have gone down by 13 runs to the West Indies in Trinidad.

They've only been able to muster 136 for 9 - in pursuit of 150 to win.

Sportstalk host D'Arcy Waldegrave unpacks the loss.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Eyes up, Darcy Watergrave.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
No, I'm sulking.

Speaker 1 (00:04):
But are you sulking? Oh? How about that?

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Are you laughing? Yes, it's really cruel. I don't kick
a sports fan when he's down.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Mate, Come on. Lose to the West Indies by thirteen
runs not good enough?

Speaker 2 (00:18):
No? And then I lost previously to afghanis start not
good enough? And why I'm talking last night and characters, Well,
it's one game. Every team is going to have a
bad game. It doesn't reflect poorly on the team. And
they were going really, really well this afternoon. They were
really pushing down on the necks of the West Indians
and was looking good and then Darryl Mitchell came in

(00:42):
and bolting over in the last two overs got dispatched
for I think it was nineteen and eighteen respectively, and
that shot them out when he died one hundred and
fifty to win, and then the wickets just kept the
tumbling right at the very end. Santa Claus had a
bit of a crack and had a few sexes, but
it was too little, too late, pointing. Oh, there was
some okay bowling, but there was some also problem awful.

(01:05):
What was the problem in the tournament? Yeah. New Zealand
And won no games.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Yeah, why why?

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Well, the general thoughts are that they had no build
up and they had no warm up games, so they
were all underdone when they turned up.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Just answer me this question, because we talked about this yesterday.
Did they have time for warm up games?

Speaker 2 (01:23):
There was said by Steed that it was difficult to
fit them in by the time they wanted to. But
I find that a pretty bad excuse. You'll find something
when there's a will. There's a way. The Australians had
it creat they'd had one with nine players that had
a couple of their coaches come on and play. They
would find it, they would do it and if they
didn't sort it out, well, it does this line in

(01:43):
New Zealand Cricket for not actually going hold on, we
need something. We've got to do something, Nana, we'll be right,
and we weren't right consecutive games and look they New
Zealand Cricket might go, no, that's not the case. We're
actually forcing into the corner. There's nothing we could do
about it. Well, you run the show. You need to
do better. One of the best thing about this result, though,
I mean there's still two more games to go, and

(02:03):
there's a small chance New Zella might get in, but
it revolves on other results going our way and the
run rates blying out. It's not going to happen. It's
not going to I'll bet what's the left of my
career after today on it. So we should be fine.
But you know the positive thing, what's that, Well, we
don't have to get up at two thirty in the
morning to watch the Black Cats anymore because it's a
waste of time.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
As send them home and let's have a little conversation.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
They've got to play Uganda and Papua New Guinea after that.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
They've got to come back, and they've got to they've
got to get what's coming at them from the public right.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Because they will.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
They will, and they deserve it.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
And the coach will get it and the players will
get it. And I'm just disturbed about maybe the captain.
See at the very end when the Seamas are bowling
well and Williamson didn't really do his Matt's properly, and
suddenly Darryll Mitchell, a guy comes on, he's all right,
you know, military medium pace and he has hardly played
and he's got smash all over the park.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
It's just not poor mats on something which I'm excited about.
How wh do you think this rumor is that the
NRL wants Eden Park to host a state of origin
gap Oh, I know.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
The rumors there, the possibility of it and Almos going
to carry on being mister dirty negative after today is
about the same as the Black Caps somehow getting through this. Well,
there are a number of reasons behind this about why
one of them the only place they could have it
over here would be Eden Park, right, It's the only
place big enough. Yeah, what are the chances of the
Eden Park residents allowing a game being played not even park,

(03:25):
the Garden of Eden that Mount Eden kings and it'll
had to start at or about half past nine New
Zealand time to get the broadcast rights for over in Australia.
Well yeah, because that's half past seven, that'd be the
earliest that go. So that means they need dispensation that
he law changes whatever in order to have a game
that goes to maybe half past meet.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Do you realize they can do the fast track consent
and they don't need this kind of permission, That's the
first thing you go.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
I don't like the chance of it. I don't like
the chances of it. Why on earth would the Australian
public even agree to this? This is their competition, this
is theirs. Look, they might want to branch out we
but Greg Peters is going to join us on the
show inside our CEO up after seven o'clock to talk
about why. The other big factor here is the amount
of money it actually costs. Because Melbourne and Perth and

(04:13):
all of these cities they peel the folding off saying
we want it here for the economic benefit. They pay
for it five to ten million dollars. Oh wow, to
get them to turn up. Who's going to pay for
that over here? So I don't know if we've got
the ground, I don't know if we've got the resident support.
I don't know if we've got the money. It goes
on and on and on, like building a new stadium.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
In some cricket texts, sure call themselves cricketers whither they
are a bloody embarrassment. That's what they are. That's from
John here. The bunch of has been's standard practice, like
the abs, pick all the you peckle that has been
is no youth and look to the future.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
I suppose it's better being has been than it never was, but.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
There's a middle ground. Hey, thank you very very much.
Darcy really appreciate it. Does water sports or coastal back
at seven, It's full twenty three. For more from Hither
