A Te Pāti Māori MP is under fire after questioning the Children's Minister's Māori identity.

Mariameno Kapa-Kingi made the remark to Karen Chhour in a Select Committee meeting this morning during heated discussion of boot camps, youth offending, and removing Treaty provisions from the Oranga Tamariki Act.

Kapa-Kingi claimed Chhour had 'knowledge gaps' and didn't understand the essence of being Māori.

Newstalk ZB political editor Jason Walls says David Seymour has been quick to lambast Te Pāti Māori over these comments.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jason Wolves as well us from Parliament. Jason, good afternoon,
Good afternoon, Ryan. So Party Marti's at it again.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Indeed they are, and you know they started yesterday on
the right track. I have listened to what Debbie Nadi
Wapaka said during the Prime Minister's debate or the debate
on the Prime Minister's speech.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
I'm standing on behalf of Taparty Marti today to constructively
give our view on the Prime Minister's statement. And I've
got to be really honest. What I've witnessed this afternoon
is showing it even day one, the deterioration of our
behavior and our debate can't be held.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
So I thought, oh good, they're going to stay in.
They're not going to say out of pocket things, They're
not going to be too extreme with their language. I thought, fantastic.
They've taken the year, they've taken the summer to assess
alas it took less than twenty four hours for TI
Party Marti to show their own deterioration in the way
that they're speaking and the way that they're interacting with
the other MP's. Have a listen to what TI Party Marti.

(00:56):
MP Mediameno Kapachini told Karen Short during a Select Committee
this morning when talking about the boot camps.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
So how in your institutionalized, individualized using your words process,
does your system and institutional system understand that and respond
to it in an enduring way because it doesn't.

Speaker 5 (01:17):
Sound like it.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Look, I have to disagree with most of what you've said,
and you're entitled to say it, but I actually disagree
with most of what because you've got.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
A gap acknowledgements you don't understand.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
So what she said there, that's that's Marie Manau Kapakini
telling Karen Shaw, who is a Marty MP, that she
doesn't understand the essence of being Mary. And this is
the same MP who accused the Coalition government of having
a quote mission to exterminate Marty and who has used
words like white supremacy, pakiha supremacy when criticizing the repeal
of seven double A of the Atamaniki actor. Meanwhile, sure

(01:55):
has been the victim of these attacks before, as you're
well remember Labor MP Calvin Davison. Calvin Davidson said that
she saw the world through a quote vanilla lens. But
according to TI Party, Marty called leader Debbie Nadi we
Packer that she essentially stood by the words of the
MP I.

Speaker 6 (02:11):
Mean our role is to challenge and you have seen
it in here specifically we mentioned the day that we
did the Hucker on what it's like to be cornered
and held to ransom.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
But Seymour's having none of it. He says that all
people who oppose racism should oppose TI Party.

Speaker 7 (02:28):
Marty, Well, no, because they don't think they've done anything wrong.
And that is my point, is that they are race fanatics,
racial supremacist people who believe that before you can talk
about anything else, you've got to talk about your ethnic background.
And that's what I'm wholeheartedly opposed to have.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
So we had a couple of minutes of respite yesterday
in the House and we're back to, as I said,
the way things were.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
It's interesting because this has happened for years and years.
They used to say this about Paula Bennett when she
was in government. They say about Simon Bridges as well,
you know, you're not a real I think was the
phrase that they used to throw around. Then meanwhile, Winston,
what's he done? What are the Greens upset about?

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Well, the first shots were fired yesterday when Winston Peter
said this in the house.

Speaker 8 (03:11):
I know they're laughing. The Greens are laughing at that
because they find that comical. They find that comical. The
very people who are here, on the very refuge that
we get to them, have come here with their ideas
foreign to our country, native to this and they wish
to impos upon out Parliament. Now you don't You're not
going to succeed here. You might be laughing now, but

(03:32):
you might be laughing now, but you have reclined tomorrow
come to this country. Show some Verrgian No, let me
turn out our policy in sunshine.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
So that was directed at Green MP's Lawrence Sunnan and
Francisco Hernandez, who are both of Asian descent, which the
Greens are taking exception to.

Speaker 5 (03:51):
Well, to imply that a migrant cannot voice political views
and to dismiss political views because of someone's microant background
and high level of the soils to the country, and
that is an issue that we take but more than
anything again, this is about the harm that beast words
of course outside of these four walls.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
So obviously they're not happy about that. Winston Peters today
was trying to wiggle out of it.

Speaker 8 (04:12):
I was talking about two people jeering and shouting from
the back benches as the debates of no moments then,
and I was putting out it in the historical parliamentary
debating fashion. If you can't take it, go somewhere else.
Are you too soft for that next question?

Speaker 2 (04:27):
So, as per usual, he turned the questions back on us.
And that's, of course that's not what he means. You
could just go back and physically see what he said
written down. He's absolutely out of line in terms of
what he's implying here and what he said. Meanwhile, the
Greens are also calling out Shane Jones from the same
party for heckling in the house as well. Now it's
a little hard to hear. Have a listen of.

Speaker 5 (04:47):
Human life decreases. But it's not just about human life.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
So he yells send the Mexicans home. See if you
can make it up when I play it again.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Of human life decreases.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
But it's not just so, the Green say. It's a
reference to the fact that Ricardo Menandez march a Green MP,
is from Mexico. So a little bit more explaining for
New Zealand First to do again It's like you pick
any day from the political calendar in the last twenty
five years and we're back to back to the future.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Really fantastic. What is it day too? And we're xenophobia
and racism top of the agenda? Jason, As I mean.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
It as expected right, Well, I shouldn't have expected anything.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Different, dear me. Jason Wall's News Talk SIB's political editor
