Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Marcus lush Night's podcast from Newstalks.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
A'd be welcome. Good evening. I hope you are good.
I hope you are warm. It was minus three when
I woke up this morning, so for every cover, every
cold frost. So I sat in the car faile. Then
I got out and used my B card, which I
think is the bus card for Dunedin and Queenstown to

(00:32):
get rid of the ice head to get I think
I must on things to get rid of the ice
on the wing mirrors. I thought that was going to
cause me the greatest concern. So there we go. That
was today anyway, So that's that. Yeah, unbelievably cold. Wasn't
expecting it and it was about nine o'clock so wow. Anyway,
and I see too there was a crash of people
going from Queenstown to Milford Sound. Gosh, every year there's

(00:56):
a number of crashes of that, all those vans and buses.
It's a big day. They get up and the drive
to Milford Sound it's about three hours. Then they're out
and they're coming back. But they'd be up early in
the frost, black iceed tear and a lot of them are
in those kind of van busses. What's the word for
a van bus van bus, I suppose, and yeah, probably
not fantastic on those roads, the old van bus. So yeah,

(01:19):
kind of kind of thought for a long time the
better thing would have been the tunnel through at Glenorky,
but the Glen Orky people didn't want that. Anyway. We
might discuss that. I'm kind of topic agnostic tonight. There's
a few things I want to talk about. You might
have your own stuff that you want to talk about also,
so you will leave a bit open, so I won't
one topic night. At tonight we'll be bouncing around. I suspect,

(01:39):
of course. Tomorrow night we've got State of Origin we'll
be on during our show, which I'm excited about. And
Thursday I'll be keeping a watching eye. I'll probably go
to the first half of the basketball. The inver Cargo team,
the South and Sharks, have done quite well. They started,
they lost about the first five and then now and
they've finished fourth in the table. So they have a
home playoff match on Thursday. I think it starts at seven.

(02:02):
I'll go for the first three caparts and then come
to work. But they win that and then they'll be
playing the first and second team if they win that. Actually,
I shouldn't be arrogant about that, because they mightn't. But
they're very good teams. So excited about that. I've supported
them for a long time. In the last couple of
years there's been salary caps and stuff, and the team
hasn't quite been as peppy. But boy, this year they've
come right. It's fantastic. Anyway, that's the next couple of nights.

(02:25):
We'll be exciting tonight. What are we talking about? I
don't know, a couple of a couple of things. I'll
start with tonight. Oh, and have you got any breaking
news that you know about? Oh, I didn't feel that
quake this morning. There was a quake at quarter past twelve,
which is peak for me, just when I'm going to sleep.
I was disappointed. I hate missing out on quakes. That

(02:47):
might sound like a weird thing, but if there's one
you wake up on Jerney, there's quick you've mistake. You
think we'll hang about. That's disappointing. I've missed out on that.
So anyway, I didn't feel that. I'm not quite sure
why they have been after shocks, apparently through the Darted film,
any of those either. But anyway, eight hundred and eighty

(03:09):
e tod you there are no rules. Anyone can call
as long as you're cyberish and of age. If you've
got your own topics you want to dictate, you are
more than welcome. So I've got three things top of mind.
Three topics unrelated, well two are kindly related. Oh, by

(03:32):
the way, I see on the news tonight they've been
reporting where you can get death cap mushrooms in New Zealand.
I wouldn't be surprised with all the profile of somebody
that doesn't try and poison someone. I'm thinking probably not
advised to tell people where to get them. Mind you,
with the Internet, and I was reading today that Aaron
Patterson was very much involved online in the crime solving

(03:55):
community and she had a very good scientific mind. So
there we go. That's a bit about her. It's more
and more information comes out anyway. The topics for tonight
are as thus, firstly, Uber is arriving in vert cargo
and they are advertising for Uber drivers. I hear it

(04:16):
was on the news also to whether they're whether they
are employees or whether they are the gig economy just
a question to you if you are an uber driver
or an uber eats driver, And I'm unsure if they
people same people do both because every time I've been
in an uber it doesn't smell foodie, or maybe they
put them in the boot. So I wouldn't mind knowing

(04:38):
the lie of the land of being an uber driver
in twenty twenty five. If you've worked at one of those,
how's it working out for you? Because three or four
years back people said it was dire when the price
of gas was high and no one was going out
because the economy had tanked, when it's still tanked. I'm
just curious to know if you are an uber driver,

(04:59):
if that's working out for you, So give me a
call and tell me what the lie of the land.
Are you making any money.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
Is it?

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Are you being treated well? Is it a pleasant kind
of a thing to do. I wouldn't mind your information
about that. Although I'm not thinking of becoming an uber driver,
although I didn' give it a glancing thought, I think
onely would be quite fun. Andn it comes on to

(05:33):
the other topic I've thought of on the back of
the uber driving and part time jobs, has anyone gone
to get a part time job because they feel that
they want to get more out of the community and
spend more time with other people. Talking about going in

(05:55):
jobs when you don't really need jobs. Has someone gone
and done that they thought, I'm going to get a
part time job to meet people in the evening or
something like that. I don't quite know how to call
that topic, but a part time job when you don't
really need a part time job. Has someone done that,
like gone to work at McDonald's because they want a
joy of working with young people or something like that.
I'm kind of curious exploring that. And also tonight, so
that might be something that you've done. So these are

(06:16):
two topics for so far tonight. Are you an uber driver?
And have you got a part time job not because
you need it, but just because you want to get
back out the community. And how did that work out
for you? I suppose a bit like volunteering? And the
third question did I have for you? Does anyone even
bother with recipe books anymore? Or is everyone doing it
all online and going to websites? I see on that

(06:39):
Tin Can Eat or whatever that website was that Aaron
Patterson was on. She sold Courtervillion books because the last
chefs Superstar Rivers saw was either Jamie Oliver and Donna Hay.
But I don't know. I don't even know if a
coking book still sell good. Evening, Renee, It's Marcus welcome.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
Hello, thank you.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
How are you, Renee?

Speaker 3 (07:01):
I'm good? How are you?

Speaker 2 (07:02):
Are you? An Uber driver? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (07:05):
I do Uber East.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
So here's a question to people that do Uber eats
not do uber not? Do just straight out Uber. It's
just you do one or the other. Is that right?

Speaker 3 (07:16):
So you can do both? But your car has to
be like in a certain condition to do driver.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Okay, okay, and you'd put the food in the boot
I presume, is that right? So it's you you can
doesn't smell a food?

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Is that?

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Is that their concerned?

Speaker 3 (07:34):
So I just do uber eat Yeah yeah, yeah, but
I'm not sure. I guess they would do that if
they did both.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
And how does uber eats work for you?

Speaker 3 (07:49):
So I like the flexibility of it. I just started
in December, yes, so I'm just trying to like seeing
how it goes. But yeah, mainly the flexibility. Yeah, it's
kind of like an in between thing at the moment.

(08:12):
For me, the winter time is definitely better.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Oh okay, sure, And is the income reliable? Can you
guarantee how much you're going to get? Can you plan
and think I'm going to probably get this much this week?

Speaker 3 (08:26):
It does fluctuate, just depending on how often I work
and how busy it is. So if if the weather
is pretty bad, like raining, I'll make more money.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
Yeah, but it's most of the time. It doesn't pay
minimum wage, so.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
It pays less, it pays less or more.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
It pays less most of the time. If there's like
a storm, it'll pay more. Or if it's like when
I started around Christmas that paid more. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
So do you do something else or is that that's
your full time? That your sole job?

Speaker 4 (09:16):
So I do?

Speaker 3 (09:17):
I do have other works. I do some freelance work
as well.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Okay, yeah. So has it been disappointing with how much
your owner? It's been Okay, So.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
It's been okay. I'm kind of seeing how it averages
out over a year. Yeah, it was disappointing, like after
Christmas it was pretty slow, but it's been pretty good
during autumn and winter.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
Time, Renee. Is it a job you get better at?
Do you learn tricks so you can maximize your income
or is is it not like that?

Speaker 3 (09:57):
Yeah, I guess you kind of like learn little hacks
and things. So I definitely try increase my income with
it with like tips, so I'll really go out of
my way for like customer servers, which the tips I

(10:18):
was surprised about, Like people do give quite good tips.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Sometimes, so and can people specify to get you? Do
you have regulars or is it just not that? Not
how Uber works if you're getting if you're getting a
meal from a certain restaurant, it's just the closest driver,
is it. You can't specify who you want to deliver it.

Speaker 3 (10:39):
No, Yeah, so the person who orders doesn't get a choice.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
Okay, okay, so you have got having got regulars that
you can't you haven't got regular big tippers that you get.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
I do have regulars, but it's more that they order
a lot and then I remember, like I've had this
person a few times. But they'll get other drivers as well,
like they'll just be like super regular on the app.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
A surprised how often people eat Uber?

Speaker 3 (11:13):
I yeah, in a way that I used to use
it a lot myself. Yeah, okay, it's pretty it gets
pretty like convenient, but it does make your wallet kind
of empty.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
So do you still use it and you're still ordering
food on Uber yourself? Are you?

Speaker 3 (11:37):
No?

Speaker 1 (11:38):
No?

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Well that's a good thing, isn't it. I suppose?

Speaker 3 (11:41):
Yeah, earning all the money back, love you to.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
Talk, thanks so much?

Speaker 3 (11:45):
So is it?

Speaker 2 (11:46):
It's Marcus? Welcome, good evening?

Speaker 4 (11:48):
Oh hi the Marcus A different topics but to your
tast cap true.

Speaker 1 (11:55):
Yes, yes, they sit on TV and I cannot believe it.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
Where you can find them, which of the country, where
they grow in great detail? And I just think that's
absolutely shocking that they would do that.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Do you think do you think there's do you think
there's closet poisoners out there desperate to off someone and
going and get them?

Speaker 4 (12:23):
Absolutely?

Speaker 2 (12:25):
Like her?

Speaker 4 (12:26):
Not so much?

Speaker 3 (12:27):
What did you call them?

Speaker 4 (12:29):
They're not so much hidden? And anyway, I won't go
into details, but.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Please go to who's going to be? Please go to
please go into details. Who do you think is going
to be poisoning people?

Speaker 3 (12:42):
Well?

Speaker 4 (12:42):
There morons and there's hundreds of them waiting for some
sort of tip off of how they can cause trouble. No,
I think it's absolutely.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
Who are the morons? Don't talking like anarchists?

Speaker 4 (12:59):
Well, I just call them morons.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
No, I don't know. I don't because I mean I
think anyone's always if you just get on into that
and go deathcat mushrooms, New Zealand websites will come up
where you can go and get them. Really yeah, oh yeah,
well that's that's that's how Aaron Petterson got them. She
just googled them.

Speaker 4 (13:22):
Really yeah. Well, I just find it frightening. It's terrifying
to me, and it's just another thing for me to
worry about.

Speaker 2 (13:36):
But most most people aren't trying to poison people.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
No, that's a normal and how many normal people are there?

Speaker 2 (13:46):
But most that most people have got guns anyway, you know.
I mean if you're guns, yes, guns, firearms most people, well,
I mean we've got a huge number of firearms in
this country. If you're looking to kill someone, there's probably
things a lot more available and easier than death kept.

(14:08):
I mean when you look at it, logically, wouldn't you agree?
So is it.

Speaker 4 (14:13):
Logically? Well, morons aren't logical, aren't they. Let's face it,
And there's too many running about and I just, oh,
it's just shocking. I just it's just another thing for
me to be traumatized.

Speaker 2 (14:29):
I don't think you should be traumatized. But I can't
work out your trauma because I can't work out why
you'd be working. Because no one's going to poison you.

Speaker 4 (14:36):
Oh aren't they? They already hit are there?

Speaker 2 (14:42):
Well it's de clear, okay, Yeah?

Speaker 4 (14:46):
What was to details that the police are involved with death?

Speaker 2 (14:50):
Kept mushrooms?

Speaker 4 (14:52):
No other things?

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Oh, I've said to hear that is it recently?

Speaker 4 (14:58):
Yeah? You know if you open your cupboards and you
look at all your bottles of oil, different cooking oils,
and it is and that sort of thing, and hello,
all the lids are being taken off, no sign of them.
Why why has somebody come and done that at my home?

Speaker 2 (15:22):
I can't I can't answer that.

Speaker 4 (15:24):
No, Well, this is reality markers, but.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
No one's going to put no one realize no one's
going to poison you by If you're going to poison
someone with their oils, you'd put the lids back onto
to hide suspicion, wouldn't you. I mean, if you think
about it, logically, they're not.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
They're not sensible or logical enough in their brains to
do something put the lid back on.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
You do sound like you've got yourself so that you
do sound like you've got yourself in a bit of
a bit of a worried space. What can you do
to get out of that?

Speaker 4 (15:58):
Well, I'm trying to pick a country where it's safe.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
What had What have you come up with?

Speaker 4 (16:06):
Oh? Nothing?

Speaker 2 (16:09):
Okay? You keep us posted when outside to my day
