It be.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
You're trusted nighttime Talk Marcus Slush Knights Call eight hundred
and eighty to eighty News Talks.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
It be when outside to the day glins winner even
more they maybe time it saams time far wor.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
One never won rior. Because I away.

Speaker 5 (00:56):
By your side, good evening and welcome seven past eight.
My name is Marcus Hittel, Midnight tonight. I hope things
are good where you are. I hope you are not
too wet. Obviously it's a fairy big weather instant happening
in Dunedin and the eastern part of Otago. If you've

(01:20):
got any updates from what's happening with you, I dole
us know. I'll be doing covering that right throughout the
next three hours fifty three with with a bit of
everything actually, as far as road announcements and weather announcements
and sand begging announcements. I know that the Aneedan Council
has quite upset that people have been out there boogie
boarding or boogie boarding. I suppose we should say down
the River of Leith and things out that they're saying
that is dangerous. I don't have any housing flooding it

(01:43):
in south indeed, and they have been sand begging. So
if we have got people there, particularly before it gets dark,
be good to hear from you. There are a number
of road closures, a large number of road closures. So yeah,
I'll keep you updated with that if you are. They're
actually been quite serious to telling people they shouldn't leave home,

(02:05):
that you shoul be out in your car, and you
if you're in, even if you're on an essential service
or a driver, you've got a writing update for us.
Let us know. Even some of the footage I've seen
of the Otago Peninsua looks like it's sketchy as all
get out. So a lot of flooding, a lot of
surface flooding, a lot of rivers flowing across roads and
stuff like that. That's surface flooding, I suppose. So here

(02:26):
got updates for us? Do let us know? Eight hundred
eighty ten eightyan nine two nine to de text. It
would be good to hear from you if there's the information.
If it's of interest to you, it will be of
interest to other people also. So I'll go fully big
on this tonight. So if you've got something to tell us,
let us know, feel free to come through power. And
if also you're out of power or stuff like that,

(02:47):
we can do what we can to get you information
for that. If there's riding information, we'll bring that stuff
to you people. So yeah, there we go eight past
or eight past eight. The number is eight hundred and
eighty ten eightyan nine two nine to the text. So
any updates on the weather, I think it's important, and
I think that people around the country would like to
know what's going on there. But certainly there seems to
be flooding on most roads, and there's trees. Certainly a

(03:11):
lot of trees down state Hiway won all over the show.
So if you are going somewhere, you might have trouble
getting there. There's warnings everywhere. The road is closed between
ki Burn and Hyde. For those that don't know that,
that's probably on your last day on the rail trail.
You're coming down there towards Rock and Pillar. I know
also to by the way, I can tell you that

(03:34):
there's boil water notices a lot of places also because
of I don't know what happens. I guess there's contaminated
water gets into people's water systems, so I think o
macaw omerco over those sorts of places. There's boiled water
notices too. So I intend to keep people up to
date tonight with what's going on. So if you have
got some information, let us know, so text it through

(03:54):
or call it through. Very keen to get people updated
with what's going on tonight. I think they say that
the weather is going to get worse. It's going to
keep raining right until tomorrow. Also too, once the tide
is high, things will become further affected also. But Dunedin

(04:16):
residents are urged to stay at home as heavy rainfall continues.
It's a very unusual event. One hundred and fifty milimeters
of rain forecast to fall during thirty four hours. They're
also taking a dim view of people that are oh,
boogie you. I've told you about the boogie boarding in the river,

(04:38):
so don't do that. They say that's dangerous. I guess
the last thing they want to be doing is out
looking for someone that goes missing. But I think it's
pretty standard for the students to try boogie boarding down
that water of Leith. Strange name for a river, I've
always thought. But if you have any updates too. I
haven't heard many reports about Balcluther either, but anywhere around

(04:59):
that area. So it's absolutely bucketing down that whole south
part of the South Island. From a line, if you
take a line from Wamaru through the Alexander across the
to Atapri, that whole bottom triangle, it's raining cats and
dogs and roads are now closed because of flooding. Yeah,

(05:19):
that's the situation forecast for that part. Rain heavy at times,
significant falls around East Otago, easing late tomorrow. So it's
certainly settling in. I don't know how well. I don't
know how well the sand begging is going. Surface flooding
is affecting roads around the Tapanui area. As the Pomahaka

(05:41):
River in South Otago continues to ride a rise. The
roads around Kelso will be closed by eight pm. It's
possible the Pomahaka rising will affects State Haway ninety also
may cause surface flooding between Tapanui and we Kuiki don't

(06:01):
travel issue must Six Otaga regional counter river states are
currently in flood. Palmerharketkluther, Silverstream, Mill Creek, Leith and Lindsay's streams.
By the way, I know where the silver streamers that
comes through where the Funny Folk Festival is. You might
have experienced that, and that's the one that affects Mosgules.
I don't know how Mosgule's going because you've got the

(06:23):
Taedi coming down and you've got the silver stream coming down.
This could be like what happened with the Great to
Need an Airport flood when that was underwater for six
weeks or so. Anyway, Hi, royots Marcus, thanks for calling.

Speaker 6 (06:37):
Good evening, Kay Marcus, how are you doing there? Mate?

Speaker 5 (06:41):
Let me put both my headphones on. Really good things.

Speaker 7 (06:43):
Roy.

Speaker 5 (06:43):
What's the update? What can you tell me?

Speaker 6 (06:46):
Okay, well, I'm just getting into christ Church now. I'm
tying a big trailer and I left from Queenstown so
the Lindus Pass was closed and so I've had to
come by the Pigwoot and I was probably one of
the last pequals through just so much water coming down there.
There was water over the roads. It's quite bad actually.

Speaker 5 (07:09):
So you the pig route that was after ky Bourn,
after between there and Palmerston that there was water coming
over the road. Okay, so Ranfredy wed have burned around.
There was all fine, and then it started getting a
bit sketchy coming down into Palmerston, is that right?

Speaker 8 (07:26):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (07:26):
Yeah, early through it's quite bad.

Speaker 5 (07:30):
Much traffic on the road.

Speaker 6 (07:34):
Actually not too bad, not too bad. I just don't
think people would realized until it was too late.

Speaker 5 (07:39):
Okay, as bucketing down the whole way.

Speaker 6 (07:42):
So we're coming and going. But I just think there's
just been torrents of raining up in the hills and
it's just coming down and burst in the streams.

Speaker 5 (07:50):
Sure, many trees down. It's not really a treesy area.
It's quite a sort of untreesy area. So okay, no
washouts or anything like.

Speaker 6 (07:58):
That, No, nothing like That's more streams first in their
banks and coming out over the roads.

Speaker 5 (08:05):
Okay. And from Star how I won from Palmerston North.
That was all good.

Speaker 6 (08:09):
Yeah, that was pretty good. Yeah, not too bad.

Speaker 5 (08:12):
Yeah, I think they're actually that the iron is they've
just opened the linders.

Speaker 6 (08:18):
Yeah, it's difficult.

Speaker 5 (08:21):
So because that's an extra two hours for you, was it?
Yeah it would be, wouldn't it?

Speaker 6 (08:24):
Tell me about it? Yeah, it's been a long drive.
I'm looking forward to getting home.

Speaker 5 (08:28):
What are you doing with the what are you doing
with the caravan?

Speaker 7 (08:31):
It's not a caravan.

Speaker 6 (08:32):
I've got a tend and boxed body trailer. Oh okay,
I'm a technical rep and I've been doing training with
our teams in Queenstown.

Speaker 5 (08:41):
Okay, nice update, Roy, appreciate that, thank you. Fifteen past eight.
There we go. Not if we get the pig root mentioned,
but when the linders is closed, you get on the
pig route. The number is eight hundred and eighty for
traffic updates, whether updates, anything, updates, as far as all
that goes. But there will be flooding and it won't
the worst of it won't be over till tomorrow. Get
in touch, Marcus till twelve, eight hundred and eighty thirty

(09:03):
nine to nine, two deticts, but total tim covered roll
across it. I'll be covering whatever I've got for you.
Two months of rain in thirty four hours.

Speaker 9 (09:19):
Yep.

Speaker 5 (09:21):
So i't think there's aything else I need to tell
you about. People are asked to ensure their household plan,
emergency supplies and get away kits are prepared and advise
for reasons to keep away from low lying flood prone areas,
not to drive through any flood area, act quickly to
self evacuate if you see rising water and be ready
for power and communically communication communications outages. We encourage people

(09:43):
to keep up to date through Emergency Management Otago Facebook
page and website. So yeah, it seems to be Facebook
works really well for these things. That's what I'm on
and there's fully good updates here on that also too.
Otago's Civil Defense and emergency Management. That's where I'm getting
most of my information from. But if you've got updates
to do, let us know what's happening. Tapanui Poma. That's

(10:06):
the big river that's flooding at the moment. It will
continue to rise, continue to cause surface flooding between taps
and why Quique. That's what I've got for you at
this stage. Numbers eight hundred and eighty ten eighty. It
says avoid Otago roads tonight exclamation mark unless you absolutely
have to, Please avoid travel areas of concern from or

(10:29):
cot Ottaga. Original Council modelings so far show that people
should be particularly weary of rising waters on the Silver
Stream at Gordon Road, on the edge of Mosgle Township
of Balcluther, and the Pomahaka and coastal communities around the
Toco Mari Toco Mario area and move your stock and

(10:54):
silver Stream forecast a peak at one twenty q mex
spoil over to the right on Gordon Street bridge. Bearing
in mind to the last time it's heavy river, someone
tried to drive through the road there near Fuddy Flat
and the passenger was killed in the car. So I imagine
that's a timely reminder. Don't go joy riding in those
conditions and be remindful of that. I've got a text

(11:17):
from Brendan infed an email. Marcus just got some sandbags
from Saint Clair. The flooding on the roads there is
terrible already. I had to backtrack a number of times
due to the amount of water on the road. The
drains aren't coping already, and so much more rain to come.

(11:39):
For those that don't know Saint Clair, that's the low
lying flat area which is almost at sea level and
they do worry about the drains and stuff too, and
during the high tide that the water can't get out,
So that will be an area to watch. Good luck, Brendan.
If there's anything you need from us, let us know
we're doing what we can or we will do what

(12:01):
we can to keep people updated but that's a good information.
Thank you, Stephen. Marcus. Good evening.

Speaker 10 (12:06):
Good evening there, Marcus. Look at steal here. I'd just
like to talk about how teenagers filled in their weekends
in New Zealand in the nineteen fifties when New Zealand
had the reputation of suggesting tourists don't visit Auckland because

(12:26):
Auckland there's nothing to do.

Speaker 5 (12:31):
Hang on, what's I'm not with you, Stephen? What's problem?
Did this call tell me how you're thinking? Works?

Speaker 7 (12:37):
Well?

Speaker 10 (12:37):
My thinking is there are several years ago in the
nineteen fifties, New Zealand had the reputation of Auckland, especially
being closed over the weekends, there's no activities, and tourists
who are advised not to visit Auckland because nothing to do.

(13:02):
Yep so us as teenage in the nineteen fifties, I
knockgrounded a group of guys that were seventeen eighteen nineteen
and we would take out Morris SATs or fourteen prefects
that's sort of think for peppercure and go into Auckland

(13:24):
City and the motorway then started at green Lane. Now
started to know to who, sorry, started to know to
who only went to Pharaoh's Green Lane. So off would
go along Great South Road for the rest of Waiam.
We would go over the Harbor Bridge and spend the

(13:45):
afternoon Attakapuna Beach. And we used to take a change
of clothes for this because the standard dress was different
to what it is today. You're only allowed at a
certain places if you're respectively dressed. And we used to

(14:05):
have a coal shower on the beach, and I'm visited
take up on a beach or only a few months
back in that cold shower or freshwater shower still there today?

Speaker 5 (14:16):
Goodness, And there must have been in a chownger hunt
to go back to that show. Hey, Stephen, I appreciate
what you're saying, but it's not quite We're on about
tonight too, and I think you've got some great stories
to say, but maybe we might maybe you might want
to call Roman on the Nostalgia Show or something. I mean,
just in terms of tonight, this kind of other thing.
We've got other sort of masters we've got to serve tonight.

(14:36):
But yeah, appreciate that, and I would like to hear
those stories sometime, maybe not time. I just try to
keep people up to date with the flooding. But thanks
for coming through. If people do have more information about
the flooding in particular and the roads, do get in touch.
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty nine two nine
two to text. Two months of rain in thirty four hours.

(14:58):
It's the highest possible weather warning. It's red, code red.
I think the weather warning system has only been around
since twenty nine, but this is the first code red.
I don't think they call it code red. I call
it code red. But you got the information about there.
Get that to us. I eight one hundred and eighty
e Teddy in nine nine to detect. Everyone seems to

(15:18):
be taking a dim view of the kayaker that came
down the River of Leith. Maybe people are in trouble
for posting that. Get in touch twenty one past eight.
You've got in the updates. Headle twelve, twenty five past
eight o'clock. Malcolm, it's Marcus.

Speaker 11 (15:33):
Good evening, Good evening, Marcus sailed the guns.

Speaker 5 (15:36):
Good thanks.

Speaker 11 (15:38):
I'm just driving home from cross Back the end of
the Deep thousand, coming from Mackie Boulders, through the Parmers
and probably drove through twenty patches of water. The deepest
was probably over a fix deep Oh wow, Okay, it
was getting herey and herey. If you're in a car,
i'd probably stick in the dark, be very very careful, yeah, because.

Speaker 5 (16:01):
It's quite easy when you go through puddles that deep
to actually for the car to actually start playing in
an the direction. I mean, you actually lose control that drive.

Speaker 11 (16:09):
And I lost control on mon Page because I couldn't
avoid it. Yeah, company the other way. But from Palmerston
South it's not too bad. I'm just going over the
hills now to the meetings. It's not too bad from
wait Away to the south. But why why can we
eat towards Marie nor Water coming across the road? So

(16:30):
that's the worst part begetting north.

Speaker 5 (16:33):
Okay, were there any police or traffic management people seem
to be on to it.

Speaker 11 (16:37):
No, none at all and there was only one footing.

Speaker 5 (16:40):
Sign okay, so which clearly indicates to me that they're
overwhelmed in these areas. They probably should close the road
to people, and that's why they're telling no one to leave,
you know, people not to go anywhere. I guess because
it is also sketchy. I hope you're still there, Malcolm,
Malcolm's just cut out, but thanks Malcolm. Nice to hear
from you. Eight hundred and eighty ten nine to de

(17:02):
text Marcus till twelve something saies the rainfalling any of
our heart relics. I think the harder lakes are full
south and said four times it's September rainfall in some places,
four times more rainfall than normal, which is pretty full on,
pretty hardcore. Eight hundred and eighty eight nine nine two

(17:23):
to text marks still twelve get in touch mirror. You've
texted the number of times, Merris. Maybe you didn't want
to want to stop. I'm getting a an incessant text,
but there you go. Keep your text coming through that
if you've got anything of interest to share. Just The
thing that probably surprises me the most is that texture

(17:44):
I've got from Saint Clair that says the flooding on
the roads in Saint Clair is terrible already. So everyone's
got any more information on those suburbs Sint Clair, Sint
kildare around there, and dneda let us know. I'd be
curious to know how it's all going. The number is
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty and nine to nine

(18:06):
to text anything else, you got to looking forward to
hearing from you, and once it comes with situation with
if there's any power cutouts and stuff, we will tell
you about that information. Also, just so you know anyway,
I wait her at eight, Teddy at nine two ninety six,
so you've got power cuts or things like that, so

(18:27):
imagine they'll be kicking in before too long. Also, and
Marcus now absolutely pouring down and a need in chairs,
So thanks for that. If you want to be a
part of it. Twenty seven past, keep your calls coming through.
Just listening to Malcolm. He's advising not to drive coming
south from Wamaru. A lot of surface flooding quite dangerous.

(18:48):
He was in a four wheel drive. His advice is
just don't just don't drive. There's no feeds. They're not
out because they're busy doing other stuff. Sandbagging are getting
touch hup ass date tony headlines.

Speaker 12 (18:57):
Please thanks, Marcus, says. Otago residents and dure a rare
deluge of rain. Emergency Management Totago Group manager Matt Ali
says they continue to monitor the situation. He says the
spillway at silver Stream at Mosgiel is expected to overtop
during the night, while rainfall in areas of South Dunedin
may overwhelm the drainage system, but they're not anticipating any

(19:19):
evacuations at this stage. Prime Minister Lukson says he's not worried.
He was outshone in a performance poll by business heavyweights.
The country's top chief executives and board chairs ranked government
ministers in The Herald's annual Mood of the Boardroom survey,
and the government is urging Kiwis to avoid the Middle
East and for those there to leave now if they can.
Israel has warned Iran will pay after firing missiles into

(19:43):
its territory after recent Dare strikes and killings of Hamas
and Hezbollah leaders. More on those stories at nine or
go to NZ Herald dot co dot nz.

Speaker 5 (19:52):
Thank you, Tony. Just trying to paint a picture of
what's going on in the South of the South and
getting the bits of information to put together. Got an
email here from Hamish Marcus. I'm stuck in the hide
trying to get to rand Furley Road is closed, heaps
of flooding and too dangerous to head back to Dunedin.

(20:14):
Planning to sleep in the car tonight. So for those
look I don't know what the flooding is there, but
I presume it's the Tayete River has come over the bank.
For those that don't know, that'll be you'll know that
from the rail trail between Hyde and ran Furley, both
railway towns. Of course. In fact, Hyde was the place

(20:37):
where the railway disaster was or the railway extant. So yeah,
so that's a situation there so and I think with
some of those South Island rivers over time too, because
you know it's the headwaters where it will be flooding
and what we're seeing now will get much worse the
next two three four hours. So that's a situation there.

(20:58):
So yeah, I presume it is the the Taydi River
that will have caused the flooding there or maybe one
of its tributaries. That would be my guests there, because
the ground seems quite sodden because it's rained so much.
The other place that they are concerned about obviously is
Mosgule with both a silver Stream river there and the

(21:20):
Taedia River coming down there also because Mosgule and that
whole flat planes has got a strong or a long
history of flooding. With the airport flood, I think that
was the eighties or the seventies when the airport was underwater.
I think it's almost below sea level. They've done a
lot of flood remediation work. There's a lot of stock
banks around Mosgle, but they'll be reconcerned that they are breached.

(21:43):
But I thought that's a very good report from Tony.
They're saying no need to or no reports of evacuations
yet or no reports of likely evacuations, So that's good
news if you've got the information for us. The number
is eight hundred and eighty ten eighty nine to nine
to detect. My name is Marcus Hddle twelve. Marcus went evening.
Marcus wife went down to Invercagol this afternoon and sea

(22:06):
things we're just getting bad. She has also booked me
a flight down on Sunday so she doesn't have to
drive back herself. So that says something about the roads,
and I will keep you updated with the roads. But
they are saying that people shouldn't be driving, but there
will be commercial drivers out there, people driving trucks and stuff.
So it does appears it's not snow. It just appears

(22:29):
to be flooding with heaps of rain. And heaps of
rivers breaching their banks also turn the plinchula around. And
Eden seems really problematic with a lot of flooding, and
a lot of photos of flooding have been posted. The
other thing is too you'll come across flooding and it
won't be marked, it won't be warned because there's probably

(22:53):
just not the people there anyway. Get in touch with
you on to twenty seven away from at nine o'clock
oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty. Keen to hear
from any one of those flat suburbs Indonnina or in Moscule,
if you are in Sint Kildas or Saint Clair or
in Moscule, just about how how much water is there
and how the flooding is Because I know and I
often wonder when I come pass through Bowcluther, because that

(23:15):
is just built on a bend in the Kluther River.
I wonder how vulnerable that is to don't want to
alarm you or anything, but you must think about it
because if the curve and the river is breached, I
know they're not saying that it's going to happen, and
I don't want to alarm you, but yeah, I mean
it's a strange place for a town, not a strange
place for town, a good place for a town, but

(23:35):
there it does come with its vulnerabilities. Twenty four to nine. Marcus.
I lived in moscowle in nineteen eighty during the during
the big flood on the Taedi River. My thoughts are
with them tonight. Please advise the rubberneckers to refrain from
driving too fast because the bowwashed from their cars runs

(23:57):
into properties and erodes their top store top soil. Stay
at home. There are qualified staff doing their best Cheese
John driving or any reports about the way they let
us know. My name is Marcus Cause imagined before long too.
The journalists have had fairy big days out there reporting.
We're probably not going to get much more reported from
what's happening. We'll just be relying on the callers to

(24:17):
let us know what the situation is, and it could
be a very fast developing story. This is the first
red warning for Otago since the met Surface started the
system in twenty nineteen, so it's a big deal. And

(24:46):
sometimes I think too in parts of the country where
there are as many journalists or reporters, we don't get
as much information as we need. So one hundred and
fifty mils of rain is expected, which is more than
double the normal October rainfall in Duned. And I think
that one cyclone the Queen's birthday with the system and all,
was about twice that. So it's a still fairly significant

(25:09):
amount of weather that's coming down. They were getting touch
eight hundred and eighty eight out nine nine two detects.
If you have got more information about that, and it'd
be good to keep people informed, particularly with it Sandburg
where those that flooding and the suburbs, the flat suburbs indeed,
and those suburbs down by the sea, I think they
are worried when the tide comes in at eight pm.

(25:32):
The following street closures indeed and have been announced due
to flooding. Oh this backs up that guy's text. These
are the roads that are closed south Dale Road, Edwin
Road between Alfred and Hillside Road. That'll be the weather
workshops are Surrey Street between Ruskin and Hillside Road, Gladstone Road,
south Old Brighton Road and Nisbitt Street. Sandbags are in

(25:58):
a high demand and Aneed and Otaga resards, so we
needs to stay off the roads with rising rivers expeded
to peak around midnight. Dunedin's civil Defense bunker has been
activated where would that be probably out of the town hall,
and sand bags are available in South and Eden Moscular
in middle March. Vehicles were seen queuing at the Dunedin

(26:18):
Ice Stadium car park for sand bags this afternoon as
it was high demand and people were urged to be patient.
Sand will continue to be available overnight at all distribution centers.
The Silver Stream near Moscular's forecast to peak at one
twenty q mex which would mean some spill over the
farmland to the right of the Gordon Street Bridge. The

(26:44):
Leith and Lindsay rivers are expected to peak below flood
thresholds should peak around midnight tonight. That's the information I've
got for you, but they are already stressing that people
should stay off the roads. Also, the rainfall will continue
until late tomorrow, says driving conditions are already challenged, particularly

(27:07):
on parts of the Otago Pinsula. People should avoid all
non essential travel tonight. The weather system is also coming
in from the east, which we know from past experience
can call flood cause flooding in parts of Dunedin. When
the weather system stalls and heavy rain continues in one location.
So I think we've seen the sort of situation before.
That's the information I've got for your twenty way for

(27:28):
one oh by the way through this other stuff you
want to talk to me about tonight too, I don't
worry about that. We are all for that. If you've
got something else you do want to talk about, So
eight hundred eighty ten eighty and nine two nine two
de text mark is still twelve get in touch. Some
of the other news you might want to mention, Well,
there's all manner of stuff tonight that you might want
to talk about. Yeah, no shortage of stuff tonight, So

(27:52):
do get in touch if there's something else you want
to mention. Eight hundred eighty ten eighty and nine two
nine tu to text. So you've got more information, but
mainly we our focusing on the situation in Donedan ins
This is out too, which I thought was pretty amazing.
Some of the information out from the census more than

(28:15):
three quarters of people now live in the North Island,
which I thought was pretty significant. And there's other takeouts
from that also that you might feel that you want
to mention. Just trying to find the good summation of that.

(28:36):
But yeah, and I think probably we saw as we expected.
The fastest growing area of the country is Rolliston. I
thinks six percent growth. It might be larger than that.
Auckland has this country's lowest hone ownership rate. No surprises there.

(29:03):
More than half of your inners have no religion. I
thought it be less or more have no if you
know what I mean. I thought people would be less
churchy than they made out, So that was interesting. Thirty
one percent of households reported having a landline, compared with

(29:24):
sixty two percent at the time of the twenty eighteen census.
So when five years landline ownership is halved, the Chatnam
Islands are the only area where landline use remains high
seventy three percent. They can't have fiber. Two thirds of
homes have a heat pump, so DVS has done well

(29:54):
was forty seven percent, and twenty eighteen found that reinteresting.
Losing our religion. Half of the New Zealand have no
intellet no religion. Most people have internet acces nine to ten.
Lowest internet rate was Buller on the West Coast and Ruapehu,

(30:19):
So yeah, it's interesting what's happening there. Median income of
work in New Zealand is forty one thousand. Thirty percent
of New Zealand is born overseas. The major one of
those is England four point two percent of the total
population are English, China two point nine percent, India two

(30:43):
point nine percent, more than two hundred thousand speakers of
today and one in six people work from home. And
Sin's twenty thirteen. The rate of smoking is halved seven
point seven percent compared with fifteen percent ten years ago.

(31:04):
That's fantastic, that is halved. It's unbelievable. Well done everyone,
So yep, that's a situation anyway. You might want to
comment on that too. Oh, eight hundred and eighty seventy
sixteen away from nine so it's only the floods, but
there'll be other bits will put around that also too.

(31:24):
My major focus tonight is keep people up to date
with what's happening, just in case it's fast develop peal.
There's the information I need to get out to people.
I am here for that. You might have questions also
that you need to know. There is no talk of
evacuations yet. It seems the major concern is that people
are worried that people shouldn't be on the roads. Someone says,

(31:50):
what if a tidal wave hits Bluff. Now it's Riverton
that's exposed to tidal waves. Bluff sheltered because of the
Bluff hill. Marcus. Did everyone have to flood census because
me and my mother never got anything this year. Wasn't
it online? I think was online this year. I filled
it in. Someone says, it makes you wonder how accurate

(32:13):
the census was. I know about thirty people like me
who never filled it out. Oh yeah, well there's always
you know, there's always bargins of era. Good evening, Marcus.
I am in Saint Clair, westav has a little water
in the gutter. My backyard is now covered in water.

(32:35):
Thank you for your updates. That's from Joanne. So yeah,
it seems to be. And that's the thing the situation
I think with Saint Clair and Sint Kilda, those suburbs
on the flat near the beaches in Dunedin, when the
tides high, they worry because the suburbs are so low
that the water can't flow to the sea effectively, so

(32:55):
it might back up. I think there was some floods
here about ten years ago that caused quite a few problems.
Someone might have some more background information for me. If
they have got that, get that to me, if you can, oh,
eight hundred and eighty ten. I'm here till midnight tonight,
looking forward to what you've got to say. Fourteen to nine.
Now here we go, Here we go. What I've got
people to say? Marcus smoking halved is great? But what

(33:15):
are the stats on vaping? Your good point? Janet? To
the guys, he didn't get the centers last year? No
one did? It was this year? Was last year? Or
to the guys, he didn't get the sentence this year,
no one did? It was last year? Thank you, Marc's
I've witnessed this a few times but didn't take any
notice until day two. People in two different supermarkets took
a loaf of bread off the rack and counted how

(33:37):
many slices in the bag? So, how many slices does
a standard loaf of bread? Supposed to have? Never knew
this was a thing. Well, why would you count them?
Because I thought they were going to transfer some slices.
Halfway through that text, I thought they were going to
transfer some slices to another loaf? Would there be twenty?

(34:05):
Would there be someone might want to do a quick
count for me. I'll be curious to know how many
slice of the average lofe of bread you got some
information about that would be great. We talk about the sensors,
landlines and cell phones and religion. Other religion would be
about twenty percent, not just under fifty. Also to the flooding,
I you've got any updates at all. I'm scanning all

(34:26):
the papers and everything for you for any information, so
you're not going to be wondering what the situation is
because I'm doing everything i can to bring that to you.
So if anyone's got information to add, I'd love to
hear from you, get in touch, text it through, or
phone it through. But people are being told to stay

(34:49):
off the roads. That's the most important information I think
we've got because the roads from that guy traveling down
from Maamuru said, they really are bad, like really really
a lot of surface flooding and it's not monitored. Also,
so you could get yourself in trouble and you would
want to bring the emergency service out for assistance because
they're probably busy doing the other stuff. I'm just trying

(35:12):
singing what information I've got for you. Every website does
live blogs now, but they can kind of varying quality.
That's the trouble. Never quite sure if they're done on
people on the ground or people from an office miles away.
The latest from Met Service a slow moving front is

(35:32):
expected to bring heavy rain to the southeast until Friday.
The duration and the amount are very unusual and major
impactor like impact a likely for North Otago, Dunedin and
coastal Kluth. A WED warning is a red warning is
in force seventy millimeters to one hundred milimeters of rain
on top of what already has fallen, with the heaviest

(35:53):
falls about the Eastern Hills peak rates of fifteen millimeters
per hour.

Speaker 13 (35:59):
No.

Speaker 5 (35:59):
The amount of the amount of duration of rain is
highly unusual for this area and may cause major impact
threat to life from dangerous river conditions, Significant flooding and slips.
Conditions will disrupt travel, make some roads impassable and isolate communities.
Do not ender flood waters and avoid travel. Act quickly
to self evacuate if you see rising water. Be ready

(36:22):
for power and communication outages. This was issued at eight
twenty six and for the Inland Cluther in Southland their
rain watch warning. There is a yellow. Periods of heavy
rain amounts may approach warning criterion possibly exceed them. About
the western range of Southland moderate chance of upgrading to

(36:43):
a warning and the rest of North Islands all fine
cancelations for the rain warning for the Bay of Plentyo
to for the Bay of plenty Gisbon, for the Bay
of Plentiero too and Gisbon the strong windwatch has all
gone to yellow. So that's the information for you. I've
got shots of Forbury Road in Dunedin and it looks

(37:05):
like there's a but it looks like there's two feet
of water. Unbelievable images. So the water's right across the
road at Forbury Road. I don't know that's water coming
down off the hills or whatever there, but that's a situation.
So yeah. And Duneda now has four private weather station

(37:30):
rain gages have shown over one hundred millimeters of rain
for the day so far, with several others approaching the milestone.
So I don't know if you've got your own private
rain gage. That's interesting. I guess they must be connected
to the internet. For private weather station rain gages over
one hundred mills for the day so far, So that's

(37:52):
the information I've got few so absolutely raining, that's all happening,
and the harbor is brown, and there's water everywhere, and
the Portabello Road seems to be almost passible. That's information
for you. Seven away from nine o'clock. If you do
want to come through, be nice to hear from you. Oh,

(38:19):
the news said, lest people suffer from acne these days,
I have noticed this. Thanks for that, Marcus. The Senses
has shown over one hundred thousand dwellings reported empty. You
what an outrage that is? Someone says six sixteen slices

(38:42):
and a loaf. Someone said three lights, three less slices
and a loaf, as loaves are now smaller, Marcus. Last
night a man rang about a scam that he had
received from bloom Hearing. He rang one one one report.

(39:02):
The letter said, police confund it was a scam. I've
just seen her put on Facebook from Blue Boom Hearing
about hijacked records and warning people to be aware. Apparently
bloom Hearings having his own clinics too, PEPs. He needs
to read his letter again. Don't fully know what that means, Marcus.

Speaker 9 (39:21):
You are right.

Speaker 5 (39:21):
The last bad flood was twenty fifteen. A lot on Google.
I am worried for a lot of people live out there.
I think this one could be worse. It's absolutely hosing down.
Thanks for the update, chairs Joy Bread thirteen in quality
bakers Toast seventeen in Copeland's twenty including the crust and
the loaf I just took out of the freezer. Thank
you for that, Marcus. I buy the cheapest bread from

(39:47):
Pack and Save. I can get nine sandwiches per toast
sliced loafe, which includes using the two crusts, and I
always get one spare single slice of bread, so a
total of nineteen for a sick thick slice Pack and
Save loaf. Standard toast loaf is fourteen slices plus crusts. Rather,
it'd be more Toast Life seventeen slices, two crust, sandwich

(40:12):
twenty one and two crusts. No need to count. It's
good information for me. Oh, eight hundred eighty ten eighty
and nine nine two detect if you've got an update
to be good to hear from you, Yeah, so give
us a whole eight hundred eighty ten eighty and I'll
do what I can to get you the information. Although,
of course, once it gets dark people don't have as

(40:33):
much information because they're not out there looking at what's
going on. But it's very much that Deneen residents have
been told to stay home amid a heavy rain warning
and there's major washouts and rivers, crossing roads and road
closures are happening. I've got about four live scrolling updates

(40:54):
of what's happening and I'm just bring that information to you.
Josephine Street, Flag Star, Fuddy Flat Road, South Dale Road,
Edwin's Road, Hillside Road, Surrey Road and Old Brighton Road
have been closed. I think the Fuddy Flat Road one
is the where there was the fatal extent last time
it flooded. There's fords there and someone went into the

(41:16):
ford and the passenger was kill. That just happened several
years ago during the floods. So that's the information I've
got for you. There is flooding in Tapanui and the
kai Burn Road between Kyburn and Hyde that is closed.
I've got one list to he's there stuck sleeping in
his car. And the Otago Council website that shows the

(41:41):
river levels is down and cannot be checked at the
moment from Noels. That's bad if there is if the
gears sketching out Marcus state Hiwai one still open between
christ Church and Herbert. I'll check and someone thinks they
should bring back the thick and thin loaf. I think
that was my prediction for this year. Actually actually back

(42:04):
after the news people, I'll be keeping you informed. If
you've got more information for me, phone that through eight
hundred eighty ten eighty and nine two nine two detext
get in touch with it till twelve. So wo there's
no noises for you?

Speaker 7 (42:20):
Who talking?

Speaker 5 (42:21):
The census also one hundred thousand empty homes. That's a
failure of something, isn't it.

Speaker 1 (42:31):
You're trusted night time talk Marcus slash nights call eight
hundred eighty ten eighty News Talk City.

Speaker 3 (42:37):
When whoa outside to move the two alansena even more then?

Speaker 4 (42:53):
Maybe time the same time far one level on the
ry cause, iay.

Speaker 5 (43:13):
Bye chairs seven pass nine by the way from the
texts so in Dneda, there's a crash on the southbound
lane of Lookout Point on the south side of the hill.
Now I don't know where that is, but I presume

(43:34):
that's coming out of Needing south towards Moscole Lookout point
if anyone's got any more information about that. But yeah,
I think most of my work tonight's too about keeping
people advised about what's happening in Otago. If you've got
any more information, get in touch with us. I'll do
the same thing. If I've got any information for you,
I'll bring that to you. So there's an extent on
the motorway lookout point of just bring up the map

(43:56):
to work exactly out where that is. Stay with me, people,
it's just taking a while to come up there. I'm
taking looking forward to information. Yeah, lookout point. Okay, that's
the situation, so that the road south out of Dunedin.
So we're seeing accidents now, that's why they're telling people
to stay at home. Just to give you a bit
of an update what I've learned in the last hour.
We've got one lister that's asleep in his car and

(44:18):
Hide because the road between Kiburn and Hide or Hide
and Ran fairly is closed. Someone's just driven down from
Wamru to Duned and they've said this surface flooding all
over the show. He's in a four wheel drive. He's
advising not to drive. It's dangerous. We've spoken to people.
Some person since killed and went for to get some sandbags,

(44:39):
and there is flooding everywhere. And that's the information I've
got for If you've got more information, get that through
to us. Oh, eight hundred and eighty ten eighty nine
nine two de text. Also we talk about the census
to tonight to one hundred thousand homes are empty. Now
I'm already getting information that says, oh, well, the census

(45:01):
is rigged, it's not accurate. Well, it's the best we've got,
and we need that sort of information, so people should
fill it in properly. And people when we get that
informational so we should believe it. I reckon, because they
do tests to make sure it's fairly accurate. There's statisticians
involved with it. They're not idiots. So Marcus, the house

(45:22):
next to mine was empty at the last census. Marcus,
are we that hard up that we're counting bread slices?
That's alarming? Yes, people are. And the weird thing is, though,
because I think the bread the number of slices and
a loaf of bread there'd be the same weight per
loaf would just be how thick they're sliced. But yes,
apparently people are counting slices and loaves to work out

(45:45):
how many there are. I can't work out why they
don't just put the number of slices on the pack,
or why people aren't buying the unsliced loafe and slicing it. Finally, anyway,
I don't know this stuff, but all the lines are free.
Be nice to hear from you. There might be something
different you want to talk about. We're on to bread, slices,
ghost houses, and the flooding in Dunedin, Oh eight hundred
and eighty nine. If there is something else you want

(46:08):
to talk about, be my guest. Marcus Josh here, I'm
about to leave Gore to go to Milton to seem enough.
The roads are flooding it or closed, Josh, I can look.
I can look, Josh, to see what I've got for you.
I think you're probably going to be okay, although it's
ill advised. If anyone's driven Milton to Gore recently, let

(46:30):
me know. Guess it depends what sort of car you've got.
They are telling people to stay off the roads, though.
Let me just check up on the walk at Guitar
he site. It seems fine to me. There's no flood
warnings on that part. I reckon be okay, it doesn't
get sketched until around Moscule and from their north and

(46:51):
from the high road. Oh eight hundred and eighty tidy
and nine two nine to it text Marcus till twelve.

Speaker 7 (46:55):
What have you got?

Speaker 5 (46:56):
Let's hear from your people. My name is Marcus Hurdle.
Twelve more live updates from Dunedin residents urged to head
home and stay home. It's a situation and looking forward
to your calls tonight. I've got more information. There is
flooding in Dunedin's northeast valley. That's new news. Flooding in

(47:19):
Dunedin's northeast valley. That's more information I've just got through.
And more information too about the ki Burned to Hyde
Road closed for flooding. And the rain radar shows the
whole of that south of the South Island is in
a sea of rain. So that's the information for you.

(47:41):
Eight hundred eighty nine two detects and a number of
streets in low lying South and Eden have been cordoned
off as surface flooding intos properties. Emergency services have attended
several homes threatened by rising waters on Forbury Road, covers

(48:02):
from drains have enforced open by the sheer volume of water.
While rain continues to fall, Passing vehicles are also causing
major issues, leaving to raves of water impacting properties. So
fairly dramatic shots of flooding on Forbury Road in Dunedin.
And I'm looking at some of those images also too,

(48:23):
So that's a situation there.

Speaker 2 (48:24):
Here we go.

Speaker 5 (48:25):
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty nine. Text get
in touch if you want to. It'd be good to
hear from you. This is the Dunedin's first ever read
weather warning. But they and there's reports to have a
crash on the most way south of Dunedin on Lookout Hill.

(48:47):
So you got some more information about there, let us
know Text that through or call that through. Also talking
about the census, I'm pretty sure the census was an
online one, Marcus. They could be counting a number of
slices of breeders. They are making sandwiches for catering function
and wanted you know how many loaves to buy, Marcus.
We are driving around in south dun Eden and can

(49:09):
report Great King Street and Ranker Street well underwater being
at s Marcus, good evening and welcome you're going.

Speaker 2 (49:17):
Marc's just caught you on the censor starter. I don't
need it because I've I know a lot of people
that own like Airbnb houses and they're not counter there's
been you know, someone living in them because it's a
it's the airbnb, and a lot of them have just
changed the airbnb recently, so you know, since covid to

(49:40):
make a few extra bucks and stuff. So yeah, I
think based on that, it's not really accurate.

Speaker 5 (49:46):
So based on you talking to a few of your friends,
the centers is not accurate. Can you hear that, friends, Ben?
Can you hear how that sounds?

Speaker 14 (49:56):
Yeah?

Speaker 10 (49:56):
Well, no, just been.

Speaker 2 (49:58):
What I'm saying is empty houses, right described, there's been
fooled by someone living there. Now someone's not living there
and it's just needed out as a Airbnb. This class
has been empty because no one's living in the So.

Speaker 5 (50:11):
Yeah, well it is an empty house because otherwise there'd
be someone would have been there on census night, wouldn't there.

Speaker 2 (50:18):
Well, and there someone's actually physically living there full time,
as are empty interwelling so.

Speaker 7 (50:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (50:26):
So and there's a lot of places that are gone
to here B and B recently. So that's what I'm saying.
Just because there's one hundred thousand empty houses doesn't mean
they're actually empty all the time.

Speaker 5 (50:36):
Maybe there is that also.

Speaker 10 (50:40):
Oh that's all I was going to say.

Speaker 5 (50:41):
Anyway, Yeah, but I mean maybe there's one hundred thousand
empty houses also. I mean that's the thing that and
that would be a concern. And I mean they do
check the statistics. They do try and make sure do
sampling and things to make sure they're accurate reflection. Don't
just send it all out and think O, this is that.
There are kind of checks and balances to make sure

(51:02):
it's correct. That's why it costs so much money. Marcus
bread packets usually say serving slice e g. Two slices,
and then how many servings per packet? Current packet my
home Freyer's brand has nine servings sixteen slices, and trusts
sawn it's Marcus good, evening good.

Speaker 15 (51:23):
Even the census last time was in my mind, a
total waste of money and time, because I've actually done
over my lifetime five different censuses and it was a
good job. And the only way they do it properly

(51:43):
is for the person on the ground to do it
person to person and that empires equally in the urban
area as well as a country area.

Speaker 5 (51:58):
Yeah, but there are people, but Sean, I mean, with
all respect, there are people who are experts on working
out the accuracy and the robustness of surveys. This is
a really kind of studied area of academia. People know
what to do and how to make sure they're this
is not idiot hour, you know. They so we can also,

(52:19):
I mean, the sensors come out. There's a whole of
figures there, and they're interesting figures about religion, about population,
stuff like that. They'll plan the new hospitals and the
new schools on that data, and we can have some
great discussions around that, or we can just say the
information is all wrong.

Speaker 15 (52:38):
Yes I should that too, but they're still you won't
shake my belief and person to person is the only
sensible way to do the job.

Speaker 5 (52:49):
Thank you. And you can go back and see they
do retrospective analysis on how accurate the senses are. You
can see that they work out the accuracy and it's
a very robust discussion.

Speaker 1 (53:07):
They have on that.

Speaker 5 (53:07):
It's all on the internet and they've got reports on
how accurate it is. I'm including ninety seven point nine
percent for a responses, so they are all sorts of
checks on that stuff. But you know, I think the

(53:28):
more interesting information is where the people are moving, about
the people that don't own houses, about the people without landlines,
all that sort of stuff. But you can just say, oh, well,
it's not accurate anyway. They should send us a number
of slices and a loaf of bread. Eighteen past nine,

(53:49):
keep your calls coming through eight hundred and eighty ten eighty.
Seems from the footage I'm getting from the reporter out
and about in Duneda that there is a lot of flooding.
So it seems as though the drains are overpowered. Man

(54:10):
holes are they called still called manholes? Don't know if
they're called manholes? Are they what are they called person holes?
They are being blowing open and things like that. There's
also going to be high tied later on tonight, which
is going to cause more drama. But properties have been
cordoned off and there was heavy flooding and Forberry Road,

(54:30):
so yeah, it's looking pretty sketchy. There's also been an
extent coming out of Dunedin and apparently by all accounts
of driving additions is shocking so be aware of that.
Janet's Marcus. Good evening and welcome hi.

Speaker 16 (54:43):
There, Marcus. Gosh what you just said then about the
man holes. I remember and haunted by this man up
an Auckland that was walking along in the flood water,
and I think it was about up to his knees.

Speaker 17 (54:58):
Really.

Speaker 16 (54:59):
He said he was checking all the houses to make
sure people were safe, and he was filming himself on
his phone, and then suddenly he disappeared down a man hole.
He got the fuck down and drowned and ended up
in the drain. Goodness, that filled me with horror. So
when you said that, please people, if you even walking

(55:24):
in the floodwater.

Speaker 5 (55:27):
Jen, why would you be well, he was exactly. I
think why would people? But no one should be out,
No one should be out and about in Nita's not
necessary getting sandbags.

Speaker 16 (55:37):
That's true.

Speaker 5 (55:38):
There'd be my tape this whole.

Speaker 16 (55:40):
Whether things start up north are how are they up north?

Speaker 5 (55:46):
I'll tell you what, Jen, I'll look into that. But
I think what's happened up north is there but a
few power cuts and coromandel. Apart from that, it's been
thankfully largely left alone. So yeah, it didn't seem to
eventuate too much bit of a thunderstorm and Auckland last night.
It seems to be fine today. I woke up this
morning and checked the paper. Not too much damage, but
nice to hear from your twenty past nine, eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty. Just going through the blogs to

(56:09):
see what's happening in Duned and also the heralds reporting
south of Eden residents on Forbury Road rushing to sandbag
a house with rising floodwater. So they are caught unawearz
with this. There is carlight zebnues to highlight them. There's
a people knee deep in water carrying white sandbags to
protect their houses. This is in Forbury Road, so that's
happening as we speak. That's the situation there. There is

(56:33):
a heavy rain warning until nine pm tomorrow night, so
no doubt tomorrow night we might be talking about the
same thing. They're also asking the students to not go
walk about. They're worried about that. They're saying it's super dumb.
The kayakers that took on the water of Leith, that's
the river with the strange name that runs through dened University.
One person described the actions as disappointing, but not at

(56:54):
all surprising. They look like fairly good kayakers to me. Wamadou.
The rainfall sixty four millimeters. The monthly total is thirty
so the third day of October and they've already had
twice the annual for this time, or twice what that
expect at this time of the year. That's some of

(57:16):
the information I've got for you. Some other information for you,
if you've got information, to phone that through. It just
seems to be peaking. That's my pick. Much report of
the flooding in Forbury. Emergency services have attended several homes
threatened by rising waters on Febury Road. Covers from drains

(57:41):
have enforced open by the sheer volume of water. While
heavy rain continues to fall, Passing vehicles are causing major issues,
leading to waves of water impacting properties. That's more information
for you. They're asking students to stay home. Well, I
guess you're young and you want to get out and about,
don't you. But yeah, because that whole part of the

(58:03):
Northeast Valleys also seems to be flooding too. Situation there.
If you've got more information, get in touch with us.
Twenty three past nine I'm just going through all the
different websites and their live blogs of what they've got
and also Facebook pages. DUNED and Civil Defense Bunker has

(58:28):
been activated and sandbags have been made available overnight, a
distribution center in South and Eden, Moscule and Middle March.
There's six rivers that have also been currently monitored. That's
more information for you too. I think Moscule and the
Silver Stream they were worried about, but they think it's

(58:48):
not going to breach the banks now because if Moscule
and the airport have been sites of big floods previously.
Just flicking between the blogs people for you. So I've
got all the websites and all the information. A Kluther

(59:14):
District councilor is urging people to avoid rubbernecking and staying
out of the floodwaters. Met Service has issued a rare
red level heavy rain warning for northo Target and Eating
Coastal Kluther. The councilors are propartial emergency operations setd TOM
monitor the potential impact the Bruce Wards Gain or Finch Shed.
People must stay home as going out and about as

(59:35):
dangerous and cause more work for contractors and the mirror
of Dunedin, says Civil Defense staff for doing everything they
can to keep the city's stormwater system under control. Mark
Mitchell fluted need in this afternoon to work alongside local authorities.
Mayor Duels raed it shed. The rain is now at
its heaviest. I've found the staff of recalm and looking

(59:57):
after things as they can. They can't stop the rain.
All pumps are running, all systems are flowing. The danger
point is where more water comes out of the sky
that we can get get rid of. He's urging residents
to avoid roads and stay indoors. That's the latest go
around for I'll do that hourly to give you the
latest updates for information that I've got for you. So

(01:00:21):
that's what I've got. That's what I can tell you.

Speaker 3 (01:00:23):
Now.

Speaker 5 (01:00:24):
I'll just check the Facebook page for Otago Emergency Services.
We're also talking about how many loaves of bread, how
many slice and a loaf of bread and how many
slice the loaf of bread and the census. It's a
bit like TV viewership and political polls. People always say

(01:00:46):
they're wrong and started to rather than actually talk about
what's on them. I guess that's human nature. Maybe it's
just put it down to that. So the Otago Civil
Defense and Emergency Management their latest post. Here's the latest
forecast for Met Service. We are still under a WED
warning until nine pm tomorrow. Please continue to avoid a
necessary travel instaut of floodwaters. Never try to walk, swim,

(01:01:06):
or drive through floodwater. Put safety first, don't take any chances,
act quickly or self evacuate the forecast that's just come out.
Expect seventy to one hundred mills of rain on top
of what already has fallen. Heaviest falls around the Eastern
Hills peak rates of fifteen millimeters per hour. No, the

(01:01:29):
amountain duration of rain is highly unusual. This area may
cause major impacts. Do into floodwaters and avoid travel, act
quickly to self evacuate. If you see rising water. There
you go. That's the latest I've got for you. If
you want to talk eight hundred and eighty had if
you want to text nine to nine too, and the

(01:01:51):
census and number oh anything on the Chatham Islands because
they're in it too, the weather or the census. Get
in touch. My name's Marcus. Welcome head twelve away, one
hundred eighty ten eighty past nine tony headlines.

Speaker 12 (01:02:14):
Please thanks Marcus. Met Services Warning there could still be
severe flooding as downpaurs drench Otago. A number of rivers
are expected to peek at around midnight. A Red heavy
rain warning is in place for North Otago, Dunedin and
coastal Kluther are with that'll be until nine tomorrow nights.
Up to one hundred and fifty millimeters of rain is
expected in the next twenty four hours. Health New Zealand

(01:02:38):
warns its deficit for the past financial year is likely
to be close to a billion dollars. The organization has
released its numbers for the quarter ending June, and New
Zealand and its Pacific neighbors will train and be deployed
together in a new Pacific Response Group. The security arrangement
has been agreed by Defense Minister Judith Collins and ministers
from Australia, Fiji, France, Jenne Tonga and Papua New Guinea.

(01:03:02):
We'll have more on those stories at ten or check
out endz at Herald dot Co dot enz.

Speaker 5 (01:03:06):
So much total twenty nine to ten or the updates
when I've got them. The good thing is that power
is still fine, so yeah, if there's a power update
to power out, power cutouts or road closures. I'll be
giving you all the information you need about that. So
being incredibly vigilant about that. They are ordering people to
head home and stay home in Dunedin and not do

(01:03:28):
unnecessary journeys. One hundred mills of rain is expected until
nine pm tomorrow on top of what's already fallen. That's
the latest update. The roads around Kelso will be closed
as the Pomerhaka River continues to rise. So you wouldn't
be wanted driving around Tapanui anywhere like that because it

(01:03:49):
looks like that river is rising. Your David's Marcus good evening.

Speaker 13 (01:03:54):
Hello, how are you good?

Speaker 6 (01:03:55):
Dave?

Speaker 14 (01:03:56):
Real good?

Speaker 13 (01:03:59):
What Marcus are? You're talking about census And I'm thinking to.

Speaker 18 (01:04:03):
Myself, Will, it's a really really good thing. It's a
really good thing, but it's a really really silly thing
because our government, our government only has basically a three
year term and a census. When you have that, the
census every four years, yes, And so I'm thinking to myself,

(01:04:26):
when somebody comes into the government, when it changes hands
and goes into a new government, that's their incentive to
see what the people want. And it doesn't seem to
happen because.

Speaker 5 (01:04:46):
Hang on the census every five years, okay, but it's
very different. For the point of the point of the sense,
the sense is just get information about population and things
like that, so they know how many schools to build,
where to build the schools, where to build the hospitals,
where the people lead, where the people live, and what
services a different communities need. That's the whole point of it.

(01:05:09):
It's very different. It's very separate from what a government
needs to do and what they mandate from the people.

Speaker 13 (01:05:15):
Is it.

Speaker 5 (01:05:15):
That's quite a different thing.

Speaker 13 (01:05:18):
Yeah, I understand that. You sort of still think to yourself,
you know that the government is not long enough to
implement what the people are asking. If you can understand
what I'm saying, you know, so, I don't know. It's
sort it bewildered me away.

Speaker 5 (01:05:37):
Bit okay, well, enjoy, you'll be wildered. Be happy with
you'll be wilderment. But the sense is very different from
the election. And I think census data is always they've
got I mean, they get the census, but then they
kind of can corroborate that and tweak that. They've got
the arrivals at the airports, they've got the birth, they've
got death, they can get on that other data and

(01:05:58):
they can actually then put that through different processes to
get even more accurate situations. They can find the growth
and the popular and things like that. I think it's
all very interesting. Get in touch. My name is Marcus Huddle,
twelve o'clock and also too if you've got any updates
from Otago or Southland. I find that very interesting. You've

(01:06:21):
got some more information for us about the flooding. But yeah,
classic situation. Now it's dark. It seems as though the
flooding has really kicked in the rain and dned. It's
very heavy currently and it's now a situation. We're moving
around south to Eden is quite difficult because of road closures.

(01:06:43):
So if you haven't got sand bags already, it might
be difficult to keep and protect your property. But they
are recommending people not to drive around the roads because
in front of the car comes a bow wave that
goes into people's properties. You have been alerted about that
and that's been backed up by what people are saying
this hour, So just be aware of that. So residents

(01:07:09):
and have been asked to stay home. They're calling an
exceptional situation, but also talking about the CENTSUS one hundred
thousand ghost homes homes with no one in them. Less
than half of people in the country are churchy. Smoking's
halved in the last ten years from fifteen percent to
seven percent for every good thing, which shows that a

(01:07:32):
smoke free country could be achievable. When you're half and
half again, then they're just the social pariahs. Only a
third of homes have a landline. Found that really surprising.

Speaker 2 (01:07:46):
A third.

Speaker 5 (01:07:49):
You want to want this to have a phone directory?
To be honest, have we got a landline? Yes, most
often used when someone's in the bath. As far as
outside people calling us, it never happens. Got it during
COVID pointless. I'm just trying to think if we've had

(01:08:13):
a got interesting call on our landline.

Speaker 6 (01:08:14):
Never?

Speaker 5 (01:08:18):
Never. In fact, I can't remember the number, and it's
only four digits because bluff is two one two, then
there's four digits. Marcus, what do people boast they never
filled in a census form while others prostrated us wrong?

(01:08:38):
Are there many empty houses because the owners have a
serious concern of bad renters? In reality of senses a
good thing and provides good data for the qualified academics
to make intelligent decisions. Cheers John. I think most countries
have censuses, and I think the census has had a
bad rap from the Bible. I can't remember the senses
in the Bible was a good thing or a bad thing.

Speaker 9 (01:09:01):
I know that.

Speaker 5 (01:09:03):
The baby was born in the manger because they had
to go there for the census, or they were avoiding
the census. I can't remember the details you might want to. Yeah,
I can't remember what happened why they were going in
the main je. It was something to do with the census.

(01:09:26):
And I think there is probably a fair and totalitarian
regimes that data from censuses can be used against people.
I think that has happened historically. I don't think it's
happened in New Zealand's time, but yeah, from a talk

(01:09:48):
back point of view, once the census is happening, everyone
screams blue murder that it's not going to be accurate,
or they haven't been reports such and such and such,
that they haven't come out of their house or whatever.
And then once the results come out, everyone says, oh,
it's not accurate because I didn't fill it in. It's
a bit the same when people say political poll is

(01:10:10):
not accurate because they themselves weren't poled anyway enough for
me twenty two to ten catching a bit, so I'm
following Southern Scoop a journalist in Dunedin, Hamish McNelly. He's
just posted on Facebook eleven minutes ago, getting pretty bad
out here. Multiple streets cordoned off, rising flood water and

(01:10:34):
the rain is as heavy as it's been all day.
He's posted four videos. One is of a water spout
in the middle of a road. That water is gushing
out about a meter high. There's a lot of four
wheel drive cars on the road, far too many cars
on the road. There's water in the gut are about

(01:10:55):
five hundred mills high. Looks like chaos. That's the first video.
Second video bit more of the same, but yeah, it's
looking bad. There seems to be emergency services out there
trying to put cones up to stop people going into premises,
but it looks like it's really just kicking on at

(01:11:17):
the moment. Looks like it's really come to a situation
where it's getting it's getting fairy serious, getting pretty bad
out there. That's by a seasoned reporter, so you don't
even really in the middle of it. The moment if
you've got any more information about that. It looks to me,
just looking at those videos that are posted that sand
begging too late for sand begging because the water would

(01:11:38):
be higher than any sand begging would allow. So that's
the latest information that I have for you. Are in
Zena reporting that people living on Surrey Street in South
Dunedin have been asked to evacuate. Duned and Civil Defense
and Emergency Management says they want people on Surrey Street

(01:12:00):
to leave due to flooding. So that's the first report
I've seen of flooding, of evacuation. I've seen road closures.
That's the first report so off flooding. I don't know
Surrey Street. I will look up where that is and
see if I can bring some information to you about that.
I'm not seeing yet where people should be evacuated too.

(01:12:24):
As I'm saying, this has just come from another news source,
it's not from official channels. A Surrey Street goes parallel
to Forbury Street. It's one of those streets that goes oh, well,
you know the racetrack. It's kind of in between that.
It's in between that and the motorway, so it's in

(01:12:45):
the flat of Dunedin. That's a situation there. So that's
the middle of that flat part of the South of
Eden flat suburbs. Yeah, Graham, it's Marcus. Good evening here.

Speaker 7 (01:13:01):
Hi. Yeah, I'm right on the hot spot and I
can port that the trains are holding up quite well.
I've just been out about half an hour ago and
checked on my neighbors and my housing court flats and
they're all safe and sound. And you're talking about Lookout

(01:13:22):
Point that's near the fire station that looks overlook Concord
and b inside. I was out this morning out at
Duke Road and I got to see for myself the
Selver Stream was actually level with the road at ten
o'clock this morning.

Speaker 5 (01:13:39):
Okay, so I'm just going to fire a few questions
at you. We're about are you killed us?

Speaker 9 (01:13:45):
And clear.

Speaker 7 (01:13:47):
I'm actually killed her probably on on Bayview Road. I'm
a meter and a half below. Men said they're all
in about four hundred meters from the Pacific Ocean.

Speaker 5 (01:14:00):
All that whole area. Because we're looking at Surrey Road, now, Bnovacco,
that's like you, that's a flat situation. So the reason
they would be flooded because there'd be a malfunction of
their drainage system there. How does draining working there? If
it's below sea level? Is it pumped upwards? Is that
what happens?

Speaker 7 (01:14:16):
Well, it drains down and the seawater can't get into it.
There's a big pumping or the muss pumping station, of course.
And there's also a secondary area on port A Bello.
Is it road or something?

Speaker 5 (01:14:35):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (01:14:36):
Sure, And yeah it's good to hear that the silver
stream might go over the floodbanks. But about midday that
she had two hours later after I was there, and
actually dropped down half a meter in two hours.

Speaker 5 (01:14:54):
With a lot more rainfall to come.

Speaker 7 (01:14:57):
Yeah, it was. It hasn't stopped bucketing down all day,
all day since well before sunrise. And it's just gon
getting both of the moment. I've got one of the
trains just outside my front gate that's backfield and is
about shin deep in water. But I can get out

(01:15:18):
another way and might have immense evacuation plans to get
my neighbors out if I have to.

Speaker 5 (01:15:25):
Okay, Graham, I'm just going to Graham apologize. I'm just
going to pause you there for a minute. Okay, I'm
just seeing now from Civil Defense they have said it
will shortly issue more advice on where Surrey Street residents
can go. Now back to you, Graham, have you been
sand begging? Are your neighbors sand begging? Is anyone sandburging?

Speaker 2 (01:15:43):
No?

Speaker 7 (01:15:44):
No, it's been Sanburg. I don't see anything. I was
also out in South ed seven o'clox to night chaking
on my ham Radios club, which is about three blocks.
My local MP is that thing with Larry. She's only
a few hundred meters away, oy and she's all safe.

Speaker 5 (01:16:03):
Should should shouldn't you radio hams be kicking in now?

Speaker 7 (01:16:08):
No, we haven't been sent for We're just on standby.

Speaker 5 (01:16:12):
So who se does civil defense scend for you?

Speaker 7 (01:16:16):
We'll several defense on the police see Amateur radio Emergency
calls AARC. That's what we're part of. And we've been
sending some tests transmissions up and down the bottom half
of the south ND of tests that ready comms is.

Speaker 5 (01:16:30):
Okay, So you're going to go.

Speaker 7 (01:16:32):
I'm all good to go, yep, And there'll be a
long night, but I'm not expecting to have to evacuate.
But I understand there are some hot spots out there,
and you've mentioned a few of them. And ran Kayla Street.
But we'll just cross that bridge when we come to it.

Speaker 5 (01:16:47):
If you okay, well, I your neighbors are, I'll find
that you've checked on.

Speaker 7 (01:16:53):
Well, all the neighbors have kicked on. We're all okay,
and none is any danger where I am. But I
understand that there are some girls and drains that have
been backfilling. But basically everything's holding up. And I think
what Mere Reddick has said in the last era of
pretty much in order, and I think we don't need

(01:17:14):
any rubber nickers out there. We don't need any more
village idiots than what they're already out there. So basically,
stay indoors and only self evacuated the absolutely have to.

Speaker 5 (01:17:24):
That's here for me, Graham, Thank you, Marcus. Oh, here
we go. I've just got some gram and there's some
more information here that's just come through.

Speaker 7 (01:17:34):
Yes, sure, go ahead.

Speaker 5 (01:17:35):
Queen's Drive Saint Kilda as well underwater over a meter deep.
The beach hotel is closed. Can you give us a
bit of a background.

Speaker 2 (01:17:42):
Or on that.

Speaker 8 (01:17:43):
I know where it is.

Speaker 7 (01:17:44):
Yeah, that's down the very far end of South and Eden.
You turn right to go to the Victoria Road. Queen's here,
I know over the areas here. Yeah, there are some
areas that are polling and it can't be helped. But

(01:18:05):
I think situation will be a lot worse than what
it already is. We'll see when we get through passing
midnight if things get really bad.

Speaker 5 (01:18:16):
Because Queen's Drive is actually a road down from by
Mornington Park.

Speaker 7 (01:18:21):
Oh, there's several Queens strives.

Speaker 5 (01:18:24):
Okay, okay, appreciate that. Okay, another TEXTI thanks Graham. I
appreciate your intel. Our Marcus home, Marcus, our son lives
in a flat on Leaf Street and the need and
close to Leaf River. We total to be ready for evacuation.
Packers closed decks and give us in cases to get
up quickly. We just rang him and his mates are
on the diesel having a party. Struth, it's frustrating being
a student parent. Well, they probably won't say that, but

(01:18:47):
if in doubt drink, I mean that's their way, that's
their way of coping the River's that wat Shall we
do Bear's ease?

Speaker 7 (01:18:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (01:18:57):
I don't fully know what to do, but look, I'm
sure they'll be fine. At least they're not rubbernecking. Least
where staying at home? What's the figure what was the
order during the COVID we I forget what that state
home expression was. Anyway, A ten to ten. My name
is Marcus Well. So I've got the four live blogs

(01:19:18):
up now to get all the information I can for you.
The latest Stuff've got people living in the kilometer long
road in south to Needen called Surrey Street. I've been
asked to evacuate their homes to Needn Civil offense emergencies
have told them. Aren said they want people on Surrey
Street to leave due to flooding. There is no word
where they're going to evacuate. Two. I would have thought

(01:19:39):
that they would have had the evacuations seen to their
marked and publicized a long time ago. So I think
that's an era in their comms. But anyway, that's a situation.
If you've got more information about the floods to get
in touch eight hundred and eighty to eighty nine nine
two detext. So yeah, the snapshot is that it's looking
at its progressing and becoming worse. So just because it's dark,

(01:20:08):
that's not out of the woods. There is a number
of situations. The road between ran fairly sorry between Kyburn
and Hide has closed due to flooding and I spoke
to a caller before who's sleeping in their car they
can't get through. I spoke to a caller driving south

(01:20:28):
from Wamadu to Dunedin. He said he would advise driving.
He was in a four wheel drive car or ute
and going through quite a bit of flooding and was
in the verge of losing control and said it'll be
an advised to do any driving at this stage. So
the shots of South Dunedin, Saint Kilda, Saint clear, massive

(01:20:53):
amounts of water on the streets loc almost right across
the streets and manhole covers are blowing and there are
guys as of water on those streets as the drainage
can't cope or the amount of water that's they are
using the city. So that's the situation. If there's more
information that you've got, let us know. And as I say,

(01:21:16):
I've got all the blogs up to bring you any
information where that happens. But the latest update is that
Surrey Street residents are evacuating. Management says they want people
to leave due to the flooding. In a Facebook post,
Otago Civil Defense and Emergency Management said there's plenty of

(01:21:38):
rain still to come, and the region remains under a
WED heavy rain warning until nine pm tomorrow night, so
it's till twenty three hours to go on this weather system.
Highly unusual with a huge amount of rain. I'm getting

(01:21:59):
no more information about the situation with Surrey Street, but
if there's anyone there, and that's I think probably suburb
to call, that would be Kevisham, So thanks that caller.
It's Kevisham. Also too. Getting around northern south and is problematic.
I think Tapanui Kelso around that area because of the
Pomahaka River, Jarell, Twisty Attorney River. That one starts at

(01:22:24):
one place, almost ends back where it started, but dumps
on the Kluther and that's flooded a number of places
too famously flooded to it right out of the town
called Kelso in the seventies I think was a railway
town that's gone. So that's yeah, that's flooded number of
times over the years. So they will have warnings and
things insightful that one. But it's five away from ten.

(01:22:44):
If you've got the information, phone that through. Hi Ennit's Marcus.
Good evening and welcome.

Speaker 19 (01:22:50):
Yeah, I got a phone call this afternoon alone. Yes,
and I got the soham call from House, New Zealand. Yeah,
obviously they obviously they were going around checking up on
people who are living alone.

Speaker 5 (01:23:07):
Well, that's reassuring. Whereabouts are you in?

Speaker 8 (01:23:10):
I'm Port Charmers, okay, and you should be fine.

Speaker 5 (01:23:14):
You should be Port Charmers should But it seems like
the other side of the peninsular is where the road
washed out. Port Charmers should be fine, should it.

Speaker 19 (01:23:20):
I know I've got the main trunk line behind me. Okay,
lookie walker bag.

Speaker 5 (01:23:27):
So what's that going to do?

Speaker 7 (01:23:29):
Ah?

Speaker 19 (01:23:30):
Well, up up to the part last flood, I've always
had somewhere up there have been a great overflow of
water and it comes down and it floods around the
back of my house.

Speaker 5 (01:23:47):
It seems all right tonight.

Speaker 19 (01:23:49):
It seems all right so far. And in the past
I've been out there with her with a broom sweeping
water away.

Speaker 5 (01:24:00):
So we're about to put where the railway comes around.
And then are you because it comes around Kirie's babe
before it tucks into the hill, doesn't it.

Speaker 18 (01:24:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 19 (01:24:09):
I mean Carry's Bay.

Speaker 5 (01:24:10):
Oh okay, copy, Yeah, I mean Carry's Bay.

Speaker 19 (01:24:15):
There's railways A few years Ago Kibi Rail. I don't
know the ki rail. They did a relaying of the
trek up there, yes, and after that, well up to
now it's as good a goal. With the plague here,
ray was just uh, just water coming down everywhere.

Speaker 5 (01:24:39):
Well imagine too, they are saying it's the inland hills,
so imagine there's a huge amount of running on those
hills in North Harbor. I mean there could be stuff
that happens to you, couldn't they Yeah, yeah, yeah, Okay.
How's it looking the mumper? Is there any surfer's flooding
at all?

Speaker 6 (01:24:54):
No?

Speaker 19 (01:24:57):
No, As I say, we're on the hill above the
Fisherman's wharf and I'm on the hill above the Fisherman's
wharf at Carrie's Bay. But that's, as I say, I'm
quite happy it's not as bad because, as I say,
there's nothing worse than sanny oving. That's when the hard
rooms sweeping water away.

Speaker 5 (01:25:18):
And get me right, it's not raining, is it? That's
about It's not it's not blowing, is it.

Speaker 19 (01:25:23):
It's not blowing?

Speaker 5 (01:25:24):
No, Yeah, that's a savior. Nice to talk. Take care
and thank you for calling. Oh eight one hundred and
eighty eighty team coverage of the weather. You've got any
more information, text or phone that through Hit'll twelve, You're.

Speaker 1 (01:25:40):
Trusted Nighttime Talk Marcus lash Night's call eight hundred and
eighty eight News Talk said.

Speaker 4 (01:25:46):
Who outside the two even more than maybe time.

Speaker 13 (01:26:08):
Scene.

Speaker 4 (01:26:08):
Zi'm far.

Speaker 11 (01:26:14):
On the.

Speaker 4 (01:26:16):
Rio causiay by side.

Speaker 5 (01:26:27):
So primarily tonight the focus is on the situation in
Dunedin and keeping people informed. I have got a later
development and I don't unfortunately, with the situation with all
sorts of information coming from multiple sources, I don't actually
know where this has been sourced from, but I'm going

(01:26:47):
to read it to you anyway. It's been posted on
the update on the Stuff website by the reporter of
Sam Smith. It's from posted six minutes ago. South Dunedian
residents are being encouraged to self evacuate. Residents and low
lying parts of the city, particularly in else to need
in their cavisham. I would encourage to self evacuate to

(01:27:10):
higher ground as surface flooding in and around Surrey Street
continues to rise. They should first and foremost go to
nearby friends or family homes in higher ground. But an
evacuation center has been established at the Saint Clair Golf
Club twenty Isidori Road for those that do not have

(01:27:30):
an alternative accommodation to go to civil offense ConTroll of.
Scott Maclain says the continued rainfall has created pooling and
surface flooding in particularly low lying areas in and around
Surrey Street and Caversham, and residents there can voluntarily evacuate
to higher ground if they want. We have received numerous

(01:27:52):
reports of drains backing up. Unfortunately, there is little we
can do until the rain stops, so we are ask
anyone that notices rising water or flooding to self evacuate
to higher ground if they feel the need. The Saint
Clair Golf Club is been set up as an evacuation
point for those who don't feel safe at their own place,
or don't have friends or firmly they can stay with.

(01:28:15):
There's plenty of parking and pets are allowed. Red Cross
volunteers will be there to provide assistance. There has been
a landslide between Kiri's Bay and Deborah Bay, which is
covering half of the Aramajuana Road. That's the guy we're
just talking before the news. He's in that neck of

(01:28:36):
the woods and he said it was risky Kiri's Bay,
so just along from him there has been a slip
the colvit at the bottom of Harbor Terrace and Aramajuana
Road at Kiri's Bay is blocked and there are significant
flooding across the road, so people should stay home or
in a safe location and avoid traveling. There is also

(01:28:57):
surface flooding on Peninsula Road and around Hoopers and Papaoui Inlets.
For those that are evacuating at some import to take
care and drive to the conditions. There has been significant
rainfall and they may be unseen surface flooding that's difficult
to see, especially now that it is night. Sandbags are
still available at the Ice Stadium South Andeed Moscular middle March.

(01:29:20):
There has been a high demand for sandbags at Victoria
Road in South n Eden, so we're asking people to
be patient. Now that seems like a highly formulated press release.
I don't know where that's come from, That's come from
council comms, or where that's come from. That's posted. That's
the last thing I've got. So people are now being
encouraged to self evacuate. Now I'm seeing this reported on

(01:29:44):
all the websites now, so I think we can take
that has been factual. I just don't know where the
press release has come from. But that's a statement from
the Civil Defense controllist Scott McLean, and all the websites
are reporting that verbatim. So that's the situation there. It's

(01:30:04):
just been posted one minute ago. So that's the latest information.
And if you are there in South indeed have got
an update, let me know. Oh eight hundred eighty ten
eighty and nine two nine two to text. I see
the heralds reporting that also to they're probably report it
at the same time. Anyway, I just not wat sure

(01:30:24):
where that's come from, but they are asking people to
self evacuate, and the evacuation point is a Sinclair golf club.
Is a is a door? Is a dory? Is a
dory road? It could be Isadore road. I apologize for
fumbling that pronunciation. So that's a situation there. Oh eight
hundred eighty thirty and nine two nine two de text.

(01:30:46):
If you've got the information yourself, let us know, get
in touch or text me. Oh eight hundred eighty Teddy
or nine two nine two Marcus. Massive flooding along Forbury Road, Dunedin.
Not sure why police haven't closed the roads washed from
the car as flooding homes. Look, I don't know why
they haven't flooded. From what I can tell though talking

(01:31:06):
to people in the previous hours, I think the police
are probably pretty busy. There's road closures, all sorts of things.
I think probably the the services are stretched. I think
that's probably why they're asking people to stay at home
because I can't be out there actor. And from the
shots I've seen posted by Southern Scoop, there's a lot

(01:31:27):
of seems to be the cars going along Forbury Park
are all big four wheel drive double cab mutes that
would create a febit of wash. So I don't know
what that's about. But if you've got more information that
you can actually and also to Inland and up in
the Maniotato or upper north of there, let us know.

(01:31:52):
Zach has emailed High Marcus, Duned and civil defenses behind
the eight ball. They spent the day telling everyone there
was no need to leave and did not say where
to go. A big lack of communication, that's from Zach. Look,
I don't know what's gone on with comps. For me,
the first thing would be to set up a evacuation
just in case you need it. The fact they're setting
up one now is surprising to me. You do that beforehand,

(01:32:14):
wouldn't you, Because Dunedin South Adeen always floods in situations
like this because it's so low lying. So yeah, I
do think that's a failure. I'm not quite sure what.
Maybe they've lost to drop the ball with the worries
about the hospital.

Speaker 2 (01:32:29):
But.

Speaker 5 (01:32:32):
Now I guess I don't want to alarm people, get
them falsely worried about evacuation. But this was always going
to be on the cards with this sort of heavy rainfall.
But if you've got more information, phone it through eight
hundred and eighty eight ten eighty and nine to nine
to just to clarify. Sint Clear Golf Club that is
the evacuation center And if you want to talk on

(01:32:52):
here about this or anything else, the cens is also
eight hundred eighty thirty nine two nine two de text
and the Saint Clear Golf Course is on the hill.
I believe it's up on the hill above Saint Clair.
I know that because it's we end up when you
get the bus. The bus turns around there, doesn't it.
I remember that well, I'm i HEIKOI on the bus.

(01:33:14):
I think it's up Middleton Roadway. Remember that quite clearly.
Now if you want to be a part of the
show eight hundred and eighty ten, if you've got the
other information, be nice to hear from you. If you
are in derned and South End, if you want some information,
I've got some information to tell us, be in touch.
But Surrey Road that's the one there, Aveco and that's
in Caversham that goes right along almost from Forbury Park

(01:33:34):
right along to almost the motorway near Carasbrook. And that's
the situation there. So I guess it's more vulnerable to
water coming off the hills, but really heavy rain in
all of Dunedin or all of that part of Otago tonight.
So you get in touch eight hundred and eighty tell
if you've got anything to add or anything else you
do want to talk about, Marcus till midnight tonight to

(01:33:55):
looking forward to hearing from you our fourteen past ten.
So they are now talking evacuations, that's the latest development there.
Courage people to self evacuate to higher ground anyway, if
you've got something, if you want to talk about this
or anything else tonight and it's a bit hard to

(01:34:18):
talk about bread and the census and this all at
the same time. But we'll see how we go. Oh
eight hundred and eighty eight Teddy Knowne to de text
anything else you want to mention talk about, say, wouldn't
mind hearing from you. Getting quite hyped about the rugby
league on Sunday. I will be supporting Penrith just so
you know. I see that Gould is not going to

(01:34:42):
be calling it. He's been demoted. I don't quite know
what's going on there. Although he is sixty six. They
think he's too much of a Penrith supporter. And as
far as road closures go, Dead Rebey too. You can't
get out to Ara Majuana. There's a road closure there
also too, between Hide and Kaiburn there's a road closure there.
What seems to be going well as Moscule and all

(01:35:05):
the fl banks from Silver Streams seem to be holding.
It's something to be grateful for. But if you do
want to talk, my name is Marcus Hddle twelve. Marcus.
We are on messy av off Bayview Road. Just surface
flooding only in our direct area. The communications from Civil

(01:35:26):
Defense is useless. That's from Sam. You know, it's kind
of hard to kind of communicate with people now because
there's so many different avenues people go to. Where do
you go to go on TikTok or where do you go?
But the last post I've got from Otago's Civil Defenses
fifty five minutes ago. I think they probably need to
be communicating slightly more regularly. And I still don't know

(01:35:48):
where that people are getting that information about the evacuation from.
There might be ad Needing Council website, but I can't
see where it is. Yeah, I can't see any comms
from them the Needon City Council and he posted three
hours ago, So yeah, you kind of need a common

(01:36:08):
ground for places to go to and see that sort
of stuff. Anyway, sixteen past ten. My name is Marcus.
Welcome HIT'DLL twelve. But the people are being advised to
self evacuate the Saint Claire's Golf Club. You can take
your pets, yep, you can take your pets. I can't.

Speaker 7 (01:36:32):
I don't know what.

Speaker 5 (01:36:32):
I don't know what pets that defines. I can't take that.
The second report woo, but yeah, if you've got something
else to add, oh eight hundred and eighty twenty seventeen
past ten. They're also reporting in Doneda that there are
reports of surface flooding and also toilets bubbling up with
sewerage or sewer water in some parts of that area.

(01:36:55):
It might be because the sewer water bubbling up that
they are talking and saying that people can self evacuate
because that's not gonna be pleasant in a wet evening.
So yeah, forty milimeters of rain an hour, that's what's
coming down, threatening large swathes of the country. Driving around
the south is not good tonight. Had a guy earlier
drive down from Wamaru to Dneed and say it was terrible,

(01:37:16):
sketches all get out. So if you've got some updates
of that'd be nice to hear from you. Oh, eight
hundred and eighty ten eighty and nine to nine to
it addicts there is a landslide block the road to
to Ara Mowana. Everyone is now reporting that that's a
situation that that's just come through. So there is a
landslide on the Ara Mwana road. That's the northern or

(01:37:38):
that part of the I guess you call it the
weston would you land slide between Kirey's Bay and Debra
Bay which is covering half of Ara Mowana Road, so
that's not passable either. But if you want to talk
about this, we've got any more information for it like that,
so get in touch or you want to comment on
that also too. It's kind of hard at night time
because there's a lot of reporters out there. It's tat
to see stuff, so it's kind of hard to get

(01:37:59):
that information across. People say that a lot of postings
on social media. I haven't seen those postings, so I
don't have people seeing that on Facebook or tech took.
But we've got more information for us. If you can
disseminate that, they'd be nice to hear from you. So yeah,
let's go eight one hundred and eighty ten, eighty nine, text,
twenty past ten. Any information would be good. Trying to
keep people updated. We've got people sleeping in their cars

(01:38:21):
at Hyde that can't get through to ran Fairly Road
south of Wamada is dodgy and looking forward to information.
If you've got me, just get in touch. But just
cool if you want to go on here. We haven't
a lot of time to talk to people off here.
I know that people want to get information and part information,
it's probably best to text it. The following street closures

(01:38:43):
in Dunedin have been announced to by the Way Southdale Road,
Edwin Street, Surrey Street, Gladstone Road, south Old Brighton Road,
Nisbet Street, Josephine Street and Flagstar, Fuddy Flat Road and
Hatchery Road. Also Kyburn to Hide close due to flooding.

(01:39:04):
Alexandra to Kayburn and take care along this route due
to surface flooding. Terrace to Amadama Cylindis due to snow
and ized road uses our advised to take extra care.
By the Way, Otago Polytech has announced it its campus
Indian will be closed tomorrow. The river's expected to peak

(01:39:28):
at midnight. Just over to it just under two hours away.
That's the latest for you. The heaviest rain is falling
in the hills, but you've got sort of information on
air phone. It through eight hundred and eighty ten eighty
and nine to nine to text. There is evacuations now
and that has been reported. Also Red Cross volunteers will

(01:39:48):
be at the evacuation center to provide assistance. There has
been that landslide. They're advising people not to go out
and drive another one hundred milli of rain to expect
to fall in north otarget need in coastal Kluther before
nine tomorrow night. Stay off the road seems to be

(01:40:10):
the sage advice. Anyway, looking forward to what you've got
to say twenty three past ten tonight. My name is Marke.
Also to about a number of number of people in supermarkets,
counting the number of slices of bread and a life.
I've never heard that before. People in the census, only
a third of us have landlines. Only a third of
homes have landlines. That's surprising. Also, I can tell you

(01:40:35):
that less than half of people have a religion, and
the smoking rates have from fifteen percent to seven percent
in the last ten years. Anyway, that's some of the
state and one hundred thousand homes with no one in them,
ghost homes. Curder Mark is terrible to hear about the

(01:40:57):
weather disaster and hope the best for people there. Any
news on Larnak Castle. I think Larnak Castle will be right,
but I'm not sure those beautiful gardens be affected because
I certainly not of rain on those porthills. And they're
also advising people not to go kayaking in the rivers

(01:41:18):
because that's already happened. Also, sure twenty four past ten.
If you've got anything different that you want to talk
about to all the information about the floods, get in touch.
But yeah, that's all the information I've got for you.
I'll try and do everything to bring you all the
information when I can. But the latest news is about
the evacuation and it's just comes through about five minutes

(01:41:41):
ago and the landslide on air Mowana Road and one
News have stopped their live blog. Don't know why, but
the evacuation notices seem quite informal. They're just telling people
to self evacuate. They're not going dorker knocking, not at
the stage anyway. Twenty five past ten. There you go, people,

(01:42:03):
the lines are free. Twenty seven past ten. My name
is Marcus twelve.

Speaker 9 (01:42:06):
Hope.

Speaker 5 (01:42:06):
It's good where you are. Get in touch with this
something different you want to talk about. Feel free to
get involved. Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty nine
to nine to detect Hittle twelve. That's my promised Roman
traverse along after twelve o'clock tonight. They're asking people not
to go driving in Dnina. I'd say that's fair enough.
So yeah, just don't do that because the road does

(01:42:31):
sketches all get out. By the way, I didn't realize this.
Chris Christofferson chose a Leonard Cohen song for his epitaph
to go on his gravestone. Pretty good. Yeah, I'm not
entirely sure the lyrics are. I'll try and find that one.

(01:42:52):
Julian AND's Marcus, welcome and good evening.

Speaker 8 (01:42:55):
Hi, good evening. I was just watching a YouTube. I'm
in Auckland and Silvadel Now. I was just watching a
YouTube video of the floods. That's pretty hectic down there,
isn't it.

Speaker 7 (01:43:04):
What do you do?

Speaker 5 (01:43:05):
Just google YouTube Dunedin floods. Is it what you guys
are doing?

Speaker 8 (01:43:08):
Yeah? Yeah, And it just came out and the sky's
an aeroplane and he's filming all the floods.

Speaker 5 (01:43:18):
Is he a drone or an aeroplane?

Speaker 8 (01:43:20):
Aeroplane really goes for four minutes the video?

Speaker 5 (01:43:25):
Are you having me on?

Speaker 8 (01:43:27):
No, I'm not having you on. I'm serious, because is it?

Speaker 5 (01:43:30):
Is it a it's in daylight. It's in daylight that way.
I think it's got a lot worse since Oh yeah,
that's it's the trouble because this is daytime. That's the
trouble with TV and cameras. You're gonna film at the daytime.
At nighttime it kicks on, there's no coverage. Looks terrible.

Speaker 8 (01:43:51):
Oh wow, yeah, no, no, so yeah, It's all I
wanted to talk about tonight is my YouTube.

Speaker 5 (01:43:58):
Can you, Julian, get on TikTok, Yeah, TikTok yeah. Can
you get on TikTok and look for me what's on there.

Speaker 8 (01:44:09):
I've only got one phone on me at the moment,
so I.

Speaker 5 (01:44:12):
Yeah, once you get off, see if you get some
more information for us more because there's saying there's a
lot of posts on social media. I can't see any
of it. No, I've got too many tabs open. That's
my that's my every tab on the computer open, try
and look for new information for people. The latest is
all about the Aramauana Road land slide. That'll be cut

(01:44:32):
off forever. I think there's a high road you can
get around there though. Anyway, nice to hear from you,
Julian Hendle twelve, my name is Marcus. By the way, Canterbury,
you're still going to have pits on your buses. I
don't think that's a good thing. By the way, although
I've done it in Auckland. Everyone seems fine. But there
you go, pits on the buses and Canterbury, Wow, changing world.

(01:44:58):
I think Auckland allowed pits on buses, but I've never
seen any. But if I hold your horses, marry with
your soon half past ten tony headlines, thanks Nas Marcus.

Speaker 12 (01:45:08):
Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell is in Dunedin as it
copes with record rainfall. Emergency Management Otago is urging people
to stay off the roads as more surface flooding pulls up.
People living on Surrey Street in South Dunedin are being
encouraged to self evacuate their homes if they feel threatened.
They can go to the Saint Clair Golf Club if
they need to, and as Marcus mentioned, a landslide is

(01:45:31):
now covering half of the Aramuana Road. Finance Minister Nichola
Willis has told business heavyweights she absolutely rejects austerity. She's
addressed The Herald's annual Mood of the Boardroom event in Auckland,
where leaders ranked economic confidence at three point two out
of five, and Defense Minister Judith Collins says China featured
in round table talks with Defense partners across the South Pacific.

(01:45:53):
This week after its ballistic missile launch, Colins hosted counterparts
from Australia, Fiji, France, Chile, Tonga and Papua New Guinea
in Auckland for an annual meeting. We'll have more on
those stories at eleven or log onto ends in all
dot co dot nz.

Speaker 5 (01:46:07):
Thanks turning twenty nine to eleven. Sophie Marcus, Welcome, good evening. Hi,
Sophie's Susie Paddon.

Speaker 16 (01:46:17):
Have you heard about Hello Fish on tab.

Speaker 5 (01:46:21):
Company? Sophie, Sophie, Sorry, my friend got.

Speaker 7 (01:46:24):
One hundred ninety five dollars from Hello Fresh.

Speaker 14 (01:46:27):
Don't get Hello Fresh, Sophie, don't get Hello Fish.

Speaker 7 (01:46:30):
Hang on, Call me s Free, call me Si free.

Speaker 5 (01:46:33):
Could you just stop? Yeah? Could you spell your name please?

Speaker 17 (01:46:40):
Jesid?

Speaker 19 (01:46:41):
Why?

Speaker 5 (01:46:43):
Oh, for goodness sake.

Speaker 7 (01:46:44):
Again if you said why.

Speaker 5 (01:46:49):
Okay, Hi, Susie, I thought you were Sophie. I apologize
for that. Can we just have this conversation soup stop?
We have this conversation again.

Speaker 16 (01:46:57):
I just want everyone to get warned not to get
Hallo Fresh because my friend got scammed.

Speaker 5 (01:47:02):
Yeah, well it's not Hello Fresh. Should be someone that's
taken their details we can't malign them, Suzi. Okay, I
think I'll let you go. We say, what's all that
noise in the background.

Speaker 7 (01:47:18):
Nothing, I've got nothing in the background.

Speaker 5 (01:47:20):
Oh okay, God, he's something else.

Speaker 14 (01:47:22):
How did the static government is scamming on me?

Speaker 5 (01:47:26):
Pardon?

Speaker 7 (01:47:28):
The government might be chiling.

Speaker 5 (01:47:31):
Gone, I'll go there, okay, okay, yeah, appreciate it. So
you take care, Thank you. Twenty eight to eleven, eight
hundred and eighty text You've got texts the information too,
So they are now evacuating in South Dunedin. Marcus Emergency
Management Otaga website refers readers to the Facebook to need

(01:47:53):
in Civil Defense Emergency Management site. But the latest updated
post there was on the twenty eighth of July twenty
twenty two. It's bad, I can't And it's always the
same with comms from places like this. The blood comes
along and the informations are big as muddle. So I
don't know what that's about. The best website on Facebook

(01:48:15):
I've got is Otago's Civil Defense and Emergency Management and
they have posted fourteen minutes ago, and that's the one
that I've read. But that's something that other people are
and it says keep it close eye than the day.
The city council website and social media channels for updates overnight,
and you go to those and as you quite rightly
point out, oh no, that's actually worked out quite well.

(01:48:46):
So there's something on that site too. They've got an
update twelve minutes ago. We are aware of surface flooding
and drains backing up. We are encouraging residents of self
have equated to the same information. A wealthy series we
set up. It'simklarly golf Course for residents that don't have
a safe place to go. Bets are welcome. Aramana Road
is partially blocked. There is still significant flooding on the

(01:49:06):
Clinchla Rode around the Hoopers and Peppinoi Inlet. Sandbags continue
to be available and just don't And that's the first
update for three hours in the middle of a heavy
weather event. That's kind of surprising. A but if you've
got information, you're the best judge of that. Get it through.
Eight hundred and eighty ten eighty ed L twelve. Alter

(01:49:28):
about ghost homes, Oh no, I think actually the common
would better than maybe I've made out talk about ghost
homes and how many slices of bread and a loaf.
That's something else we can talk about. Marcus. The epitaph
for Chris is said to be like a bird on
a wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir. I

(01:49:52):
have tried in my way to be free. Of course,
it is the Leonard coed song, populated mainly by what
was that group that was huge in the eighties. The
Neville Brothers got there. If we went there, Old Latensmith
was always playing them. Anyway, that's a situation. There's not
a bad epitaph, like a bird on a wire, like

(01:50:13):
a drunken midnight choir. I have tried in my way
to be free. So that's happened. And texts about the
weather or anything else you want to ring and call about.
Oh wait, hundred and eighty eighteen eighty and nine to
nine two text hit'll twelve and I think I've done
pretty well. Keep you up to let with what's happening.

Speaker 3 (01:50:31):
Into need.

Speaker 5 (01:50:32):
But if you've got more information, because I'm sort of
information overload at the stage, there's nothing more I've got this.
There is this one website. I can see the more
information in there. No, it's just all about the evacuations.
But the video showed this quite a bit of flooding
in South d n Eden. It's looking pretty skitchy twenty
five away from eleven Catcher soon Ah twenty three to eleven.

(01:50:53):
What's happening New Zealand and people beyond and overseas and elsewhere,
all the lines are free on this wit Well, I say,
spring feels like winter. It's been a terrible spring. I know,
I go on and on about it. But South it's
had four times they're expected annual September rainfall in September

(01:51:14):
four times, and now October we've got like a month
of rainfall in a day, unbelievably wet. They always talk
about the equinox when it just rains and blows and
blows and blows, but this seems to be of stretch
too far. While we are talking about the weather in Dnedin,
if you've got any more information for us, let us
know what's going on for we're also talking about the

(01:51:35):
census that's just been released. The figures for that. A
lot of people know. I shouldn't say that not many
people are into religion. Those numbers have declined greatly, less
than fifty percent. I'm not surprised by that. I don't
know why it was kind of put out in some
form of a headline, but yeah, so a lot and

(01:52:00):
also two landlines are down to a third of homes
have land life. The other thing too, is that the
smoking numbers are way way down, so it's gone from
fifteen percent to seven percent. That's something we should all
celebrate and they should have continued that trajectory, but that

(01:52:24):
hasn't happened that way. The number of today O speakers
has grown fifteen percent two hundred thousand, and the majority
of New Zealanders are non religious, so more than a
half have no religion. It's the first time that that

(01:52:44):
figure has been greater than fifty percent. The three largest
religious groupings Christian, Hindu and Islam.

Speaker 4 (01:52:55):
There you go.

Speaker 5 (01:52:58):
Sixty percent of households own their own home compared with
sixty four percent and twenty eighteen. The small increase was
a reversal of the falling rate scene since home ownership
picked peaked in the early nineteen nineties. Auckland is the
lowest rate of home ownership fifty nine point five percent.

(01:53:23):
Wellington is the highest proportion of LGBTQ plus community. The
first time they've collected that data caused a small bit
of consternation at the time. The number of people mostly
working from home has increased by almost sixty percent between

(01:53:44):
twenty eighteen and twenty twenty three. People work mostly from
home seventeen point seven percent of people. It was eleven
percent and twenty eighteen that's gone up quite a lot.
Auckland and Wellington had the highest growth number of people
in both regions doubling working from home. Cigarette smoking is

(01:54:07):
halved since twenty eighteen. That is great news. Long may
that continue. That's the upshot of what's happening with the census.
As far as the weather, if you've got information about
that or updates, let us know. Oh eight one hundred
eighty t DY nine two nine tift anything else goes.
Could to have a chat for you. I think we've
covered most. I don't know if we're going to get
further updates between now and mid no, I hope. So

(01:54:31):
it could be good to year have you to talk
to you about some more up lates. If you are
in South to Need and have got some information for us,
It'd be nice to hear you about that. People. I'm
doing what I can to bring any information to you,
but if you can assist me with that, that would
be great. I think people are still sandbagging and they
are self evacuating. Terrible expression, self evacuated. That doesn't sounds

(01:54:54):
wrong every time I say, I think, hang on, that
doesn't sound right to self evacuate, but that is the expression.
But yeah, that's the latest I've got for you. Being
told to self evacuate from Surrey Street or Surrey Creees
or whatever it is. And a land slide out towards
Ara Mowana and flooding in Caversham, and the evacuation center

(01:55:19):
is that is the Sinclair Golf Club. And they're also
saying that there are reports of toilets flooding. So there
we go. That's what's happening tonight, eight and eighteen to eleven.
Still looking for those reports on social media with more
coverage of the flag, I can't see those yet, but

(01:55:40):
I think we're pretty much up to date with what's
going on. That's kind of my brief for tonight. But
if there's something else that you've got that's important to
let us know about, get in touch, particularly if you
are people that are in there's a lad of report
from the Met Service also it's just a map of
what's going on. Rain moving in from the est piles
up around the coastal fringe of Kluther and Otago. In

(01:56:01):
the Aramjuana road landslide, someone said there was a meteorite
going across the skyk Kinlock. If anyone saw that, let
us know. Luke said it was amazing. Thought it would
be too kind of Oh, I guess it must have
clear skies in the North Island. So thanks for that.
And yeah, if you want to talk about something else,

(01:56:21):
including the senses. No, we were waiting for the population
of Rolliston to be revealed. Everyone was quite interested about that.
I haven't seen that yet. You might have picked that
up in the reading. I didn't see that. I think
people were waiting for the senses from that to see
some of those population places that were going through the roof.

(01:56:43):
But I didn't see anything when I saw that today
had kind a bit of a dive through it. So
get in touch Marcus till twelve. Now if you just
want to say good day, if there's something else you
want to talk about, that would be great to hear
from you. You might have some other update of whether
traffic or whatever that's going on you might have some

(01:57:04):
breaking news in your neck of the woods. What else
should we talk about tonight? Scams? Maybe not school holidays.
You might take in the kids, grandkids to the movies.
What else has got your anxious or up and at them?
Or what else has the situation that's got you motivated

(01:57:27):
to call tonight? There might be something else you want
to talk about. I don't know what that is, but yeah,
feel free. We can branch it out a bit now
between now and twelve o'clock. Be good to hear from you.
Oh eight hundred eighty ten eighty nine to nine to text,
get in touch. And as I say, but if you've
got flood stuff, it's good to hear that. I'll try
and see what I can as far as the breaking

(01:57:48):
news goes, don't think it's going to be twelve o'clock
before it really kicks in in Dunedin. Now, apart from that,
I think it's about everything for me. Fourteen away from
or thirteen away from twelve. Some of the other information
I've given you, the census information, international news can'ts are

(01:58:09):
now Here's an email. Marcus left Gore earlier tonight to
drive to Milton Messing. Message you before State Highway one
is open, but there is surface flooding around the Balcluther area.
Would not recommending, would not recommend driving State Hiway Wan

(01:58:31):
through Kluther at the moment unless you have a four
wheel drive. The road is shocking. Thanks Josh, Maybe you
shouldn't have gone. That's the latest information from Josh. That's
the situation. Someone says, why hasn't the Prime Minister's Sidney
thing about the floods now? It's a good point, it's
good question. Don't know the answer there. Now Rob has

(01:58:57):
texted through who's looked at the data. He says ten
o'clock tomorrow will be worse. So I guess it's windy
dot com or something. But I'm just trying to think
we're that precious now. The preciousism was dragging the wind
and down from the northeast. But yeah, tomorrow at ten

(01:59:17):
o'clock seems to be the worst rainfall. So it's going
to be twenty four hours of this. This feels like
it's just the start. So that's why I can't believe
they haven't got the evacuations sen has worked out earlier.
But look, if you want to talk on air, it
be nice to hear from you, oh, eight hundred and
eighty teenty twelve away from eleven. The other thing I
surprised about reading today was a number of exotic parrots

(01:59:43):
that escape every day in New Zealand. Did just read
that story? Five hundred pet birds go missing each month
and they're going to form wild flocks five hundred a month,

(02:00:04):
some pretty seleck boot owners. Anyway, that's something I wouldn't
mind talking about as well. Tonight. Yeah, Barnie, it's Marcus.
Good evening and welcome. Hi Barnie, Hey brother, how are
you good?

Speaker 7 (02:00:17):
Barnie?

Speaker 5 (02:00:18):
What's up?

Speaker 17 (02:00:19):
I'd just like to say thank you for tonight my
and she lives down in Dunedin and she's been ringing
me telling me how wonderful your updates have been, so
i'd just like to pass it on and say thank
you very much.

Speaker 7 (02:00:34):
Is she going?

Speaker 18 (02:00:35):
Is she going?

Speaker 5 (02:00:35):
Okay?

Speaker 13 (02:00:37):
Yeah, yeah, she's.

Speaker 17 (02:00:38):
Doing quite fear And I actually don't know where she
lives on what streets or anything, but yeah, she's just
really really really over the moon on how you've kept
out dates coming when you found things out, very very nice.

Speaker 5 (02:00:54):
We're about see you out of a tryst here, Bunnie
I'm up.

Speaker 17 (02:00:58):
In North Island now I live and live in but
we're starting to get a rainbow on here, so yeah.

Speaker 6 (02:01:04):
It's not very nice a rain bomb.

Speaker 17 (02:01:08):
Yeah, it's sort of like the heathens open for about
twenty minutes and cause chaos and then after that everyone
is to clean up.

Speaker 5 (02:01:17):
You were supposed to be bad weather for both islands,
wasn't it, so you might you might be copying it.

Speaker 17 (02:01:22):
Too, Yeah, probably the tail end.

Speaker 5 (02:01:25):
Yeah, imagine that would be right. Yeah, which seems that
the report it seems that the reports to have kind
of slowed down a bit, but the weather hasn't slowed down,
but it seems like it's it's still fairly sketchy.

Speaker 17 (02:01:36):
Yes, yes, very much so. And those that are not
in need to stay indoors and be safe.

Speaker 5 (02:01:42):
Well, I think there were the big cars when have
got those double cab mutes, they kind of plunged through.
They cause all sorts of chaos and flooding in people's
front gardens.

Speaker 17 (02:01:49):
They just need to slow slow right down to about
two k's an hour, we stop or.

Speaker 5 (02:01:56):
Not go at all, not go out. I'm sure most
of them are just yeah, okay, thanks BARNI nice to
hear from you, Marcus, Why do people say just surface flooding?
Is it flooding on the surface is not an issue?
We're on Earth, else would the flooding be. Look, I
find it really strange all the term talk about flash
flooding and surface flooding. Yeah, I don't really understand. Isn't

(02:02:17):
flooding all the same? Isn't it just water where it
shouldn't be? I guess flash flooding happens quite quickly, Marcus,
with all the rain filling up the Hydroy lakes, I
wonder if this will bring the power prices down. They
went up quickly with recent news on how the lakes,
how low the lakes were, a couple of texts about that.

(02:02:38):
Is the rain falling in the right places to fill
the lakes for electricity? I would think it probably is.
Where was I last past the lakes. I was on
the road from Clyde to Cromwell on Sunday. It didn't
seem high or low, just seemed normal. I think see

(02:03:04):
a lot of people asking big money for houses and Clyde.
Who'd want to live below the dam? He'd be terrified.
Wouldn't you sleep with your keys in the car? We
shouldn't say that don't want to crush the property market.
But still so I always think when I'm driving through there, Hey,
how's it all going?

Speaker 7 (02:03:21):
People?

Speaker 5 (02:03:21):
You want to talk? My name as Marcus, welcome, oh
eight hundred and eighty to Teddy nineteen nine to tixs
Edi twelve. The floods and anything else and the senses
and how many slices the loaf of bread people make
it counting that which surprises me a great deal. If
you got anything else that you want to mention, good,

(02:03:42):
let's hear from you. But I think this will be
the story of tomorrow, and more so with the flooding,
because it seems as though it's going to really with
some of those rivers like silver Stream and the TAIEDI
might take it will certainly with the Taedi it might
take a while for the water to come down. So
I think moscules out of the woods jet. I hope
it is, but it has been flood prone in the
past anyway, Which are the night's flowing by?

Speaker 13 (02:04:07):
Though?

Speaker 5 (02:04:08):
I'll tell you that for nothing, And it seems as
though I'm getting less more information. Here's some more shots
of South Dunedin residents and low lying parts of the city,
particularly south and needing near Cavisham are evacuating as surface

(02:04:31):
flooding around Surrey Street continues to rise. It's created pooling
and surface flooding and particularly around low lying areas in
and around Surrey Street. And the evacuation point is the
golf course. Oh, here's some new information. Water is about
thirty centimeters deep and Hargus Crescent and residents are reporting

(02:04:56):
sewage coming up through their toilets. Well, gosh, that's when
i'd get out of town. At the Junction Cafe, the
owner is making coffee for volunteers who are full sandbags.
That's the spirit. There's new information there. We've got flooding
in Hargest Crescent, so that's some information for you. Hargus Crescent.

(02:05:19):
They're still friendly filling sandbags. I'll tell you where Hargest
Crescent is. Hargest Crescent. There's a curved road right behind
where Forbury Park was. It's just kind of almost adjacent
to Surrey Street where there also has a bit of evacuations.

(02:05:40):
There's a situation. They're obviously named after James Hargust. Good
Evening Dot it's Marcus Welcome.

Speaker 14 (02:05:46):
Marcus Hello.

Speaker 15 (02:05:50):
In the Burgen Story and unstayed loss, sandwich sliced shere's
seventeen slices of bread.

Speaker 5 (02:05:59):
Why it's always an odd number, couldn't have a close.
But sometimes it's such a lovely life.

Speaker 15 (02:06:06):
It's sometimes hard to find.

Speaker 5 (02:06:09):
Yeah, I know, you find your right one and then
you can't find it like I always like to finally
slice vogels a very thin one and then had a
lot of slicing because it was so thin. But you've
got to get your supermarket to get another wise you
can't find it. That's right, Yeah, let you carry on.
What's it called Bergin?

Speaker 14 (02:06:26):
What burgen? Soy?

Speaker 5 (02:06:29):
And yeah, no, I have that, we have that oft
and dot. I'm with you on that one. Well that
it is that makes her own bread, and I tell
what the breach he makes. It's very easy to slice
free finally, which I enjoy a great deal. If you've
got to write knife or it's good. Marcus. I'm a
key be living in rural Vietnam, retired with my Vietnam wife.

(02:06:49):
I'd like to thank you for your show. It's so informative,
very real and keeps me in touch with my homeland.
To listen to talk back show with little political bullshit
very refreshing. Thank you. It's wonderful you had to listen
to a bit of real culture from home. That means
a lot to me. Roy, Thank you for that. That's
nice to hear from you with that. Yeah, oh well
we try and do it. Have a look on Otago

(02:07:11):
weather updates. That's what we want to know. Thank you
for that.

Speaker 3 (02:07:13):
There we go.

Speaker 5 (02:07:14):
People are giving me more information O Targo weather updates.
That might be the That might be the honeypot for
what we're after. Otago weather updates. Brilliant. Why don't I
have this the beginning of the show The leath on
the rise as heavy rain continues to fall across the city.
This is a great website. We hear at ow operate

(02:07:37):
this page our own time, keep liking and sharing updates
and spread the word. This is great. So we've got
some more information here. Surface flooding is affecting roads around
the Taper New area. Oh that's the Pomerharka. They've closed
those roads around there. Silver stream is likely to overtop
across the Gordon Roads spillway from eleven pm to night

(02:07:59):
until five am tomorrow morning. Stay at home and issue
will been asked to evacuate and there's flooding on four.
This is most of stuff were up to date with.
But that's new information about the leath. The leath is
on the rise. I guess they've got these amateurs. They've
probably got kind of areas there that they've got, probably
rods and stuff that they can work that out. And

(02:08:22):
the evacuation point. If you've got sewage coming up through
your toilet or whatever is Saint Clear golf cub, you
can take your pits. Plenty of parking and pits are allowed.
I'll be chaos. I can't imagine expecting any golfers.

Speaker 2 (02:08:36):
Oh.

Speaker 5 (02:08:36):
By the way, O Tigo Politic is closed tomorrow because
of the flooding. I'm back after the break. People. My
name is Marcus. Good evening, catch your soon.

Speaker 1 (02:08:47):
Call for some after hours chat. Marcus Lush nights on
news Talk said.

Speaker 4 (02:08:54):
B outside even more there, Maybe it sames. I'm fine.

Speaker 3 (02:09:22):
One level where I because I away, Bye.

Speaker 4 (02:09:31):
SI.

Speaker 5 (02:09:35):
Welcome inn. Good evening. I'm Marcus here till twelve o'clock.
I hope things are good where you are. Gosh, I'm
speaking of it slowly, aren't I?

Speaker 2 (02:09:42):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (02:09:42):
Eight hundred and eighty eight Teddy and nine two nine
to detect. You want to come through Marcus till twelve.
Anything goes. If you've got some information for us, breaking news, whatever,
let us So obviously we are focusing on the situation
on Dunedin and Otago. Well Dunedin and Otago, I should
say they have now started evacuating people. That's a situation there.
That's the big headline. That's the takeout. Well, they haven't

(02:10:04):
really evacuate started up people are self a vacus waiting.
I guess to be really clear, that's the information there.
That's the latest I've really got from the live blogs
that people are posting. If there's any more information, I
will bring that to you. But from the postings it
appears to be the most information came through about an
hour ago. Now here we go. So I think where

(02:10:28):
I think a lot of this coverage is coming from. Right,
I think a lot of the coverage is coming from
like community Facebook pages that I can't get onto because
you've got to get approval, you know, how we all
go there those community Facebook pages which normally are about
dogs barking or sitting in Auckland, about the police helicopter,
why it's overhead? You know, all those things or what

(02:10:49):
day has been day after public holiday. But the information
that people have gleaned from social media is this. So
I'm reading now water rising in Saint Kilda. Concerned South
and need residents are posting on Facebook about their toilets
barely flushing and beginning to bubble with all the extra water.

(02:11:13):
Bayview Road, Douglas Street and McAndrew Road seem to be impacted.
So I imagine that would mean that the water systems
are not coping and the water can't drain away. So
if the toilets can't drain away, then you've got real
problems with your storm water and stuff like that. High
tides at twelve so the rain's continuing to be heavy,
So yeah, it's gonna be sketchy. I can also tell

(02:11:38):
you about the Needen road closures. Hargest Cresence at Kilda
is the latest road to be closed. Need City Council
closed the road at ten twenty four between Richardson and
Karna Streets. It follows the earlier closures of Flagstar, Fuddy
Flat Road from three Mile Hill to Silver Stream, Hatchery Road, Portobello,
Josephine Street, Caversham, Southdale Road, Ocean Grove, Edwin Street, Caversham,

(02:12:04):
Surrey Street, Caversham Gladston South between Riverside Road and Gladfield Road,
O FEDU which I don't know where it is off
the top of my heart. That's the latest information for you.
So there we are. That's what we've got. There is
a landside Aramwana on the road there, so that's the information.
That's everything for you at the stage. My name's Marcus.

(02:12:24):
Welcome if you've got more information about that. I sense
that people are going to bed, but that doesn't mean
the situation is over. I think the rain is increasing
and going to keep increasing, so it might be a
situation you wake up in the morning. This has become
an even bigger news story. They are still frantically sand begging.
The water is thirty centiment as deep in Hargest Crescent

(02:12:49):
and that's where the big sand bagging is happening. There
is an evacuation center at Sinclair Golf Club as Story Road.
And if you're a sandbag and want a coffee, you
got a Junction Cafe. Good on them. That's all the
information I've got. Eight hundred and eighty e tay and
night to nine and two to text also Alexander to

(02:13:09):
Kayburn that's almost closed in a flooding. Kay burned to
Hide closed, Terrace to Amarama Snow and Ice closed. Also
to Otago Polytechnic Dunedin campus closed tomorrow and the rivers
are expected to peek at midnight. Six river monitoring stations
in Otago and flood warning alert the Pomerharker, the Cluther

(02:13:32):
at Bealcluther, the Leith and Lindsay's streams are expected to
peak at midnight. There could be a spill over at
Gordon Road bridge at Mosgule and the Mill Creek pump
station the Lower Tahidi. That's everything that I've got for you.
If you want a text or called there's something different
you want to mention tonight too old mind a bit
of a cruisy last hour? You got some lighthearted story

(02:13:54):
for me? Or would he an it? Don't let me know,
Marcus just tuned in as Kenmuer Street closed. Haven't seen that, Marcus.
Don't use an EV and flooded streets, deep water will change,
will damage the regenerative breaking units one on each world
re expensive may right off the car, Marcus. Some people

(02:14:18):
count slice of bread if they get to a sausage sizzle.
They need to calculate their costs, Marcus. Seveneing slices must
two ends toast vogel bread. What is an SMS blast
of fountains in it and scammer red.

Speaker 7 (02:14:33):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (02:14:34):
I saw that. I saw an article. I didn't even
know what it was about, Marcus. Will you get home? Yes,
I hope. So, whether the kids out at home, there
at a Mariah sleepover or a wa nanga, they're there
for the night. So that's what they are doing. I
was up there before I went to They seem to
be happy. They get ready to go to bed. Don't
think they'll sleep. Shall they be grizzy all tomorrow? Curse

(02:14:59):
of the sleepover? It always seems a good idea to
get them afterwards. Surfers flooding is ready to storm, has
been temporarily overwhelmed. The other, much more dangerous flooding is
from rivers. Flash flooding is when a large flood plain
is suddenly deluged, usually when a river breaks its banks.

(02:15:20):
Marcus thoughts on Matt Heath joining the ZB team. It's
a good question, I was thinking before.

Speaker 16 (02:15:32):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (02:15:32):
I don't know if I've ever met Matt Heath. I'm
just trying to think before if I ever have, because
as broadcasters know each other from somewhere around the tree.
I don't think I've ever met him or Tyler. That's
my comment about that. I think I start on Monday,
and the iron is I don't think I've ever meet me.
They're working in different places and the likes it doesn't
actually often happen. We're not like in each other's pockets.

(02:15:55):
But yeah, always good to get new people coming through.

Speaker 9 (02:16:02):
There.

Speaker 5 (02:16:02):
For those that don't know, that's on the afternoon show
twelve to four, one to four or twelve to four
or something like that. Yeah, so that will be interesting.
I guess lot of people be tuning in for that,
and yeah, they'll settle. Not a great job I would
have mentioned. But all the lines are available if you
want to come through and have your say tonight. But

(02:16:22):
thanks for the texts. Feels I can ask me anything.
Session thirteen past eleven, Heitchel twelve. You've got updates from
my target let us know or particularly Dunedin. But I
don't know, why are you asking if Kim you a
street's closed road? Is that one that's vulnerable? Oh and
slices of bread and a loaf. Some on the internet

(02:16:44):
said some loaves have twenty six slices. What's that about?
Oh no, Kim, you a road wouldn't be close on
the hills, is it? Oh no, Dawn, my coc I
don't even know about that people, but I'm looking forward
to hearing from you tonight. Is oh the other information too?

(02:17:04):
That's right, I knew something else to tell you. Goodness me.
Roads slips are blocking crews from restoring powers to twenty
four customers without electricity and Cape Saunders it was cut
off at three twenty pments speak to be restored about
twelve o'clock tomorrow. That's from Aurora Power. Due to no

(02:17:28):
excess because of the slips, we cannot restore power. We apologize,
mind you. Last holidays, I drove up there, right, that's
Tiger Country up there. That's very remote, so I'm sure
they'd be hardy people that would know what to do.
They'll be that one down on the peninsula. It's quite cliffe,
quite rugged, real Tiger Country. Will surprised is twenty four customers.

(02:17:49):
They're looking at the houses on Google Maps one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
just be ten houses wouldn't theyre or maybe more. Anyway,
let's be hearing from your people. My name is Marcus.

Speaker 9 (02:18:00):
Welcome.

Speaker 5 (02:18:02):
Also, the census in one hundred thousand empty houses, which
is a worry because of your houses that people can't
live in. But the smoking rates are fantastic. In the
last five years, the number of people smoking has halved
to shame. Those initiatives are not continuing, but that's fantastic.

(02:18:24):
So well on all those people that managed to stop.
We know how hard it is. And you that didn't
manage well, keep going. Just one of those things you've
got to keep at and at and one day finally,
I'm sure you will manage it. That's my positive thoughts
for today. Fifteen past eleven slices of bread on us
with people are questions people are asking tonight. I can't remember,

(02:18:47):
but there reckon tomorrow at ten o'clock. It's going to
get the worst. That the worst it's going to be.
But jumping. My name is Marcus. Been nice to hear
from you tonight. Oh the best robs come through the best.
Whether update is ven to ski V E N t

(02:19:09):
U s K why weather maps and radar I haven't
had time to get onto that. But oh gosh, my
other cheapers. I don't know why I get endless emails
from Auckland Grammar School asking for donations. Why would I?

(02:19:32):
Might's see if I get unsubscribed to that one. There
we go while they're sitting at emails at quarter past
eleven at night. Oh wait, eighty twenty twenty six past eleven,
let's be hearing from your archestral twelve. If there's something
else you'd want to talk about, would be nice to
hear from you. So mainly I'm concerned about the people
to need in the floods. I am here for you
if you've got some information for me. Is it still

(02:19:53):
raining heavily? Are you sand begging? Are you self evacuating?
Would it be a good place to spend the night
at Saint Clair Golf Club? Would your dog be outside
or inside? All these questions you could answer, And if
there's other stuff you want to come through about number
of slices and a loaf of bread, or the census
or something entirely different. Tonight, I want to talk about

(02:20:16):
the number of escape parrots. Five hundred exotic birds escape
every month. That's six thousand a year. What do you
think about that. So all what they're doing is forming
wild herds. Herds herds flocks. Auckland Council feeds large number

(02:20:40):
of exotic birds opposing a threat to the local ecosystem.
Five hundred pets go missing each month, pet parrots, in particular,
finding their way into the wild. This person an academic
want to stop bird species from establishing wild populations internationally.

(02:21:01):
We know the pet traders are major driver of new
vertebrae pest invasions. There are many potential consequence of birds
flying the coupe. They can spread diseases to our native
bird species. They might also compete with them, so we
know that they can be quite aggressive and confident and
bully our native species away from the food sources they want.

(02:21:24):
Some of them will strip bark off native trees. Species
like Indian ring necked parakeets, monk parakeets, and rainbow lorikeets
have restrictions around sales and breeding. Yeah, so who knew
that was a thing? Birds escape? How could so many
people let their birds escape? Because they're quite expensive, So yeah,

(02:21:49):
why don't people take care of them? It's a lot
to go every month. Eastern Rozella sulfur crested cockatoo and
rainbow lorikeeta are examples of birds that have been identified
in regional pest management plans and they monitor trade me
to look for unwanted species there. You might want to

(02:22:11):
commend on that. Also, nineteen past eleven hitdle twelve Marcus.
Is this rain system due to move up the country
or is it just for Duneda in south and only?
That's a very good question. Any meteorologists out there, if
they can let me know about that, that would be
nice to hear from you. It looks to me that
it's going to be moving up the country. That's a guess,

(02:22:33):
but that's my estimation. If you're on some of those
websites that know more information about what's happening in Dunedan,
get in touch. Also, I wait one hundred eighty tady
nine nine text according to the Civil Defense page, nothing
new there. Great update from Comm's team. Thank you. That'll

(02:22:58):
be something that works for them. Huge choes for sandbags.
Someone posted do you think bags of potting mix would work?
Water coming up faster than I expected? Well to worry,
but you want to evacuate, go to the golf club
Saint Clair. I look at the need and weather update

(02:23:21):
also people, Marcus till twelve, come on toned and weather update.
Weather update. That's the good one too, as I say,
oh wait eighty Taddy and nineteen ninety text who can't
get back to our I tager weather updates is the
one if you're looking for that weather update people. Nothing

(02:23:45):
more here just currently anyway, let's take a break. Be
nice to hear from your twenty one past eleven. Oh,
get in touch people, Marcus till twelve, twenty four past eleven.
There is something else you want to mention talk about
to say, I yeah, get in touch. Whatever you got.
I'm up for a people, for as far as discussion goes.
I've given your parrots, I've given your bread, and I've
given you the censers. They've given you the floods if

(02:24:05):
they're not good. If you if you've got something else
you want to talk about, what is that, Let's be
hearing from your people. If you've got more information about Dunedin.
I'm doing the damn just to get all the information
to you. But that's probably everything that I've got at
this stage. Who A lot of the junos are doing
live websites, but I've got no more information from there,

(02:24:26):
just apart from the the latest is that power cut
at Cape Saunders. It's a pretty isolated part of Dunedin.
But yeah, what else can we get you going on tonight? People?
If you've got something else to say? What is it?
Sure there must be a better expression than self evacuate.
I don't know what it is, but sound every time
I hear I think, well, that sounds weird, sounds ungrammatical.

(02:24:48):
How are you going with daylight savings? People? You're coping
four days on. I'm still struggling. It's one of my
great struggles is always every year adjusting to that twice. Now,
let me think what else I need? Romance? Now, let
me just check on that. Who's on after me tonight?
Two people? Oh eight hundred eighty ten eighty nine nine

(02:25:08):
two de text is romance on after me? That's right,
he'll be along from twelve o'clock tonight. The situation with
that bloom thing that guy rang me about, that was
good to get that information. Thousands of customers of a

(02:25:30):
hearing clinic chain and Zen have been warned about a
ransom we're attack that has stolen masses of sensitive data.
All the data stolen will soon appear on the dark web,
and it says that data may include bank account details,
patient records and insurance information. It made the news industry,

(02:26:00):
but not on New zen where Bloom has twenty one clinics.
It spoke person confirmed on Thursday that all customers in
New Zealand had been alerted, which must have been the letter.
Was the guy received alerting people about that. Australian media
expertsid the amount of stolen data could be astounding and

(02:26:22):
Bloom might have breached the law about retaining the personal
data of former patients and staff. Ah bye, that's the
other thing. And it's a chance to talk about that. Now,
what a Bloom do the hearing aid company? It seems
I've got bad Bloom hearing specialists. So the letter I
call it and Wtucky would have got would be the

(02:26:43):
ward that he's been breached. So yeah, I think he
was confused about the letter as I was. But he
dialed one one one, which I thought was slightly the
wrong thing to do. But the other story that I
thought was very interesting. And I'll say this while I've
got the talking stick, I've always been very wary of

(02:27:03):
those DNA websites to find your DNA to find your
part into WIT or part Scandinavian. But twenty three and meters,
the company that always does those tests, they are now
in financial trouble. I think they're bankrupt and are trying
to sell.

Speaker 11 (02:27:24):
Now.

Speaker 5 (02:27:25):
One of their conditions is they can't do anything dodgy
with the data. But that's not to say that the
company that buys the website will do something dodgy with
the data. And the major concern is that what they
will do with the data is they will sell it
to an insurance company, so the insurance company can charge

(02:27:52):
you more for insurance for you because they will know
from your DNA profile that you have pre existing conditions
that will make you a risk to ensure. So yeah,
talk about expected. I've always thought that company would be
to avoided like the plague, because they've got your data.

(02:28:13):
And what's worse, what I think probably what can happen
is in years to come, because they've taken your DNA,
they can start building replicas of you. Because they've got
basically your data, your plan, and they could sell it
to anyone. They could lick it to the dart web.

(02:28:35):
People could start cloning you and selling your body parts.
Back to you don't want to sound dramatic. That's what's
got me worried. I'm even given them a DNA to
DNA and twenty three and me I wouldn't do it anyway,
Just putting that out there, Marcus, the port workers strike
across does it concerned anyone? The port workers strike across

(02:28:58):
the US could cause major delays for Santa I've ceased
all online shopping just in case, back to basic shopping.
They're called the long shoreman are on strike? Is that
with their naghmors? Marcus went to get sandbag's massive lines
have bailed on that and improved with buckets of rocks

(02:29:18):
and a tarp to divert water. Lots of houses flooding
on Cliffs Road. Let me just look where Cliffs Road is.
So yeah, I just think because you're quite on the course,
it doesn't mean it's gone away. The flooding situation is
developing and it seems like there's massive cues for sandbags.
So there's a real situation. So where we've got Cliff's Road,

(02:29:45):
that's the one that comes down above the sint clear
Hot saltwater pool. That's the road comes down from course
to Fiend the wiggly one that comes right down to
Sint Clair. So apparently there's a massive flooding on there,
and that's because there'll be hue water on the hills. Anyway,

(02:30:08):
that's enough for me. Oh eight hundred and eighty, thanks
for a intel. By the way, half past eleven, looking
forward to your calls, head or midnight. By the way,
bird flew outbreaks call, bird flew outbreak kills dozens of
tigers in Vietnam zoo. That's heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking. They've got
tigers in a zoo. I mean, that's just sitting ducks
for bird flu, aren't they. Forty seven tigers, three lions

(02:30:32):
and the panther have died in zoos in South Vietnam
due to H five N one bird flu. I suppose
they can't really release them anyway. My name's Marcus. Welcome
twenty tel if you just joined us, Good evening and welcome,
looking forward to your calls. If you've got the updates
about the situation to need and it does seem as
though it's really bad. There's massive cues for sandbagging. There
seems to be flooding instant killed at instant clear. There

(02:30:55):
are some evacuations and there are people in the hills
also reporting flooding and trying to divert water. Have you've
got more updates about that, let us know, But can't
get sandbags because the queues are so long, and this
is a situation that's not going to remediate itself quickly
in Dunedin because of course it's very low lying and

(02:31:17):
with further sea rise they've got problems. So you might
want to mention that. We're also talking about the census.
Smoking rates have halved in the last five years, very
good news, and I think the home ownership increased slightly
to under the last government, and that's good news also,

(02:31:38):
although it started decreasing again. I think anyway at twenty
seven to Takushima. Mouth stroke, too much talking, haven't left
my seat. Christ's Marcus, Welcome, good evening.

Speaker 9 (02:31:48):
Oh hi Marcus. I've been listening most of the night,
but the only chance to call now, just basically talking
about some of the census information. And I think you
mentioned one hundred thousand. I think they call them ghost houses,
is that right? And empty houses?

Speaker 7 (02:32:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (02:32:03):
Ghost houses? Yeah, absolutely, yeah.

Speaker 9 (02:32:05):
So there was a story going around three or four
years ago. I think that you know, with overseas investment,
there was there was something like forty thousand ghost houses
in Auckland alone, so that figure stacks up I think
the one hundred thousand around the country. And there was
a guy I rang in talking about the Airbnb saying, well,
not not empty because they're Airbnb, they're occupied. But the

(02:32:26):
thing is they're not homes. So the truth is that
if there's one hundred thousand properties sitting around the country,
either ghost houses waiting for capital gain or Airbnb, I
mean that's a major that's a major influence on the
cost of living in the country, isn't it, because there's
a short of house Absolutely.

Speaker 5 (02:32:46):
And look because about ten years ago I did a
walk right around the edges of Auckland. You know, I
ended up on these suburbs out around they Snapper Rock
with the cemeteries around Albany, and there were whole suburbs
and you get a sense, you know, I'm not stupid,
but you wander around there seem to be whole suburbs
of houses with no one in them. And yeah, and

(02:33:07):
you can tell quite you know, because you can tell
a house that's empty because of the dust on them
and just the way it looks so there were and
I presume that's entirely what had happened. I mean, there
was a bit of misinformation about it, but people talk
about cheap loans from governments and people coming across here
and buying money. But certainly it's a great way to
park some funds a million bucks in a house in
Auckland and just take the capital gains, wouldn't you.

Speaker 9 (02:33:29):
Well, they've taken a hit lately, but I mean they've
still have done pretty well since maybe the last five years.
And you'll remember David Longie used to say, you know,
he was heated legal aid work in South Auckland, and
one of David Longey's sayings was that, you know, there
is no crime in South Auckland, all of the crimes
in Queen Street, because it's it's the boys with the

(02:33:50):
big money that can actually commit the biggest crimes. So
you know, if we've got people sleeping in cars and
we've got ghost houses waiting for capital gain, I think,
and I'm not a socialist by any means, but I'm
thinking there's something out of kilter there.

Speaker 5 (02:34:05):
And certainly they did. The whole people sleeping in cars
thing was quite a surprise, because until a reporter at
TV three startup, no one was aware of the problem.
I think, I think that problem has kind of been addressed.
But of course they're all now in motels and temporary
accommodation and stuff. We haven't got the permanent houses. But
still we've got enough houses for people, we just haven't

(02:34:27):
got people in them.

Speaker 9 (02:34:28):
Well that's the issue. And I mean, really that is
a crime in itself, isn't it.

Speaker 5 (02:34:33):
And there were some fairly clever ways of coming up
with ways to tax ghost houses. I think Phil Goff
had a few suggestions, but no one was particularly happy
about them. I mean, I guess a capital gain a
capital gains tax would probably take some of the heat
out of it.

Speaker 9 (02:34:47):
Yes, absolutely. And the other thing was too this the
stat about one on twenty three, speaking tod al Maori,
I just can't accept that. I just can't accept that
there's that many people are fluent.

Speaker 5 (02:35:02):
Yeah no, Look now, look, I don't know what the
full definition were was of that, and and I don't
even remember the question in the census, but I presume
it was the same question they had previously, so they
could talk at least fairly well. It says I mean,
you were talk six it was gone from six point

(02:35:24):
one percent to seven point nine percent. But that would
be a self assessing thing, wouldn't it.

Speaker 18 (02:35:28):
And that's.

Speaker 9 (02:35:34):
There you go exactly you were talking, you were talking
about people self evacuating. And the truth is that most
of the information of the census is supplied by the individuals. Now,
you know, if you ask a fat person how much
they eat, that possibly they'll definitely lie to you, and
they'll probably lie to themselves. And I think some of
the information and the census would be in the same boat.

(02:35:56):
I mean, I've had five of well say five a
motor not only five, but five of them have done
to our multi classes. There is only one who can speak,
and that's because she's fully immersed in the language all
day every day. Yes, the others that did today A

(02:36:17):
through college, I'm sure we all know a few phases
and a few words and that sort of thing, but
you could not argue that any of them are fluid
because it is basically just some very short, you know,
short phrases and a few words. But that's not fluency
and that's not speaking. I just I just can't accept
one in twenty three.

Speaker 5 (02:36:37):
I think it's got proportion of people aged fifteen over
by ability to speak today twenty sixteen, twenty twenty one.
So yeah, it's quite interesting looking at the data.

Speaker 9 (02:36:50):
I would say, I mean, obviously more people would have
some knowledge now than they did thirty years ago.

Speaker 5 (02:36:56):
Yeah, and that's what seems to me that it's yeah,
that it's that there's they've recognized as an element of
growth there, which is encouraging. I guess that's what what
what what? That's what they're about. Look, I'll have a
bit of a dick dive in the numbers, Chris, but
thank you for that twenty two to twelve Marcus till
midnight if you want to come through Marcus right in
the middle of Lemming season two. And then there's the
wildlife and marine life across and on the Otago coast

(02:37:18):
getting bettered. Also, thanks for that. Ninety four one and
ninety seven unoccupied houses in New Zealand. Thank you for that.
What I thought was interesting with the population was that
less than a quarter of people are now on the
South Island. South Island's tiny.

Speaker 14 (02:37:40):
Now.

Speaker 5 (02:37:40):
I don't know how that's changing as a percentage, but
that's not many, So less than a quarter South Island
have become forgotten. I don't know if that's of interest

(02:38:02):
to anyone, but yeah, less than a quarter ohay, one
hundred and eighty teny and nine two nine two tex.
If you've got some more flood wrap ups before the end,
it'd be nice to hear from you. South Island is
a population of one point one eight five thousand, an
increase of seven point three percent. But I presume as

(02:38:27):
a percentage of the country, the South Island population is decreasing.
Although three and four people live in the North Island,
one in three live in Auckland. Although population growth was

(02:38:49):
fastest than the South Island seven point three percent between
twenty eighteen and twenty three compared with the North Island
five point nine percent. Yeah, all territorial authorities saw growth
in the population except Willington City in the Chatham Islands.

(02:39:11):
Selwyn and Queenstown Lakes continue to be the fastest growing
areas in New Zealand. Of course, Selwyn is Rolliston. That's
the information there for you. My name is Marcus. Welcome
nineteen to twelve. Kitchen A bit today in councils put
through a bit of an update. I'll have that before
the end of the night too, I'll give a bit
of a round robin to get you all the latest

(02:39:32):
information about everything. So I will do that before the
end of the show. There's some new information or there's
a new kind of collation of all the information also too,
so i'll give you an update before twelve of that. Hi,
Juliet's Marcus. Good evening and welcome Hi.

Speaker 14 (02:39:53):
Julie, Hi Margusky good good, thanks you okay, yeah, no,
all good. It may have already been mentioned probably a
couple of years ago. I had stunning case of the
storms in Auckland, right, and I went to King tamp
Bam looking for well, I was trying a lot for sandbags,

(02:40:14):
and I went to King Tampdam. She said, get the
bags of soil. They just did same job, you know.
So I had like twelve bags of soil, just a
small ones.

Speaker 5 (02:40:27):
Yeah that makes sense too, because they kind of can
form a bit of a wall, can't they.

Speaker 14 (02:40:32):
Yeah, absolutely, yeah, absolutely, and you know you just fork
foot them to give them, you know, a bit of
breathing space as the water got in. So yeah, it
was just like, yeah, a theater of the cost of
sand bags.

Speaker 5 (02:40:47):
So if anyone, yeah, I think the sand bag. I
think the sand bags are free, but yeah, I appreciate that. Judy,
thank you for that. Now I'll give you some more
information before I do go. This is from further road
closures Loyalty Street, Forbury Corner, Tenor Road near Roadside, Glenn
Leath and Nelson Street Fourbury Corner. These have all been

(02:41:10):
closed in the past ten minutes. So the road closures
are ramping up the local tair. The MP Ingrid Larya's
post on her Facebook page to reassure people the water
pumping stations are working well and still have capacity. All

(02:41:31):
hands are on deck and there's still capacity to the pumps.
She said that she's been assured by the Needen City
Council that it will use all levers possible should it
need to. She noted the bubbling man holds around Fourbury
are being caused by pipe width and not pump capacity.

(02:41:52):
She says while the surcharge is likely to be stormed
or not sewerage, the council is treating all water is contaminated.
I see to an omerco there's no water you've got
to drink from the there's tankers at the Oma coodein
which where I spent the weekend great place. So that's
a situation for you now. The Dunedin Council has just

(02:42:15):
put on an update and i'll read that to you
to Needen City Council. This has come at eleven forty one.
Heavy rain is causing further surface flooding across the sea
and low lying areas, particularly in Cavisham in other areas
of South Indeeds. If you notice flooding or rising water
or feel unsafe, please self evacuate to friends or family
in higher ground. We've had reports of people driving through

(02:42:36):
flooded areas and causing waves or problems for a volunteers
emergency services. Please stay at home, avoid driving in these
areas and be mindful of people who are working in
these conditions idiots. Not that people walk at working, but
the people driving quickly. Welfare Center has been at Sinclair
Golf Course twenty years of door road for those in

(02:42:57):
South to need who do have anywhere safe to go,
there's plenty of parking. Pets are welcome. There has been
a landside of Arimuana Road between Carey's Bay and Debrah
Bay and on the access road to Smale's Beach from
Tomahawk road both are blocked and unsafe. There is significant
flooding on Pincular Road around the Hoops and Pappanoi Inlet

(02:43:19):
and in Caversham. We expect more surfers funding in other
areas that may be difficult to see, so we advise
people on to travel unless absolutely necessary. For those that
do need to travel, support to take care and drive
to the conditions. Sand Bags will continue to be available
south to Eden Mosculear in middle March. There is high
demand so apparently the queues were long and it must

(02:43:42):
be hard work for people to fill those out. So
that's the latest report from Dunedin Council. On this last report,
I've got the other roads that are closed. Butt Road,
Butts Road is closed at State Hiway one. Alexander Road
is closed at State Hiway eight. Tablehill Road is closed
at Milton and Bruce Road and Finch Road are closed.

(02:44:06):
TI advised at State Haway ninety between hy Koi Koy
and Taps is closed. The flood deters fire Khoi Road.
Do not travel Koi Flat Road. The road is now
closed if you import. If you're in Cape Saunders there's
twenty four customers there without power. You'll get that back
tomorrow at midday. It's twelve from twelve, almost time for

(02:44:30):
me to go home. People, by the way, just for
those peer of city concerned text through. I'm obviously in
South and not Otago. I think the we're not going
to get the same flooding in South and seems fine.
The only trouble for me is on that bluff road.
It's a terrible road. What happens is we've got the
heavy trucks because things go by truck, not rail. So
the heavy trucks that have just powered down that road,

(02:44:53):
they've made two grooves in that road, and those grooves
fill with water. So you do end up equiplanting a
long way along that because it's just a crappy road basically. So, yeah,
there be no traffic on the road this time. I'd
be lucky to pass a car this time of night.
But that's the situation. It's yeah, it's the trucks in

(02:45:17):
the roads because the trucks were allowed to have heavy
cargo because those laws would change, and they just where
a groove in the road where the rain settles. Kind
of feels like the roads aren't cambered. I've got to
watch myself I'm be coming up one of those talkback
roading experts, and this potholes on the Bluff Road. They're

(02:45:37):
filling them up every day. I guess they're waiting for
the summer to fix them. If you want to be
the final and on the final flurry tonight, Marc is
till twelve oh eight eighty nine nine two detect if
you do want to come through before the end. Oh
here's a good text. Yeah, thank you, harm and John

(02:46:02):
Ture to Marcus. I'm in Queenstown and have my daughters
with an E and T doctor in Dunedin. I think
I know exactly where you'll be going. I've done the
journey myself. Do you know if Queenstown Dunedin route tomorrow
morning will be open or risky to head towards Dunedin. Look,

(02:46:22):
I think according to the NZTA website you will be fine.
But certainly I presume if you're going from Dunedin to
Queens from Queen's Town to Dunedan you go in Roxburgh Milton,
that way would be fine. You couldn't go the other
way because the road between through Hyders closed. So I'm
pretty sure you'll be okay. Let me just check waka

(02:46:44):
Kortahi for you. I'm just on that website now. It's
a good question actually, because that will be stressful for you.
I did exactly the same drive for exactly the same
reason with a good outcome. By the way, yeah, I

(02:47:06):
think you're all good to go. I think you will
be fine, although that could change, but I think the
weather is mainly hammering it further north than that, so
it looks to me as though the only things I
can see are scheduled roadworks, but there's no flood damage.
So yeah, you'll be right. But don't go through the
rand Filly Hideway because you won't get through that way.

(02:47:29):
Just go down the Lawrence, the Alexander Roxburgh Lawrence Way.
You'll be good to go. Great question, Thanks for that.
Brilliant By the way, I don't need a chance to
discuss that. I'm still reading heaps of articles about what
a disaster that Manowa shopping center is for the airport.

(02:47:49):
Pilots can't get to their flights. I'll be furious. I
was paying the Auckland Airport Company a huge landing fee
and they build a shopping center to make money so
you can't get to your planes. Who thought that was
a good idea. No one, that's my take. Don't quote me.

(02:48:14):
No further information through too on all the blogs. By
the way, that's what I'm telling you. Just got one
last Facebook page to go to before I can check
on what's happening with the weather. I'll just do that now.
I targer civil defense and emergency. Two more comments. No,

(02:48:34):
that's not of interest to me. I'll just check the
other reporter that's been out and about. No more information
from him. But people, I don't know how many self
of it. If some people have texted. Some think it's
bad for people to self evacuate when they're petill to
stay off the roads. But I'm sure if you called someone,
I mean, I guess probably before long the army will

(02:48:55):
be there. I guess that's one of the options they
will have to get the UNI morgus in. Anyway, almost
time for me to go. People romans along next and
I'll catch you tomorrow night. So that's it for me,
and I'll talk to you to mon not if you

(02:49:16):
want to come through. If you need to email me
Marcus at news Talks he'd be dot co dot nz.
And thanks for your calls and your input And went
about all I've got to say. So yeah, and just
the upshot is the fact that there has been surface
flooding and there has been self evacuations. It seems to

(02:49:38):
be quite a serious kind of a situation and a need.
But the thing is, I think that it's still in
the planning that there is a lot more rain to
fall in the next twenty four hours. So this is
not over yet. It's not peaked. It could go for
the next twenty four hours. It could rain and rain
and rain and rain and rain. So that's why I

(02:49:59):
need to tell you. So that's a situation there. Anyway,
if you need to email me Marcus at Newstalks, he'd
be dot co dot indeed, just bearing in mind, and
I get those emails as I come to work tomorrow night.
So there's that. And that's about everything. Other news from
around the world, not much that I can see. I've
been pretty much focused on the floods. And there are

(02:50:22):
road closures. Go to the ended Tear website if you
need to see those. The major road close close road
closure is between Hide and Kyburn. That's a situation there.
Everything else seems to be running smoothie, although there is
a lot of surface flooding. A guy really came down
from omercoh and said that was bad news. Sorry, not
from Omaco, down from Wamadu and said that was bad news.

(02:50:43):
And it was fairly heavy a surface flooding on the road.
So that's a situation. There are no final texts. Send
them through quickly. I we've got some more information. No,
I think we're up to date with pretty much all
of it. So and there's no more civil defense postings
that I can see. I just do one check on

(02:51:03):
the Otago civil Defense. No, but Cavisham seems for the
area where there's surface flooding, the massive team sandbagging is
about twenty people there. It must be hard work shoveling
those shovels of sand for hours at a time. So
well done, all of them. That's a great effort. But yeah,

(02:51:24):
this weather, this weather red warning seems to go unto
nine pm tomorrow. There's certainly another twenty hours of it.
At least Roman's longex. He'll keep you inform and I'll
talk to you again tomorrow.

Speaker 7 (02:51:37):
Night.

Speaker 5 (02:51:37):
Enjoy your Friday, keep dry, keep safe, have yourself is
a good one. Good night.
