Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from news Talk, said b

Used Talk said, be you Talk.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Said, Hello, my beautiful beanies, and welcome to the bean
for Wednesday. First with yesterday's news, I am Glen Hart,
and we are looking back at Tuesday. We will get
to the thing that said the top of everybody's mind,
of course, the crops versus generals debate. But before there,
I suppose we might need to just touch on the

(00:44):
fact that Donald Trump is president.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Let's get back to that inauguration speech, which I thought
was fantastic. It was great cinema. But here's one thing
about it feels a little bit like he's promising to
take America back to the future, back to a better time,
a prouder and richer time. So what's wrong with that?
Nothing is wrong with that. But he wants America to
go back to the internal combustion engine, that's for sure.

(01:06):
He wants to go back to making great automobiles. He
wants to go back to oil, he says, drill, baby, drill.
He wants to go back to manufacturing. He wants to
go back to Reagan's eighties when America was richer and prouder.
But in doing so, you could argue he's sitting his
back on the future, because there is nothing wrong with progress.
If you're not progressing, you're standing still. And if you're

(01:28):
standing still, you're going backwards. And if you're going backwards,
you're dying. So there is nothing wrong with building the
greatest engine to power our economies. However, there is also
nothing wrong with an engine that does not pollute our
planet a better engine. There's nothing wrong with building great automobiles.
But why do those automobiles need oil? Like you'll make

(01:49):
Elon Musk and Tesla. There is nothing wrong. We're finding
a renewable energy source and replacing oil, and there's nothing
wrong with that. And in fact, to find those sorts
of answers that it would be true American exceptionalism, because
too many people these days politicize it. Too many people

(02:10):
these days confuse progress with progressivism, and they are vastly
different things. Progress is what you do to become better
every single day, and the only people who don't want
that people who are afraid of change and want to
go back.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Yeah, it is weird, isn't it. I mean, it's not
just America where we see this. Of course, even in
this country. I think you could argue that a large
part of you know, certainly National Acts and New Zealand first,
their philosophy seems to be we want things like they
were in the old days. It does make me feel

(02:50):
slightly uncomfortable that people want to reach back and not
move forward.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
News Talk ze been anyway.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
That was Andrew Dickens hosting the Drive Show this week.
Francesca Rudkin has been hosting an early edition.

Speaker 4 (03:05):
What's notable, though, is the unabashed transparence about it all.
Washington DC has always been about power, but now it's
just as much about money. If you have enough of it,
you can get a seat at the table. Such large
donors have always expected a quiet word, you know, a
game of goal. A visit to mar Lago and Washington,
DC is filled with corporate lobbyists who petition the government

(03:29):
and public to sway them on certain issues. But in
the past they're preferred to do it with some discretion.
Not now. The other thing that is so startling is
that President Trump campaigned on doing what's right for working
class America, just one of the many demographics Democrats have
lost touch with in exchange for their vote, they now

(03:49):
have some of the richest men influencing this presidency and
protecting their self interest. I hate to say it, as
some of the consequences of this presidency, such as tariffs
and geopolitical decisions, may impact New Zealand. But it is
going to be fascinating to stand back and watch how
this plays out. Who will remain in President Trump's good graces,

(04:10):
Who will see out the term, Who, like so many
of the big tech executives, will curry favorite doing whatever
it takes to keep their businesses alive and kicking. It's
going to be very interesting four years. And yeah, that's
probably an understatement.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Yes, the electorate, the US electorate seems to have a
short memory, don't they, Because I think the first time
around Trumps say is that things are going to get
better for the working guy and gal, and it didn't
really get that much better. And he's trying to juggle

(04:49):
the interests of the rich and the titans of industry
that the fortunes is the everyday person. Yeah, anyway, we
got through four years eight years ago. I don't think

(05:11):
the world's going to end of it. Talk, what does
John McDonald day, let's find out there.

Speaker 5 (05:18):
Was no chill down my spine when I listened to
him this morning. Well, maybe that's not quite correct. There was,
there was probably there was probably a hint of a draft,
but there was certainly no chill. Because just like last
year when he won the election, when I said that,
you know, it's very easy to jump on the hysteria

(05:38):
band wagon with Trump. That's how I'm feeling this morning
as well, now that it's happened, now that he's president,
I still generally think that generally, although there are a
couple of things he's been saying this morning that had
me thinking, you don't like that too much, but let's
see what happens. That's what I mean when I say

(06:00):
that there was a draft down my spine instead of
a chill, a chill, But generally, when it comes to
how I'm feeling about the next four years with him
on the lighthouse and this is something I'm keen to
get your take on as well, But for me, I'm
more intrigued than anything else. It's going to be weird
at times, but that's as bad as it's going to

(06:20):
get for me anyway. Living here in New Zealand. That
does come with a few provisos though. Number one, I'm
not an exporter, so you know, I'm not going to
be directly affected by any trade tariffs that he might
bring in. You know, I know that, you know if
that happens, we would all be affected in some way,
shape or form, because when exporters do well, we all

(06:42):
do well, don't we And when exporters don't do well, well,
we all feel it. But as anyone who has exported
anything knows, you might be in this camp, there are
always challenges to overcome. So let's wait and see.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
It's just despite protests from seven corners. Of course, this
was a bit of a discussion at the dinner table
last night, and they I have and yeah, I'm not
sure how much it's going to affect us directly. And
yet I also pointed out, I'm amazed how often people

(07:23):
text an email into the station, and they just seem
to be the most rabid Trump supporters. And I don't
know why they're so into it.

Speaker 6 (07:33):
From here, what do you think of him as a person,
Because a lot of people like I've got this text
here nineteen, I can't stand Trump, but he makes a
lot of sense in the things he says. And a
lot of what people's visceral reaction to Trump is that
they just don't like what he stands for. They think
that he is you know, that he's rude and brash

(07:54):
and unbecoming of a president.

Speaker 7 (07:57):
Do you see anything in that?

Speaker 8 (07:58):
Well, I think people should learn. I mean, you know,
they see somebody nice and respectable, like Kamala Harris. But
I mean if you listen to Kamala Harris, she's a
GREENI on steroids. And you know, you've just got to
vote for people who you think are going to do
the best thing, I mean, the best thing for your country.
I mean I noticed when the Trump's charges were like
paying a porno queen some money to keep quiet that

(08:19):
he had sex with her. I mean really, there's a
lot of people in zild would just laughing and say
so what, But some people get so offended by it,
and it's discussing and horrible. I just think the way
Trump won record numbers people voted him for, you know,
every ethnicity and record numbers, and you know, just ring

(08:40):
up and say that people that voted from a dumb
and stupid those people have no argument at all.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
Yeah, I don't know. If somebody's voted in with an
overwhelming majority in another country somewhere, does that mean you
have we don't have the right to criticize how it
looks from our point of view. I mean, I think
Heitler was pretty pretty popular when he took charge. Quite

(09:10):
turn out as at his rallies. People were pretty enthusiastic, saying,
news talk has it been? Wow, you actually went there, Glen.
Let's forget everything that just happened in the podcast and
look about sin serious news.

Speaker 7 (09:28):
Two crocs with jendles hold injuries. We're talking tripped and
dissicated little toe one word crocs, but he taped it
to the two toes next to it. Good as gold, mate.
I wouldn't think the crocs were a problematic if they're wet, though.
I'm just sure there's a lot of shoe extra to
the I guess crocs and gendals well though. You see

(09:50):
more crocs and jendles now, don't you. I think we've
gone over that peak. I think the jendles in ten
years could be a thing of the past. Personally, I
don't like anything between my toes. I've never really been
a gendal's person. Although I'm yet to see as as
many crocs floating up on the beaches as gendals for

(10:11):
a while there now, I've never seen crocs float up anyway.
Of course, the kids love them the hollows because really
easy on, easy off, that's what you need in it
for the summer. The key we summer off go the crocs,
On go the crocs. Probably the catch cry for the
summer has been have you seen my crocks dead? Where
are my CROs?

Speaker 2 (10:32):
For goodness sake?

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Can you really argue.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
That the general is a superior example of footwear over
the crop? I guess. I mean it is more enclosed
the crop, but it's no less easy to slide on
and off. You've got the option of that strap at
the back or not. I mean, don't get me wrong,

(11:01):
I'm no crops megafan or anything. But you also can't
argue that they just provide a more comfortable all experience, don't, Jane, nobody.
I don't think it's ever argued that your jendles are
so comfortable, provide so much support. I think anybody's ever

(11:23):
really said that, have they It's just they can get
them wet, get them sandy, print them off and you
can do all that with with crops. Yeah, I've got it.
I think I'm coming down on the side of the
crops and this this is it even a debate. Isn't
it great that I've completely forgotten what we were talking
about in the rest of the podcast and tested that's

(11:45):
going to just be my my whole goal, I think
for the next four years. I am Glen Heart. That
has been used, Talks has been and I'll be back
to forget more stuff tomorrow.
