Speaker 1 (00:09):

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Hello, my beautiful beanies, and welcome to the bean for Friday.
First of yesterday's news. I am being Hart and we
are looking back at Thursday. Drill, Baby, Drill, jeel jill drill.
Otherwise we're going to run out of oil and gas,
which would be the end of the world. What's happened
to the male role models? What's Auckland's plan? Do we care?

(00:47):
And we're podcast relate. I couldn't resist doing it. I
feel like I've already done some podcasts really last week.
Ben wait to you see and or hear what I've
got lined up for you at the end. But before
any of that, the Treasury reports out, and I think
everything's great. The green shoots are growing like bamboo.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
I would like to think if we make the changes necessary,
the super will be there for those who need it.
I would like to think that if we make the
changes necessary, young people starting off in life, starting off
with their families, will not be crippled by the burden

(01:28):
of looking after people who were too lazy and self
interested to vote for the changes needed to spread the burden.
It's on us. We can't just look to the politicians.
What are they going to do? They are only going
to come up with policies that they think will appeal
to us. Are we that childlike that we just want

(01:51):
the sweets before we'll vote a political party in. We
have to be grown ups. We have to grasp the
nettle and say this is tough, and this is going
to be ugly, but we're going to do our bit
to ensure that New Zealand is a better society for
future generations. That's the way it used to be, and

(02:16):
we've dropped the ball.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
You know.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
We can moan and grizzle all we like about the
waste of money and the lack of purpose and the
divingering around and the incompetence, but ultimately, if we want
to affect change, it's on every voter in this country
to do so.

Speaker 4 (02:36):
I love the word grizzle.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
I keep forgetting about it, and then I hear somebody
like Kerry use it, and I think I must use
the word grizzle because we go with moan and winge
a lot.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
You're like grizzle.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
You hardly ever hear it anymore, which is a bit
of a tautology given that we just heard it.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
Then news talk z Bean. All right, so.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yeah, the gas gas is running out and apparently we
might have some somewhere and so we should get it.
I think that's what's happening now. This will sounds good
if you're in the middle of an energy crisis, which
we are. But will the international or even local investment

(03:23):
in prospective actually happen. Well, one application within the space
of two hours would seem to suggest that there's at
least some interest, which is good.

Speaker 5 (03:30):
Is it all worth it? The Greens say no. They
have said this is igniting a climate fire today, which
they've put out on the same day that there's this
photo of Chloe Swarbrick going viral online. Have you seen this?
The reason it's going viral is that she's on a plane.
She's on a plane to London to be more specific,
and planes use avgas and that's fossil fuels. But that's

(03:53):
not really why it's gone viral. It's not just the plane.
The co leader of the Green Party for People and
Planet appears to be flying business class.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Nothing be sujet to you holiday right now?

Speaker 6 (04:09):
You can save fifty pounds per person. That's two hundred
pounds off for a family of four.

Speaker 5 (04:15):
Now, I say appears because we went to the Greens
today after this has been sent to us a thousand times,
went to the Greens and said, hey, what's going on?
Did Chloe actually fly business class over to London? And
they came back with the statement to say, no, it
wasn't business class, it was premium economy. Is that is

(04:36):
that better? I don't know anyway, Premium economy apparently on
in New Zealand and it was paid for. Went there
as part of a mission led by the Insurance Council
of New Zealand to meet with reinsurers, et cetera, et cetera.
They say, climate change is the global issue which requires
global cooperation. Insurance is an important part of managing the
damage that it will cause. She's taken the opportunity to

(04:57):
meet with political leaders, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. The travel, they say,
has been funded by the Insurance Council, so we are
not on the hook for it. That it's the beginning,
middle and end of that story.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
Because.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
I'm a bit confused about once you're on the the
plane's already going. Does it make that much difference which
part of it you're sitting in. I'm not really a
fan of this. You want an end of climate change,
but you've got to go through here by kayak because

(05:33):
you'll be late to a lot of meetings. It's just silly.
There's so many other reasons why you can call out
issues with Green Party policy. You don't, I don't think,
really think you need to get into which part of the.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
Plane are you flying around on this? But we're right.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Male role models was the topic of discussion or our
topic of discussion on the Afternoon Show yesterday.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
Let's have we got them? Or have we not got them?

Speaker 7 (06:07):
You know, fifty years old. I haven't had a voice
in them a community for a long time, but I volunteer,
I do lots of different stuff. And I just think
that and the absence of strong, you know, strong father's
strong male role models, you know, telling our boys what
we're good at and what we can do and giving
them some inspiration. I just think our voice has been

(06:29):
quiet into the too long because of this kind of
view around what is toxic masculinity? And I just think
that in New Zealand it just needs to change a
little bit. You know, males and strong fathers need to
find their voice again and drown out the noise and
the nonsense from people like Andrew Tate.

Speaker 8 (06:46):
You absolutely absolutely do, and do you think it's a
case of showing as much as it is doing. You know,
as I was reading something the other day saying that
the best thing you can do is as a dad
is to model the behavior that you want to see.
And so if you want to raise children who don't
have sexist attitudes, it's it's that don't make a big

(07:09):
deal about how dad helps with the cooking and helps
with the cleaning. You just and even remove remove the
word helps, because that implies that you're doing less than half.
If you're helping, just just do it, you know, have
your kids see that you're doing it, See that you
wash the dishes, see that you do the laundry, you

(07:30):
see that you cooked dinners, and them just seeing as
opposed to you having to have conversations kind of after
the horse's bolt.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
I I feel like.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
Male role models are overrated.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
I just, yeah, I haven't seen too many males that
I want to model myself after I see a lot of.

Speaker 4 (07:54):
Women doing a good job with things and a lot
of men suck.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
But maybe I just didn't have enough male role models
in my life. Okay, so the Auckland Council that they've
got a plan. It seems weird to be putting a
plan in place this close to an election. I mean,
all those people might not be there after the election.

Speaker 6 (08:17):
Well past time we stopped further housing development in areas
we know are prone to flooding and coastal erosion. This
is a no brainer. It's also cheaper to build where
good supporting infrastructure already exists, rather than it is to
create new housing areas where infrastructure has to be developed
from scratch. In particular, given the cost of the CRAL,

(08:40):
it makes sense to have as many people living near
it and benefiting from it as possible. Or, as the
Mayor said, there's no point in spending six billion on
something if there's nobody on the damn thing. Even though
the council meeting voted in favor eighteen to five, it
doesn't mean there wasn't plenty of discussion around the council table.
Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson asked for conditions around high towers

(09:03):
and I think this was a sensible thing to do.
She suggested tall apartments need to be set back and
have communal areas and facilities. The Mayor supported the amendment,
saying there needs to be parking and commercial activity on
the lower levels, and so that was incorporated into the
main motion. I mean car parking is essential, right. Counselor
Christine Fletcher, though, didn't have quite the same luck with
her amendment when she asked for greater consultation and for

(09:25):
the plan change to be publicly notified. At present, public
consultation will begin on November third clothes on December nineteen.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
It is quick.

Speaker 6 (09:34):
Fletcher's amendment would have drad consultation out until the middle
of next year. To be honest, yesterday I thought the
Council would take the safe option and extend consultation, But
after much debate about what Minister Chris Bishop would think
about all this, I think there was a bit of
mind reading going on. This amendment was voted down fifteen
to eight. So while debate was generally a bit dry,

(09:58):
the day did come with some interesting rhetoric. Councilor Morris
Williams thought both options were unacceptable, saying it's a choice
between a firing squad and a lethal injection. Surprisingly, he
voted for the plan. I'm not sure which option he
considered this to be.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
I'm assuming Francisca met Marris Williamson called Marris Williams, unless
he's a Marrius Williams on the council as well, they
might well be. As you can tell, I don't really
follow what happens in local body politics at closely, primarily
because I don't think there should be any local body politics.

(10:35):
I think it should just be run by a CEO
and a bunch of people who know what they're doing,
and we'll leave the big decisions to see central government.
I mean, our country is the size of a sort
of a medium sized city by world standards.

Speaker 4 (10:52):
So anyway, controversial, but hi hot takes on a Friday
news talk it.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
Okay, let's finish up with the podcast Roulette once again.
I have no idea what this is about. And once
again it's markets. It's called Eels and Lake Brunner.

Speaker 5 (11:12):
Elijah at S Marcus Wilcome, Hey, Marcas, Elijah.

Speaker 9 (11:18):
I just lived the inland from Graham out a bit,
so I've heard a few Heels stories around the One
that sticks in my mind the best as of a
fellow who is out on Lake Brunner. He was coming
back in from Adaa out on the lake and dropped
his secondary motor accidentally. He got some scuba gre scuba

(11:41):
gear and went back uh later and went down a
little ways and looked to the bottom of the lake
and it was just a massive, humongous heels. He decided
he leave the motor.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Wow, like the whole ground was just covered on them.

Speaker 9 (11:59):
Apparently, and Biggens too.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
I'd I'd be inclined to believe that story too, because
it's got that eerie feel about it like Brunner, hasn't it.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (12:10):
Yeah, for sure?

Speaker 3 (12:11):
Well though, would there be enough food there to sustain
them all?

Speaker 4 (12:13):
Or would how would that all work?

Speaker 9 (12:17):
There's plenty of fists coming down from the rivers, I'm sure,
or whatever else they eat. Yeah, it's quite abasing, comes
in from everywhere.

Speaker 4 (12:28):
How's the white bait going, Elijah?

Speaker 9 (12:32):
Ah, pretty good as far as I've heard.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
Yeah, Okay, I like the way Elijah pronounces Brunner. And
I'm trying to get the image of a writhing lake
bed of do it's just eels? There is something creepy
about them. They're not quite snakes, but they almost are.

(12:59):
Nobody likes snakes, do they poor our snakes? I mean,
I don't feel sorry, fuse I hate honestly, it's scared
of the cheeses out of it anyway. I am gian
hat sorry to creep you out into the weeks going
to the weekends.

Speaker 4 (13:14):
Try and get their image out of your head.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
The writhing lake Beard of eels.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
The podcast really definitely blew out of my brain.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
I'm going to shake my head, try and get it out,
and I'll see you back here again on my day.
