Used Talk said, be you talk.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Hello, my beautiful beanies, and welcome to the bean for Friday.
First of yesterday's news. I am Glen Hart, and we
are looking back at Thursday. How confident are you feeling?
Why would we be bidding for the Commonwealth Games? I
thought that was all sorted and I also sort of
thought we weren't doing that anymore. And we'll finish up
(00:47):
with some podcasts Roulette. What a great way to be
in the week before any of that. Yes, so the
OC pretty much as expected. Blahblah, everything's getting get us slightly.
It's all kind of right, isn't it. We're all going
to have a very merry Christmas, aren't we.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
At one point in the press yesterday, the Chief Economist
was almost repeating this like it was a mantra, as
if by saying it over and over again he would
will it to happen. There are two problems here. First,
we've heard it all before and not seen the results
in Two, by their own admission, the GDP numbers that
we've been relying on aren't reliable. There's a bunch of
(01:23):
seasonality in the numbers, especially for that shocker in June
where we apparently went backwards almost eight percent. We didn't.
The computer's a bit bust after COVID hasn't quite caught up. Basically,
the good news it probably wasn't as bad in that
quarter as they said it was. The bad news growth
the following quarters probably wasn't as good as forecast either.
(01:45):
So giveth with one hand and taketh with another. So
we have a system we're hoping like hell will still
work in this new post COVID tariff environment with sticky
inflation and pretty lame o growth, and the numbers well,
we can't really rely on them, which if you cast
you in mind back to quarter two, they get blown
(02:06):
up by us in the media, were guilty as charged,
scaring people into closing their wallets again and again, perpetuating
the cycle. To be fair, there's always been a lag
with the ocr working its magic, and at some point
surely will hit the g spot again for growth, if
for no other reason than what goes down must at
(02:27):
some point bounce back up.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
That's what I've been saying, Ryan, get we micro analyze
all this stuff so much. Everything's cyclical. You gotta have
some bad times so you can appreciate the good times.
Good times of coming. People hang on in there, and
no matter how did they get, there'll still be people
telling you that that's terrible news. Talk is hither telling
(02:52):
us it's terrible, or is she's saying good times are coming,
it's fine out.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
And that is part of the recession. The reason why
this recession has dragged because our house prices are not
going up. They have gone backwards, and so we're not spending,
which means that we're not spending our way out of
the recession. The thing about this is that the Reserve
Bank has actually done things to deliberately keep our house
press price is suppressed right, things like debt to income ratios.
(03:17):
Some of the stuff is not their fault, like people
leaving the country and therefore not wanting to buy a house,
supply demand blah blah blah. But some of it is
the fault of the Reserve Bank. Have done this deliberately,
and we talk I warned you about this on the
show before I said this to you in August, I
said I was worried that the Reserve Bank was keeping
house prices depressed and that it would drag out this
recession longer, which it has. And I've been talking privately
(03:38):
to Brad Olsen about it as well, who's been keeping
an eye on it. Two and we've been debating the
merits of it. But here's the silver lining. We actually
needed to let go of this property recession. It's been
hard a property obsession. It's been hard, but we needed
to do it because we have got to stop putting
our money into property, and we've got to start putting
our money into businesses and other productive assets. And this
is the breakup that we needed to have. No breakup
(03:59):
is nice and this one isn't either. So we anyw
our text Brad Olson this morning, Yet again he goes on,
here we go use a text from Heather. I said, Brad,
are you still sure that it was worth it was
worth it to break up with our property obsession given
how hard it has made this recession? And he just
replied with yes, I do. So what I would say is,
if you're doing the glass half full, at least we
(04:21):
will come out of this recession less in love with
houses and more likely to put our dollars into stuff
that will actually make New Zealand richer, and that's got
to be a good thing.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Yeah, like the stock market and AI and crypto. Nothing
could ever go wrong with any of.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
That stuff, right us talk sip.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
I mean, especially if everybody starts feeling confident, then everything
is worth more and everybody makes more money. It's just
a state of mind.
Speaker 5 (04:49):
Yeah. We used to be known as No Zealand and
it was all like oh no, no, no, I don't
bother investing here. It's all too hard. Oh you'll lose
your money, it says. It's quite difference, quite different now,
quite different. He's picking up the positivity, he's seeing more
of it. Where are you at right now? As we
(05:13):
go into Christmas, there's a month of busyness for many
companies and many businesses and many workers. It's a busy
time of year up until a couple of weeks before Christmas.
A week before Christmas. Then as we go into Christmas
and the Christmas holidays, how are you feeling about going
into twenty twenty six? Are you feeling optimistic? Can you
(05:36):
feel the tide is turning?
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (05:38):
The only real issue I have is that the new
year is my least favorite time of the year on
this job because I had to edit radio awards. It's
a terrible way to start the year. I wish I
could do that around I don't know, September it would
be a good time to do it, or never would
(06:01):
be a good time to do it. I don't think
that's got anything to do with what Carry was talking about,
but you know, set right, I think because the Comrath
Games are going back to India, I thought we weren't
doing that anymore anyway.
Speaker 6 (06:18):
Oh goodness gracious to me. I did see on Facebook
somewhere that New Zealand was keen for the Commonwealth Games,
a bid after our membermen are bad. So can I
just say off the bat now that I could not
be further opposed than anything the New Zealand game for
(06:39):
the Commonworth Games in twenty thirty four. I think that
would be a waste of money on something that no
one's really that into. Yeah, so just to shut the
discsule off at the chase, I would be extremely opposed.
(07:01):
So just so you know, I think probably it's one
of those things that christ Church might ask for. The
New Zealand Olympic Committee is pursuing a bid to bring
the twenty thirty four Commonwealth Games to New Zealand. It's
dead on the vine, isn't it. So that's me got
off the Olympic Committee n z OC chief executive Nicki
(07:27):
Nickel indicated their expressive interest was gaining traction. We really
appreciated the support we had from the secrets of the
government for this expression of interest. We'd love to host
the comm Games here in twenty thirty four. Of course
we've had it three times. We've had in Auckland and
fifty something. We've had it in christ Church, which was
the best, the peak of the Commonwealth Games in seventy four,
(07:48):
then in Auckland in nineteen ninety which wasn't quite as good.
So he is very much opposed to that. And I
don't know why Nicki Nichol, who she is, has tried
to go for that anyway.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Yeah, it feels a bit of an old school thirty
Daddy retro, isn't it. Beij Brown on Brown with a
bit of orange highlighting. Ronan. I think we're done with that.
Let's go for something a little bit more forward. Maybe
the E Games will do that instead.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
News talk all right here it is.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
I don't think we've played podcast really this week, so
I thought we'd finished with some surprisingly enough for Matt
and Tyler's show. They've sent me a piece of audio
that is entitled Somethink Corpse grew. I know that this
could be potentially the best game of podcast reulet we've
(08:45):
ever played.
Speaker 7 (08:45):
I've been feeling quite bad about something over the last
four days, so I remaed it this.
Speaker 8 (08:50):
Morning three two one. Text coming in to complain about
you saying something and still something.
Speaker 7 (08:56):
Yeah, it'll come through nine two nine two. I'm not
going to change I am who I am. So somethink, Yeah,
something that has been upsetting me.
Speaker 4 (09:04):
We're not upsetting me.
Speaker 8 (09:05):
I just should we just say that as a quirk
of Tyler Adams. He says something and people are just
going to have to learn to live with it.
Speaker 7 (09:14):
It is just part of who I am. So I'm
sorry about that. Actually, I'm not sorry about it.
Speaker 8 (09:18):
Is it a Nelson thing?
Speaker 7 (09:21):
No, I think it's just a Tyler ADAMSAKA don't don't
dispourage the good people and Nelson right. So it was
something that happened, and I'm sorry to bring this back up.
I had the barbecue. It was a lovely time. You
had a good time, I think most other people did.
But when you turned up, you had a lovely bottle
of wine. Oh yes, yeah, and turned out this winet
a French rose.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
Yeah it was.
Speaker 7 (09:42):
It looked like a lovely French rose. But the problem
was it had a cork in it. And then I
had to frantically because I knew in the back of
my head we didn't have a bottle opener. We could
not get through that cork unless it was going to
be a little bit of cork within that wine. And
so I made a big show of actually looking for something. No,
I thought full well I didn't have it, so I
went out to buy one this morning. But I just thought, yeah,
(10:04):
the old corkscrew. So I will get into that wine tonight,
thank you very much. At least you want to beat
by the.
Speaker 8 (10:08):
Way, No, no, no, you have it. I forget that
when I brought round a bottle of French rose with
a corc inut, that I would leave it there and
you know, about three am, you'd smash the top of it,
just drink straight from the broken end of the bottle.
Speaker 7 (10:21):
Yeah, it got pretty close to that, Actually got pretty
close to that, but just so you know, mate, next
time you want to bring round a fancy pants bottle
of wine with a corc inut, I'm ready to go, now,
ready to go.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
Well, better still bring a corkscrew as well. It's been
like Commonwealth Games, isn't it, wine bottles with corks and them.
We're done with that. Move on. It should come and
in fact these days shouldn't it. Doesn't it just sort
of come in a tetra pack and you punch your
straw and to the top of it. I think so.
I am Glen Hart thirsty now often hungry at the
(10:52):
end of the podcast, not off and thirsty, but I am.
Now maybe it's the weather. I'll see you back here
again on Monday.
