from News.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Talks a b Right now at is twenty four minutes
to ten and time to talk movies. Francesca Raykens our
film reviewers. She's here this morning. Killed her.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Before we rip into things, I'm not sure if you've
just seen the news this morning, but very sad news
out of the US. Jim Lovell is the or was
the ninety seven year old commander of Apollo thirteen, and
news from NASA this morning that he has died after
a pretty remarkable life, so at the age of ninety seven.
So he was he was Tom Hanks's character in the

(00:41):
Apollo thirteen movie.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Yeah, no, but I hadn't caught up on the news.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Sorry, you wonder where I was going with that?

Speaker 4 (00:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah, always always thank you for keeping me in form.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
I feel like that's how we, yeah, like most of
us engage with Apollo thirteen and the amazing stories obviously
through the rev Right, So I hang on which character that?

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yep?

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Okay, Yeah, so yeah he was. He was Tom Hanks's character,
Jim love remarkable of the Apollo thirteen mission. Anyway, two
films to talk about this morning, let's start off with
a little bit of a listen to a movie showing
in cinemas at the moment. This is Weapons.

Speaker 4 (01:13):
Missus Gandy's room was totally empty. And do you know
why because the night before, at two seventeen in the morning,
every kid woke up, got out of bed, walked downstairs
and into the dark and they never came back.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
I don't know, any film that has a kid speaking
in a creepy voice makes me feel nervous.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
Look, I know how you feel about horror films, but
occasionally a horror film comes along that you should definitely
check out. I mean, this year we've had incredible films.
We've had Sinners, which was absolutely fantastic. You know, people
are really pushing the boundaries with horror films these days.
And last year even four films were nominated for Oscars.
Four horror films were nominated for Oscars. So with you know,
people are really kind of elevating this genre and this

(02:11):
is one of the This is one that you should
probably is worth catching. It's quite a young guy writer, director,
Zach Krieger, and he has done a couple of films
sort of is in collaborations, but his first film that
he sort of wrote and directed was called Barbarian and
it did very very well, And if you're a fan
of that film, there is a little cameo of a

(02:33):
star from Barbarian turns up in this film as well.
When he wrote the script, it was highly sought after.
Everybody wanted it. Phills Company wanted it. Everybody wanted it
ended up at Newline and look, it's just it's I
really enjoyed it. You heard the premise. It's that simple,
and that's what I love about it. He's picked something
really clever and many kind of the whole film was

(02:54):
just sort of unpacking this. He gets straight into it.
At the beginning of the film, we learn what has happened,
and we know this has happened purely from people's home
security system. They picked up children leaving their homes or
running past them. And these children left their homes. They
ran kind of weirdly. Their arms were out like they
were airplanes, as if they were into some kind of trance,

(03:17):
and off they go, and that's really all we know,
and the film kind of kicks off. It kicks off
about a month later. The police have no idea where
these kids are. They have no idea where they've gone.
They've been searching, they've been investigating, and they've been investigating
two people in particular, because from this class there are
only two people left. One is one other kid, Alex

(03:39):
he was the only kid who turned up at school
that day, and their teacher, Miss Candy, And so there's
a lot of investigating that goes on with them. Surely
they must have known something. Surely they must know the
kids were planning something. You know, where have they gone?
So they're very much in the limelight. And the film
starts by looking at Miss Gandy, and then it unfolds
in chapters and each person we get sort of each

(04:01):
person's point of view of what's been going on in chapters.
So I think sometimes when you use different chapters and
different point of views to tell a story, it can
be a bit clunky. But what I loved here and
what's really clever, is that each chapter reveals more about
the story, twists and turns, keeps it going. It's quite unpredictable.

(04:24):
And then finally kind of this villain arrives and interestingly,
this up tool. Now there's some really good jump frights
that will catch you and you know, we've talked about.
I'm terrible and I'm always jumping in my chair at
these things, even though I know they're coming. But it's
kind of more of this building tension. It's just weird
and creepy, and this tension builds and it's quite psychological.

(04:48):
The final lack, though, just goes total black comedy. It's
like the director's gone, Okay, I've freaked you out. You're
all a bit tense, let's have a laugh, and it
gets quite absurd and quite fun, and you finally sort
of find yourself laughing at this film's ungrowths. So look,
they've done a really good job. I yeah, no, it's pacey,
it's a bit unpredictable, it's well shot, well crafted. Yeah,

(05:10):
good fun if you like a horror.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
Yeah, well, it sounds like you really enjoyed it. Okay,
that is there is weapons. So that is showing in cinemas. Now,
I still think I'm just gonna need a bit more
of a nudge friends escape, But I'm like, you did
a very good sell this morning. Yeah no, I no,
you did well. Next up, this is also showing in cinemas,
and let's have a listen to mister Burton.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
Mister Burton, I want to be an actor.

Speaker 5 (05:34):
To be an actor, he will need to move in
certain social spheres. In it to your mouth, I would
like you to scream.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Okay, tell us about mister Burton.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
This is a film by Mark Evans and it starts
Harry Laughty. If anyone has watched Industry and you google
Harry Laughty, you'll know you'll be very familiar with this
young man. And here is except Good as a young
Richard Burton. So this is the film of really Richard
Burton's formulative years in Wales, and we learn about his upbringing.

(06:15):
He came from a very poor family. His mother had
died when he was young. His father basically just didn't
really have room for him at his house, didn't look
after him. His sister took him, she brought him up.
He was kind of always getting in trouble. But he
had this English teacher, Philip Burton, because of course he
was Richard Jenkins, and he had this English teacher who just,

(06:39):
you know, kind of recognized that he was quite bright.
And he had to leave school to get a job
and things. But then the teacher sort of took him
under his wing a bit and said, look, I can
find a way to bring you back into school. And
this relationship began which lasted their entire lives, and in fact,
Philip Burton ended up taking in Richard. He was a

(07:00):
huge love of the theater. He got him involved in acting.
He had taught him everything he knew. He got a
scholarship to Oxford for six months. He really gave him
this start in life to go on and become one
of the greatest actors of all time. So we're seeing.
What I liked about this film is that it is
a different period. We've seen a lot of films about

(07:21):
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor and his hell raising and things.
But here you see this young man from this incredibly
difficult background works so hard to try and get to,
you know, to make something for himself. But at the
same time you've there's a lot of pride there, there's
a lot of shame, there's a lot of self hate.
There's a lot of other things unfolding here. I think
this is quite special. This film cool. Toby Jones, Leslie

(07:46):
Manvil also star and Harry Lortie, and I think together
they've created something amazing And actually this is the first
time that Richard Burton's daughter, Kate Burton, who was also
an actress, has participated in, or shown or even watched
a film about her father and she thinks it's very
special as well. And she actually joins me on the
Sunday session tomorrow to talk about her father and the film.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
Yeah, oh that sounds great, Okay, looking forward to that,
Thank you, Francisca. So those films once again, mister Burton
and Weapons was the horror film that Francisca told us
about first. We'll have details for those movies up on
the News Talk ZB website.
