Kevin Milne: Catching up with Auckland

Kevin Milne was in a different neck of the woods this past week. 

He and his wife Linda were up in Auckland, catching up with some old friends and experiencing what the city has on offer at the moment.

Well, she said to me this morning that she should

went and got ao advantage point, so that a good
spot on advantage point, so she could see everything as
it unfolded. But yeah, I mean it does sound pretty,
you know, reasonably serious. But I suppose my initial reaction
is that, you know, provided they can refloat it safely,

you can only imagine how much worse it might have
been in a worst case scenario. An absolute worst case scenario.

Is blocking away of the other fairies.

No, I know, from from my understanding it's it's not.

Anyway, We're going to keep up with the very latest
from the authorities as they continue their efforts in the
sounds this morning, just outside of Picton. But I hear
you were up another part of the country this week
in Tarmaki, Mikardo.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Auckland, Kevin, Yahlyndra and I spent four rewarding days up
your neck of the woods this week. Now, while downtown
Auckland's decline continues, the old suburbs seemed more glorious than ever.
Who was it that had the foresight to preserve block
after block of beautifully aged bungalows and cottages across Auckland.

(01:50):
No other city except maybe Dunedin, has fared so much
of its vintage housing stock. I'd be liking from Mount
Eden were our first friend of the house nearly fifty
years ago, as a young TV one newsman. Gosh, I
wish I could have bought that house back then. There
are all those leafy suburbs too, of course, like Herne

Bay's and Mary's Bay, Freeman's Bay, Ponsonby, Graylan absolutely gorgeous.
But Mount Eden has busy, rumpty old Mount Eden Road
running alongside it. And with busy roads come shops, cafes, florists, supermarkets,
libraries which bring people. We stayed a couple of nights

in Mount Eden with old journo friends. The man in
this couple is an astonishing cook. It surprises me actually
how many hard assed male journalists turn out to be
excellent cooks. But this guy's the best. The first thing
he said after inviting us to say was I've been
keeping something for a special occasion. They're hard to find. Actually,

we'll have a little French night. Can you guess that? What?
What that might have been? Deck?

Snails? No frogs, legs, No, No distinctiest of cheeses.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Yeah, no, I can't remember having it before. They're all
over New Zealand, yet the French have celebrated it for years.
No truffles, cock jack, we had some cock. I never
knew what a cock was exactly. Do you it's a

I heard there were a lot of them in all clinics, Leva.

Speaker 3 (03:34):

And the famous French dish with coconut is of course
cocko van cock with wine, a stew with perhaps a
little brandy, crisp, bacon, mushrooms and pearl onions. Magnificent. Now
Linda doesn't have bacon unbelievably. Mikey remembered that from a
couple of years back, and he cooked her a separate

meal without the bacon. What a host, Jack, and a
great journal as well.

Yeah, that's fantastic. What Yeah, we just want even do
I say, do you buy it?

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Do you buy cock?

Do you beer?

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yes? You buy cock? Okay, yeah, I mean you need
to go. I didn't find that.

We specialiss store. Yeah, we've got a couple of the
French specialist stores and Parnell or something like that. Maybe
is the is the place?

guesses where I was going to end up to be
