Starlink goes mini - which I'm sure will delight the campervanners

Elon Musk says this product will "change the world". He has a point, it certainly has the potential to take internet into hard-to-reach locations, including locations without power. The new Starlink Mini is an all-in-one device, which is a combo satellite dish and router, small enough to fit in a (large) backpack. It delivers 100mbps internet on DC power sources, needing just 20-40 Watts, which means a portable power pack is enough to use it. It's around 30cm long, 25cm wide and weighs just over 1kg -- not too much bigger than the biggest iPad. Available as a mobility add-on in the USA, and as a standalone product in parts of Central & South America and is expected to roll out to more countries soon.

Netflix is going from your tv, to the mall

You can soon live your favourite Netflix shows. Opening in 2025, Netflix House is headed to shopping malls in Dallas and near Philadelphia, using the tens of thousands of square feet of retail space abandoned by department stores. They say there will be "regularly updated immersive experiences" and "unique food and drink offerings". It's certainly not going to be a theme park, but seems to be more of a highly interactive museum / gallery?  Can't get to those locations? Netflix has launched its own popcorn —"Netflix Now Popping"— which is for sale at Walmart.

You're listening to the Saturday Morning with Jack Tame podcast
from News Talks at.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
B Darlink is going Mini. Our texpert is Paul Stinhouse.
He has all the details on the service that gives
Internet to people who might not otherwise have it.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
What's happening, Paul, Yeah, and it's about to go to
places where internet has never been possible. This is actually,
I know, we it's easy to hate on Elon Musk
and he says that this product will change the world,
and it all sounds a bit cliche, but wow, he
actually kind of has a point here, Jack, This is cool.
This is a pretty big technology breakthrough. So Starlink at

(00:44):
the moment, just to set the scene, is it's a
satellite dish that kind of looks like a I don't know,
like a couple of laptops kind of put together. And
then it's got a wireless base station somewhere else.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
This Starlink Mini is basically the size of a MacBook,
basically the size of the biggest iPad, and that is it.
It's an all in one device. You can point it
at the sky and get internet. Now, why will it
take you to places and give internet in places? You
may not have been able to get it before. This
can be powered using basically a portable power pack. Wow,

(01:21):
so the thing you use to charge your phone can
basically be a slightly more souped up version, but that
can basically power your starlink device. You can get Internet
wherever you are, and it delivers one hundred megabytes per second.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Just phenomenon, one hundred megas of a second as well.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Yeah. Yeah, So that's like we're talking here about like
some pretty cool technology that you think about where this
could actually be deployed now, right, Like this could be this.
I mean the way that they're kind of putting it is,
you know, if you have a star ankle ready, you
can now get an additional mini and take it on
the go with you.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Yeah, that you actually could think of the.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
People who have camper vands. Yeah right, I think of
you know, like you've got maybe you've got your starlink,
I think a few years down the line and starlink
at home or whatever, and then you just take your
starlink mine with you and you could be camping, you
could be wherever. Yeah, and there you are, You've got
Internet with you at glisteringly fast speeds. Should point out
at the moment only available in the USA as an

(02:23):
add on, it is available as a standalone thing in
parts of Central and South America, and I'm going to
be rolling it up to more countries soon, So keep
an eye out for the starlink. Manee.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
It's funny. I saw like a hot take once on
Twitter or x that suggested for all of yeah, yeah, yeah,
all of his various projects, be at SpaceX, be at Tesla,
be it Twitter X, be at the hyper loop everything,
for all of the stuff that he's involved with, that

(02:54):
this would end up being the thing that actually had
the biggest impact by kind of not necessarily democratizing information,
but by giving lots of people who would not otherwise
have access to the Internet. Internet, he could, you know,
change the world in quite profound ways, which is very interesting.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Think about this in emergency situations.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, yeah, that's exactly.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
You just need you don't need power the grid goes down,
and say you can still get folks connected. I think,
I mean, the war is marketing, it is one I
think of.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, you know, and our soldiers in the battlefield have
been using you know, his his starlink so that they
can work out where the enemy is and guide their
various attacks and things, which is quite.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
It makes it a bit like a video game.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Doesn't worryingly. So yeah, hey, thank you so much, Paul.
That is really really interesting to be intriguing.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
