A planned $3 billion inland port in Otago hopes to support soaring freight volumes in the region.

Construction of the Milburn Quadrant, north of Milton, is expected to start within two years.

It comes as forecasts predict freight volumes from Central and South Otago are expected to grow 30-40% over the next decade.

Project Developer Mark Johnston told Mike Hosking the development will include a 55-hectare inland port, offering freight storage and connected to the South Island’s main trunk rail line.

He says it will be similar to Hamilton's Ruakura inland port and offer land for other industrial development.

developers and he's with us Mark morning, Mike. Is this
like the Hamilton super Hub?

Speaker 2 (00:27):
It's similar, Similar, Mike, that's right down, similar to Recura.

be land available to develop warehousing and other industrial buildings.

Is it movement or storage or both?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
It'll be both, okay.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
So being south of Dunedin. The beauty of the Ruakura
thing is it's part of the diamond, the triangle, whatever
shape you want to call it. What what's Milton part of?

Speaker 2 (01:35):
That's right, that's right. The land is zoned industrial. It
was rezoned several years ago in the community had a
chance to consult on it back then. So we're just
working through the mask plan now and we'll be lodging
for recless content later on the year and building contents
to follow.

And the time frame roughly in the beast of all
possible worlds.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Good. Are you part of the US track?

Speaker 2 (02:01):
No, we're not, because the land is already zoned. We
don't need to use the first track X for this project,
which is which is encouraging.
