Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm Rosie Perez with iHeartMedia and here's another episode of
See as you Should Know. I'm super excited to have
the vice president of KM Builders Home Remodeling in Morgan
Roberts Morgan. So what inspired you to pursue a leadership
role in home building and remodeling.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
I care a lot about like the impact of our
company and the impact that we have in San Antonio
in the homes. You know, people's houses are extremely personal
and it's a really big investment that they make. So
being able to be a part of how we transform
people's everyday lives through making their homes a better and
easier place to live is really meaningful. I also saw

(00:41):
an opportunity to help bring a fresh perspective to the industry.
You know, my dad has years and decades of experience
with all of his craftsmanship, and that's what KAM Builders
is really known for. But I was able to bring
in design and fresh eyes with organization and making sure
that our clients have the best experience possible along with

(01:03):
the craftsmanship that we're known for.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
You spoke a little bit about the presence of CAM
Builders and the quality CAN Builders has a strong presence
in San Antonio and has for a really long time.
How do you personally connect and give back to the community.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Well, I was born and raised in San Antonio, so
it really matters. It's home and being able to work
in people's homes, it makes it feel it's very personal,
the community relationship that we have. But giving back to
our community is more than just giving back, but it
means to me like being a company that people can

(01:39):
really trust and one that does what we say we're
going to do and stands by our work and doesn't
take advantage of our community and our homeowners in our community,
remodeling is a scary thing for a lot of people
and it can be very risky. By being a company
that is honest, reliable, and we take accountability for ever

(02:00):
everything that we do, That's how I view that we're
able to give.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Back to our community.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
We want the community to know that when they work
with KM builders, that they're protected and that.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
We care for them. I love that.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
So, you know, you talked a little bit about home
ownership and homer modeling, and you know, my home is
my sanctuary. So it's where after a crazy day at
work or whatever the case is, I go and I
really that's where I relaxed, right, So it's really personal
what you guys are doing, and you know there are
a lot of values that you just talked about. Tell

(02:34):
me a little bit about what values really guide you
professionally and personally, and actually, before you start, I recently
met with you and your father, and one of the
things I loved most that he did is he said
that he personally makes a phone call to each and
every customer after the model is done to really go
over and make sure they're really, really happy with what

(02:56):
they're doing. And I think that that is not done enough,
especially when you invest a lot of money into your sanctuary,
your home right. So I know that that integrity is
a big piece for you guys. Yeah, but what other
values guide you both professionally and personally.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, I mean we, like you said, integrity is it's
the key of everything within our company, and I definitely
learned that from my dad. But also i'd say we
take like extreme accountability for what we do when and
I do that, and we all do that with our
coworkers and who we employ and who we have the

(03:34):
privilege to work with with vendors, and then especially with
our clients. We don't try and pull the wool over
their eyes and make sure that, you know, hide things.
We want to make sure that we are doing everything right,
and we take ownership of if things are going wrong,
we take ownership. When hey, we didn't see this, We're

(03:54):
going to take ownership. We're gonna fix this and make
it right for you because we care about you. Because,
like you said, it's very emotional and it's a very
high investment what they're doing with us, So we don't
take that for granted.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
We also treat every home.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Every client, everyone that we work with with respect, and
we expect that back in return. But it's because we
lead with that first and we're able to then have
a really great business relationship. And that's how Dad's been
in business for over forty years is by treating everyone
that he interacts with with respect. And that goes all
the way down to every single employee, our trim carpenters,

(04:31):
our interior designers, extreme accountability and respect for each other.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
I think that's incredible. And one of the things that
I read about you, which I thought was amazing is
that you really are a very strategic and visionary leader.
So with that being said, tell me what's next for
KM Builders. What excites you the most about the future
of the company.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
I'm really excited for our intentional growth. So you can
have growth and it can be a extreme and you
can just like run past everybody and you know, double
your sales volume, double the amount of like jobs that
you're doing. But does that is that helpful for the client?
That is that giving the same experience that we were

(05:13):
giving before. So our intentional growth is what we're really
looking for and how we grow, what clients we take
making sure that they get the K and Builders experience
that we're known for while we're able to take those
measured growing steps, and that's like our growth in what
we're looking for is to elevate our work, elevate our designs,

(05:37):
get better so that way our clients are at that
extra level and we're adding that value back to the
community but also back to us with having a great
place to work for all of our employees and a
great company that San Antonio can trust.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Okay, So I wanted to talk with you a little
bit about an article that I read in San Antonio
magazine about how CAM Builders was approached by HDTV's Smart
Home and you guys were brought in on a project,
and I thought that was super exciting, So tell me
how that came about.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
It was so cool.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
They emailed us out of the blue, and honestly, I
thought it was a scam, so did.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
Three other people in our company.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
But Dad didn't, and he responded to the email and
they were saying, Hey, we're we're a production company with HGTV.
We're looking to do a remodeling project in San Antonio.
Can we meet with y'all? He met with them on
the phone. Then they flew into San Antonio and we
had an interview with them, and they interviewed I think

(06:41):
some other remodeling companies, and we didn't hear from them
for a few months. But then they called us back
and said, hey, we bought a house or we're by like,
we've selected a house to buy. When can y'all start?
So we started the design process with them. So we
did all of the designs, all the architectural designs.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
They came into our office, we did a lot over.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Zoom and then we did the entire remodel of that
HGTV smart home. So I mean that it transformed every
single part of that house and so it was a
their Smart Home twenty twenty five remodel. We completely changed
the location of bedrooms bathrooms, move them across the house.

(07:26):
We added square footage, but without actually having to expand
the house, so we added a second story, but within
their attic they had a really tall attic space. It
was just it's one of the coolest projects. It's not
the coolest projects that we did. And after it was
all said and done, we had their like punch list

(07:46):
walk through that we met with the HGTV executives and
oh my goodness, I was so nervous for that and
I'm like, what are they going to do? This is
gonna be so scary. And they walked through the house
and I'm kind of sitting there on the stairs and they're.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
Like, Okay, we're ready, and I kid you not.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
They had a list of like six things and they
tell us, they're like, this is the shortest punch list
we've ever had in our history of doing all of
the dream homes, the smart homes, like everything that they
do every year, that's typically at least two or three
of these twice a year, And that was just the
best compliment that we've ever received. And that was not

(08:21):
the only project. That we were running twenty other projects
at the same time as doing that remodel.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
So it was a real testament.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Like it was like if we could do that and
we did it successfully, and we did it without you know,
dying and pulling our hair out, because it's very intense,
it's very it's the fastest remodel probably that we've had
to do. But they paid for that, and they paid
for the service of working overtime and extra you know,

(08:49):
on the weekends, all these type of things. It was
a real testament to our company to be able to
accomplish that, do so successfully and be able to have
that in our portfolio.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
That's incredible and it's a huge compliment. Yeah, a huge
compliment to you and your dad's company. So if you
could leave our listeners with one piece of advice about
leadership and resilience, what would it be.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Remember that leadership isn't about being perfect. You have to
own your mistakes, be extremely honest with everybody that you're
working with. But you have to be consistent. That's the
most important thing. So if you're consistently showing up, everyone's
seeing you consistently working hard either for their project or
for them as an employee or for the company. They're

(09:34):
going to want to follow that because that's showing how
much you care. So you are going to make mistakes.
We all make mistakes and in leadership and as we
are going through business, but owning them and being a
one hundred percent accountable for the mistakes is going to
show that you're trustworthy.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
No, I love that.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
That's fantastic.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
I think I read something about how leaders set the
temperature in an vironment, and so I think it's amazing
that you're right showing up every day giving one hundred
percent to both your employees your clients. It really sets
the tone for a total business.

Speaker 3 (10:11):
Yeah. I mean this last year wasn't easy.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
There's a lot of economic uncertainty that happened, and it's
easy for the people that you work with to if
they see that you're freaking out and you don't know
what to do or you're giving up, they're going to
give up. But seeing them them see you work so
hard and like, no, we're doing this. Look, this is
our plan. Sharing what our plan is and how we're

(10:34):
going to get through this. That I think really helped
us through this year and to continue to be successful,
but also like have a really awesome core group of
people that we work with.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
What advice would you give young women aspiring to leadership
roles in traditionally male dominated industries.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
I would say to not wait to do it until
you feel completely ready. Just do it because your confidence
will grow from jumping into that role, from executing and
doing those things. So ask your questions, don't hesitate to
ask questions, and don't feel like you're going to feel
stupid or dumb, but realize that you have a job

(11:13):
to do. You can learn as you go and confidently
do so.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
Second thing I wanted to ask, so, how do you
see the role of women in business evolving in the
next decade.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
I think that women who are stepping into leadership roles,
especially in this type of male dominated industry, are going
to come to a sensus of being able to lead
how they want to lead, not like how a man should.
And we're going to be able to do that successfully, gracefully, easily,

(11:44):
confidently just being ourselves and being able to do that
and people see, yes, this is someone who I want
to be like. But we don't have to do it
just like how a man would do it. We can
do it, how we can do it well. Thank you
so much for joy Us, for CEOs. You should know
again this was Morgan Roberts with KM builders.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Thank you so much, Thank you,
