Speaker 1 (00:28):
Thank you, nephew. Subject She's picking up what I'm putting down.
Dear Stephen Shirley, one of my best girlfriends was sleeping
with my husband, and I feel like a fool for
trusting her. She was smiling in my face and acting
like she and my husband couldn't stand each other. It
was like Martin and Pam's relationship back in the day.
I sent my husband to her house for years whenever

(00:50):
she needed help with minor things. The most shocking part
was that my husband told me everything after he'd been
trying to end the affair for months. He saved tech
messages from the beginning of their relationship, and it showed
that she initiated everything. She finally admitted everything, and she's
been working hard to be my friend since then. I

(01:11):
never put my husband out or acted a fool, and
that's what bothered her most. I made a commitment to him,
not to her. Since that drama, I have started a
counseling service for all the couples in our friends group
that I've dealt with cheating. Most times, my husband is
present to offer his two cents. I was stunned to
see my man stealing girlfriend pop up at a virtual session.

(01:35):
She testified that she's involved with another married man and
she's in search of guidance so she can stop the
cycle of being a mistress. I told her I could
not help her and told her to log off. Then
she sent a long text to me saying that I
was capitalizing off her pain and if she hadn't slept
with my husband, I would not be able to counsel anyone.

(02:00):
She wants to be a partner with me, or she's
going to sue me for her using her personal story.
She keeps picking up what I'm putting down. How do
I avoid this chick? Do I owe her anything? Now?
Come on, you owe her nothing?

Speaker 2 (02:18):
You know that?

Speaker 1 (02:20):
How dares she try to sue you for the pain
she caused. She would get left out of the courtroom
because she has no case. Really, something is wrong with her.
If you want to know the truth, you're telling your
stories one of lies to see, betrayal, cheating, all of that,
and you have every right to tell your truth. And
may I say congratulations to you for doing that, for

(02:40):
helping these people. I'm sure it's healing you in the process.
And her trifling story is one we've all heard before.
How she pretended to be your friend, she was smiling
in your face and all that, all the while sleeping
with your husband. It's the side Hicks story, the mistress,
the low self esteem story. That's what it is. You,

(03:01):
on the other hand, have turned your pain into a
way to help others that have gone through similar situations.
Now she's threatening to sue you. She is beyond trifling.
Your husband eventually figured it out even and that's why
he's trying to get away from her. He was trying
to get away from her and come clean to you.
Now he's helping you with your business. Yes, you made

(03:22):
a commitment to him, not her, but he made a
commitment to you too, and he broke that So if
you're taking him back, and it sounds like you are,
please make sure you guys do the work that's needed
to be done on your marriage. And as for her,
stop talking to her, don't take her phone calls, her
text messages, don't do any of that. If you have
to get a restraining order, she's crazy, this woman.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Steve, It's about the craziest message. I really appreciate this
letter because it's an angle hanging seen before the whole
deal is one of my best girlfriends. See when I
hear a letter to start like that, Steven Shilling one
of my best girlfriends.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Now that means it's some more someway.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
So if this is your best bff, one of them,
happily miss it.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
And you really need to start rethinking your friendship.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
This because if this is one of your best friends,
what is these other one doing? Because I believe you
don't know how to pick him night, see cause friends
you get to pick it. Ain't like family for sleeping
with my husband. I feel like a fool for trusting
her smiling in my face. Her and her husband act
like they couldn't stand each other, And then you would

(04:37):
send her husband over to her house for years, whenever
she needed help with minor things, Baby, gone over there
and help her.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
You know, I can't stand her maybe going over there, Okay.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
The most shocking part that you think it was shocking
for you, lady. The most shocking part was that my
husband told me everything after he been trying to end
the affair for months.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
What the fact that he told her everything? You're shocked,
and you shocked, Steve, she shocked.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
The most shocking part was that my husband told me everything.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
What why ain't worth or something? Why?

Speaker 3 (05:26):
He saved texts from the beginning of the relationship, and
it showed she initiated everything, saved text what she finally
admitted everything?

Speaker 2 (05:37):
So what it really wasn't her.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
You didn't find out nor other way except your husband
just came to you and admitted. Then she finally admitted everything.
And she's been working hard to be my friends since then.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
That ain't gonna happen.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
What he mean working hard to be my friends, sister,
and I thought we was friend That's why, girl, I've
never put my husband out of acting. The food that's
what bothered her most. I made a commitment to him,
not to her. That's well, that's yes, y'all since that drama.
To hear the part, I've started a counseling service for
all of the couples in our friendship group that have

(06:16):
dealt with cheating.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Damn, you need a whole lot of new friends.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
You girl a neputate your best girl friend cheated with
your man. Then I've started a counseling service for all
of the couples.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
In our friend groups that have dealt with cheating. Damn.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
Hang on, Steve, hang on, we'll have part two of
your response to add to minutes after the hour. Today's
Strawberry letter. Subject She's picking up what I'm putting down.
We'll get back into it right after this. You're listening
morning show. All right, come on, Steve, let's recap today's
strawberry letter. The subject is she's picking up what I'm

(07:01):
putting down.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Uh. This lady fell out with one of her BFFs
for cheating with her husband.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
And she said, this is one.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
Of her girlfriends, which lets me know it's some more
of them somewhere. But if this is your BFF, then
you need to reassess how you pick friends.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
Anyway, the girlfriend and her husband act like they didn't
like each other, and for years she would send her
husband over to her girlfriend's house to help her fix
minor things.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Then she was over there fixing a whole lot of stuff.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Then she said, the most shocking part was that my
husband told me everything after he been trying to end
their fare for months. That is the most shocking thing. Shocking, No,
because it ain't like the lady told him. He just
came in there, yes, and just said. Look, he didn't

(07:57):
get caught or nut.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
He just came in. Now. It shot her. It shocked
me most. What did you go in here with this move?

Speaker 3 (08:09):
And then he's saying tech from the beginning of the relationship,
and it showed she initiated everything.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
He said, tech, Uh huh, who do this?

Speaker 3 (08:20):
She finally admitted everything, and she's been working hard to
be my friend since then.

to here and mitting all this here?

Speaker 2 (08:56):

Speaker 3 (08:58):
How y'all know everybody in your friend group is in
counseling with you because all your friend group is dealt
with she eating, damn? And then she said, most times
my husband is present to offer his two cents. What
I'm sitting up here in the counseling group offering my

a minute I told her I cannot help her and
told her to log off. Then she sent along text
to me saying that I was capitalizing off her pain
and if she hadn't slept with my husband, I wouldn't

to partner. Oh, she's going to suit me for using
her personal story. Excuse me, that's y'all story. That's your

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
