Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining me live in the studio is the Acting Assistant
Commissioner for the Northern Territory Police Peter Maley.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Good morning to you, Good morning, Coty.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
Good to have you on the show. Now, before we
get into some of the incidents that you guys have
been called out to over our recent days, I know
we're due to catch up with the Northern Territory Police Association,
the union saying it's well, there's a clear show of
unity and frustration at the moment with one and twenty
members of the anti police force. We'll voting against the

(00:32):
government's latest payoffer. Peter, what do you make of it?

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Yeah, it's overwhelming that we have eighty one percent voting
against it and the association gave the membership, you know,
their advice and that was to vote no, and that
they've certainly done that. So yeah, that'll go back to
the government now and we'll wait and see what happens.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
Yeah, we'll see what happens next and we will catch
up with, like I said, the Northern Territory Police Association
president shortly, so we'll go into bit more detail about
it then. Now there's a bit happening. There was a
fire overnight Northern Territory Police and also Fire and Rescue
Service obviously called out to this structure fire which happened
in perap Well just after five o'clock this morning. How

(01:17):
many occupants were inside that building?

Speaker 3 (01:19):
There was two in there, Cotie. They were able to
get out safely with no serious injuries. Investigations are ongoing,
but it's very early so I don't have a cause
of the fire or anything at this stage, but fire
investigators will be there this morning with the police and
for egics and we'll come up with the cause of
that very quickly.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Yes, I guess no word at this point in time
as to whether it's suspicious or not. All right, we'll
keep an eye on that now. As I said, a
bit to cover, I want to head to Central Australia. Well,
first off, we started the week with some good news.
A twenty six year old man who'd been missing for
five days. Well, he was found near one of the communities,

(01:59):
some local women there actually spotting him first. I mean,
this is it's quite the story of survival really.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Absolutely, Cady.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Yeah, So look, we held serious concerns for his welfare.
You know, it's very cold overnight down in the desert.
So but yeah, great news that he was found safe
and well, and yeah, it's a it's a great story
of survival. But we put a lot of resources into
locating him, a lot of work when in there for
that week. So a great result at the end of it.

(02:30):
But you know, it was a dre on police resources,
but we're happy with the result.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Well, and obviously the police search had sort of been
called off by that stage, hadn't it. And just it
turned out that then he was sort of seen staggering
into the community I guess dehydrated and presumably struggling after
being lost for quite a long time.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Yes, absolutely, Catie.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
And yeah, we we figured that, you know, maybe we'd
moved in from a rescue mission into a recovery mission.
But great news we got him back.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Yeah, it is good news. Hey, I'm also in Central Australia.
Some pretty ordinary news overnight. Northern Territory police had to
arrest six mail offenders after a stolen car that they
were traveling in rammed a police vehicle in Alice Springs.
Now this happened just after eleven o'clock. An unmarked police
car observed a beij Toyota land Cruiser. Now it was

(03:27):
driving in Gillen. This land cruiser had previously been reported stolen,
stolen on the weekend. It's then driven at the police
car without any warning, ramming at are those police officers? Okay?

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yeah, look police officers.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Was taken to a hospital just for a precautionary assessment,
but wasn't injured luckily. But you know, it was really serious,
risky behavior and we understand that our job's dangerous, but
you know, we don't need that sort of behavior. But strikeforce,
fireer in general duties members would deploy and police drow

(04:02):
and CCTV operators. We located and tracked the vehicle to
Saturday and where it was abandoned. But we saw eleven
occupants getting out of that vehicle and we arrested six
males fourteen, fourteen, fifteen, fifteen at sixteen, and a twenty
year old as well, and they were all arrested. They
remain in police custody with investigations ongoing at the moment.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
But yeah, just so it is crazy, five of them
still remain outstanding. I mean, it's like when you look
at the ages and you look at the fact that
you've got someone there that's twenty that's on an adult
meant to be an adult. And then you've got these
young ones fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen, and goodness knows the
ages of the others that have been involved here, but like,

(04:48):
it just sort of makes me question whether you've got
the older you know, the older offenders encouraging the young
ones to get up to no good. I don't know,
well whether they're all in it together.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Yeah, I don't know either, Cody.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
But obviously you'd expect a twenty year old would exhibit
a little bit more maturity in relation to this risky behavior.
You know, fourteen year olds on board style a vehicle
driving at police.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
I've got a child that age, Like, there is no
way that a fourteen year old knows how to drive
a car properly. I don't know who was behind the wheel,
But then ramming it at a police vehicle is just
a borring behavior.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
It is, Codie. Look, it's really serious offending.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
And we'll wait and see what charges will be, you know,
hopefully they can identify the driver because that'll be the
serious offending. But yeah, yes, it's still investigations ongoing.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Now.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Well, yesterday we received a statement from the Northern Territory
police saying that on Monday night at about six forty
five well a woman was allegedly robbed by two youths
while walking near Robin Leslie Park. Now, the alleged victim
was approached by a male and a female youth, one
of which was armed with an edged weapon, who did
her phone and money. A short time later, the Casuarina

(06:04):
General Duties Offices located and arrested three youths. Now in
this case, they were ten, twelve and fourteen holding a
woman up, allegedly with on each weapon presumably a knife. Again, like,
I cannot wrap my head around kids this young being
involved in such serious offending.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
No, it's very troubling, Katie, ten, twelve and fourteen. So
the fourteen year old female was the girl that was
arrested for the aggravated robbery and the ten or twelve
year old were arrested four breaches of bail, So both
before the courts and engaging in.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
And they're already on bail yep at ten and.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Twelve crazy risky behavior. And look, at the end of
the day, it's really serious offending.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
It is. It's incredibly serious, and you know, you think
about the victim and how frightening it had been, and
you're thinking to yourself, Oh, they're little kids. But then
if they've got an edged weapon, it's like, you know,
all bets are off. It's buddy scary.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
Yeah, it's really traumatic for the victims of these type
street offenses. Yeah, and we'll put them before the courts
and they'll be hedle caountable for their actions.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Well, which it sounds as though they are already. Well,
one of them is going to face court, I believe,
either today or yesterday. So we'll keep an eye on
things as best we can. Peter, I want to ask you.
I understand that the Northern Territory Police have actually been
out in what Air conducting some some investigations and getting
some work done out there.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
What's going on, correct, Coatie.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
So over the weekend we ran a proactive traffic operation
on the what Air Main access road and Saturday at
around six thirty pm, we searched a vehicle coming into
the community and seize forty three bottles to run from
that vehicle and that total will be thirty five letters
of alcohol. So a significant seizure of alcohol going into

(08:00):
a remote community. We arrested a twenty three year old
male who was charged with a number of traffic offenses
and liquor related offenses and he'll be appearing in what
are caught on the ninth of September, And we also
seized the vehicle.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Was he a local figure?

Speaker 2 (08:16):
Wise?

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Yesh, forty three bottles of rum? What kind of street
belly do you reckon that had had?

Speaker 3 (08:22):
So they also got another four bottles to run from
another vehicle, and they picked up two hundred and forty
grand of cannabis as well. So overall the alcohol in
the cannabis is about seventy four thousand dollars.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
So holy moly, how much to people? Like how much
are they selling a bottle of rum for?

Speaker 2 (08:40):
On the straight can go for three or four hundred bucks?

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Holy molely. And that's and obviously, you know people want it.
What is dry like, it's obviously a dry community. So
then you've got a situation where people are trying to
take you know, trying to get alcohol in there. So
presumably they can profit of selling it.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
Absolutely secondary supplies all about cash.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
I mean, what kind of impact then do you think
it has more broadly in terms of that alcohol not
being distributed throughout the community.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
Really hard one to measure, but in terms of domestic
violence and other violence offenses, it's absolutely huge. I mean,
this could have prevented a homicide.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
So in terms of you know, the police doing these
kind of operations as well, where you're sort of you know,
you're going on to the main roads that lead into
some of the various communities around the Northern Territory that
are dry. Is that something that you're planning on doing
a bit more off when we.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
Have the time and the resources, we definitely want to
do it. We have to be a proactive police force
involved in crime prevention, not just reacting. And if we're
just reacting to crime, we're out of business. So we
need to be doing that crime prevention piece and that's
part of what we were doing there at.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
What Air Well.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
Acting Assistant Commissioner Peter Maley really appreciate your time this morning.
Thank you very much for joining us on the show.
Thanks Katie, thank you
