Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, there's no shortage of police news to cover off
on this morning. And joining me in the studio is
the acting commander for the Darwin Region, David Moore. Good
morning to you, David.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Good morning Kati and to the listeners.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
Yeah. Good to have you in the studio this morning,
especially considering that the Northern Territory Police yesterday eleven youths
and two adults arrested following multiple separate stolen cars in
the early hours of yesterday morning. I mean, this is
quite a large operation.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Talk us through it.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
Yeah, thank you, Katie. And unfortunately we do seem well.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
I have reported on.
Speaker 4 (00:34):
This numerous times, particularly around events and particularly around a
larger organized community events that we have in Darwin. Seems
to bring sort of a cohort into Darwin. I will
talk to it though.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
So what I can say is that we had eleven
yews and two adults have been arrested and that's in
relation to multiple separate stolen Marta vehicles early this morning.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Well yesterday May yesterday morning, I must.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
Say, yeah, so it was between twelve thirty am and
twelve forty five.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Five am, so very early in the morning.
Speaker 4 (01:01):
So our communications center obviously received a report of a
white Tighter land Cruiser utility and a gray Nissa Navarre
Duel cab driving danishly through Stuart Park. The offending vehicles
obviously were then noticed to be hitting several other park
cars and hooning through the area, so that obviously grabbed height.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
And attention by the police.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
We then in conducted patrols and obviously were enabled at
that stage to locate the vehicles they'd obviously taken off
from that so about two thirty am a separate incident
was picked up by the CCTV operators where a white
Tighter land Cruiser station wagon had been stolen from address
in the city.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
In the city.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
Traveling to Wogerman and stopped and boundle and drive. Five
occupants exited the land Cruiser and allegedly attempted to steal
a second vehicle that was parked in front of that residence.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
It was an ongone crimes freeze.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
Police attended and arrested three of the five offenders and
two of those offenders were fleeing the scene on foot
at that stage. A round four am it continued, so
it was a separate incident again reported to police with
the white Twayer land Cruiser utility was seen driving through
Sicli before stopping on Scobi Street. Six US were then
seen exiting the vehicle and allegedly jumped the fence to
(02:14):
multiple nearby properties. Strikeforce tried and our dog operations unit
that stage were on the scene, which was excellent and
they had a coresponded response. They actually located and arrested
six of the US from the surrounding streets. That was
a pretty big operation through the whole night. The land
cruise was confirmed to be stolen from Addressing Johnson. So
around seven am it further went on that Adelaide River
(02:37):
Police and responded to reports of a crashed Silver Niss
and Nevara on the Stuart Highway just north of the township.
The vehicle was confirmed to be stolen from Stuart Park,
with the two adults and two US being arrested at
the scene and that would conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital
for treatment with non no life threatening injuries.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
So they then crashed that via correct Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
So in a separate incident, a fourth group of alleged
defenders traveled a Star high Lays from what Eyed to
Darwin where they stole a white tidal land crazy utility
and a white to a high high lux in Culen Bay.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
So they'd stolen the high ace in what.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
A correct and brought it then to day to dar
obviously to have transportation here to grab further cars and
do further offending. Strikeforks tried and then located that high
lux abandoned in Mauldon and the tighter HiAce abandoned in Darwin, CBD.
The offenders did remain outstanding at that cape at that stage.
So investigations continued obviously into the night and into the day,
(03:33):
and they do not believe.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
The four incidents were actually linked. So it wasn't one.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
There several groups, several groups doing several different things.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Were they all from whatever well I.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
Can say is mid Yes, majority of them. We're from
the Daily River region. Ok So we are talking about
the what eye at the round beginning, we're talking about
the not round beginning. So we're talking about what I
plumpa Daily River?
Speaker 3 (03:54):
All that is okay?
Speaker 1 (03:55):
So is there some work happening now with the police,
you know, in the those areas and in those communities,
because it's like it sort of seems clear to me
that we've got a real issue with I don't know
whether they're all young people or people of all ages,
but certainly I've interviewed Dale malt Barnard before from Trident
about this as well. It seems like we've got an
(04:15):
issue with people traveling in from some of those communities,
particularly in the Daily region and just running a mark. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
So, as I was highlighted at the start of the
interview that the larger events in Darwin, such as Base
in the gar such as the AFL forty, we had
two weekends of that a Thursday and a Saturday night
where it brought in large crowds and when we saw
craws are up to fifteen eleven thousand, et cetera. They
are bringing in Obviously a lot of people come in
to see those ten those events and participate. As a
(04:46):
result of that, unfortunately use or obviously then get together
they decide that they're going to offend. It's easy opportunity
they feel coming to Darwen to do that.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Some of the look some of the.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
Mitigation strategies that I put into place with adel Aid
River Daily River in conjunction with Catherine and the Commander
of Catherine.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
I believe you'll speak speaking to Terry tomorrow he will
go into a little bit more.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
We do roadblocks, we do declared areas for drugs, and
we do searching vehicles. It was only just last week
we did Adelaide River roadblock and we found sixty bottles
of heading for the Wadeye region, which we apprehended in
the whole lot of marijuana right so that bottles. So
as a result of that, for that weekend, we had
(05:29):
very haighly need domestic violence or any offending within that
region because we were able to apprehend at that stage.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
They are strategies we can put into place.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
But really, and I'll let Terry talk about tomorrow a
little bit more. Not stealing his thunder, but obviously he's
been visiting that area quite a bit and working with
other agencies in relation to it. But if I may
just wrap up quickly on just these us.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
And where they see, what's going with them.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
So, as I said that, we had a total of
eleven US aged between twelve and seventeen and two adults
and they were aged between eighteen nineteen. Eight of those
used were suitable for diversion, so they didn't have a
lot of criminal history. If an okay, So that would
be one of the reasons, and obviously properly related to
a different date that we appear in court. One was
(06:14):
charged and remanded to appear at a later date, so
they had prior history and obviously the new legislation that
comes in.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Yeah, any idea how old those youths were that were
suitable for diversion.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
Yeah, My understanding was we had a number of them
at the age of thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, and a couple
at seventeen.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Okay, I mean not a good like, not on a
good path at this point in time. If they're hanging
out with kids that are older than them and engaging
in stealing cars. I mean, this is the kind of
thing where I think, you know, there needs to be
that early intervention to try and stop them from continuing.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
On this path. There's no doubt about that.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
But we just seem to have a real issue like
with that region right now in terms of people of
all ages coming in stealing cars. I mean the land
crews as the older model Toyot has seemed to be
the victim of choice. And you've touched on some of
the different initiatives that the police are doing, but you
know what work is happening as well. And I don't
(07:10):
know whether this is a question for the police, but
what work is happening from the perspective of elders in
the community as well, putting their foot down, going this
is not good enough. Few kids have got to stop
traveling into town and conducting yourselves in this way. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Well, particularly to get into the nitty gritties of in
relation to elders and in relation to programs in those communities,
I'll leave a part of that question for the two
commanders in those areas because obviously I control Greater Darwin
and I feel the effects of some of the of
the issues coming out.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
But however, I do.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
Chair the integrated Community meeting, which obviously has a number
of agencies sitting on it, and that we talk about strategies.
We talk about issues that involves Lara cair nation and
involves housing, It involves education, and it involves all those
territory families, police corrections, et cetera. So it involves all
those agencies, and we look at mid creation strategies in
(08:01):
relation to trying to reduce some of this. So we're
seeing those issues. What is the top end regionalor co wort,
which is what I report to. It's the high level
one of government that looks at some of the programs
and some of the things that we can do with this.
So this is an issue I know they are working
on obviously. Unfortunately, please respond to these incidents. They are
heavily involved in trying to mitigate it.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
But we're not the lead agency on that.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
But there needs to be some other Yeah, what leave
some of that for commandity? No, that's fine.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Yeah, we'll definitely be keen to talk more about it tomorrow. Hey,
before I do move on from that topic, though, I
know you said sometimes events bring people into town from
different locations. There's also been reports that in some instances
you're talking some royalty payments as well. I mean, does
that ever have an impact?
Speaker 4 (08:44):
Yeah, it does because with royalty payments, quite often there
are quite large sums of money.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
We receive that information than information and then.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
Given to a number of stakeholders that I engage with
just to be aware center management, for example, a cas
Aarina set we're going. You've seen the influx of people
coming in, particularly from different clans and different regions, because
they want to shop, they want to buy.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
You've got money, which is fair enous.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
Absolutely, they buy the cars, they do whatever they need
to do.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
There's nothing wrong with that.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
And obviously that's great for our tourism and for our
business up here and the money being put back into
the economy. But that does bring an influx of people.
That brings an influx of youth and kids. So part
of that, yes, can be attributed.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Not I wouldn't say solely.
Speaker 4 (09:30):
I think, particularly around some of these communities and regions,
the element of boredom is another aspect within. There's not
a lot of programs and I'm aware in some of
these communities, particularly around God Eye, and that they are
doing a lot that they're trying to fix some of
these issues. So the kids come into town, it's easy,
it's an opportunity for them. And unfortunately we're seeing now
kids at the age of thirteen years of age without
(09:52):
criminal history coming before the court. That's a different cohort
than what we've probably dealt with.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
In the last time.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
Yeah, which we just do not want to say, hey,
I want to move along, because we've also had some
serious issues on our roads. Unfortunately, this morning we have
now learned as well that a female has died in
hospital following a pedestrian striking Palmerston on Thursday last week.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
Yeah, I believe it was touched on just before I
came on your media segment. I just want to probably
give an update to that. We were reporting in the
media that the pedestrian that has died was I was
sixty five. That's not correct. She's actually eighty years I
just want to correct that. The family's obviously reached out
to us, and so we'd like to correct that on
the record today.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
It is a tragedy, it's terrible.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
Just a little bit about that incident in case the
listeners haven't picked up on what actually occurred.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
On that today.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
So what was saying is a forty three year old
male has actually been arrested for the pedestrian strike. This
is on the fifteenth of May and Palmeston, so we
do have an arrest for that, and it curred about
nine to fifty five am where our Police Communications Center
reports that a woman on a mobility scooter had been
struck by a vehicle and she was using a pedestrian
on Temple Terraces at that time.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Just horrible, it's horrible.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
We'd had a call on that day from Dave I
believe it was a bloke that listens to the show.
He was working up the road and said that, yeah,
it was a terrible situation that she'd been on.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
That he believed on that.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Yeah, so it wasn't.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
The drive at the scene was obviously forty three years
of age. He did remain on the scene and was
and that did return a positive road side drug test
and was arrested, so he was under the influence. So
obviously before the court that road was closed for a
period of time and obviously we've moved on since then,
but I just liked to about update. Unfortunately, that does
(11:36):
bring our lives in the territory now at sixteen. We
had twenty two at this stage last year and a
title of sixty last year. We're starting to climb.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
We are. So we've had an absolute chockra I mean
last week was terrible out in Palmerston and then we
saw in one of those situations, as I understand it,
a bloke had fled from the scene as well after
being involved in a crash.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
The police have now managed to apprehend him though.
Speaker 4 (12:01):
That's correct, Yeah, and that's it's probably that goes to
a further update here. We actually have the Task Force
Police Task Force Fugitive Squad actually arrested a man who
fled that scene of that accident, and obviously a thirty
eight year old man has now been arrested and the
incident occurred in Pharaoh without any incident, so he was
arrested within the Palmerston region. He's currently in custoin obviously
(12:22):
assisting us to their investigations.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
And that occurred on Kirkland Road.
Speaker 4 (12:25):
As as you've stated, we do have two male occupants
being eighty and thirty five who were conveyed to hospital
and stable conditions from that accent. But of course we've
obviously had a thirty six year old that's pasted and
lost their life.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
Yeah, just another tragedy.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
And I guess another reminder as well for everybody out
there listening, like we have to do the right thing
on our roads and in this instance will learn in
some of these different instances, it seems as though people
have been engaging.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
In the wrong behavior on our roads, you.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
Know, allegedly, particularly with that situation where the eighty year
old woman was struck by a vehicle. If that man's
allegedly under the influence, I mean, it's a terrible situation.
We have to have a bit more respect for each
other and also think to yourself, you know, can you
imagine if your mum was hit by a car, if
your grandma was hit by a car while she's trying
to cross the road, or have a bit of a
(13:17):
think to yourself, you know you're crash into somebody else,
you could be taking out a dad.
Speaker 4 (13:22):
Yeah, I mean, Katie, I can't emphasize any more than
you have there just to say that it's an individual
choice when you get behind a vehicle. We police will
be doing serious campaigns. We have been anyway, but we'll
be doing further, particularly with the Ryal Dahuin show coming.
As well as the show's up and down the territory,
we will be running an operation called Akerman and I
believe Commander James Grace Spence from Alice Springs is leading
(13:44):
that with myself and Commander Terry Zang, we will be
putting a lot of resources up and down the road
to do like a traveling show. I don't need to
attend the event to obviously put a lot of road traffic,
a lot of apprehensions, a lot of enforcement, particularly around
our borders as well.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
So it's going to be some more dedicated work, but good.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
We've got to do something too, too, and it really
comes down to an individual choice when you get behind
the wheel, do the right thing, get us be sober.
If you out sober, get someone else to dry worth
you give your seat belt succession the five fatalities as Yeah,
sixteen is too many.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
Yeah, it truly is.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
Well, Acting Commander David Moore, good to speak with you
this morning. Really appreciate your time. Thank you very much
for joining me in the studio.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Thank you everyone, have a good day.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Thank you.
