Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now joining me live in the studio is the acting
Commander of the Darwin Region for the Northern Territory Police,
Sean Gill. Good morning to you.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Sean, morning Coaty.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Good to have you in the studio. Thanks so much
for your time this morning. Now, there's been a few
incidents over the last few days, well, certainly over the
weekend that I reckon concerned people. One in particular that
disturbance at per Rap where we had a situation where
it sounds like it was a brawl at Perap about
one five in the AVO on Saturday, and then the

(00:30):
two security guards were assaulted by a group of up
to twenty people.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Oh that's right, Yeah, that's right, Coty. So as you
said before, there was two security guards in the area
were assorted by approximately twenty twenty people. Police attended. Two
adult males are arrested and they've been released penning investigations.
So in general terms, the investigation is still going on
with regards to that manner, but also you know, like

(00:56):
consulting security guards whoever's doing their job and the line
of their duties is just not on. So we'll be
investigating following sub as hard as we can.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Yeah, look, and then you know in that pressure release
it says they had bottles and sticks, like, are we
talking big? What are we talking here? Look?

Speaker 2 (01:15):
I don't have specific details, but you know, in terms
of general bottles and sticks, it's usually stuff that's very
close and handy and pick up and the like as well,
So they can range from trees and tree branches and
the like, as well as saying though it's just it's
just not on and picking up any of that sort
of stuff to hurt somebody while they're trying to lawfully
do their job. Yeah, it's just not going to be.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Stood for, no, absolutely, And then when you hear that
both security guards they were obviously injured, one of them
suffering suspected fractures. Both conveyed to Royal dal And Hospital.
It's ordinary stuff. There has been a couple of people arrested,
but no doubt police still calling for some info of so, yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
If there's any they've got any information, they bring us
a one three, one trip or four YELP or on
crime stoppers in this any information you can give where
it can be anonymous as well.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Yeah. The other one that was really disturbing over the
weekend was this one where workers at the Nightcliff shopping
center ended up being assaulted. So police arrested four adult
offenders following this situation in Nightcliff on Saturday morning. I
think it unfolded about eight twenty five.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yes, that's correct, Coatie. So at about eight twenty five
received report security guards being assaulted by four offenders at
the supermarket at dick Ward Drive. Male security guard attempted
to move on a group from the area. It's alleged
to the female allegedly tempted to punch him before one

(02:45):
for one of the males and a fifty six year
old male produced large sticks and back and assaulted and
sold them with it. These persons have subsequently been arrested.
We sit there before the courts. Again, it's the same
issue as you said before. The use of weapons in
assaulting people who are actually doing their job is just
not on obviously, as I said, it's before the courts. Yeah,

(03:07):
that's the allegation.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Yeah and yeah, I mean, like I just can't understand
what goes through someone's brain. I know, again alleged, but
what goes through your brain where you think someone's asked
you to move on and you go, I'm going to
pick up something and try to assault the person that's
asked me to move on.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
It's just unbelievable and exactly, and it probably goes back
to the point to what security and police fundamentally doing
is keeping the place safe and trying to look after
the public, and then for that they get assaulted.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Yeah. Hey, on Thursday night last week, there was this
situation that unfolded along the Esplanade just before nine pm.
Police receiving reports that a twenty six year old female
was assaulted by three female youths along the esplanade. Now
it's alleged to this group, we're attempting to steal the
victim's bag. However, they would disturb by a taxi driver

(03:54):
who stopped his vehicle where that assault was taking place. Now,
those offenders in fled the scene and boarded a metro
bus from Darwin CBD. And that's what I understand. All
the police working with the CCTV operators were able to
locate them on that bus exactly.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
So first thing is that there's some great work done
by the CCTV operators to identify them quickly in a
great response by police. So during the arrest of these
three years the offendage allegedly sold the two police officers.
One of the offenders spat on an officer and then
assided the second officer by scratching their arms and kicking
them to the chest. These three offenders have subsequently been

(04:35):
arrested in charge of defenses. I don't have the offenses
in front of me, but it'd be something along the
lines i'd imagine of assaults and the like as well.
Again goes back to the point, you know, it's the
same theme through this at the moment. There's some great
work done by the police. There's some great work done
by even the taxi drier identifying these people as well.
So because I saying I'm putting new into this command,

(05:00):
but I will tell you now, I'm not going to
be standing for coppers getting assaulted. Whatever we can do
to investigate it, I'll certainly be pushing it hard. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Well, it's the last thing anybody wants to see. I mean,
very often the police, even those security guards, so they're
trying to, you know, to give everybody else a bit
of a hand when people are doing the wrong thing,
and you know, for the police going and you're attempting
to arrest these three female youths who've prayed upon and
I'm going to call it that prayed upon this twenty

(05:29):
six year old woman while she's out walking. I don't
know what she's doing, that's her business at eight fifty five.
And to then have to worry about something like that happening,
you'd be bloody terrified, look, and she would be.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
There's no doubt about that. And we can't escape from that.
So but I can't say there's a good part to it.
But I suppose the good part is that we've got
the offenders in custody as well, and you know, for
those offenses. And then you know, again police doing their
jobs and execution of their duty looking after the public
get us sold.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
Just not on. It's not on. Hey, Sean, tell me
in terms of the OC spray roll out, how things going.
Have we've got any up to date numbers, you know,
with the number of people that have purchased it and
that kind of thing.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Absolutely, I'll give you some of the key figures. So
the number of individual buyers or purchases is fifteen hundred
and ninety seven. The number of canisters purchased as two
thy six hundred and sixty three during that there's during
the process, as you know, there's some pretty strict guidelines

(06:33):
about who's purchasing so done, there's been a lot of
back of house investigations and making sure the appropriate.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
People are going out, which we.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Want to make sure. So twenty six prehimited buyers have
been identified, twenty six did just seventy six and we've
seized thirty five canisters as a result of that. Essentially,
it's not, as we're quite clear on this when we started,
only certain people can get it and it's not open
for everybody, and you have to fit the fit into

(07:03):
the demographics or the process and saying the good thing
is we're identifying people who shouldn't have it and it's
been taken off them.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
So twenty six people, so is that sort of after
they purchased them, purchase their canisters and the police go
through do that check. After all the info is provided
by the retailers, and that's where you then go, what
do you do, Like you go knock on their door
and go, hey, you guys aren't meant to have.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
This in the simplest forms, Yes, so we look at
the forms. Obviously there's a lot of back of house investigation.
You can fill out the forum and we will check
on these people to make sure the appropriate ones to
have it. As again it goes back. It's the intent
of this is to keep people safe and it's not
intended for people who don't deserve to have it.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
Yeah, when you go, I mean, I don't know whether
you can give us much detail, but when you do
go and knock on their door and say, hey, you're
actually not meant to have this, are people generally pretty
compliant or do they try and you know, go, I
can so have a bit of an argument with you
about it.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Look, I haven't done any myself, so to be hard
to comment. But the fact of the matter is we're going
to take them back anyway, So.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
Yeah, regardless. And do they then get like what's the go?
Do they get charged or anything? Or you just get
it taken off you? And is there any further process
from that point?

Speaker 2 (08:13):
Look, I'm not sure the process after that. Look, I
can find out about it, but the most important thing
is the people identify and the most important thing is
that people don't have it, Yeah, in their possession. I'd
imagine there'd be some sort of follow up, but I'd
be loath to comment specifically.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
That's right. We can follow you up on that anyway.
I'm sure well good to catch up with you this morning.
Acting Commander of the Darwin Region, Sean Gil really appreciate
your time. Thanks so much for joining us. Thank you,
thank you.
