Speaker 1 (00:00):
We saw in the paper a little earlier this week
vision and a photograph of this terrible situation where a
young crocodile had cable ties around its snout. Now staff
from the Spectacular Jumping croc Cruisers they spotted this croc
I believe it's known as jim Andy struggling against the

(00:20):
restraints which would have caused him to starve to death
if not removed. Now joining us on the line is Alex,
known as Wookie from the Spectacular Jumping croc Cruisers. Get
a Wookie.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
How are you doing, Katie? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Really well, thank you so much for taking the time
to have a chat to me this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Mate.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
What happened with this small crocodile with the restraints and
the cable tie around its snout? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Unfortunately, while we were out on a tour on Monday afternoon,
we saw young Jiminy trying to hunt at the river's
edge at low tide, trying to catch small fish and
prime ones. But yeah, cable ties around his mouth, which
not only would have eventually caused Jiminy to staff, but

(01:10):
also makes it really easy for other crocodiles to harass
and attack him, you know, with his mouth cable tide shut.
It's really hard to try and fight back and defend
yourself as a little crocodile. So we immediately let parks
and Wildlife know, which is what everyone should do if
they see a crocodile while they're outfishing that is in

(01:34):
some kind of distress, whether it's a similar instance, you know,
a crocodile with some kind of restraint on it, or
maybe one that looks like it's received a propeller strike injury.
Always let parks and Wildlife know first there Interfering with
our wildlife is illegal for a reason. It's about safety

(01:56):
for people, it's about safety for the animals, and you
know they know best how to deal with these situations.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
What did you think to yourself when you saw Jimmy
with his snout cable tied up. I mean I was
pretty mortified when I saw the photo, and I think,
why would someone do that?

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Yeah, Look, I was incredibly angry when I first saw it,
and not just because it's a crocodile who we work
with and who we have this relationship with. It's it's
just it's an evil thing to do. Like Jimminy is
a size that there's absolutely no way that he could

(02:40):
have accidentally ended up in someone's boat. You know, a
little thirty forty centimeter crocodile, it's feasible that it accidentally
grabbed onto someone's line and you know, small and light
enough for them to you know, get it into the boat.
But and then and you know, be able to do

(03:01):
something like that, but Jimmy is not small. You know,
it's impossible to have There is no part of it
that was an accident. It's everything screams malicious at intent,
and it's just really really upsetting to see that. Luckily, though,

(03:21):
Parks and Wildlife were happy with our plan to safely
remove those cable ties and we were able to do that.
It was quite quite an exhausting thing for both us
and for Jimmy, and really stressful too.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Yeah, mate, what did you like? How did you have
to do it? I mean, I would imagine for you guys,
your safety is your number one priority, the safety of
the crocodile as well as the number one priority. So
I'm assuming it would have been quite an arduous sort
of task.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Yeah. Absolutely. And the thing is you're not just thinking
about the crocodile you're looking at. There's lots of crocodiles
out in our rivers, and when they're very curious animals too,
they notice when something strange is happening, when it's something
new and interesting, and they are likely to come and investigate. So,
you know, you're not just looking at that croc in

(04:14):
front of you, You're watching for any others approaching. And
when Jimmy was so stressed about this as well, having
those cable ties around this snout, it was difficult to
convince them to get close. I can't really go into
too many specifics about how we were able to get

(04:36):
those cable ties off. You know, we don't want to
encourage any kind of copycat behavior. We do have lots
of training and lots of safety systems in place that
we were following to make sure that we kept ourselves,
ourselves and Jimmy safe in the process of getting those
ties off.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Me mate, what is your message this morning for whoever
thinks that it's appropriate to do something like that to
a crocodile.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
Yeah, it's it doesn't make any sense to me, Katie like,
and we have such a strong bond with our environment
and the animals that live in it here in the
Northern territory. It's it's it's almost unbelievable that people could
have that level of disrespect. And you know, we are

(05:28):
urging anyone who might have any information, if you've seen anything,
or you know anything, please do contact Parks and Wildlife
because we know we want to we want to try
and get justice for Jiminy. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
Look, I agree. If you've got any info that could help,
make sure you're get in contact with Parks and Wildlife. Willkie,
how are the spectacular jumping croc cruises going today? Made
of the crocodiles hungry? Are they? Are they active and
jumping around?

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Yeah? Absolutely? Twos. This morning been going really well. Obviously
we're in the school holidays right now, so plenty of
families coming out. It's a good way to help keep
the kids entertained and keep their brains engaged too. You know,
we're not just looking at crocodiles, we're learning about them.
We're learning about the environment and promoting healthy relationships with

(06:21):
the environments and our.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Wildlife here, which is a great thing to do. Well, Walokie,
I really appreciate your time this morning, mate, and good
job by you. And was there a few of you
guys that ended up helping helping Wookie. I mean, I'd
like to give him all the shout out because I
just think you've saved him and hopefully he's going to
be okay.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
Yeah, absolutely, Yeah, myself, Shane and Henry, we're we're the
ones on the boat getting Jiminy released. So thank you
to both of them. You know, it's a big team effort.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Yeah, all good stuff. Good on you guys, and I'm
glad that you were able to, you know, to get
to get him free and hopefully he's gonna be all right. Mate,
have a lovely day out on the water. Thank you
so much for stepping aside from one of the tours
to have a quick chat to me today.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
Cheer Katie, You too, mate,
