Speaker 1 (00:00):
We know that that Amber and which provides local families
support after the loss of a child, they're ramping up
fundraising efforts with a raft of events happening over the
coming weeks. When our last caught up with the not
for profit group, they were calling for urgent support from
the community to help stay afloat. Now joining us on
(00:21):
the line is Taylor Peters, who is indeed the Amber
and chair. Good morning, Taylor, let me try that again.
Hopefully I've got our good morning again Taylor.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Hi, Katie, how are you going?
Speaker 1 (00:36):
You're really good. Thank you so much for your time
this morning. Now, firstly, Taylor, tell us how many referrals
has Amber and te received four support so far this year.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Yeah, we've received a huge amount of referrals. I think
we worked out that since January this year, we've had
thirty four new referrals, which is almost two referrals a
week in the last few months. And of that that
equals about forty five different individuals from families that are
requiring support after the loss of a child.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Well, I mean they are large numbers and it just
goes to show you how important the work is that
Amberente does to anybody out there listening that hasn't needed
the support of Amberente talk us through how it works.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Yeah, So it's a free service for anybody in the
Northern Territory, so that can be across Darwin, Catherine, Alice
Springs or any of the communities that have been impacted
by the loss of a child. So we support parents, sibling,
family members, as well as professional services that might have
also been impacted by the loss of a child and
(01:49):
they can receive individual grief and bereavement support. We also
have a lot of reflection events that we hold as
a way for the community to come together and remember
their loved ones, and we also do regular coffee and
chats and things like that. So it's really about providing
support in as many ways as possible when someone is
(02:09):
going through such a difficult time.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Now, when you talked about the referrals that you've received
so far this year, how does that compare to previous years.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
We've seen a really steady increase in the last few years.
So we were looking at in twenty twenty one around
forty seven referrals for the entire year, and last year
we counted one hundred and seventy one referrals. Coming through.
So those numbers are doubly over the last years, and
we can see that just this year alone, with the
(02:41):
thirty four new referrals already, that's putting us on track
to have another really massive year of support.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Now, remind us the types of support that are available
to local families.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Yeah, so that support looks like lots of different things.
We have a wonderful team of social workers, both with
lived experience and professional experience, where they can have a
text message support if that suits them the most. We
can visit people up at the hospital when they're going
(03:16):
through you know that post lost journey. We also have
an amazing amber antique car that we are able to
go out and visit the homes and communities where we
can and where we have capacity, because you know, during
the loss of a child and those few months following,
it's really hard to even leave the home sometimes, so
(03:37):
we want to make sure that we can offer all
types of support no matter what someone's going through.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Now, last time you and I spoke, the group was
under immense financial pressure. Where are things at at the moment.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Yeah, thank you so much for having us on last time, Katie.
It was really helpful and I know that the Department
of Shells brought forward our small grant funding allow us
to keep our doors open. Unfortunately, there was no extension
to meet the increasing demands and we did our end
of year appeal last year and I can appreciate that
(04:11):
everyone's doing it tough. So we are still in the
same situation, which is why we've ramped up our end
of financial year funding appeal that started at the beginning
of May. And we're also introducing a lot of new
fundraising events that really are about raising awareness Grand Barrantee,
but giving people the opportunity to provide that support in
(04:32):
different ways on top of donating and sponsorships and things
like that as well.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
So tell us a little bit about some of the
fundraising that's going to get underway to you know, to
make sure that you're able to keep things sticking along.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Yeah, I'm so excited. Our next big one is the
Memorial Car Drive, which is happening on Sunday this week
and we will meet at the Palmerston Golf and Country
Club and it is really about in couraging all people
to bring their cars, bikes, anything that they can to
do a memorial drive out to the Berry Springs Tavern.
(05:09):
So we'll leave it about nine o'clock on Sunday from
Palmerston Golf and Country Club and we'll drive through Palmerston
along the highway out to the Berry Springs Tavern. And
once we get out to the Berry Springs Tavern, we'll
have some raffles and some time to connect, and the
lovely people at the tavern there will have food and
drinks as well to really make a day for it.
(05:29):
And I also thought that they've got some live good
chipping events in the afternoon out there too, So that's
our next big one which I'm super excited, and we've
got some great interest there with people wanting to enter
some business cars as well. That's another thing. We're really
encouraging businesses and organizations if they've got any vehicle that
they would like to enter. It's only thirty dollars for
(05:51):
a car or twenty dollars for a motorbike with all
the proceeds coming to Antife that we continue to provide
the support.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
And SdiA have any idea at this point in time
how many people are set to take part in the
memorial car Drive.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Not really, We're really just encouraging people to turn up
on the day. I know that if you visit our
amber and Facebook page there is an dedicated event for
that and we've got quite a lot of people interested.
But yeah, hoping to get a really good turnout because
like I said, it's about honoring our precious ones that
(06:26):
aren't here anymore, but also about helping us with fundraising
so that we can make sure no territory in faces
this loss alone. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Absolutely. Now, in terms of first off, the memorial car drive,
if people want a bit further in forward, they're listening
this morning and they're thinking I'd really like to get
involved in that is the best way to sort of
do a bit of a search on Facebook or where
should they go?
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Absolutely, so, if you visit amber NT on Facebook, we
have an event page that is a link to the
memorial car drive. We're also sharing it to lot of
the community pages so people might be able to see it. Otherwise,
they can give Amberante a call if Facebook's not really
an option and we can talk them through it. But
(07:10):
the details are just that it starts for people to
be ready by nine o'clock at the Palmston Golf Club
on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
Now I know it's not the only fundraiser that you've
got planned. You guys sound like you're determined to be
able to continue to operate and make sure that you
can continue delivering the wonderful service that you provide. What
else have you got planned for the coming months and
how can the community really get behind Amberrente.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah, So our next big one after the memorial car
drive is the deck Chess and I'm a fundraiser. So
on Sunday, the sixth of July, we are sponsored to
watch How to Train Your Dragon, which is really exciting,
and that will be food by Yoji's Way, Desserts, Ruffles
and Community Connection again, so that one's on the sixth
(08:01):
of July and again on our facetic page, and we're
just really encouraging people. I know it's such a tough
time with donations at the moment, but we're really open
to having conversations with different businesses, so sponsorship anyone in
the organization that might be looking at partnering with us
and also putting us in the right direction for funding.
(08:22):
So we're really pushing all different avenues to stay open.
And it's something that our team is so passionate about
because it's such a vital service well.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Taylor Peters, the chair of amber nt I always appreciate
your time. Please keep in contact with us, let us
know how things are tracking. And just a reminder to
anybody listening this morning, if they're after any further detail,
get in contact with you. If they're thinking that they'd
like to support in some way, certainly encourage them to
(08:51):
do so.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Absolutely, and we look forward to anyone that comes down
to the memorial car drive on Sunday. Thanks so much,
Katie
Speaker 1 (08:59):
No worries at all, Thank you, thanks for your time
this morning,
