Speaker 1 (00:00):
A little while back, we caught up with a couple
whose dog died after being mauled at an unregulated pet sitter.
Anitra and Dean Jackson thought that their Cocker Spaniel Evy
would be safe at the pet sitter and Darwin's rural area,
but they still don't have answers about what exactly happened
to their beloved dog.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Now.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
At the time, Anitra had spoken to us about changes
which she thought needed to happen in an effort to
regulate the industry, as well as concerns around well a
lack of oversight of the industry. Yesterday, though, the government
introduced the strongest animal protection reforms in the Northern Territory's history,
(00:41):
introducing new laws in Parliament to strengthen animal welfare and
also impose the toughest penalties for animal cruelty. Now joining
us on the line is Aneitra Jackson. Good morning, Anetra.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Hi, Katie, high listeners, how are you?
Speaker 1 (00:58):
You're really good? Lovely to have you on the show
show now, Anitro, you were in Parliament yesterday? Is that
legislation were introduced? Was introduced? What was your reaction?
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Oh, look, we were in Parliament on Tuesday night for
the debate over our petition that we created over Aby's Bark,
And yeah, it was amazing. It was very emotional and yeah,
very surreal moment to have these changes that we would
have been pushing forward introduced.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
So obviously, so obviously the petition was tabled, a debate
happened as a result of that petition, and now we've
got this legislation that's been introduced.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Yes, so one of the one of the legislations that
we were calling upon was a code of Practice for
boarding facilities and pet sitters, and and that has actually
been introduced within the legislation. So the whole Pet Industry
Association standards and go sidelines for best practice boarding facilities
(02:02):
and doggie day cares. It's such a huge name has
been implemented in with the legislation. It's actually a fifty
seven page document. When when we had a meeting with
mister Meilee and we put our submission in back in September,
we actually gave them a copy of this you know,
(02:24):
code of Practice and said how awesome it was because
it just covers not only dogs and cats, but it
also covers all animals right down to reptiles and amphibians,
so that are in pet sitters now.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
In terms of you know, what the draft proposal is
going to see, you know, talk talk our listeners through
your understanding of what these changes are going to mean
when it comes to pet sitters to boarding kennels.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Yeah, so they're going to have to buy by a
set of standards, the standards of the you know, the
day to day operations of record keeping policies that they're cleaning,
transporting of animals, their security, even emergency protocols which obviously
happened with EBE, the animal management standards, you know, with
(03:16):
the housing enclosures, dog exercise areas, enrichment activities when doggies
are in you know, in care so they're not always
locked up, and you know, and also to the whole
law changes that have been introduced not only just covers that,
but it's just like harsher penalty, security and neglect, you know,
(03:39):
failure to provide minimum care, you know, food, water.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
And I'll take our listeners through some of those other
changes as well. There's quite like there's quite a bit
in there.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Huge, it's a huge and I'm not an expert on everything,
but I can I can let you you know what,
because we have We had a big me with Derek
Melian and the animal boarding and so so with you know,
harsher penalties for cruelty and neglect. So with that awful
(04:09):
Adam Britton probific cases. So the criminal code has gone
from seven years to ten years and which is good
and you know, like clearer rules for you know, transporting
dogs in a car and possessions you know, use of
the dog prongs, collars and electrical There's been some huge
(04:34):
animal cruelty cases with that, and most importantly, which we
are so happy about, is that Animal Welfare have expanded
powers to investigate an conduct inspection.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Yeah, which I think is excellent. I think it's really
important that they're able to do that. And you know,
I know you said then that you're not an expert,
but you know what, I love nature that and everyday territory.
It's been able to we act some change and I
think that's really important.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah, thank you. Yeah, it's been it's been sixteen months
since our gorgeous ev died and since ten months since
we launched Evie's Bark. So we have been working behind
the scenes and so many people have been you know, inputing,
helping us, promoting us. There's so too many to thank,
but we still have will not stop. So we've ticked
(05:25):
off Code of Practice. That's definitely what we want. So
our next course of action will be to change the
Local Government Act and enforcing licensing in cancel by laws
for animal boarding and pet sitters. So that will take
a lot longer than obviously what we've done with the
Code of Practice, but we are determined to make change.
(05:48):
And as you know, as normal pet guardians have to
have a license for their pets more than two animals.
It just doesn't seem fair about these commercial businesses and
pet sitters are not license. Yes, that's regulated.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
I think it's a really fair point. Well, Anitra Jackson,
it is really good to speak to you this morning,
and no doubt we'll probably talk again once that legislation passes.
But you know, it's like I said, it is a
it's an example, and I know it's you and I
know there's definitely other animal welfare groups as well that
have been speaking to the government about the changes that
they'd like to see. But I think it's really important
(06:25):
that you know when everyday Territorian's voices are heard and
you're able to enact that change.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah. The current government, like with Andrew McKay, he was
just wonderful. He did the most compassionate and emotional speech
on Tuesday night which border sort it tis and you
know everyone in the Parliament totally agreed that there needs
to be changed, which was just wonderful. Yeah it is.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Yeah, that's exactly.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Well lovely, Yes, and we want to make them safe.
You know, we don't know. At the end of the day.
They are a family and they are companion, so their
safety is just paramounts. Yes, and that's what Ebie's mission
has been about.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
Sport On well anitra lovely to speak to you again
this morning. Thank you so much for your time. Thank
you
