Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now joining me live in the studio is Acting Assistant
Commissioner of the Northern Territory Police Peter Maley. Good morning to.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
You, Good morning Katie.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
Good to have you in the studio. Now I want
to ask you. First off, we know that a man
died after a horrific incident in Rosebery on Friday. Investigators
from the Joint Anti Child Abuse Task Force attended that
home to execute a search warrant. Now, during the warrant,
we know a sixty two year old man grabbed a
knife and stabbed himself in the chest multiple times, at
(00:30):
no point threatened the Northern Territory or AFP officers, as
I understand it. What's the latest on this situation?
Speaker 2 (00:38):
So, yeah, you're right, we went there. The warrant was
about gathering evidence in relation to offenses. So yep, he
grabbed a knife, self harmed with that right, no threats,
took police or anything like that, stabbed himself multiple times
in the chest. Unfortunately, he died at the scene and
(01:01):
that triggers a death in custody investigation, which major Crime
will be conducting right now with the overside of the
Professional Standards Command.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
Peter, are you able to tell us I know at
the press conference after that incident, police weren't able to
say what the search warrant was in relation to. Are
you able to provide any further info than.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
That just said it was to gather evidence in relation
to offenses.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Katie, Okay. In terms of who was there, my understanding
is that the man's wife was at home at the
time of that incident. Was she the only other person there?
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Correct? She was the only other person present.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Coady, How are the first responders going because this does
sound like an absolutely horrific incident.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Yeah, for sure, it's a traumatic event. You know, the
police detectives tried to stop the man from harming himself.
One of the officers suffered a cut to his thumb
from that. But yeah, you're right, So it'll take them
a little while to you know, basically deal with that.
But we have well being services and psychologists that we
(02:03):
work with closely, and so those members affected by that
traumatic event will go and speak with them and hopefully
they're okay going forward.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
But just with I mean, like just reading into this,
like the fact that the investigators from the Joint Anti
Child Abused Task Force were there. Obviously we know that
this man has now taken his own life, and we
know that major crime are investigating and death in custody.
But what happens with you know, was there another investigation
(02:32):
also underway or is there still further sort of investigating
in terms of whatever. The investigators from the Joint Anti
Child Abuse Task Force were at.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
The house for yeah, so I imagine having done them
before once if this person was a suspect or the offender.
Once he's now deceased, that investigation might run its course
in relation to some other things. But as far as
putting him before the courts, obviously that is ended.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
All right, let's move along. There is certainly a lot
happening around the place now in terms of a stolen vehicle.
So six adult males and two mail youths were arrested
following a stolen motor vehicle and pursued in the Greater
Darwin area on Saturday night. Now, Strike Force Triedent members
were notified that this car was reported stolen on the
fifteenth of August. It was then observed at East Arm
(03:22):
parked at the East Arm Boat ramp.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
What happened, Yeah, so once police went towards the vehicle,
so we had Strike Force tried down the day and
traffic operations working together on it that trigger to purshoot.
We were able to spike the ties of that vehicle.
It went on a little bit further after that, quite slowly,
went into a shopping seat at car park. We were
able to block all entrances and that vehicle collided with
(03:49):
a couple of police vehicles at a very play speed
and we arrested the seventeen year old driver at the scene.
Some of the others they ran away, but we ended
up arresting, Like I said, the sevene year old driver
at the scene, a nineteen year old, a sixteene year old,
eight only twenty five and two thirty three year old.
So the adults not setting good example for the kids.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
No, no, not at all. Do you know if they
were local, like from Darwin or were they here from
somewhere else?
Speaker 2 (04:15):
No, I don't have any of that.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Hey, I'm also an aggravated assault then in Darwin as well.
On Sunday, Northern Territory police arresting a thirty year old
man in relation to an incident that had occurred at
Tamaris Court Well one male stabbing allegedly stabbing another male
known to him yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
That's roight, Cody. So on Saturday night we arrested the
thirty year old, and you're right, he was known acquaintance
to the person. He was arrested and charged with recklessly
endangering life and lawfully causing serious harm, aggravated assault, and
being in possession of a controlled weapon, so very serious offenses.
He attended court on Monday morning and was remanded into custody,
(04:57):
so he's still inside at the.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
Moment, Peter, Before I let you go, I understand there
was also an incident to overnight tenant Creek.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
I believe, correct, Cody. We locked up an ad and
year old male for assaulting his partner and another lady
that attempted to wintervene. So we locked him up at
the scene and he's currently before the courts.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Are those two ladies?
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Okay, yes, it's not serious injuries.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Well that is good to hear, but still appalling. You know,
when you think to yourself like this, you know the
level of domestic violence, But also how old did you
say he was? He's aden eighteen, so like a young
you know, a young person engaging in domestic violence. And
I mean it really points to me that we've got
a really big issue which I think we're all pretty
aware of here in the Northern Territory.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Absolutely, Cadie. And you can imagine, and I don't know
this person, but you can imagine that he's been exposed
to domestic violence from a very young age and then
he's become a perpetrator of domestic violence on females.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Well, which shows you, you know, we've got to get
in there early and try and stop this kind of thing.
Peter Marley, Acting Assistant Commissioner of the Northern Territory Police,
good to speak with you this morning. Thank you as
always for your time.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Thanks for having me Katie.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Thank you.
