Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now six Northern Territory teams are gearing up to take
part in the Australian Muscle Car Run this year, which
is going to be held in Tasmania. In total, they
have so far raised one hundred and forty thousand dollars
for Variety. It is, as we know, a charity that
supports kids and families through sickness, disadvantaged and or with
(00:22):
a disability. Now joining us on the line is one
of the competitors from the Northern Territory, Brian Breed. Good morning, Brian,
good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
How are you?
Speaker 1 (00:32):
Yeah? Really good now? Brian, you and I spoke a
while back, mate, tell me about this muscle car run
for anyone who's not familiar with the events.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Okay, so it's cars that originally ran in bath Earth
up until nineteen eighty four, so sort of crime bumper cars. Yeah, yeah,
we sort of meet up and go on a rally
over seven days this year is in Tasmania, which travel
around Tazzy up and down and ran around. But essentially, yeah,
(01:03):
we just put our cars out there, ourselves out there
to raise as much money as we possibly can for
kids in need and not necessarily just disadvantage kids even
kids that you may need a football scholarship or something
like that. They can also assist there. Yeah, it's it's
it's run by South Australia, but they tip money into
the Northern Territory wherever it's needed. You know, you can
(01:25):
apply for grants and whatever you want.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Wrong, and why is it something that you're keen to
get involved with? Each year?
Speaker 2 (01:33):
I had a couple of friends right in me into it.
And I've got my daughter's got seven kids between her
and a partner. And yeah, you know I've got a
son with on the on the autism spectrum. He doesn't
need anything. He's actually quite intelligent. Blah blah blah. But yeah,
just me and my wife got involved in it a
couple of years ago and it's it is an amazing event.
It's probably the best run thing I've ever been on it.
(01:55):
It is so professionally run. It's just crazy, amazing job.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
What's it like when you know, when you see all
these bustle cars lined up and everybody's there.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, look it's good. You know you drive through all
these little towns and we go to schools and you
know they make donations to the schools or you know,
like last year they made a donation to a surf club,
but they gave them some special chairs that wheeled people
down the sand and out onto the beach and into
the water. You know, people you know at a wheelchairs
or whatever. And yeah, it is unreal like and you
(02:30):
know when you driving through all these little towns and
that everyone's standing out on the streets and then clapping
and cheering and what have you. And you know, just
see the look on the kids' faces, you know when
you go to the schools and you know and they
do a donation. It's quite heart round you.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
I was going to say, to be pretty special, and
you know it's such an incredible thing to be part of. Brian,
how much money have you raised so far?
Speaker 2 (02:53):
I'm at thirty one eight hundred dollars and climbing it
sort of goes had in the last week, which it
has done this time as well. Out of the top
say ten, you know, people are raising money. We're in
the five, US are in the top six, if you
know what I mean, Like I'm in a tacond place
(03:15):
at the moment. Then you know you've got Tim Gordon
Rick and Team Stalker, you know, So yeah, and that's amazing.
We're actually a one hundred and forty eight thousand dollars.
There were raised eight thousand dollars overnight, more or less,
which is just you know, in such a small community,
it's just amazing. And for the people to get behind
(03:35):
us here, it's just, Yeah, people want to be proud
of themselves in the territory. They really are, and they're
so generous. It's not funny.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
They're so generous. But also we've got so many bloody
great people in the Northern Territory. Hey, people like yourself,
and I know you're not you know, you're certainly not
coming on the show to sort of blow your own trumpet,
but people like yourself, the others involved that are raising
this money, it's a wonderful thing to see. Like, it's
really wonderful to see territorians doing that out of the
goodness of your heart.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
It is. And you know, the other day, and as
you're aware, we had a sort of a think you're
getting together down a hidden valley racetrack to thank our
sponsors and invited our sponsors and a few friends down there,
and you know, we didn't realize that big it was
going to be. Ill walked out in the back of
the pit by and seeing the car park went holy
and hell, what are we going to do with here?
(04:24):
Like we're in trouble, you know. Then Tee police came down.
We had some fake fins done up to hand out
to people as they were going around the track for
speeding or doing whatever. You know, we had a speed
them at eighty ks now because nothing silly happened, but
you know, they did an amazing of the police had
really got involved with it and that they were so
funny Eric, and they enjoyed themselves, probably more than us.
(04:47):
Had four cars down there. The pull was all over
and give fines and arresting people and whatever. It's the
credit for them and names that run it.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
Yeah, and you know what, how nice as well, Like
I think it's so important, you know, like it's so
wonderful to have the police part of a community event
like that as well. How many people did you get
there at that event the other.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Day, I don't know. I'm going to say they could
have been two undred and fifty people. I seriously walked
out at the back and seen the cars and man,
what have we done? So we weren't expecting this. It
was lucky that names that run the motorsports race circuit
thing down there. It's lucky they offered to run the
day for If they didn't do that, we would have
(05:30):
been in trouble though. There was just too many people
in too many cars. There's no way we could have
controlled it. They did an amazing job.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Mate, tell me about some of these muscle cars. What
kind of cars are we talking about, because I know
there's a lot of redheads probably listening this morning that
want some details, they want some specs.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Right, So I got a nineteen seventy four Capri with
a little quite an angry little Stroker motor in it.
Tim Bryan's got an XW Falcon with quite an angry
three to ninety three Stroker, you know. Gordon Jabow's got
a nineteen seventy three. I think it is x C Coop.
The Stalker family got a really nice little l J
(06:08):
Trana which is an immaculate little car. Rick Jones has
got an x CEA going in it, which is a
really really nice car. The cars are so well presented.
Every one of those out the cars from the territory
is mint. Michael Dickinson and Shandel They've got a really
nice nineteen sixty nine Mustang and that that car is immaculate.
It's just beautiful. And when you see the cards you
(06:30):
think you're not taking that light strake. You're just crazy.
You know, it's so well presented. And you know the
time that's gone into every one of these cars. You know,
You've got no idea what I've done. I've worked for
ten months, nearly every day, every weekend I my car
to get it ready. You know, it's just been a
massive job to get that out there, and that everyone's
done the same thing, you know, like a lot a
(06:52):
lot of work.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Oh mate, tell me when do you leave for Tazzy
and how long do you expect that it's going to
sort of take to get there.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Okay, we're driving out tomorrow morning. We've got to drive
to Ballarat, which we'll get into Ballarat early next week.
We're staying there for a couple of days and we've
got a couple of days up our sleeve just in
case something should happen along the way. And then we'll
drive from Ballarat to Tazzy or to Geelong to get
on the boat with the ferry to Tazzy next Thursday,
and we do that overnight in the would you call
(07:21):
it on would you call it in tazzy? Oh yeah,
Davenport right, yeah, we should have start heading off from there.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
How good? Now, So tell me how much money are
you hoping to raise?
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Well, look, I never thought i'd get the thirty grand.
I'm just gobsmacked, I really am, and I was. Last
year we got it, you know, we did I think
twenty seven six hundred last year. Tim and Alan are
at twenty nine and forty four. Want to get to thirty.
If there's anyone out there with some spare coin, you know,
jump on the muscle car site and we'll try and
(07:56):
get them to thirty grand today or tomorrow. Yeah, if
we can get to one hundred and sixty grand, or
even one hundred and fifty grand, don't you know we
nearly had one hundred and fifty now. But you know,
that's a lot of money to come out of a
little community, you know, and I amount a lot of money.
It's just yeah, when we sit around and talk about it,
and you talk about the generosity to some of the people.
(08:19):
Can I just tell you a quick story about one boy,
one of more sponsors. So this guy, his son had
had a bad injuries. His name's Nick Scott. I don't
care if I dob him in anyway. And he's got
a son that got burned a couple of years ago.
And so listen, vriety to do this year they help
the families out blah blah blah. You know, I'd like
to put your name for it, and YadA, YadA YadA.
You know you might be going through some tough time,
(08:42):
you know, and he's just a down to earth and
you know this is heart wrenching. He's such a damn
earth guy. Goes O. Listen, you know we're getting along
the right. Most families with something like this happened. You know,
they separate, We haven't. We've bonded together better. Blah blah
blah blah blah. Thanks so much for thinking of me,
Rah rah rah. Anyway, and now later he went and
(09:02):
donated a thousand dollars.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
To my cause.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
That's just darn people for you. You know, like he's
not in town of them, and he's way on holiday
with his kid. I think his kid's got to go
away and have operations because he's only a young kid.
When when it happened, and he's he's going to have
all these operations for his burns. You know, that's just
a typical Territorian, you know, Like it.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
Is, right, Brian, Like I'm I always think I'm so
lucky because I get to hear stories like this all
the time. I get to speak to people like you.
I get to you know, to speak to others who
are doing incredible things. But it never ceases to sort
of surprise me how generous and how humble and how
wonderful Territorians are.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
It just blew me away when he did it. You know,
I eaning him up and I didn't have a guardian,
but I told him he was a muppet, you know
what I mean, Like he just that's just darn people.
You know, I was just shocked when he did what
he did. You know, how nice?
Speaker 1 (10:02):
How nice? Brian remind us of that website if anyone's
listening this morning, that you know that wants to donate,
that wants to be involved.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Okay, so you can just go to Variety and look
up the Aussie Muscle Car Run, or if you just
google Aussie Muscle Car Run twenty twenty five, you'll find
it and then you just scroll down to the car
you like and at the moment you are like car
nine's super erasing and down. He needs about eight hundred
bucks to get him over the line where he wants
to get to. And Tim and Lana, I'm not being funny.
(10:33):
They they do the hardest work out of all of us.
It's a twelve months thing for those guys, and Tim
and both of him and Alana get around and they
take the car everywhere and they do so much for
so many people. They're just the most beautiful couple you'll
ever meet in your life. And it'd be good to
see them get to thirty grand.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
It's sure would well. Brian, it's lovely to speak to
you this morning. Can you let us know how it
all goes and how much money you will end up
up raising?
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Yeah, we'll do.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Yeah, lovely to talk to you this morning. Have the
best time.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Thank you quick shouting out to Joe Herge and Brian
A Heller and or what are you from? The two
politicians come here the other day. That was really good
for them to take the time out and get down
there and all good stuff.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Brian O Gallagher and Joe good honor. That's good, Oh
wonderful hey, lovely to catch up with you. This morning,
this morning, Brian, have the best time mate. We'll talk
to you soon. Thank you, thank you.
