Speaker 1 (00:00):
Look a real change of pace right now though, because
we know that well, our territorian is walking two hundred
kilometers and it is all to raise money for mental
health and suicide prevention to honor her brother who took
his own life. Now, Brie Matthews has put a little
fun twist on her challenge. She's turned it into a
(00:23):
bit of a pub crawl and she joins me on
the show. Good morning to you, Bree. Hopefully I've got her.
Good morning to your Brie. We'll just try that again.
We're just having a bit of an issue with that
phone line, and if you just be with me a moment,
we'll see if we can get her back on the line.
Hopefully I'm able to now, Good morning to your Brie.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Good morning, how are you?
Speaker 1 (00:46):
You're really good, lovely to talk to you this morning. Now, Brie,
are you currently walking or what's the situation?
Speaker 2 (00:53):
We have hit the footpaths this morning and we are
just about to come on to the Stuart Highway.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Good stuff, So walking from the cave to to Berry Springs,
is that right?
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (01:08):
And so you're just about to hit the Stewart Highway.
How many of you are there?
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Bray four walkers and my son.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Oh how old your son?
Speaker 2 (01:21):
He's ten horn?
Speaker 1 (01:23):
So is he going to walk the whole way with you?
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Well, he's determined. I think he's as determined as where
I am. So let's see how he goes.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Aubrey. That's beautiful. And it is to honor your brother,
isn't it?
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Yes? It is, yeah, who we lost last April to suicide.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
So talk me through this challenge, this journey that you're on.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
So I am on my journey raising money for are
you okay? Team? Doing it for Heat. It started last
year just me and my family, and I didn't think
that this is where I'd be this year. And I've
decided that I will challenge myself to walk two hundred
kilometers for the month of July.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
And why not throw a little bit more of a
challenge within a challenge and walk sixty seven k's over
three days from Darwin City to Very Springs with some
pretty amazing pit stops along the way, and hopefully we
can spark some conversations and get people talking around mental health.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
Oh what a wonderful thing to do, Bree. Tell us
where the pit stops are and can people come along?
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Oh? Absolutely, we are. So we're walking to the Midway
currently now, so we'll be there for lunch around one
one thirty today and then on to Flint for musical
Wingo Tomorrow. We'll be walking from Palmerston out of the
Howard Springs Tavern where we'll finish up at Humpy Do
tomorrow night, and then from Humpy Do out to noonmar
(02:59):
on Saturday lunch and we have a big finale out
at Barry Springs Heaven on Saturday night.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Oh this is incredible, Brie. And you are doing this
all in honor of your brother. Can you tell me
what your brother was like? Oh?
Speaker 2 (03:15):
He was just there's no other words to sum him
up than other than he was just a loud o,
the Larry Ken. I thought he was one of the
strongest people I know. But people really do struggle silently.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Oh, Brie, I think it's beautiful what you're doing. I've
got two older brothers myself, and you know they mean
the world to me. So I have no doubt that
your brother did to you and and you know going
on this journey for him is a beautiful thing to do.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
How much does it mean to you having a little
boy there with you as well.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Ah, here's my rock. I don't think i'd be where
I am without him over the last twelve months. He
means more to me than what you'll ever know. No,
it's pretty special, and I guess I've got to remember
that it was his uncle.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Yeah, he is grieving in a different way, so he's
got he's got a different determination for me.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Oh, how nice. What a great thing to do, and
how lovely that your little fella's doing that. It makes
me feel quite emotional brief thinking about you both doing Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah it is. It's pretty special.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
And thinking about him doing that, you know, and just
being by your side. What a great thing to do.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Yeah, it's from something that's started off so small, Like
I can't I can't thank the community that it's really
given me hope that no one is actually ever alone.
I'm just someone so small and to get to wear
I am and have the full support of our community
(05:02):
behind me. I was expecting to fall on my face
and this has just succeeded all expectations that I ever had.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Oh Brea, the Northern Territory would never let you fall
on your face when you're doing something so wonderful. I
don't think.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
It's Yeah, just it's kept my spirits high. And yeah,
my friends have been incredible, like they've they've carried me
in to have them here walking with me. Yeah, it's amazing.
And Bre, what is emotional?
Speaker 1 (05:35):
It would be? I'm crying listening to you. Bre. How
do you think your brother would feel about your stopping
at all the pubs deeer reckon, he'd like.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
That he did enjoy a drink and he's got the
best seats at the pub at the moment because my
posters are up on the bar, so I know he
will be at every pit stop. He's cheering me on
and he's telling me never give up.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
All beautiful Bree. How much money are you hoping to raise?
And what are you at so far?
Speaker 2 (06:09):
I'm hoping to reach the ten thousand dollar mark. Six
weeks ago when I had this idea, I was aiming
for foreign I've suppressed that. I think about four and
a half thousand for doing it for heat soly halfway.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Oh fantastic stuff. Now where can people go if they
want to donate? If they're listening this morning and they're like,
I want to support this girl.

stopping at, so the Cavna, the Midway, Slims, Farmersten, Howard Springs,
Cavern coumty Do, Nunama and Berry Springs. If you see
us along the highway, you're more than welcome to stop.
