Speaker 1 (00:00):
Many of you will be familiar with Camp Quality, as
our station does indeed host an auction each year to
raise funds for kids with cancer. Well, the Northern Territory
Government House they've hosted a kid's Camp Quality twenty five
years ago. So they hosted these twenty five years ago,
during which the children buried a time capsule filled with
(00:21):
memories and treasures, and this evening it's going to be retrieved.
Now joining me on the line to tell us more
is Camp Quality's chief commercial officer, Sandy Hall.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Good morning, Sandy, good morning, so happy to be here.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Yeah, lovely to have you on the show. Sandy. Twenty
five years ago the kids buried the capsule. Can you
shed any light on why they buried it? And you
know what the plan was.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Look, our camps and fundies are magical, wondrous things and
thanks to the amazing volunteers who pulled them together, there's
all sorts of wonderful things that can happen on camp.
So I'm absolutely sure this would have been an idea
of one of our volleys to you know, to mark
a moment and they would have had the well, they
did have the fool support of Government House and the
team there to put together something quite magical. I mean it,
(01:11):
it's got me wondering how many more of these are
out and across Australia. But no, very very excited to
on earth some memories today and really celebrate some incredible
families and impact.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
And so whereabouts was it buried?
Speaker 2 (01:23):
It was on the grounds Now I haven't been there,
so I just know it's somewhere on the grounds.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Of Government House, of Government Government House.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Yes, yeah, so I believe the kids are actually hosted
in Government House. That's where they stayed on the camp.
So what an experience for families and kids. What a memory.
And yes, we got to reach out a few months ago.
You know, here's a picture of the plaque and as
an organization, I have to say we you know, we
didn't have a record of it. So, you know, incredibly
(01:51):
exciting for us and a great opportunity to celebrate everything
we do.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
How exciting. So tell me what's planned for the unearthing
this evening and what are you expecting you might find
in this time capsule?
Speaker 2 (02:04):
That's a million dollar question. Well, look, we are incredibly
lucky to be We're going to be welcomed to Government
House by the administrator and his partner, or for his
honor and his partner, and we will have some families
joining us, and some volunteers and our incredible ambassador Jared
would Get and his partner. I think they're going to
put on a reception for us. They're going to make
(02:26):
us all feel very special. And then we will go
down and I think I might be doing the unearthing myself,
and then we will pass, you know, pass the parcel
to the administrator and we'll start unpacking it, seeing what's
in there. And look, I have no idea. I'm expecting
some photographs, maybe some notes. Goodness, it was before smartphones,
(02:46):
maybe a CD ROM AVCR. No, I've got no idea,
but yeah, you know, you guys will be the first
people we tell.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Do you think it could be a bit of an
emotional time as well? I mean when you look at
what camp quality does and you know what those kids
may have actually put in there, could it be a
bit emotional?
Speaker 2 (03:05):
I think so. I think so. And the journey, you know,
childhood cancer twenty five years ago, Australia has made such
tremendous strides in survival rates. Now most kids will come
through it, and that wasn't true, you know, twenty five
thirty years ago. So absolutely, I think when we start
to understand who was at the camp, what they were
(03:26):
going through, maybe where they are today, Yes, there will
be some maybe bettersweet memories in there, but I think,
you know, we're all about fun and positivity and coming
together in really dark times, and I think it will
celebrate that too.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Now in terms of who, like you said, there are
some of the people that are going along, is anybody
going along that might have been there when that capsule
was buried or that might have had some kind of
part of the capsule being buried.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Yeah, I think one of our volunteers does. So I
haven't met there. We've got five of our amazing volunteers
coming along, and I've been told that one of them
was there for the for the burials. So look forward
to meeting that person, hearing the stories. And we actually
did find some photographs from the original camp and they
are fabulous in an of themselves, So we look forward
to posting them and sharing the moment for sure.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Oh how good, how good of government House to have
the kids say for a camp, you might have to
try and do that again. Hit them up for another
camps Andy, I.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Would love that. I'm not sure they'd like us pitching
pents in the lawn, but we'll see. I know, I'll
asked the question.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Yeah, oh, look, you guys do such a fantastic job.
Tell me, you know, for anyone who's not familiar with
Camp Quality, remind our listeners what the organization does.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Look, I have to say from the get goro your listeners.
You know, your station incredible supporters of what we do
and have been for so so long. But look, Camp
Qualities existed for forty years to bring positivity and laughter
into the lives of kids facing cancer and their families.
We do that a whole number of ways. The heart
and soul of what we do are our camps, our fundays,
(05:05):
and family experiences getaways. But now you know that childhood
cancer journey is different. So we have hospital, we have
services in hospital, in school to prevent bullying online and
all sorts of things. But fundamentally we are there on
that journey to give the moments of light and laughter,
and we couldn't do it without our incredible volleys. We've
got seven hundred across the story, and you know the
(05:28):
amazing funds raised from you know, your view of your listeners.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
Yeah, listen, yep, No, Well you know what, our listeners
love getting involved in our camp quality writing auction day.
It's always so much fun. There's no doubt about that,
Sandy Ilocket, because it's sort of I just get to
have a fun day. It just you know, I talk
about the good stuff.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
Well, I was manning the phones last year and I
have to say it was it was full on, lots
of bids coming in. So no, it's deven. Oh gosh,
it's an amazing event. And you know we couldn't do
it but you already this year we've had a family camp,
We've had a funday, a family experience. We've got another
few fundays coming up, you know. So the funds raised
(06:08):
are very much going to the local kids and families
that we support, which is what it's all about.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
Wonderful, wonderful stuff. Well, Sandy, do keep in touch. Let
us know what you find in that capsule.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
We will very excited.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
He's going to be exciting. Lovely to catch up with
you this morning, Sandy Hall, thank you so much for
your time.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Great, thank you, thank you you, thanks so much
