Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, as I mentioned a moment ago, the Kid's Cancer Project,
Australia's largest independent funder of childhood cancer research, is in
Darwin tomorrow and they are going to be with one
of the biggest fundraisers arriving later this week, well actually
tomorrow as I understand it, as part of his walk
around Australia. So Captain Australia, also known as Simon Harvey,

(00:25):
he's going to be arriving in Darwen as part of
his Lap of Australia, walking over fifteen thousand kilometers across
two years to help to raise money for childhood cancer
research through the Kid's Cancer Project. Now he is a
cancer survivor himself, and he joins me on the line

(00:45):
right now. Good morning to you, Captain Australia.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Good a, good a, my friend. How are you doing
on the show.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
It is lovely to have you on the show. Now,
I understand right now you are near the turn off
to Humpty Dewey. Is that right? Yes?

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Mate. So I've been following the Stuart Highway for I
know almost a week now, just up from Catherine and
Well on the way to Diet Darwin, which for me
is a major milestone. It's sort of the beginning of
the final bit of the lap to get home to Brizzy.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
Oh, how long have you been walking for?

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Well, it's a little bit complicated, but the long story,
the long and short of it, is three hundred and
seventy six days boots on the ground?

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Wow, mate, how are the thief? How are the toenails?
How are the legs?

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Mate? The toenails, don't ask because it's a bit growth.
I've probably lost about ten of them on the road.
They just they just tend to peel off after a
certain amount of juice. Nasty mate, But yeah, honestly, Okay,
So I'm an old man. I'm a cancer survivor, like
a stage four head and net cancer. I was given
six months to live. I've got a bunch of problems
subsequent to that, and I shouldn't be able to do

(01:54):
any of it. But it's righteous. I'm trying to earn
my survival. I'm trying to do something good with the
extra time that I been given. And because it's a
good thing, I'm able to transcend all of that physical stuff.
The boots don't matter, my feet don't matter, the pain,
the suffering doesn't matter because it's a privilege to be
a service to such a wonderful charity. Mate.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Oh, you've got your why, that is for sure. You
know why you're doing it, and you've got a big
reason why you're doing it's mate, that is so admirable.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Yeah, I thank you. Yeah. I think if we all
just turned our mind towards doing some sort of concrete
good in the world, everything starts to get better. It
just has this ripple effect, mate, and I think in
these wobbly times it's more crucial than ever.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
You know, what do you think about when you have
some of those challenging moments when you are sort of
traveling along and you're on those massive stretches of road,
It like it'd be tough going.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Mate, Honestly, no, never there's whatever happens, whether it's a
wheel that bloody snaps or any problem that comes in
front of me, it's just pivot, adapt, move forward. And
it's through that mentality that I've been able to get
past all of my problems because I started just in
urgent need at healing. I was broken after my fight

(03:08):
with cancer, stage four six months to live, so coming
back from that isn't easy. And I think that through
tackling the adversity, through surrender and just knowing that you're
going to do the best with the tools that you have. Suddenly,
any obstacle it's something that toughens you. It's something that
betters you and makes you stronger. So whether it's the

(03:29):
big old steep old hill and I'm huffing and puffing
my way up or some other problem, I just push forward,
and that pushing forward makes me stronger.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Captain, what kind of supplies have you got with you? Like,
you know, what are you traveling with?

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Yeah, so I've got this trolley down the East coast.
It was just a backpack because I could get water
every few days, so I just had to load up
and carry it on my back. But since Adelaide, I've
got this big old trolley. So I look like the
world's oldest, weirdest timeless toddler, really dressed as a superhero.
So it's green, gold and grubby. Mate. When before they
put me through, they they've made a mistake and said

(04:05):
I'm Captain underpants. I look a bit like him too.
But the trolley, oh, it's got so that it's got
starlingk attached to it. It's got a battery, soul of
power coming in on the world's first high tech hobo.
But it's also got like a bloody swag strapped on
there on the dag with the bag and the swag
and the flag, there's a big charity slag. I look,

(04:27):
I must like people driving down the highway. They just stare.
You know, those clowns at the side show hourly that
he just turns with the mouth wide open. I've seen
that look so many bloody times.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
You've got it. You're gonna have to send us.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
We're gonna need to I will, Yeah, no worries.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
I'm glad you're not doing it in your underpants.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Oh mate. Sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the wee
hours of the morning, and I have to do a
little bit of a toilet, a truckle will go past
with his lights blaring, and he must think he saw
a yow in Captain the Cants or some sort of
weird natural bush you know. But yeah, if you wanted
to have a picture of it, we go up on Facebook.

(05:10):
We were always video uploading.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
Oh, we'll make sure we do. Now tell me, Captain.
In terms of raising money for the Kids Cancer Project,
why did you decide that that was who you wanted
to raise money for.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Well. So back in COVID Time, I was broken after
my fight with cancer. I couldn't come back. I was
just slipping away. I was like a ghost in my
own life and I needed to repeat a walk I
took as a child to heal. It was just an
inspiration that came to me, so that the helping of
the charity was just an ad on. I figured, if
I'm going to walk from Brisbane to Melbourne, I might
as well as tell the charity. So I researched because

(05:47):
I couldn't abide seeing kids wait for the same treatments
that I had gone through. Yeah, and I thought, Kids
Cancer Project, what a wonderful charity. I looked at the numbers,
the efficiency score, everything beautiful charity. But it was just
a bolt on. I was for healing, and very soon
it flipped mate. I learned how integral and important being
of service was. So that's surrendered to a greater cause

(06:10):
is what gave me the healing that I needed to achieve.
So when I got to Melbourne after that first COVID
Time walk, I realized I needed to do more. So
that's when I set out on the big laps. So
I've walked from Brisbane and Melbourne twice, as bonkers as
that sounds, but this time I kept going. I've crossed
the continent, I've crossed a nuther board. I've got to person,
I've walked up the West coast forty five degree days
into port Headlands and here we are going up into

(06:32):
Darwin and it's just the Kids Cancer Project. It's such
a beautiful charity. I've gone through it. I know how
much devastation it can inflict on a human life, and
not just your life, for people who love you exactly,
the three families, three families every single day that here
your child has cancer and the weight of that, you know.

(06:53):
So if I can do something righteous to help, bloody
hell I wanted, I'll ultimate the rest of my life,
you know. And so yeah, it's a wonderful cause and
that's the way of it. And anybody who wants to
look at it, dub dub dub dot taps big lap
dot au. It's tax time, tax deductive. We'll get in there,
chucks of money in there, get amongst.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
It, Get amongst it. Mate, how much money have you
raised so far? And what are you hoping to get
to well.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
The first Big Walk was one hundred and sixty five
thousand dollars. The Big Lamp so far has raised like
one hundred and eight or one hundred and nine thousand.
First Big Walk was only eighty four days and the
Big Lap so far is over a year. So I
really we're not doing so great with the money side
of things. So if Darwin could rally up and tuck
a few bucks on their bloody wonderful stuff because the

(07:38):
goal is to raise a million dollars pick out to
cancer it.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Oh, good on you well, Captain Australia, Simon Harvey. It
is so good to speak to you this morning. Mate,
what an inspiration. Good on you and good on you
that you're doing this. I just think it's phenomenal.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Thank you. It's been such a pleasure and I'm glad
you got a good giggle out of it. Much I did.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
And one of my friends has just sent me a
couple of photos of you so that I so that
I could see how you're looking, and you look like
you're having a great time. As tough as it is,
you look like you're having a good time.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
I've found joy in my life after I thought I
was completely broken by sorrow and the final lesson of
it all is that's available to all of us. Mate, YEA,
be strong, stand tall, and you can you can live again.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
You know how. Good Good on you. Thank you so
much for talking to us this morning, and all the
best with the rest of your journey.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
So grateful, Thanks a lot, Thank you.
