Speaker 1 (00:00):
In very much breaking news, the Chief Minister Leofanocchiaio has
confirmed that the process is underway to appoint Martin Dole
APM as the fifteenth Commissioner of the Northern Territory Police Force.
Now Cabinet has endorsed the appointment of mister Doll on
a four year term. Is my understanding with the recommendation

(00:21):
now proceeding to the Northern Territory Administrator Hugh Hegey for
his honor's formal approval. Now joining me live on the
line for a very quick interview is the Chief Minister
of the Northern Territory, Leofanocchiiro. Good morning to you.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Good morning Katie, and good morning to your listeners.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Now, Chief Minister, why was the decision made to appoint
the acting Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole to the
role formerly?

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Well, Chenie, this is really about appointing someone who is
the right person to lead community safety and our men
and women in blue into the future. And so in
Martin Dole, we have a born and bread roturium, born
here in Alice Springs where I am today, grew up
in Uen Demoux. He has served as a distinguished police
officer in our Northern Territory Police Force for twenty nine years, Katie.

(01:11):
And in the last seven months he has stepped up.
He has been undertaking that role of acting Commissioner and
in that time he has developed and delivered the OC
Spraytrial rollerut. He has developed and is delivering the Police
Public Safety Officer transformational work we're doing within the structure
of policing. And he delivered and secured the biggest, best

(01:34):
paid deal for Northern Territory Police in twenty years, making
them the highest paid police in the country. And so
what I see in Commissioner Dole is someone who has
the territory at heart, the rank and file, the frontline
at heart, and shares that vision for a safer territory
for everyone. And so there is not a better person
in this country to be the fifteenth police Commissioner. And

(01:56):
I'm very proud of the announcement today.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
I mean, did you go through all recruitment process here though,
or is this sort of a job for the boys
kind of scenario.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Now, this is an appointment which is entirely part of
the process. I've appointed mister Doele based on merit for
both the rank and the position. And of course this
is something we see right around the country. I mean,
the Prime Minister is just a direct appointed the AFP Commissioner,
so it is very normal. But what we need is
certainty for our fourth, certainty for our community and Martin

(02:29):
can deliver on that. And it's a very important time
to be drawing a line in the sand and just
squarely focusing on the job we have to do. And
I'm down here today, Katie to talk about our readiness
for summer. But Martin Dole APM is a distinguished career
serving territories. This has got full approval and endorsement of

(02:51):
the Cabinet. I spoke with the Administrator yesterday who also
endorses the appointment, and so on the thirty first of October,
we're really looking forward to celebrating that swearing in ceremony
at Government House with Commissioner Do and his family to
really usher in this new era of police.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
All righty, the thirty first of October. Now, I mean,
do you feel that the blow review has cleared him
and you know, cleared some of those senior recruitments that
are in place so that he's able to take the
reins despite well criticism from the Northern Territory Police Association
that it didn't go far enough.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Yeah, this is a line in the sand. We receive
the report, we delivered it to the community as straight
away as we promised we would. We've accepted all six
of the recommendations and work is already underway and I
will have more to say about that next week, Katie.
But we are urgently moving to deliver on all six
of those recommendations, and is a line in the sand.
We need to be able to move forward where there

(03:51):
are clear areas of improvement to be made, and we
are absolutely moving through those right now. And this is
about delivering the legislation, the backing that our police need,
the support, the pay, and it's about focusing on community
safety as a government to be that number one priority,
and that's what we'll continue to deliver on cheapness.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Are you confident that he can lead the force in
the direction that members want? I mean, especially given some
of the criticism from the Police Association yesterday, but that
he can lead the force in the direction that members
want and that the community expects.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Absolutely, he has the entire government, the entire cabinet's undivided support,
we know that Martin Dole is the best person in
the country to do this job, Katie. And he has
the territory at heart. He has the troops, the force
and the community squarely at front of mind. And so
this is a really exciting turning point. It gives stability

(04:49):
and security. And I can say, Katie, you know we've
just finished the press conference and gone down. We're also
literally right now, Minister Burgoyne is announcing the opening of
the Triple zero Center down here, which is our delivery
of an election commitment, and the men and women in
Blue just pouring out of their offices and must rooms
or congratulate the new commissioner. It's well received and we've

(05:11):
got a big job to do and we're getting on
with it.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
I know you've got to go, but very quickly, what
do you say to anyone that says that he brings bagach.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Well, we're drawing a line in the sand. I think
when you spend twenty nine years delivering and serving the community,
there will always be people who have their views and
commentators will commentate, Katie. My job is to lead. I've
picked Martin do APM to be the fifty police Commissioner
the very first Alice Springs born and bred and where
the Commissioner lives in Alice Springs. It sends a very

(05:41):
clear message to this community and territories that we are
backing in territories to deliver for our people now and
into the future. And I'm excited to continue to wait.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
So, commission so is he going to stay based in
Alice Springs?

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Correct?

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Yeah, right, that does sound like it's the first.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
It is a first. It's sent Hassick born and bred here,
rains a new end and move based down here in
his former role as deputy and he will stay here
as the police Commissioner. And I think that sends a
very clear message about what our government's confidence is in
Territoris to lead and to lead for all territories.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
All right, Chief Finest, I know you're getting the wrap
up from your side, so am I thank you very
much for the quick chat this morning.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Take care everyone.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Thank you,
