Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, last week, if you're listening to the show, I
spoke to the member for Blaine, Matt Curl, after he
went to visit seventy one year old Trevor Miller in hospital,
who was seriously injured in a violent home invasion. Two
boys aged thirteen and fourteen allegedly broke into Trevor's woodrof home.
They attacked him with a machete and then stole his car.
Last Wednesday, Matt Curl said that Trevor had sustained multiple
(00:23):
cuts to his arms and legs, some down to the bone,
and didn't shake his hand upon leaving because he wasn't
sure if he still had hands. That is what Trevor
had said to Matt Now. He also told us that
Trevor thought that his life was over until a neighbor
came to his rescue. We know that Trevor is a
(00:44):
massive part of the local community. He's also involved in
local Seniors. The group out there and joining me on
the line is one of his friends. City of Palmerston
Counselor Dannielle Everly, Good morning, Danny.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Good morning Katie.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Danny. You went to see Trevor yesterday. How's he going Katie.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
I didn't end up actually going to see him. The
reason that I didn't is because he'd still been in
the intensive care area and he's got a number of
people that are a lot closer than I am that
are going up every day, and so I'm in daily
contact with them to check in on him, And obviously
I don't want to overcrowd his room or be a
(01:26):
little bit overwhelming when he is heavily sedated and the like.
So he knows we're he knows we're all caring about him.
This morning, I've spoken to two people again and he
is he's feeling a lot better this morning he was
talking to them, and we're very hopeful that it won't
be long before he's moved to a ward.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
Danny, I understand on top of those serious cuts that
he's also got a number of broken bones and is
being kept sedated to help his body recover. Is that
the case, Well.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
It's an interesting because he's got so with the cuts
and how it's all been done. He's had to have
surgery to reattach so the muscles in his legs and
the like, So he is from a rehab perspective, he's
got a long road ahead of him. He will need
to learn how to walk again, he will need to
(02:19):
learn how to use his hands again. You know, this
is this is a significant mental exercise I think for
Trevor and something from a resilience perspective that none of
us really have to be faced with in our lives.
Because he's a very proud man. He's a still or
(02:40):
in the community's he's an activist gentleman. And you know,
being stuck in a in a bed and in a
room for such a long period of time, and you
know this, this rehab that he's got ahead of him,
is not going to be easy. As I said, learning
to walk again, learning to use his hands again.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
I'm struggling to even wrap my head around these injuries,
right like I'm struggling to wrap my head around a
home invasion turning into somebody having to learn to walk again.
Like it is unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Yeah, absolutely, Katie. And you know, from a me looking
at it, I go, this wasn't just a home invasion.
This is an attempted murder, you know. With what's occurred,
This is this is not this is not normal. We've
got We've got such a non normal situation occurring across
(03:37):
the territory and this is just the latest, well sorry,
the latest. There's obviously the tourists that we've just had
attacked in Alice as well. And I'm I'm really really
angry that with these situations, Katie was, it's turning into
a political football match. You know that we're just have
(04:00):
our both both major parties throwing each other under the bus,
and you know, the situation is not getting any better.
And really I'd love to see some bipartisan approach and
you know, let's put our big boy pants on everybody
at the table and go, okay, we actually need to
(04:23):
come together now. And you know this is this is
no longer about politics, and it shouldn't have been about
politics in the first place. We need to start protecting
territorians and yeah, and we've got to do it together.
This isn't this isn't a single minded approach. This isn't
a you know, one side does it better than the other.
This is everyone needs to get in there and agree
(04:45):
enough is enough and what are we going to do
about it.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Look something that the acting Chief Minister, Jared Mayley revealed
on the show just a little bit earlier this morning,
which again blows my mind. Is one of these alleged
offenders the you know, Corrections had actually opposed, so they
did not think that it was appropriate that that one
(05:09):
of these alleged defenders was bailed to go into a
supported accommodation facility. They'd oppose that, yet that person was
still bailed. Like I, you know, I can't quite wrap
my head around that, Danny, And I can't quite wrap
my head around the fact that, you know that if
you've got Corrections sort of going, well, hang on a sec,
(05:30):
this may not be the right move. Like what needs
to happen to stop a man like this from actually
being assaulted in the way that he has in a
life altering way.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Yeah, do you know what, Katie, I'd like to see
the judge that made that decision go in and did it, Trevor.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
Good call, good call, you know, Nannie.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
And actually see what this poor man is now left
with and what you know, the people around him. You know,
one of the other counselor's council Sarah Henderson and her
husband Jeff, they're very very close to Trevor. They've been
you know, really good friends with him so over twenty years.
(06:12):
So they're at the hospital every day, and you know this,
it takes it out of everybody. You know, it's not
just you know, the one person. And we've got a
community right behind him. I know that as well. And
you know, I'm very very thankful for everyone that's reaching
out to you know, to Mark from the Palmeston Litchfield
(06:32):
Seniors Association, because Marg's in there as well, she's visiting
every day. Maria is there as well. You know, there's,
like I said, there's that little group that you know,
are going up to the hospital constantly. And that's why,
like I do encourage you know that we leave it
to those closest to him, because also we don't want
(06:53):
to be taking anything into the hospital and into that
environment that potentially could you know, because he has had
pneumonia while he's been in there as well, so you know,
let's make sure that he's been given every possible chance
to get out of there as quickly as possible. And
that's well, and that's the thing too, you know, like
(07:15):
I said, he's a very proud man, Katie, and he
wants to be.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
Home, Danny. Look out. My heart goes out to him,
my love, my prayers go to him because I just
think it's appalling what's happened. And and Donny, before I
let you go, I am just running out of time.
But before I let you go, I understand that there's
been a working bee organized to support Trevor. What like,
(07:38):
what can people do to try and.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Help people, Katie, that's still being finalized. So yeah, and
just with yeah, and so once like, when there is
some information that we can share, I'll let you know,
because again I want to make sure that Trevor's because
now that he is he's you know, in good spirits
(08:02):
and speaking today, you know, those closest to him will
have a chat about what he's like done, you know,
so that we make sure that you know, no one
oversteps or anything like that, because we want to make
sure that it's for him and in his best interest.
So once I've got more information, I'm more than happy
to share that.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Yeah, well please do Danny Eavely Palmerston Counselor. Really really
appreciate your time this morning. Thank you so much for
having a chat with us.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Thanks, Katie, appreciate it
