Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now joining us on the line is Brian O'Gallagher, the
CLP candidate.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Good morning to you, Brian.

Speaker 3 (00:07):
Good morning Katie and your listeners, especially those residents living
in Crama, Malac and Mucky Live.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
Well, Brian, we have got seven minutes this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Are you ready to get started? I am all right,
let's do it. Brian. Why did you decide to put
your hand up to run?

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Look, Katie, I'm pretty conscious of time and I really
want to focus on the biggest issue for residents, which
is crime and anti social behavior. So in terms of
a little bit of background, suffice to say, I've got
extensive experience in the NTI government and I did senior
economic and business develpin roles. You'd be where I did
five years as Deputy CEO of the nt Chamber of Commerce,

(00:44):
and I was a champion for our small meetium businesses,
who I always described as the heart and soul of
our economy. Currently, I've done four years in the private
sector recruiting international students to come and study and work
in our hospitality sector. And of course, up until the
end of this month, City Councilor for Waters Boards serving
the residents of Karma Malac neighboring suburbs, and I guess

(01:06):
it's in that role I can talk a little bit
more as a councilor. You may recall I put forward
a four point plan two years ago to address crime
and anti social behavior in Karmamlake, which I think I
actually discussed on your show now. Key elements of that
plan included getting a response to the petition to the
NT Parliament that I organized for almost twelve hundred local residents.

(01:30):
I think it's eleven hundred and sixty eighthpek side, but
twelve hundred. And they were requesting a permanent police presence
at Karma shops. And even if we just start with
a six month trial with the mobile caravan two or
three police officers, the response from this disastrous deaf labor
government was they just totally ignored it. Cape Warden, the

(01:51):
then police minisot try to tell us that things were
getting better than Krama crime, wasn't that bad? What an
absolute joke. And the later this year I offered a
pot of nucleus. He just didn't respond at all. They
just don't want to know about it. Another element in
that was, and I've said before, I'm a very strong
support of public housing. But we do have to address

(02:14):
the public housing crisis that is happening in Crime and
Lake and elsewhere, and ensuring there are strong consequences for
those tenants that and I've said it before, use their
houses as drug houses and don't tell me it doesn't happen.
It does. They vanalyze their house and look, this isn't
we're and tear. I'm talking about fifty to six eighty
thousand dollars worth, and there's continually disturbing their neighborhood day

(02:39):
in day out. And I'm talking about residents who put
in twenty five complaints every month about the drunken behavior
and the disturbance. I also may say, as for the
introduction of boot camps, and I'm very pleased that the
CLP is part of their Crime and Youth Justice plans.

(03:01):
Have actually committed to establishing two boot camps straight away. Fantastic, fantastic, So.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Brian, I mean, based on your previous experience, why do
you think you're the best person for this role?

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Because I'm actually connected and engaged with residents. I actually
get out there and talk to them. I listened to them.
So let me give you a couple of real examples,
and these have only happened in the last couple of months.
About three weeks ago, and I'm part of the Selby team.
Jured Mayley who is deputy leader, and myself, well, he

(03:34):
went to a neighborhood meeting down in Delwood Crestit organized
by one of the neighbors. There were twenty residents there
and the meeting went for about an hour and a half.
Jared and myself only got to speak for last ten
minutes because they wanted to be heard. And for people
like Jim and Barbara, they know who they are. He's

(03:55):
an eighty three year old gentleman. He can't even go
fishing because he's so afraid for his wife. They can't
leave the unit because there's continual screaming and fighting in
the adjacent units. Esuppose they have two people, but no,
they have about twenty or thirty people there for Kir
and Tony up in Krama. They've had to invest about

(04:17):
thirty forty thousand dollars just to try and secure that
place from all the habit going on and the wonderful
More family who live up in Chambers prison. Mom and
Dad takes shifts three hour shifts to try and stay
awake and keep a protective eye over their house and
their family. This is absolutely shocking. And then I also

(04:39):
went out Katie with Lea. We went to see a
Greek family. They've had to basically fortify their whole Branda.
It's almost like they live in a prison just so
that theyn't get attacked. And they tell us about all
the violence and the screaming and including rapes going on outside.
That's just not acceptable. And then we had a really
shocked one. We met with a young family in carab

(05:02):
And presence the husband. I think it was a Sunday afternoon.
He was going up to get some dog food. As
he stepped out the gate, these young news came with knives,
put it to his throat, demanding money, right in front
of his lovely young wife and two toddlers. Now, I
actually went to see them two days ago to see

(05:24):
the Unfortunately the husband wasn't there, but here he's still
traumatized by him. But the young white said to me,
and she was pretty brave, but she said, by and
we're going to leave. We can't put up with this anymore.
We're fit up with it. And then yesterday we talk
about the Sedge Court one. Well, I actually went out
there and did a welfare check on the guy, and

(05:45):
there's no allegence in this. He's been bashed, he's got
a broken foot, he's got jaws also, he's got bruises
all over him. He was absolutely terrified he was going
to be killed. And that is really where he is
tried aumatized. He probably doesn't want to speak about because
he doesn't want to upset his ninety year old mother

(06:05):
and get her concerned. That's so he's caring for his
mother thinking about that, and it's really hard. And whilst
I was there, Katie, I have to say this. I
think one of the lead ring leaders of the attack
was calling from outside, calling saying we're going to murder you,
and some sort of perverse form of Larico justice, we're

(06:28):
going to kill you and let death threats to him.
And then she actually called me out because I obviously
had my car out there and Brian A. Gallagher, come out,
come out. I want to tell you outside of the story,
I said, I can't see if there's a different view here.
Yet she bloody ruined it, you know, she was did

(06:50):
the same deferats. So the key thing here is I've
got Residents have had enough of this bloody government. They
need someone who's listened and only to see your people
can do it. And the only way we can get
that is boat one COLP, vote one brian O Gallagher
sealp for Grama's probably the only way. We can't risk
getting another labor government.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
In bright ten seconds left, mate, can I ask you
very quickly? First off, do you live in the electors?

Speaker 3 (07:17):
I live about three hundred meters away.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Okay, preferences.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
Look, we can't risk another labor government and I don't
care which way people do the preferences for residents. If
you want to change this, the only way is to
vote one COLP across the board. We hear about right.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
We are out of time. Thank you so very much
for having a chat with us this morning.
