Speaker 1 (00:00):
We know that a man is set to face a
string of domestic violence charges after a coordinated arrest happened
him per RAP on Monday. Joining me in the studio
right now is Commander for the Northern Territory Police David Moore.
Good morning to.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
You, Good morning, Katie, and good morning to you listens.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Good to have you on the show. Now tell me
on Monday. I mean this coordinated arrest, it's certainly had
people talking. There was the TRG. Is it called the
bear Cat, the big vehicle.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
The Bearcat. Yes, that is a vehicle. That's news for
going into those side of situations.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
How was this He was obviously deemed high risk.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yeah, he was, Katie.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
And what I can say is that the Northern Territory
Police we have arrested a twenty nine year old male
following a coordinated arrest, an operation led by Strikeforce Tride
and a strike starting in Strikeforce Lyra YEP in PRORAP.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
This was on the sixteenth of June.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Strikeforce Lyra obviously are a dedicated officers that specialize in
domestic violence and resided as defending, so they were targeting
that obviously using specialist resources, including but not limited to
the Territory Response Group was the Police Negotiator was involved
as well, and obviously as highlighted members from Strikeforce LYRA.
(01:14):
The person was actually apprehended, taken into custody about three
point fifteen pm and taken to the watchofs. He has
been charged and i'll go into actually by but he
has been charged with two counts of breach of domestic
violence order, damage to property and breach of bail. Now,
the reason it was heavily coordinated, especially when we involved
our tactical groups such as TRG and EGGS, is because
(01:37):
they're higher risk.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
They're quite a high risk offender.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
This offender is known to police, the defenders known previously
to have weapons, so that's one of the reasons. And
the other reason obviously was that he was on bail.
And this is for obviously breaching for a domestic violence
order as well as attempt to divert the course of justice,
causing intimidation and making threats to kill within the court proceedings.
So he hased in court. I don't know what those
(02:01):
results are. Nevertheless, obviously, really great coordinated efforts, particularly when
we can apprehend someone will not disrupt the public too much.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Obviously a lot of people.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Saw what was going on, but nevertheless really well done.
What I will say is domestic violence orders are put
into place with conditions to protect the victims, and those
breaches will not be tolerated and police will continue to
obviously hold a finness to account regardless. But obviously if
you're experiencing difficulties due to domestic violence, there are support
services available, but not limited to too obviously eight one
(02:33):
hundred respect or Lifeline one three one one one four.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Well and by the sounds of rs you know, without
putting words in your mouth, sounds like in the well,
he's dangerous. He's a dangerous individual. And so that's why
you've got those resources there to make sure that everybody
within the community remains safe.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
Yeah, there are particular individuals, as have highlighted that where
we do a risk assessment on any type of apprehension,
and particularly if a person's known to be violent, carry offenses,
assault police likely to obviously not come peacefully, then obviously
something used to be considered higher level. And they are
the specialists. They are people coming in and we're apprehend
(03:10):
very quickly.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Yeah, fair enough, just on the indecent assaults now, We
spoke about this earlier in the week as well. But
on the we know that one of those offenders was
arrested in a per Rap incident. But then there was
another incident in Larache and now my understanding is that
that persons still at large.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yes, that's correct, Katie.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
So well, I can say and what we do now
is that we did attend a residence in Larach here
overnight following an indecent assault, and we obviously urged the
community to remain vigilant.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
So that was last week though, was correct?
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Yeah, So at about ten forty pm Wednesday, the Joint
Community Communications Center received a report of a marl intruder
at a unit complex where a female had allegedly indecently
assaulted whilst in her bed. Is alleged the victim woke
to a hand across her mouth before she pushed the
hand away and called for help. The defender obviously left
(04:02):
the scene. So pretty horrible offense really, Yeah. What I
can say is the victim has described the offender as
a neatly dressed all in black wearing a full faced
balaklava mask. He's approximate one hundred and ninety centimeters tall,
slim build with a tan skin and long eye lashes. Obviously,
place are heavily investigating this. It is very alarming to
the public. I know we just had an offender in
(04:25):
custody in relation to a previous assaults.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
They are not linked obviously.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Nevertheless, this type of offending is alarming to anybody, particularly
in their own safety of their own residents. So it's
a priority obviously for the Northern Tertiary Police.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
And I know when we spoke to the police on Monday,
they had also said that you know, initially that full
face balaklava, but it could even be a cap that
he was wearing as well. So given us a bit
of an update on that description, I mean, lock, is
there concern that he could go to somebody else's house
and do the same thing.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Obviously there is that element. We obviously don't have that
information at the moment. We're actively trying to seek this person.
There are inquiries that we're still following up. Will obviously
let the community know once obviously if we apprehend some
way or someone's helping police with their inquiries, just just
to take that alarming aspect away from the community.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Very horrible though.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Now I want to ask. Someone's just messaged through a
little bit earlier this morning and said, Katie, there's playing
clothed police officers at the woolworks in the CBD. Do
you know what's going on there?
Speaker 3 (05:30):
What I can say is, and only from a visual
I'm coming to actually do the interview with yourself this morning,
walking out of the NAB building, I did see police
officers there in playing clothes with and obviously searching a car.
I would be speculating, and again I'm speculating that it
may be searching for drugs or searching for particular property
(05:51):
within in a vehicle.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
But I don't know how any other details of that.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
Nevertheless, it certainly grabbed the attention of the public.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Yeah, well it always does, right, and people like to
see the out there doing those jobs, you know, whether
they're uniform, door plane clothes. So hopefully we'll get some
further detailer, I'm sure if there is an incident that's unfolded,
we'll get some further detail as the morning progresses. Now,
I do want to ask you as well, we had
a terrible weekend on our roads. When it comes to
(06:18):
deaths on our roads, we now that road toll stands
at nineteen after three people were killed in two separate
crashes on the weekend. Can you give us a bit
more detail about what Katie.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Obviously, you know we don't like to report this type
of stuff, but nevertheless it is there. So I can
talk about the fatal crash in Catherine initially as the
starting point. So we were investigating a fatal crash that
occurred in Catherine region on This is on Saturday afternoon,
so it's around three forty pm. We did receive a
report of a single vehicle collision on the Buntime Highway.
(06:53):
That's approximate forty five Columbus south of Victoria Highway intersection,
so it's quite remote. And rule the forty six year
old mail and that set who was the driver and
a soul and the sole occupant of that vehicle was
actually pronounced dead at the saying unfortunately.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
So obviously a report's been prepared for the coroner.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
And obviously if anyone has any information please contact one
three one.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Triple four.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
Stimulation to that we had the second one obviously, and
what I can say is that first one I just mentioned,
thirst of all.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
Is very heavily.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
You investigate around speeds. We do believe Speed is a major.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Factory in relation to that.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
So the second one we had was obviously in Beswick
and we are still investigating that fatal crash and that
again that occurred on Saturday mornings. So Saturday was a
very horrible day for obviously police in the community. At
seven thirty am that obviously the Police Communication Center received
a report of a single vehicle crash that occurred along
Central Arnhem Highway. There are actually four occupants in the
(07:50):
vehicle at the time of the collision. Marin Boy and
Beswick police members which is absolutely the remote community's closest
attended as well as the Barunga clinic staff to that scene.
What I can say is a forty seven year old
male who is believed to be the driver and a
fourteen year old female believe or not, were pronounced dead
at the scene and tragically with other two passengers actually
(08:12):
did survive and they had non threatening life non life
threatening injuries and they were conveyed to Catherine Hospital.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Major crass as that investigation.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Well, we're also about to head into the school holidays
next week and I know there's going to be plenty
of people driving around, plenty of people you know, going
out and about camping and that kind of thing. What
is the message for territories, you know, given the fact
that this road TOD just continues to go up, like
we are talking about it regularly, and obviously not just
lives lost on our roads, but also people seriously injured.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Yeah, thanks Katie.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
So you were quite correct when you said we've got
nineteen currently, which is always well too high. This time
last year we had twenty seven and obviously, as we know,
we had a record last year of sixty. So the
main message obviously is that particularly coming into school holidays,
people driving up and.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Down our highways.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
You do have the rule dar and showIn Darwin, you
have one in Catherine, you have one in our springs.
I can say that police we'll be running and targeting
a traffic campaign as well as an operation called Akaman.
That'll be a joint operation between all three different commands,
and that'll be really targeting obviously not only the event
and any social behavior and the public the public safety,
(09:23):
but it'll also be targeting traffic up and down the road.
So we'll have a contingent of traffic, a bit of
a traffic campaign. So I really want to highlight to
people if you're using the roads, please slow down. Speed
is a major factor, as it was in particularly the
Beswick one I just mentioned that.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Was seat belts. There were lack of seat belts being.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
That's another one of the fatal followers. So that factor
as well as obviously alcohol and drugs.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
Just don't drink with alcohol, just don't do it. Get
a sober driver.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
And the other one obviously just check your vehicle if
you haven't driven it for a while, you're going down
highways and aren't bitchmi sometimes, particularly if you're around the
Buntine area in that check your road worthy, check your tires,
help make sure you've got a seat, make sure everyone's
all fitted.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
So they have probably the big messages I can send.
We say this every year.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
I know it really comes down to the individual and
the driver to make the right choices.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Spot on. Hey what about with the supercars on on
the weekend. I mean, is there additional police heading out
that way as well to make sure that people aren't
taking Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Well we do cardia.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
In fact, it's a good message because I will be working,
particularly on Friday. I'll work that and I believe the
assist Commissioner Peter Malley will also be involved in that,
and we have a number.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Of staff so they'll additional.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
Obviously plenty of stuff in what we'd like to call
it inside the cage, which is inside the event. Yeah,
it'll also be obviously plenty of you'll see police and
obviously traffic particularly around outside and after hours back and
sure the public gets home.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
Yes, I guess the message is if you're planning on
going out to the supercars, having a few drinks while
you enjoy watching it, make sure that you've got a
sober bob or that you're catching the public bus home.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Thank you, Katie.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Yeah, great to catch up with you as always. Thank
you so much for your time this morning. Northern Territory
Police Commander David Lovely to speak with you.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Thank you, Thank you Katie,
