Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now joining me live in the studio to let us
know how things went overnight from a Northern Territory Police perspective.
Commander David Moore, good morning to.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
You, Good morning Katie, and to your listens.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Now, how did it go overnight for our Northern Territory Police?
Was it a busy one?

Speaker 3 (00:17):
I'm pretty pleased to say, yes, there were incidents where
it was busy, but I'm pretty pleased to say generally
overall it was really really well received. Public did really
really well with behavior's majority, and I must say compared
to other years, we've probably had a better night.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
So pretty pleased to hit the report on that.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
That is good to hear. There was like, while the
large majority do the right thing, there's always a few
that don't, and there's always a few incidents that you've
got to deal with. Can you talk us through some
of what you guys did have to deal with?

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Yees, certainly, Katie. So look some of the activities that
we had obviously had a large continuent of police out
doing most of the major events that were occurring in
relation to this. What I can say is that we
did have a number of ten leaves of liquor that
was actually tipped out for being an excess obviously alcohol.
We had did have three people that were taken into

(01:07):
protective custody for their behavior being obviously intoxicated.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
They were actually taken to sobering upshowder, so that was good.
We did have.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
One though, that had to end up in Palms to
watch house overnight, so we did have an extra one there.
I want to talk about the caution, and I know
you've ready met in with it with the gentleman. In
relation to the trolley and the lighter.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Yes, look very very foolish act.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
But nevertheless police were ibould obviously respond to that he
was given a caution because he actually hadn't committed in
an offense at that stage. However, I would hate to
think what may have occurred, so I'm glad that was
sort of put to better at the stage.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
So, from your understanding, had a trolley full of fireworks,
and from what the fieries had said to me earlier
this morning, had like a gas lighter or something and
was going to try and see whether he could light
them all up at once.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Yeah, and I don't have the actual circumstances, but what
I can say, and I think I gave some messaging
yesterday on radio myself around Territory Day and some of
the safety tips. One of the safety tips there was
in relation to obviously having a bucket with sand, having
individual firecrackers go off, not to light them in great bulks.
The danger with that is when they obviously explode or

(02:21):
they go into different directions. This is where we see
injuries and we see damaged property and safety of people.
So yeah, I'm glad that was sort of knted out
before we quick any further. So we did have two
other persons moved on. We did have actually have a
damage to a this is what police dealt with, obviously
to a smashed window of a vehicle obviously probably parked

(02:41):
it in that vicinity, verted off. And we obviously had
a stolen handbag which is on a seat bench, and
we had one small grass fines is what police were
dealing with infrastructure. Look, what I can say though, was
that we dealt with some larger incidents out in.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
The real property area.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
So we actually had three structure fires that we had
to deal with. And again I must say that the
fire departments obviously the investigators on this and they're still.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Determining whether fireworks were a cause.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
But what I can say is that on the twenty third,
sorry about half past eleven last night, Jess did receive
a call that a structure files at a property in Duract.
This was actually within the garage of the property itself, right,
there were no injuries. Another one occurred at actually it
was at almost help us two in the afternoon that
just received a call the houses on fire at a

(03:33):
property in hump to do. Again no injuries. And the
last one, obviously was at about three pm. A similar
one was a structure fire at a property in Erawonga.
And this is the house is actually completely engaged, sorry
in engulfed in flames, no injuries.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
But that's the most serious one.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
We're just wanting to see what the outcomes of those are.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
And the causes.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
And so was that the old zoo somebody had the
old zoo?

Speaker 3 (03:56):
Yeah, so whereabouts is that Octangler old zoo building? So
I don't actually have the actual address, but in Yarrawonga.
It's not something I was familiar with, but I do
recall it as.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
The old zoo that we have.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
But everybody was safe, yes, correct, Yeah, there's no injuries.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
To those, but nevertheless significant damage.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Well that is lucky by the sounds of it, and
as I understand, there will be a full investigation in
to determine what exactly went on there. I might move
on to be before we move on, would you say
that you know that it was a tick from the
Northern Territory Police. Did the large majority do the right
thing last night?

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Yes, I believe so, and that's the information I have,
and so really pleasing and thank you to the public
for their behavior generally overall.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Obviously you have already reported.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
On it from others other agencies and some of the
things they dealt with, we're going to get that, but nevertheless,
for a police perspective, really outstanding.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
So thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
That is good to hear. Now, I just want to
ask you about a few other incidents from the last
few days. There was one on James Circuit happened there.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, thanks Katie. So it was actually on Monday.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
It was at six o eight pm that the Joint
Emergency Services Communications Center we received a report of a
crash on James Circuit that was in Woodroff where it
was alledge that four occupants in the vehicle at the
time of the collision. Three were actually fleeing the scene,
and actually one of them was located by a member
of the public and I want to talk to that
just a little bit. In a second police attended and

(05:25):
the thirty six year old Marle was uninjured. He did
return to a positive roadside breath test was taken to
ardh for further bloods obviously giving his condition. Three of
the other occupants fled the scene and they're still remaining outstanding.
So the investigations ongoing, but a big sort of thank you.
Obviously there was a citizen's arrest. Yeah, it was a
citizens apprehension that obviously before the police got there, and

(05:46):
police were able to take that person into custody as
a result. And what I can say is that that
particular person was actually an employee of the Public Order
Response Unit, so he was off duty. Yeah, right, so
we classify that as a citizen's arrest. A really big
thank you and well done because obviously we may still
have been looking for that for that offender.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
And so like, is it believe that they'd stolen the car, no.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Relation to stolen car driven erratically dangerously? Yeah, And obviously
as a result it had an accident, yeah, which obviously,
thank goodness, no one else was hurt, or the driver
or the passengers.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
However, obviously it's as serious it could have been. So yeah,
we're very fortunate.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Well and well done that to that person on the
citizens arrest. I mean it's not something that that the
police sort of generally encouraged, but sometimes by you know,
it is a situation where if you if you're able
to stop something and it's happening in front of you,
it's it could be a good thing, so long as
you're not putting yourself in danger.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Yeah, and being part of that unit that had some
training and have the obviously the courage also to do that,
so we have well done.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Hey, I want to ask you about the situation that
happened in Leane. You're over the weekend, just after seven
o'clock on Friday night. It was the Northern Territory Police
will call out to a hit and run, so essentially
two people, a male and a female. We then learned
from Saint John that it was a father and his daughter,

(07:09):
as I understand it, putting groceries into or getting groceries
from their parked car were hit by a vehicle speeding past,
and that car and that offender have still not come forward.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
That's right, okay, and that's why I'd love to talk
about that a little bit this morning. It's still under investigation.
So the circumstances of the incident are that obviously police
were called to a hit and run in Lee Anya,
and I was on the twenty eighth, which was on Saturday,
and it was around seven five pm where obviously our
joint Communication services received a report of two people being

(07:43):
a male and female and you've highlighted that already being
struck by a passing vehicle on the annual drive so
LEDs the vehicle. The victims were removing groceries from their
parked vehicle on the side of the road before the
vehicle traveling at steed struck them and then fled the
scene immediately, which is really really disappointing and alarming. I
can say that the female suffered serious injuries and the

(08:05):
male suffered minor injuries, and Saint John's obviously called and
both went for a medical assessment at the h investigation
is still going. We believe the car we're looking for
as a White Yaris or Regrets hatchback with a missing
side maround was damaged at the scene of the collision,
So we're obviously encouraging Police Crime Command has that investigation. Particularly,

(08:25):
what I want to put out there that if we
have any information in relation to either dash cam footage
at the time of the incident, or anyone may think
that they may have seen that particular vehicle or a
vehicle of that similar description, please contact police on one
three to one triple four.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Obviously we're trying to get there.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
Must have seen something, correct, especially there only on your drive.
It's a fairly busy sort of area, isn't.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
It very very busy. I know it quite well.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
I live in the suburbs and take that route quite
often to the High Buscus shopping center, for example, and
to do my shopping. And it's yeah, it's really quite
a And thank goodness, we didn't have anyone a fatality
or anyone further seriously injured. Yes, they did suffer some injuries,
but could have been a lot worse.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
Well, and you would think that, I mean, and you
sort of touched on this, you would think that the
vehicle that hit those two people would have some damage
to it. Surely someone's sort of asking questions you know,
why is that vehicle damaged on the side mirror or
down the side of the car. If it was a
family member or a friend somebody, you know, you would

(09:29):
think that you'd start to ask those questions as to
why that car's.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
Damaged and just to just to highlight a gain. So
what we're looking for here is a white Yaris or
a Gretz Hatchback, so it's white and it would have
a side mirror missing and damage obviously to the side
of the car from the scene. So if there's anything
like that spot it, just please contact police and let
us know.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
We would like to follow up with some inquiries in
relation to it.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Well. And unfortunately we know that there was another fatality
as well on our roads. In recent days. We can
continued to see that road toll go up.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
Yeah, unfortunately, Katia, I don't like reporting on these, but
it is a part of our business at the moment.
So what the information I do have is that obviously
we're investigating a fatality crash that occurred a proxy five
kilomes east of Buller's, a bullet community.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
It was about eight.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
Thirty am on the twenty ninth of June, where I
gained our Police Emergency Services Center received a report of
a single vehicle roll over. It had two occupants in
the vehicle. It's on Victoria Highway. A thirty nine year
old female was allegedly thrown from the vehicle and a
nineteen year old female required astraction. So we had two
obviously females in the vehicle and off. Judy Nurse extu

(10:41):
year id oft the scene not long after the crash,
and the thirty nine year old female was.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
Obviously at that stage deceased.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
Emergency services crews from Police Foreign and timber Creek arrived
a short time lad they managed to extract the nineteen
year old female that was in the vehicle. She was
conveyed to Rule Dalheen Hospital by Careful in a critical condition.
Major Crash Unit has the investigation in relation to that.
The next akin has been notified of the deceased and
obviously we're pairing a report for the coroner. Again, I

(11:10):
ask anyone as information or dash cam footage of the
incident to contact one three one, triple four. Horrible horrible
incident our road told on NOUS. It's at twenty one. Yes,
it's down from last year, but any death, there's too many.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
For our for our time.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
That's exactly right, That is exactly right. You know, we
do not want to be in a situation where lives
are lost on our roads, so it is just another
reminder please slow down, follow the road rules, do the
right thing, keep an eye out for each other. Commander
David Moore, always good to catch up with you really
appreciate your time this morning.

Speaker 2 (11:41):
Thank you for your time. Kati appreciate Thank you.
