Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well one of the Northern Territory's most iconic family friendly
fishing events. It is also the longest running family fishing competition,
now in it's thirty sixth year. It's happening this weekend
and it brings together the community for a weekend of adventure,
camaraderie and competitive spirit. Now the Corrobbery Park Challenge is

(00:22):
hosted by the Palmeston Game Fishing Club. It takes place
in the stunning wetlands and billabonks of the Mary River
system and there is quite a few prizes up for
grabs as I understand it. Now joining me on the
line is the event coordinator, Emma Harvey. Good morning to you,
morning Katie.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
How's it going?

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Yeah, really good, lovely to have you on the show.
And Lema, I would imagine you are a busy lady
this week making sure everything's ready for the weekend.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Yes, absolutely spent a bit of time this morning packing
so we'll be hit in Corrobbrie Park Haven shortly ready
for setting up for the big weekend.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Oh good stuff. Now, tell me a little bit more
about this competition for those who've maybe never been part
of ash Well.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Look, it's centered around families essentially open to both club
and non club members. We've got one hundred and fifty
competitors this year and nearly sixty kids, which is absolutely massive,
So maybe pop can expect lots of activities over the weekend.

(01:35):
It'll be huge.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
How wonderful it is great, isn't it to see kids
getting out there on the water like they're doing something
that's really positive, taking part in this competition, but just
fishing more generally.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yes, absolutely, so we've got teams made up of a family,
three four kids with the activities over the weekend. We've
got scavenger hunts going on, and we've got bucket casting,
you know, all the fun stuff. You know, fishing is
the whole weekend. So people can choose to camp out

(02:10):
on the boat fish overnight or come back to the
tavern and you know, chill, chill back, have a meal together.
So that's happening.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Hey, tell me what are the different ages or the
different categories. I guess that people can take part in
the comp in Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
So look, we've got a number of amazing sponsors that
have come on board. You know, it wouldn't be a
top end event without redis so Readi's are getting behind
the biggest Barrel Munday, which is you know, fabulous, So
we'll see how that pans out over the weekend. We've
got some helly fish coming on board, so someone will

(02:46):
be walking away with an amazing adventure there, you know,
g O Fish backing the biggest Saratoga. We've got the
PDFC Members champion team with FRM getting behind us. We've
got shimano an a Conda Mindel Beach. Like it's absolutely massive.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
And people like this is the thing people love their
fishing in the Northern Territory. But it's such a you know,
like it's such a great thing to be part of.
And then when you look at the fact that this is,
you know, a real family friendly event, em are any
idea what might be the youngest person taking part and
potentially the oldest or the most experienced.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Look, I can say, I think we've got maybe an
eighteen month old oh registered. Yeah, so that's kind of
a big, real team. So we'll see how they go.
As for the oldest, well, I don't know, the jury's out.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
Only as old as you feel, right.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
But you know, we've got people who've never fished in
an event before, and people you know and competitors and
everyone's just keen to get out and have a crack.
And you know it ties in nicely with million dollar fish.
The fish are in the system.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Yeah that's right. Hey with the eighteen month old, do
you reckon they could fish before they could walk or
around about the same time.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Look, with Jordie Smart as the father, I think anything
as possible.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Oh wonderful stuff. Now. I know you touched on one
hundred and fifty competitors. What is that a record for
you guys?

Speaker 2 (04:36):
No, so two years ago it was a bit over
two hundred. So for this year we really wanted to
focus on, you know, a little bit more manageable, a
little bit more personalized, really focus on the local side
of things. With the number of sponsors that have come

(04:56):
on board, everyone's local. It's really about supporting those in
the territory community as well well.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
And the Palmerston Game Fishing Club it is. It's such
a wonderful club. And I know you guys have got
well you've got a number of great events and a
lot of them coordinated by women.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
I know, a bit of a fun fact there, it's
not fact.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
I love it. Women can fish and do it bloody well,
and they can organize events and do it bloody well.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Yeah, absolutely. Well, you know Chris has been leading secret
women's business for I don't know donkeys' years. We've got
Peter and Rosa with the Junior Angler Education clinics, so
that's twenty something years. Baronat's with Beck and Lynn at
the Helm, and Leanne and myself with Carobrie Park Challenge.

(05:49):
So yeah, it's just amazing taking the lead.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Good on you girls now, I mean, how big are
we expecting some of these fish to be on the weekend?

Speaker 2 (06:02):
I reckon, I reckon There'll be some meties court for sure.
With the fishing open to overnight so competitors can choose
to fish overnight. Well, I reckon we'll get some big
fish court for sure.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Oh it's wonderful to speak to you this morning, Emma Harvey.
Love having a chat now. Whenever you guys have got

in from two o'clock tomorrow, lines In five point thirty
tomorrow night, and Linds Out one o'clock Sunday. So lot's
happening over this weekend for sure.
