Speaker 1 (00:00):
We got a message a little bit earlier this morning
that was quite concerning to both Crystal and I from
one of our regular geests, the beautiful Sue Sierra. Now
I believe that Sue was sort of accosted this morning
as she was on her way to work. Sue, were
you there?

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Yeah, I'm here, Katie.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Sue Shira. When I saw your message this morning saying
that you'd been confronted outside of work, I felt very concerned.
What happened?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Oh well, Katie, I was coming along Mitchell Street and
turning into Nuttle Lane and I saw five young Indigenous
people come out of the shop on the corner there.
Then they ran across the road, so I had to
stop and they were still in the middle of the road.
So I beat my horn and the next minute they're

(00:51):
banging on my car. So I got out and said,
you know, what's your problem? And then they called me
lots of names and ran off, And then I proceeded
to go to work and turned left into Shadforth when
they were there, and then I passed and got out
of the car and they were hanging around the car
and you know, what's a problem. And then one said

(01:11):
throw the rock at her. So they threw a rock
at me and got me in the top of my thigh,
which is a bit sore still, and then they threw
oh stuff I think they'd stolen from the shop. So
so yeah, I've met the police here. I must say,
you know, young Joshua Turner is absolutely wonderful. I did

(01:32):
the victim statement and there's another female one out out
there waiting. Because it's in a personal place, I didn't
want to hurt. I didn't want to frighten the young police.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
And you know, I've seen those legs, so they're pretty good.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
I reckon, thanks Katie. But yeah, but yeah, it's just
you know, I didn't think i'd ever feel a bit frightened.
But yeah, I'm I was, actually, you know, to be honest,
I and my girl said to me, Mum, you know
you're not ten football and bulletproof and some of them
have weapons, and I believe they've caught them, which is

(02:09):
absolutely wonderful good.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
I'm glad to hear that. Yeah, so are you okay?
I feel really I feel like I feel really upset
that that happened to you.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
I'm upset that I you know, they said, what do
you want to happen. I said, I'd like the little
sue my language, a little shit that proved the objects
at me and got me. I'd like an apology. But
I you know, I do I feel I do feel
rather rattled. I don't feel safe anymore. It maybe lost
a little bit of confidence that I don't think I'll

(02:43):
ever stop. I guess. Unfortunately it's happening more and more.
But yeah, but I just soon.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
Yeah, how long have you lived in the Northern Territory?

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Fifty four years?

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Fifty four years? Is this the first time that you
felt you're a bit scared to live in your hometown?

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yep, the very first time that this is that this
has happened to me, Yeah, the very first time. But
you know, as a policeman said, you know, so you
probably shouldn't get out of your car because they carry
weapons now, And I said, were okay, But you know,
I just sometime I just I guess I can't believe

(03:25):
that they would, you know. So the rock, I'm just
lucky the rock didn't hit me in the head.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Was it a big Was it a big rock?

Speaker 2 (03:32):
So it's a pretty it's a it's a good sized
mark and bruise and a bit saw walking. But you know,
the was was the smallest one on the youngest one,
and there the friends saying, smasher you, you know you
lovely mother, you know what, smash her and throw the

(03:53):
rock and do this and that, and I guess I
just felt umbradge and I thought, well, how dare you
do that to me? But come well, yeah, I said,
I'll think twice. I'll just stay in my car, winder
window down and pray them all with pepper spray.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
Well, I bet you, I bet you will be getting
yourself a canister of pepper spray. But Sue, how dare
you know young people, however old they are, treat you
in such a way. And I know that you are
as young at hard as they come, and you're unstoppable,
there is no doubt about that. But you know, for

(04:30):
a group of young people to do that to you
makes me really bloody angry.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Thanks Katie. I was angry now probably more upset.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
And you know, and Sue again, you and I have
spoken at different times about other seniors around the Northern
Territory feeling unsafe. We've spoken about the situation, you know,
last year in Alice Springs where you had seen your
territorians feeling unsafe. It's no one should feel that way.

(05:03):
I just think as a woman, you already feel quite vulnerable,
and so then when you've got a group of people,
you know, yelling that kind of thing out, I just
it's it beggars belief.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Oh there's no respect, obviously, Katie, no respect even with
my white hair or gray hair, there's no there's no
there's no respect whatsoever. I'd like to know where their
parents are. They should have been in school, obviously they weren't.
So that's that's another issue altogether, I guess. But there's
no respect, like smash it, smash them person, you know.

(05:40):
So yeah, it is it's just beggars belief. I guess.
Unfortunately I'm not the only one, and I unfortunately I
won't be the last one, which is the biggest issue.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
I think, Hey, that's exactly right. So I, like I
said earlier, I'm so sorry to hear that that has
happened to you this morning. And as as soon as
Krista and I saw that email from you, we both
immediately were like, oh, my goodness, is Sue okay? It
was our first instinct, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
A little bit sore and sorry for myself, but you know,
you can't keep a good woman down.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
You can't most a tough woman like you, that's for sure,
Sue Shira. Well, so lots of love to you from us.
I wish I could give you a hug.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
I you know, we.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
Yeah, we always appreciate all the time that you give
to us. You're a good person, you're a good Territorian
and it's you know, this kind of thing. It shouldn't
be happening to anyone, but it just makes me really
cross that you've had to deal with this today.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Yeah, thanks, Katie. I appreciate your support and crystal support
at the moment. I might even cry at the moment,
so I to go a woman, but yeah, I.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Know, will Yeah, I feel a bit emotional thinking about you, Sue.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
So I'll let you go.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
We'll keep those reputations as being tough ladies.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Hi.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Good on your sir, Thank

Speaker 2 (07:02):
You, thank you, thank you you too.
