Speaker 1 (00:00):
And it is really the best time of the year.
The dry seasons kicked in. There is so much happening
and it really doesn't get bigger than the Darwin Festival.
And we know that the full program has been unveiled
for one of the biggest events of the dry season.
So six hundred and eighty performances have been planned for
the Darwin Festival across the eighteen days in August. And

(00:23):
I'm very pleased to say that Artistic Director Kate Fell
joins me in the studio this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Good morning to you came in here.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
It's lovely to have you in the studio. I'll tell
you what this looks. I mean that every time the
program comes out, it's exciting for everybody to see. But
I love going through the pages.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
I know I love it too.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
It takes you know, we put so much effort into
that program guide and last week it I turned up
in the office and oh, it's just such a good
feeling to see it all.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
It truly is, and it's it's so exciting when you
look at all the different shows that are on the agenda.
But there is truly something for everybody, isn't there.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Yeah, totally, So you know if you want just like
super fun you know, fun night out, I mean the
party at the Spiegel Tent or you know some there's
some great comedy this year on the Impact Sunset Stage,
Tom Gleason and Edmunds like Tommy Little like some really
great ones.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
D loves their comedy.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
And then that Venue two. All the comedians love coming
up here. You know, they have a great time. So
that just yeh, fun night out.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
You know.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
We've got a lot of family friendly shows, both kind
of free things in Festival Park, but some beautiful shows
at the Entertainment Center, circus and theater and dance for
the littler ones and kind of then.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Everything in between.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
It truly is and that's what I think I love
about the Darwin Festival as well as it's like a
smallest board of talent. There's something for everybody, and there's
all different kinds of performances as well.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yes what would you are?

Speaker 1 (01:51):
There ones that you look at and you go, oh
you got to get along to that?

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Oh my goodness, so many that's so hard. Look.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
A really big special one this year is big Name
no blankets. Yeah, there were rumpy bands, story and songs.
It's our opening at the Darwin Ampi Theater. I saw
it in Sydney, so all the festivals in Australia are
doing this show and it's an empty story and so
we're so thrilled to have it outdoors at the Anti Theater.
The music is so amazing and yeah, that's one I

(02:19):
would definitely not miss.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Gosh what else?

Speaker 3 (02:22):
And the other one I would probably because just because
it's really for everyone is cirk Bon Bond Yep, really
fantastic circus dance. It's a super funny MC so it's
kind of like this bigal tent show but no naughty bits.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
I guess kids.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yeah yeah you can take you you know, your mom
like whatever. So everyone will love that one.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
How cool? And then like I know there's a few
World prebieres.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Happening too, isn't there.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
Yeah, you know, it's what we try and really get
the balance of is inviting some amazing artists that you
know don't get to come to dar one all the time,
but also it's about investing and supporting Northern Territory artists.
We've got artists from here of but also Papanya and
Manon Greeter and Nallas Springs and all across the territory.
Beautiful new works like Song Spirals Rosalie Pearson, She's.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Made this work.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
It's based on her mother's book Song Spirals Northeast Arnham Lands.
That really invites you into that culture through music, dance
and projections. So that's just one of like really beautiful
anti works and i'd really encourage people see something that different.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
You know, how afflicted the program.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Guide and there's some of those new works that are
really special well.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Cool, I mean how important is that as well that
have showcasing some of that new work because we know
that there's some massive names and there's some huge artists
that are going to be here, but really showcasing some
of that new work, particularly Northern Territory talent, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
It is so important.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
So say when we do Missy Higgins on the Amphitheater,
we've also got the amazing Prayer Corby and Leah Flanagan
as the support acts. So you know, we always match
up anti musicians with our visiting musicians. Really important. Amy Heatherington,
who's such a local legend. She's got a new show
called Territory Proud, so you'll have to check that out. Yeah,

(04:07):
but yeah, it's you know we've got artists every night
on the festival park on the Downput bandstand, you know,
so all that great free music and this year we've really.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Made you know, that focus on them.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
There's so many cultures that make up this place and
so you'll really see you know, African choirs and Latin
dance grooves and Indian fusion bands, like all of the
different great groups that are here.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
And I'll be you touched on on the fact that
we've got so much history in the Northern Territory as well.
But I understand that there's going to be a tribute
to the fiftieth anniversary of Cyclone Tracy, which is something
that's so important.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
That's going to be so special. It's a Darlin Symphony
orchestra show and so talk to Arnie Billawara Lee. It's
her sort of stories and reflections and Nola Missouri is
the composer. So it's called Vital Forces, and so yeah,
a really special orchestra work that we've got to see
and be very very special.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
I'm very movie giving me goosebumps just thinking about it,
So I can't like, I think that'll be amazing. Absolutely,
Now tell me, there is always a lot to look
forward to at Festival Park, isn't there What can we
expect this year? The new big exciting thing is this
installation called Lost Dogs Disco. So it's this pack of
inflatable dogs, gorgeous one.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Six meters high, like they were so pretty.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
They've got these beautiful little blinking lights and they make
this kind of doggy noises, so they're right for kids
to run around, but also just as adults. Like they're
really beautiful, so visually it's going to look really stunning,
but also something great for when you're having a nice
time in the park, the kids can be running around
doing something wonderful.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
So that's something that people will just be able to
go to its enjoy.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Yeah, that's right.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
I really like that as well, because I know that
sometimes you know, for some families, if they are if
they are finding it a bit tough financially, that there
is still something for everybody to sort of be able
to go and enjoy as well.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
Definitely, I mean, and also what's great about Darwin Festival
is there's so many exhibitions that form.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Part of the program. They're all obviously free.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
You know, there's things like the Tiwee Island Art opening.
That's you know, some great performances it's on in that
first week, so do look through the program.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
There's plenty of free things, but we.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
Also try and keep tickets really reasonable as much as
we can, and we've got some good programs this year
as well. So if you know, if financial barriers are there,
just give us a call. And there are you know,
some community tics that we can help too.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
Oh that's really good.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
That's good to hear. Now tell me the dow and
Ski Club it's also set to host the closing weekend.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Is that right.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Yeah, we did it last year and it was fantastic
with two shows. This year we're doing three shows and
we've got Marlon Williams on the Friday night, Kate Miller
hide Key on the Sunday night, and then the Sunday
night is the cat Empire for our kind of closing fun.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Yeah, dance party. So that should be really fun.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Oh, that'll be so good. Look, I love the Doll Festival.
There's so many wonderful things to see and do. It's
such a vibrant time I think for the whole of
the Northern Territory, like it truly showcases us at our best.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
Rife.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
It does. And you know, I say to everyone, bring
up your friends and family. So many people do. Everyone
always says their houses a fall in August.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
But it really is such a great time to show
off this beautiful place and everyone is is just so happy.
I saw that last year. There's just the look in
everyone's eye having a great time.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
Yeah, it's a wonderful time.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
It is a wonderful time to be in Darwin. Now,
case tell us where can people go if they want
to check out the full program or if they want
to really have a good look through tra all through
that program.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Really like hopefully you should be seeing program guides in
cafes and everything, but also online Darwinfestival dot org dot
au so tickets runs out the moment for friends of
the Festival, and we encourage you to sign up as
a friend and but then everything's on sale at nine
am on Friday for everyone.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Wonderful stuff. Well, Darwin Festival Artistic Director Kate Fell, it
is lovely to have you in the studio. Thanks so
much for your time. Thank you
