Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now no doubt, there is no better time to be
in Darwin than during the Darwin Festival. It's running inutil
August twenty four and there really is something for everyone. Comedy, cabaret,
live music, dance, circus, opera, art, theater and spectacular food
and drink. The Darwin Festival has really got it all.

(00:20):
And joining us in the studio to talk more about
what we can expect. It's Darwin Festival's Artistic Director Kate Fell.
Good morning, case. Oh there is really something for everybody,
isn't there.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Oh, there really is, And I always just say come
start at Festival Park because that is where you will
find anything. We've got this awesome new installation there this
year called Trumpet Flowers. You basically, you know, couldn't sort
of bang these things and this awesome music, so you're
running around dancing. We had, you know, there was a
bunch of adults there the other night and they were
acting like big kids.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
So that's one to interact with.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
And then all just the shows that you can see
Reyes Nicholson tonight, Hey DJ, this awesome hip hop dance
show tomorrow night and Ronda's after party that's going to bat.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
I met Ronda this week.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
She is gorgeous and just such an incredible talent.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
R Birch more like, she's got legs for day. So
I'm so jealous of that woman.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
I mean, she's she stood next to me, she went,
oh good, another tall one. I'm like, yeah, but I'm
not as tall as you. I didn't have but the
heels on I must have been.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
But she's incredible. Oh yeah, So she's got this show.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
It's called Ronda's After Party, So if you're invited to
her house.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Is the kind of the progress of it.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
And then these great cast of sort of circus acts. Definitely,
this is an adult only one. We have lots on
for kids and families, but that is not one. So yeah,
bring bring the kids to Teddy Best Picnic and then
the night before go to Ronda.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
Yeah, good idea, I don't mix them up. No, yeah, yeah,
you know what.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Oh well, you're going to do a lot of explaining
to you children afterwards. Now, Okate, how many shows are
being presented this year at the festival.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yes, so there's ninety different events. Wow, I think it's
like four hundred plus performances and fifty venues. So that's
the whole kind of thing of this year's festival. It's
about an adventure. You explore your city or your friends
and family, and all the tourists that are here, they
get to see Darwin at its best, or the incredible
sunsets and the harbors and the parks and all their

(02:25):
really unique venues. But also for locals, like we often
get a little bit stuck. We go to our particular
bar or particular thing, you know, go to the rails
on Friday night, go to the ski club to see
some incredible music. We've got the Darwin Waterfront and Fort
Hill Parklands. This weekend with you is Sebastian and lab
so you.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Know, just just exple That's what I really encourage you too.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
It's only eighteen days and then there's a long build
up and there's a long wet.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
This is the dry. This is the time for fun.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Exactly, and I love that, like you seem to be
using a few different sort of venues and different locations
this year as well to really showcase areas of Darwin
that people might not regularly go to.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Absolutely, I mean even things like we're doing this Sunday.
It is sold out by the Darwin Harbor Cruz but
with a festival twist. So we've got Merrick Watts, We've
got Amy Heatherington, and then we've got it's all about,
you know, showing off Darwin's awesome hospitality scene.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
So it's things like that.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
We've got next week a kind of tour through some
of the waterfront bars. All those things are about going, yeah,
using those venues, but using them in a bit of
a different way.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Yeah, I like that.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Now, tell me what are some of the standout shows
do you think for this year? And I know you
love everything. You're the artistic director, so you absolutely love
all the shows that are programmed. But are there any
particular standouts that we should keep an eye up? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Look, I think it's always about seeing something unique. So
my kind of real unique tip for you is Sahani
Shah who's on next week. Yeah, she's a mentalist from India.
She's the world's most subscribed mentalist. She has unbelievable amounts.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
Of I don't even know what a mentalist is.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Read the minds, read your mind.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Honestly, she is so cool and gorgeous and charming.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
It's very funny.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
I guess you know it's you'll absolutely love it.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
So she's my pick for next week.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
I think for the closing week there are four different
Ski Club concerts.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
The one I'm super excited about is Sarah Blasco.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
And this an amazing lineup of female artists that is
going to be really, really great.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
But it'll be stay on for the rest of your
program talk about all my show, but I promise I won't.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
We've literally been living this as well, like not only
for sort of the year leading into the festival kicking off,
but you start programming from sort of a couple of
years ago, so it must be really beautiful for you
when everything comes to fruition and then you get to
go and see people's enjoyment on their faces as they
see the shows.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Absolutely, I mean that's I mean, everyone says, what are
you most excited about? I honestly my answer is seeing
people's reactions. That's you know, the festival is not a
festival without the people. And the audience is in done
and out for.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
A good time.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
They're out for to, you know, take in something new,
you know. So the artists are having a great time
being here as well. Everyone that we pick up from
the airport they're like, I can't believe this is so exciting.
I've escaped the winter or whatever, so you know they're
up to have a great show.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
So yeah that I love that look on people's faces
that moment.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
I love seeing two strangers kind of chatting to each
other after a show.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
You know, that's what the festival does as well.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
It kind of reminds us of that joy of coming together, connecting,
get out of your home.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
We all love our.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Homes, we love watching things on TV, but this is
the chance to have that live experience and there's nothing
quite like that.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
Yeah, spot on.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Now in terms of some of the events that are
lined up for families, tell me what families can expect.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Oh, there's so much.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
So, as I said, Teddy Bear's Picnic, which is an
institution that's this Sunday on the Esplanade. Next week, there's
a gorgeous show called How the Birds Got Their Colors
at Magnet at the gallery outside there, and that's telling
a dream time story Luther Korra and arc Circus. It's
kind of told through storytelling and circus. It's really really stunning.

(06:08):
So that is one I'm really looking forward to seeing that. Yeah,
really gorgeous. Yeah, Yeah, And so many others. We have
Palmerston as well. On next Friday night we have the
Family for Yesta, so that's a big free event out
at Palmerston and Glida Square.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
The markets are on, we've.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
Got music, we've got circus, we've got dance, lots of
come and try things, lots of roving things.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
So that's a super fun night.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
And Kate, I know that another thing that you've certainly done,
and that the Darwin Festival tries to do as well,
is make things affordable or make things accessible for everybody.
So you've got a few events that people can head
along to that are free as well, don't you.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Absolutely. I mean the certainly for free.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
There's also community tickets as well, so you know, if
that is a barrier, go online. A lot of our
shows have community tics, which are you know, more than
half priced.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
Tickets as well.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
But yeah, in the park, you know as well, that's
just such a place you can go. You can take
in the free music, the installation, the trumpet flowers, you
can interact with. There'll be roving things as well. So
that's that's kind of my tip for you.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
If money's a.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Little bit tighter this year, just head to the Park,
have a great night there.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
Let the kids run around, meet your friends.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
Exactly, let them have a good time. Hey. In terms
of the food and drinks on offer, I know there's
always some beautiful local food vendors there as well, isn't
there there is?

Speaker 2 (07:28):
So this year the two or new or returning Hunemann
is back, which is wonderful, and Flora's Temper Mexican as well. Yeah,
and then lots of our returning favorites. So three mums,
it's being Christine's exotic eads. Like I mean, basically, it's
just capturing Darwin on a plate. You know, you get
to eat your way around the world, but you don't

(07:48):
have to leave Darwin.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
I'm hungry just thinking about it.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
That's where I'll be every day.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Oh, it's going to be fantastic, it always is. And
we're going to catch up with you each Thursday to
find out what's on. So it is wonderful to talk
to you this morning.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Good luck, thank you, thank you, and see you very soon.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
Thank you, thanks so much.
