Speaker 1 (00:00):
I absolutely love seeing young people do great things in
the community, and we know that school's heading back tomorrow
as well. There is a lot going on around the place,
but it is that time of year. I suppose for
some parents maybe feeling some mixed emotions as some of
the little lees go back to school for the first time.
Probably quite a bit of excitement from some of our
students that are going into the older grades, particularly if

(00:24):
you're going into year twelve and joining me in the
studio right now. I've got three students that are actually
heading into year twelve at dah And High School this year.
But they're going to have a bit of a juggle
because not only are they heading into year twelve, they
have been recognized nationally after competing at the International Science
Fair in Brisbane and they're heading over to Los Angeles

(00:47):
this year to take part in a huge event. Now
they join me right now in the studio, I want
to make sure I get the pronunciations of their names correct. Now. Firstly,
I have got monishi Ah Trapurah, Good morning to you.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Good morning as well.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Wonderful to have you in the studio, Thank you so
much for your time. We've got Vincent Mondol. Good morning
to you, Vincent, good morning. Lovely to have you in
the studio this morning.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Thank you for having us.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
Wonderful and we've also got Naias Hassan, good morning to you.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Good morning.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
It's great to have you all in here. And firstly,
are you pumped about year twelve starting tomorrow?

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Excited?

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Excited?

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Nervous, very nervous obviously, but obviously this is a there's
a big pump in the air, and I think as
much as we are nervous, it's a very exciting time
as well.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
It's such a huge time of your life, you know,
when you go into year twelve, because you've done so
much hard work for several years and now it's sort
of a culmination of all that hard work. And you
guys are not only doing all that incredibly difficult work
and going into year twelve, but you're also absolutely achieving
in the area of science, aren't you.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Do you call it that.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Bit monest? I think you're all being a little bit modest.
Now tell me, because you did compete recently in the
International Science Fair in Brisbee. It was the end of
last year. Can you explain exactly what you did at
that science fair?

Speaker 4 (02:18):
So what we did for the Science Fair is we
thought up of a way to improve the sustainability at
Darwin High School. And the way that we did that
was we are tested whether using fans alongside air conditioning
would lead to better cooling outcomes using less electricity. And
what we found was that when you have fans on,
you can put the temperature your air conditioning to a

(02:40):
higher temperature, saving you money because your air conditioning is
running at a more efficient rate and the fan that
you use is using less energy than you would only
using the air conditioning.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
And Darlin's an interesting place to do that experiment because
as we all know, we certainly experienced some pretty warm temperatures,
don't we. Now how did the school sort of like,
how did I embrace the project?

Speaker 4 (03:05):
The school really helped us in that aspect that there
was a lot of support from the teachers and it
was one of those projects that it took a bit
of time, but we got there in the end, and
it just alongside all the exams we had at the
end of the year. It was a very rushed period,
but we got through it with the help of our
teachers and all the stuff at our school.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
How much time did it take.

Speaker 5 (03:28):
It took around three months, I would say, But like
before our project actually got selected, there was a preliminary
stage where the school was trying to gather a team
of three to actually go to the Science Fair, and
in order to select those three individuals, we were all
asked to submit a experiment deconstruct and from those deconstructs,

(03:51):
the top three would be selected and so luckily ours
got selected and then from there we became one group
and then worked on this one experiments. So in total,
I would say for this whole Science Fair we spent
around five months because of the preliminary status, but for
this experiment itself it would take around three months.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
And then what was it like heading to Brisbane and
sort of going up against other projects for us?

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Honestly it was new territory back in the day.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
We competed at the Australian Science Fair, which was held
at John Muntish Science School in Melbourne, yep. And this
was our first time a time being invited to the
International Student Science Fair which is held all over the world.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
This was the first time for Darwin High, first time
we had ever gone.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Oh that's incredible, and I think it was the third
time it was ever held in Australia, and so obviously
with New Territory, it was all new to us and
we went out there, we gave it our best shot and.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
First year we won our first award.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
We won the Real World Applicability Award at the award ceremony,
which for us was a very big accomplishment. And then
exactly one week later we got to call up to
represent Australia at the International Science and Engineering which is
Howard Ends states, you are a.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Group of trial blazers, the first from the Northern Territory.
I think this is incredible. It's such a wonderful story.
And then the fact that you're now heading across to
the United States. Excited, nervous, how you feelings.

Speaker 5 (05:17):
And especially the ants, so amazing opportunity.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
Yeah, and like you said, you're representing like you're representing
the whole country, You're representing the Northern Territory and your
school like it's a massive, massive thing.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Honestly.

Speaker 4 (05:31):
Yeah, we're very proud to be Northern Territorians and having
this opportunity to represent the land territory. And I would
just I would just like to think that we have
all come a long way from when we came when we.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
First came to Darwin, Australia.

Speaker 4 (05:45):
Yeah, it was a big adjustment, I would think, But honestly,
we have grown and we have achieved, and we have
and we have more to achieve, and we want to
make Northern Territory and Darwin proud.

Speaker 5 (05:55):
And honestly, I think this is a great opportunity, and
not just a great opportunity, but also we aim to
inspire on the like the next generations of students to
actually be able to achieve such like high achievements with
the internationally.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
On you, good on you guys. I just think this
is incredible. Like I said, I love seeing young people
do great stuff. But then learning that you know that
this is the first time for Darwin High and for
the Northern Territory, I think is amazing. And I'm sure
that there is so many people listening this morning who
will feel so incredibly proud that the territories like that
the territory has been able to achieve this. Now it's

(06:35):
gonna be a tough juggle for the three of you though,
as well, heading to the US this year, raising money
to be able to go and completing your year twelve
studies now, have you got a bit of fundraising happening?
What are you doing to try and get across there?

Speaker 4 (06:51):
So we do have a go fund me going along
and we'd appreciate any donations, and we also expect accepting
any corporate donations. So if you're a big brund out
there and you want your logo to be on a
project on Approjeate in Los Angeles in May, so hit
us up.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Yeah, well tell do you tell you know what? I'm
more than happy to read out you go fund me page.
Have you got it there in front of you? Because
I think I do think it's really important that we
support young people in the territory who are doing great stuff.
So let me see what do we need to search up?
Fund International Science and Engineering Fair. So if you jump
on go fund me and do a bit of a

(07:32):
search for that, and I really hope that there are
some businesses out there that are prepared to support you three,
because I reckon it's wonderful what you're doing. Now, before
I let the three of you go, how much are
you expecting at all to cost? Have you got any idea?

Speaker 3 (07:45):
So in total we're hoping to ways ofughly thirty thousand dollars.
It takes about ten thousand dollars to send one student
from Australia and obviously working at three, it's a thirty
thousand total. We might a little extra for some extra
flights from Darwin to Sydney and stuff.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
Like that before we go.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yep. So and totally we were looking at our thirty
five thousand dollars in one month. Yea, we have thirty
five thousand dollars thirty days.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
So we need some support. People get out there and
jump online, jump on the go fund me page and
help these awesome young men to head across to America
for this competition. I think it's fantastic. Now tell me
so is it the same project that you'll then be
presenting in the US.

Speaker 4 (08:31):
So what we're doing is we're improving the project. Ye
So we have run more experiments. So Saturday all day
we were at We're a good shepherd all day running
more experiments. And we are still in the process of
processing the data and writing up improvements for the project
and hopefully from there it will be picked up and

(08:55):
we can improve on it more.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
How wonderful. So in your school holiday, as you three
is still resour you're still working hard and you're still
working on your project that is commendable. How are you
feeling about going into going back to school tomorrow after
still doing all that work over the holidays?

Speaker 5 (09:11):
A better exhausting, But I think we're all pumped up.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
I think we're all excited. Honestly, it's been for us.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
It's been lovely eight weeks since our final exams because
we ended it earlier than the rest of the tawer Chi,
so eight weeks we can finally get back with everyone,
our teachers, and I think it's a really exciting time.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Well, it's been so wonderful to have the three of
you in the studio this morning. I really appreciate your time.
But if possible, I'd love to catch up with you
before you head across to the US as well and
find out how things are going, and just remind of
the Northern Territory that we've got you three great young
fellas that are doing wonderful things. So I think it's
it is really great to see. So thank you all
so much for coming in and we'll catch up with

(09:52):
you before you go away.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Thank you very much, thanks for having us.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
Thank you
