on their latest production of The Wedding Singer. Now the
Community Theater Group is putting on three shows starting this
Friday at the Darwin Entertainment Center, showcasing local talent and
joining me in the studio This morning is Darwin Musical

(00:21):
Theater's director Charmain Gibbs. Good morning firstly to you, Charmain.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Good morning Katie, thanks for having us.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Lovely to have you in the studio. And I've also
got choreographer Hannah Clark. Good morning, Hannah, get a Katy.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
How are you so good?

Speaker 1 (00:35):
It's wonderful to have you both in the studio. And
how exciting the Wedding Singer.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
It's not happening.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Get your eighties things out.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Now, it is.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
It's an absolute favorite when it comes to watching The
Wedding Singer on film. So what is the show going
to be like?

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Well, it's think of the movie, but it just being
tenfold coming right at You have lots of eighties fashion,
lots of eighties hair, Some of the songs from the
movie are in the musical are and then there's a
whole new lot of eighties synthesized vibe as well. So
it's a lot of fun.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
It sounds like it's going to be Hannah. What's it like,
you know, putting something like this together.

Speaker 4 (01:24):
Oh, you know what, with the Darwin community, it's beautiful.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
We've had the best time. It's fun, it's camp.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
Everybody gets to be themselves and you know, everybody's so
kind here, so we all just work together and we
just want the best for each other.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
And the cast too.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
How many people are involved, not only cast wise, but
also behind the scenes and in terms of you know,
putting this production together.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
So there's about twenty cast and then there's three of
us on the production team, and then you've got the
committee who run Darwin Musical Theater and in that committee
are cow the two people who are just running the show,
Holly O'Donnell and Eleanor Blackfed, who we would be lost without.

(02:08):
So and then there's just lots of other people who
then are coming in Lily Daniel, our stage manager, and
tjur Asm as well. So there's just so many people
who are just part of this volunteers.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
Yeah, absolutely, how wonderful.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
That's it's so nice to see the way that the
community comes together for something like this. Now, I'm not
sure if I've ever been to a Darwin Musical Theater production.
I'm embarrassed to say.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
We got a production.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
For our listeners.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
I love it, Like, tell me a little bit more.
I mean, you've said that it is going to be
as if the wedding singer really comes to life. Tell
us a little bit more, you know about just about
it and about what people can expect with the show.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
Well, upon arrival there will be cheeky surprises, decorations. You're
walking into a wedding expect tissues, laughs. You know, it's
mainly going to be a night out for anyone who
wants to have fun. You're going to get big eighties
dance moves, You're going to get discooples, You're going to
get flooring. You're going to get love above all else,
love and joy.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
How cool? Now? In terms of the cast, all local performers,
aren't They.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
All local performers and such an eclectic mix of people.
Our leads, you know, some of them have got PhDs.
One of them is the senior registrar in pediatrics at
Royal Darwin Hospital. They are just so amazing, with so
many feathers to their cap I was messaging them last

(03:43):
night and I said, oh, guys, I know a little
bit about you, but can you tell me more, because
as a director you don't get too much time to
chat with them. And they started telling me all these things,
and I was like, guys, I was just looking for
you know, I want world peace and I love dolphins.
I didn't need all this. So they're a whole bunch
of just wonderful, wonderful nerdy. I love that.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
It must be difficult getting everybody together for all, you know,
for all your preparation and for all your rehearsals, when
you've got people from such a vast walk of life
coming together to perform.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
And competing with the dry season, Yeah, it's hard to
so you know everyone's going to make the most of
their dry season, but yeah, everyone has had has been
challenging at times with rehearsals and working around everyone. But
you know, when everyone does come together, everyone's just so
focused on making it great for one another. So it's

(04:37):
it's really great. It's a lovely vibe.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
And how important is it as well, though, to put
on performances like this in terms of showcasing that local
talent and giving people an outlet to be able to perform.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
It is so important because like, theater means a lot
of things to different people, and it's a place where
you can come and escape. You get to nurture another
side of yourself, and you get to find like minded
people in Darwin, which is a really special thing because
it's niche.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yeah, but it's important. We need to keep the art
team thriving and you can do that by booking your
tickets to the website.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
How like, how good are the ticket sales looking at
the moment, They're going.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Really well, Like like we were saying off earlier, you know,
it's that thing of everyone now going oh that's right,
that's on this weekend. Yes, and it has been interesting
too because it's obviously the long weekend, so competing with
the Darwin Show, not that they're much competition.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
You've got a Darwin show.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yeah, you know, the tickets are going really well, so
there are a few left, so yeah, grab them. And
there's a couple of spots on Sunday's Mattnee We've got
some vip down on the stage on the actions.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
So some people might be too frightened to be up
there thinking that.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
They themselves getting married too.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Yeah, and you'll be you get champagne arrival.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
It's actually luck really funny.

Speaker 4 (06:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
Good, that sounds like it's going to be so cool. Now,
tell me in terms of how long it's taken to
actually put together the show, how long has it been
in the making.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
So we started rehearsing in April. Wow, and yeah, and
it's been pretty much two rehearsals a week since then,
and sometimes three rehearsals a week. Probably for half of
the rehearsal run, it's been about three rehearsals a week.
And yeah, so we're now we're finally here. So we
all gave each other a big cuddle and we got
to the theater today and just way, yes, it's a

(06:33):
pompin day. So it's really exciting.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
I love the excitement. I can see that you two
love what you do as well, and I really like
that when I interview people, when you can see the
passion and you see how excited you are about the shows,
that's wonderful. And you know, I'm sure that those listening
this morning as well will be feeling that excitement and
thinking we want to get along, so how can they
purchase tickets.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
So if they go to the Dumwant Entertainment Center website
and the link is really easy from there. It's got
there the banner of what's on and it will have
all the links to the phone numbers to the online
booking system. Very easy.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Well, Hannah and Charmaine, it is lovely to meet you both.
Thank you so very much for joining us in the
studio this morning, and I hope that it is absolutely
fantastic on the weekends.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Thank you
