Speaker 1 (00:00):
A big weekend of running this weekend with the Darwen
Runners and Walkers Half Marathon taking place. It is a
fantastic event which happens every year at East Point. And
joining me on the show is Ian Fullerton from the
Darwen Runners and Walkers Morning.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Ian, Okay, here are you? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Really good, Good to have you on the show. How
I'm assuming is a very organized for the weekend. How
the numbers looking.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
We're probably going to hit the two fifty come Sunday
now the Darwin Night syndrome where the last thirty seconds
they all.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Register myself included.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
It's been Yes, I did see a name on the
on the teams list last night which is related.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Yeah, well well, well well we've registered Bronte. But I
was thinking, oh, hang on, how far am I going
to run after? So I'll bite the bullet, I reckon,
I'll go the proper half marathon in so I'd make
sure I register myself this Savo. But two hundred and fifty,
how does that compare two other years?
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Well, that's what we had last year as well, and
probably this time last year it was one hundred lesson.
They just smashed us in the last couple of days
but it is what it is. I mean, I've been
doing it that long now that there's the expectations. I've
done all the bibs up ready, so we'll see how
(01:33):
it panned out for me exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
No matter what, you're always ready for it. I how
many years has the half marathon been taking place?
Speaker 2 (01:41):
I was just thinking that before because I don't have
the data in front of me. But it's been going
probably thirty or more years. Wow, I've been involved in
it for god, I'll hang on. I've been here twenty
seven years, so much longer than that. Yeah, I've been
involved for probably twenty six years. So yeah, it's one
(02:03):
of the iconic events from up here in Darwin. The
club goes back to sixty five, so probably in the
seventies they started.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
How awesome. I mean, it's wonderful to see people out
running and it is so wonderful to see the event
happen every year. For those who've never taken part, where
does it start and how does it all work?
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Okay, So what we've done is we've picked East Point,
so we start and finish at Lake Alexander at the
car park. There. We have an initial kilometer where we
go out and then we do four laps of East
Point itself, which is spot on five k's per lapse,
so works out just nicely for the twenty one k's.
(02:50):
It means that we can have a couple of water stops.
That means the runners get a drink station. Ear with
two and a half kves, we're not having to fight
traffic yep, and we can get people out there monitoring
the course and have eyes on them.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
And the other wonderful thing about it being the four
lapse is that then if you don't want to run
the full half marathon, you can actually do it as
part of a team.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Yes. Yeah, So what we do is we have the
realay teams change over near the start finish, so both
the teams are two and teams of four. We have
a change box that they do it from. And it
also means that some of the not quite fit people
at the sixteen k we can be looking at them
along with our Saint John's volunteers to make sure that
(03:39):
they're good to go for that last five case.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Keeps everybody really nice and safe. Ian How long have
people got until they can register? When does registration close off?
Speaker 2 (03:50):
It closes off? It says it currently closes off at
eight o'clock Friday night. I will correct that because in
the brief it actually says nine. I'll go in and
change that. It will be nine o'clock local time. It
will close off tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
Awesome, So they've got a bit of time to still
register nine o'clock tomorrow night. Now, in terms of people
that are registering, if they you know, if they've decided
that they've already you know that they're going to take
part and they've signed up, where do they collect their
bibs from their running numbers and that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Okay, the bib issue is between four and five Saturday
afternoon down at Lake Alexander. So you get to see
the area where you'll be setting up and running, and
I'll do a progressive sort of race races slash safety
brief as people come in. So you know, you get
(04:46):
fifty or so people, you give them the brief, you
get the next fifty boo, you give them the brief,
and then we go out and mark the course and
all the admin things that go behind something like this.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
Now, if you've got plenty of volunteers and everything, because
I know that there's plenty of avid runners that listen
to the show. If there's is there any any volunteer
jobs that you're still trying to film.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Having enough eyes out on the course is the crucial bit.
So we're down a few of the what we call
marshals who we put key points to say, they just
monitor the runners and if they see something wrong they
can talk to them, give us a ring and we
can get assistance out to them. So I've got a
(05:31):
few people out there, but it's never never enough.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Well, look, if anybody is keen to help out, they
can jump on to the Darwin Runners and Walkers Facebook
page and you'll be able to find you guys on
there and send a message in where's the best spot
for them to jump online to register?
Speaker 2 (05:52):
It's called the Timing Wizards. If you go to the
Facebook page, yep, I've just updated the post on it
so you'll see Darwin Runners and Walkers half Marathon and
on that advert is the.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
The links on there. Well, I I will, I'll get
online and register to this and I will see you
on the weekend.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
So you reckon the legs are good to go again.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
We'll see mate, We'll see I might be walking but
you know, I'll give it a red hot guy and
i'll see what happens. Thank you as always for your time,
See you on the weekend. All right, no, thank you,
