Speaker 1 (00:00):
Bit of a change of pace because the Darwin Triathlon
Club is hosting a com and try event this weekend.
It's the first in a series of three races with
various sprint distances. As I said, happening this weekend at
East Point. I've gotten myself caught up in triathlons on
the weekends at different times, unintentionally at east Point now
(00:22):
joining me in the studio to tell us a little
bit more about what is happening. And well somebody who
comes back to the Northern Territory to take part in
some of our events. The Darwin Triathlon Club race director
for this weekend, Neil Rustall, good morning to.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
You, Good morning, kat.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Lovely to have you on the show. And also well
a Nooser triathlete, Vicky Woodrow, Good morning to you, Vicky,
morning Katie. Lovely to have you both in the studio
now Neil, this weekend happening at east Point. I've accidentally
joined the triathlon a couple of times at East Point
when I've been out for a long run, and I'll
(00:58):
tell you what looks like a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
They're a great time. Everybody's really good and everyone's encouraging
and we do we wrap up runners as we go
past them, or they join in and just tag along.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
It's great, It is wonderful. Now, what can people expect
for this weekend's event?
Speaker 2 (01:13):
This weekend, we've got two different races, So we've got
the long course and we've got a short course. And
the long course is a seven hundred and fifty meter
swim in Lake alex so it's from starting at one end,
up to the other end and back. They're a twenty
six kilometer ride and a five kilometer run which will
probably wrap you up in again.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Might do. I'm actually going away this weekend to run
a half marathon, so I might be there this weekend.
What about the shorter one?
Speaker 2 (01:38):
The short course which is for the come and try people,
so the people that haven't done a triphon before or
they not ready to give any distance. It's a short course,
so it's a three hundred meter swim, a thirteen kilometer
bike right, only a two and a half kilometer run.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Awesome, Like, it's very attainable right for your first time,
particularly if you want to give it a go. I
think it's a wonderful event to.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Do, absolutely, and people don't want to do all three
we can get them in a team.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Yes, So this is what I did. A couple of
years ago. I did one of these triathlons and they
teamed me up with this young fellow his name escapes
me at the moment as my cyclist. He was an
absolute gun. I was like, this is a great team
to be. It's the kind of team you want to
you want to join. Now, Vicky, you've come up for
the event. Is it something that you do each year?
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Hi, Katie, Yes, I do come up as often as
I can. I find excuses to come up to Darwin
in the dry season and to race with any of
the races the Darwin Try Club has on. So I
was super excited to see that there will be three
races that I'll be able to experience when I'm up
here this time.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Oh how awesome. So so do you like how often
do you take part in triathlons?
Speaker 3 (02:48):
Imas season triathlete have been around the game for a while.
I compete back on the East Coast, but I do
love coming back to the Darwin tri Clup events. Obviously
the dry season the weather is perfect, but the comraderie
of the club and the welcoming of new people, along
with all of the old guard, just make it such
a vibrant club and I really really love coming up
(03:10):
to the club and racing with them when they both
races up here in the dry season.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
It is an awesome vibe. I reckon the Darwin Triathlon Club.
Everybody's very encouraging, you know, everybody, even if you like
even if you've never done one before, people are really
welcoming and want you to have a go right.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Absolutely, yep. And the largest cheesy often a person that
comes over the line last, because everybody knows how much
effort they're putting in just to get there and motivate
themselves to do it. So it's great. It's really good
to see.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Now tell me you two both seasoned triathletes, what's the like,
what kind of distances have you raced in before around
Australia or indeed overseas.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
I've nowhere gone the distances that Neil has. I stayed short,
and I maintain that's one of the reasons I'm still
doing the sport. Stays short, never done any longer iron Man,
but I prefer the short distance sprints and Olympics, which
is helpful for aging bodies as well.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
How good I reckon, it's fantastic and you know the
like the longer you can do it, the better.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Right, Absolutely, I believe it keeps me young.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Yeah, I love that. I think it's really wonderful. And Neil,
what about you? Have you done some of the you know,
the the iron Man distances?
Speaker 2 (04:24):
I have I ticked over my tenth Men.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Whereabouts?
Speaker 2 (04:29):
That was a port mcquarie's Iron menestrata.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Well, now, just for our listeners who don't know the
distance of an Ironman triathle on, how far are you going?
Speaker 2 (04:39):
So it's a three point eight kilometer swim, one hundred
and eighty kilometer bike ride, and then a full marathon.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
It's a good effort, mate, very good efforts.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Nots of walking involved in that.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
But of course this weekend if people do want to
take part, just remind us when and where it is happening.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
So Sunday morning, the race starts at seven am. We
ask for people to get down there at about six o'clock.
Take your bike there and if you want to learn
how to rack your bike and yeah, ask a few questions.
Six o'clock is perfect time to come and see me.
Entry closers online it's about lunchtime on Saturday noon, but
(05:20):
other than that, the race will start at seven am,
just as the sun's coming up. What's sun coming up?
Is here enjoying your swim? And that's it. We usually
finish around about eight thirty nine o'clock.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Wonderful And where can they go for a bit more info?
Should they try? And should they jump online here to
the socials and search do and triathlon club or is
there a website?
Speaker 2 (05:40):
There is a website, Yeah, you do and try club website.
Just google Darwen Trithlon Club and it'll be the only
one that comes up.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
And VICKI to anybody out there listening this morning that's
wondering whether they should give it a go, what would
you say to.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Them, Katie, Look, absolutely give it a try. It is
a come and try it to short distance certainly achievable,
but the energy and the comaraderie at the club will
then get you seeing doing more than the one. So
certainly encouraging anybody that's thinking about doing a swim bike
round or even one of those legs and getting the
club to help them out with the other leg or
(06:14):
two legs. Absolutely, it's a beautiful time of the year
to be doing it, come out and have a go.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Wonderful stuff. So good to have you both in the studio.
Thank you so much for joining us, Thanks for having me,
thank you, thank you.
